Matt Bradley update
Matt Bradley was allowed to travel home to Ottawa after leaving Saturday night's game in St. Louis with an apparent concussion. That's an encouraging sign for the Caps winger, who didn't look so good when he was helped off the ice at Scottrade Center following a seconds-too-late, head-high hit from Cam Janssen.
The Caps have not provided an official update on Bradley's status, but I'm hearing team officials are hopeful that he'll be ready to play when the season resumes March 3.
I was also told earlier today by a couple of sources that a disciplinary hearing hasn't gone down yet, and that the NHL might wait until after the Olympic break/prior to St. Louis' next game on March 2 (in Phoenix) before deciding whether to punish Janssen, who is a repeat offender.

Wait, WHETHER? You've gotta be kidding me! I say suspend him now and let him ruminate on the errors of his ways for the next two weeks.

COLIN CAMPBELL AND BETTMAN ARE FREAKIN' SISSIES! Just another example of the Anti-Capitals bias by the NHL and its brown shirts Milbury and Cherry.

You forgot to add that Matt Bradley will be suspended ten games for letting his head get in the way of poor little Cam Janssen's elbow.

NHL Stupidity. Make the decision. Announce it. Make it effective when play resumes.

I don't believe in the conspiracy theories that the entire NHL is biased against the Caps.
Fact is the hit on Bradley was dirty, but the hit was on Bradley. Bradley is not a high profile player. Outside of a few Caps fans the hit has been long forgotten and a non-issue. IF Janssen gets anything expect it to be minimal.

So is Sweden vs Germany up after this Shuster guy finishes choking away Team USA's chances at curling?
Posted by: tmac2yao | February 17, 2010 8:09 PM | Report abuse
The review should have occured as quickly as the one for Mike Green did. Anything else means that the NHL is not going to do anything and is hoping that the Olympic break helps this be forgotten. GM should be up in arms and on the phone every day.

Where in the world did the game go?? It was on msnbc, now it's not there anymore and the other channel has curling on? wtf? where is the hockey game???!!

@ FLDave
The NHL has been MUCH tougher on hits to the head! Janssen had better be held accountble like everyone else. He is a repeat offender 2! If there is little to no punishment, then every caps conspiracy nut has the right to run their mouth until the end of time!
Posted by: capscoach | February 17, 2010 8:15 PM | Report abuse
Honestly folks, this conspiracy theory stuff is actually the stupidest thing I have ever read in my entire life. Millbury clearly has an agenda against promoting the Caps, but it stops there. This has to do with a personal bias of his own, but to suggest the entire league is against the Caps is beyond foolish.
And yes, the hit by Janssen was bad. Very late, and Brads was injured which sucks. He will get 2-3 games though, and it won't be announced until after the Olympics. The league doesn't have to announce anything until the Blues' next game, and it is likely letting the Olympics take center stage right now, rather than announcing something that reflects negatively on the league in the middle of the tournament.
Once more, as a Caps fan, this conspiracy stuff is almost embarrassing. Please just leave it alone. Bash MM all you want, but leave it at that.

That Shuster guy was horrible. Just horrible.
He choked 3 times in less than 24 hours.
Wow, we missed the whole first period of the Sweden game... to watch curling.

Aldred, leave THIS alone. Who are you? The Campbell/ Bettman of this board? I'll bash who I want, how I want. Janssen is a punk. Millbury is a punk. Bettman, Campbell, and that jackass who called a slash on the broken stick (Matt Cooke?) suck. I agree, not a conspiracy, but NHL officiating is simply abominable.

Is it any surprise that Mike Emerick is calling the Canada games. How people can consider him the premier hockey announcer is beyond me, there are so many better IMO. I think he's just another tool in the Nothing But Crosby networks's plan to shove hockey down America's throat. BTW, Milbury is just the front man for this operation. Go Ovie and the other Caps in the tournament!
Posted by: pacapsfan | February 17, 2010 8:58 PM | Report abuse
While I know nothing of the CBA, I think it is dumb that there has to be an in person hearing with the NHL Office. It would seem that since the incident was televised and indisputable, the league should be able to simply inform the teams of the suspension. Then is there were an appeal, have a face-to-face. So, my question is why wait? The only reason to wait is if the NHL is closed for the break.

I was watching curling on CNBC and they picked up the Sweden game at the beginning of the 2nd period.
Did anybody see the 1st period on any channel?
I don't think they showed it.

Agree with you on getting Nicky getting signed up for a few more years.
For today's game, Nicky had some sweet passes and looked great.
Overall, the game was a defensive struggle.

I enjoyed the bickering between Jeremy Roenick and Milbury where Milbury tried to downplay Backstrom's skill and Roenick basically told him to can it.
Roenick came up a few pegs on my list and Milbury went down even further.
I'd tell you who's below Milbury on my list, but they're all politicians, and some people get incredibly upset if you even spell politics on this blog.
(Honestly, there's one poster, who almost never posts, except if someone mentions politics, like ten seconds later he attacks with a demand not to have the politics.)

tmac: My proposal since last summer is you sign Backstrom 11 years to match the remaining length on Ovechkin's deal. Value is $6.5M/yr for total contract of $71.5M. It makes so much sense that it's bound to happen.
Posted by: tominfl1 | February 17, 2010 10:06 PM | Report abuse
Not a great game by the Swedes IMO. It's got to be tough getting players to mesh with so little practice time. But there is a lot of talent on that team, so I expect they will be a factor as the tournament goes on.

How did Millbury try to downplay Backstrom's skill? I must've missed it.
The only thing I can recall is him initially crediting Alfredsson for the aggressive forecheck without saying much about Backstrom's role in the play.

All I had to do was log into my DirecTV account and I'm now able to watch the entire replay of the Sweden game in excellent quality.
Apparently, they have all kinds of live events and an extensive archive with all kinds of DVR type features.
I missed the 1st period on CNBC so now I'm getting a chance to watch it. I'm not even sure they showed the 1st period. I think they just switched over at the beginning of the 2nd.
Posted by: tmac2yao | February 17, 2010 10:29 PM | Report abuse
lol...
I've never watched curling in my life before the past couple of days.
It wasn't so much the Caps hockey withdrawal as my anticipation for more Olympic hockey.
It would be a sin to keep NHL players out of future Olympics. This is incredible stuff.
I've been a Caps fan for nearly 3 decades but I never got into Olympic hockey until this time around. I'm really enjoying it.

Aldred15: my only problem is with the speed at which the punishments are handed down. The Green suspension was announced almost immediately. They had almost a week before the announcement to send Janssen packing but they chose not to. while it may not be a conspiracy against the capitals it's one more stick to the pile of bias that they shove on us.
Posted by: remain | February 18, 2010 12:15 PM | Report abuse

I'm glad to hear that Matt Bradley seems to be recovering. Best wishes for a speedy recovery to Matt.
Put me down as one who thinks that this "entire NHL is against the Caps conspiracy" thing (or whatever you want to call it) is ludicrous.
The hit was late and the guy deserves a suspension. I would prefer they hand down the suspension later. With the Olympics going on it will be buried and forgotten about, but after the Olympics it will have more impact by getting more notice.
