Capitals sign Matt Hendricks to a two-year extension

By Katie Carrera

The Capitals have signed forward Matt Hendricks to a two-year extension worth $1.6 million, the team announced Wednesday.

Hendricks joined Washington on a professional tryout contract at the start of training camp and impressed the Capitals' coaches and front office to be signed to a one-year deal worth $575,000 this season. With 19 points (seven goals) and 84 penalty minutes in 57 games for the Capitals this season, Hendricks has quickly become a fan favorite.

Good for Matt...

Now where is the 2nd line center.

Congrats Matt! YOu deserve every penny and more!

I hope the timing of this news isn't some kind of smoke screen to cover up not making any deadline moves though.

Thanks for the unnessary shock to my body.I first read Capitals sign and without any other reading I get this great sense of relief/happiness that we signed a 2C or D through a trade. Then its Oh okay nevermind Damn it. Good that we have Hendricks for an extension hes a hard worker, but not what I was hoping for as far as headlines.

Posted by: washingtoncapitals | February 23, 2011 1:56 PM | Report abuse

Unlike the Poti extension, this one will receive unanimous approval from KA drinkers and GB drinkers alike.

I wonder why.

Posted by: tominsocal1 | February 23, 2011 1:58 PM | Report abuse

Congrats Matt. You deserve every penny of that plus more!

Posted by: j3rockstar | February 23, 2011 1:59 PM | Report abuse

You really think so Tom? I can see the complaints a year from now that Hendricks is taking up space making $800K that a Hershey guy making $200 less can do. There is no way to keep people in here happy.

Posted by: fanohock1 | February 23, 2011 2:00 PM | Report abuse

Sorry for the double post, folks. This is my first day using a computer machine on the interwebs.

Posted by: j3rockstar | February 23, 2011 2:01 PM | Report abuse

I meant to say $200K less, sorry.

Posted by: fanohock1 | February 23, 2011 2:02 PM | Report abuse

so that means boyd gordon is pretty much done after this year

Posted by: _stevo | February 23, 2011 2:04 PM | Report abuse

YEAH! Now THAT'S a smart signing. Congrats Hendy....you've earned it.

Posted by: goaliemama | February 23, 2011 2:07 PM | Report abuse

HAHAHAHA! I told everybody there'd be a signing today! LMAO. No this wasn't it. As a matter fact, I mentioned earlier this AM that Caps & Hannan expressed interest on an extension, I wonder if they said the same thing to Hendricks and he just happened to have a pen in his hand?

Posted by: pokerface1208 | February 23, 2011 2:08 PM | Report abuse

Good deal for both sides. Lets just hope it doesn't affect his attitude.

Posted by: chatton | February 23, 2011 2:09 PM | Report abuse

Hendricks is the MAN! Nice to see a thread with the majority of comments in the positive direction today!

Posted by: Bmorecaps | February 23, 2011 2:09 PM | Report abuse

fanohock,

I think you are wrong with that assessment as I believe the only complaining you heard this year was the resigning of BGordon who is consistently hurt and could have easily been replaced by Beagle for less salary. Hendricks on the other hand stays healthy and brings grit to the line up which is a trait desperately needed on this roster. Hendricks is also a pretty young guy himself.

Personally, I think they should part ways with Bradley after this season as well unless he is willing to take a pay cut. There are young studs waiting in the wings who can fill the role for a cheaper amount which can then be used to sign RFA's we want to keep and free agents.

Just my opinion.

Great News !!!!!!!!!
Congrats Matt. You deserve every penny of it and maybe even a little more!!!!! Keep on working the way you do.

Great signing - need more sand paper guys like him.

Posted by: lylewimbledon | February 23, 2011 2:13 PM | Report abuse

PhilR: I think resigning Matty (I doubt Hendy is his nickname, could be wrong) is a great move. This kid has done it the hard way but he's no fluke. He was runner-up for Mr. Hockey in Minnesota which is honor bestowed upon the best High School Hockey player. Minnesota High School hockey is nothing like High School hockey here in MD. Those kids are ranked in the NHL entry draft and play, with ice time, on Div I College teams straight out of high school.

Posted by: fanohock1 | February 23, 2011 2:14 PM | Report abuse

I don't know what Tom...'s deal is but Hendricks has done a whole lot right for very little cost. This deal has him making several hundred thousand less than what Steckel makes and Bradley will be making if he gets a new deal since he already is at 1 mil per. He's obviously outperformed Steckel. He's the new fighter on the team and he's better at it then Bradley-although Bradley has looked better lately, which is awesome. He hits, he works hard, he sacrifices his body, he scores, and he has upside. He can play all three forward spots and legitimately play center. And he's only getting 8 per season. What's not to like?

Posted by: ParticipatoryDemocracyNow | February 23, 2011 2:14 PM | Report abuse

@tom

Although everyone knows this was a good signing, you know cstanton will still find something wrong to blame GMGM on this one. My bet is something along the lines of, "GMGM should have done this a long time ago...and I would have given him $1.7. GMGM needs to go".

No chance we will see "Good job George."

@fanhock -

the nickname i've heard for hendricks was "hendo", but i could be wrong.

and good for "hendo" on the extension. he has certainly earned it.

Posted by: natresgroup | February 23, 2011 2:16 PM | Report abuse

Awesome! Couldn't have happened to a better guy. He plays hard out there every night and if anyone deserved a contract this year, it was him. I'd buy a Hendricks jersey, but they're too expensive, so maybe just a Hendricks t-shirt then.

Posted by: futbolclif | February 23, 2011 2:16 PM | Report abuse

PDM: No, Tom likes Hendricks. He was only saying "I wonder why" because both Goat blood drinkers and Kool-Aiders like what he brings to the team. Not to answer for him, but he fully supports this move.

@pokerface

the trade you referred to that you thought was extremely close...I heard it was put on hold this morning. Or maybe its a different trade, but the one I thought was gonna be done was put on hold this morning and will be revisited. And no its not for a 2C.

Has anyone else noticed that this is the first post in weeks maybe even months that the comment, for the most part, are positive :)

Maybe there is a light at the end of the cave after all :)

Love Matty Hendricks great move here.

And a trade not involving us getting a 2C? hmmmmm. Semin for Burns?

I can't imagine GMGM pulling the trigger on that one. I can't see him trading Semin.

These next few days will be interesting!

Posted by: digster1013 | February 23, 2011 2:23 PM | Report abuse

Semin for Burns isn't happening. You don't give up offense straight up jsut for a big D-man - you gotta get offense in return. But you never know these days. :)

No, it was nothing like that.

Posted by: ThePat | February 23, 2011 2:27 PM | Report abuse

Awesome. I love this guy... he's a high energy guy who's tough in the corners and is willing to throw down with anyone when the time calls for it. My only complaint is that they don't sell his jersey in the store... you have to pay like $100 extra to have it customized!

@SOMD HockeyCoach...first I must also commend you for a donation to wounded warriors, that is agreat move. As far as season ticket prices, the Caps for years have been below the NHL average and have always been playing catch up to what they charge for the product on the ice. As of today the Caps are tied for the 8th best record in the NHL, and I saw in an article at the start of the season that they were around 13 or 14th in average ticket price. Since Bruce was hired they are 173-75-38, so what is this crap that you speak of?...Lastly regarding Brooks, as a youth hockey coach shouldn't you be teaching the youngsters to be like Laich? I mean he is a second line player as to his production, but he loves the game of hockey, he loves his team, teammates and coach, is personable, hard working and unselfish. We could use a few more players with his character on any one of our professsional teams in DC.

Posted by: boomer44 | February 23, 2011 2:33 PM | Report abuse

@ boomer44

I agree you for the most part. While the caps maybe cheaper than others for season tickets there is no reason other than greed for the price jumps the last 3 years. While I understand it costs to put a quality product on the ice, there is nothing to say that we have to be in the top five for prices either, right?

While the record with BB is good its not what matters. Incase you missed it there is a large silver thing that teams strive to win every year and to date BB record as good as it maybe has not yeilded the cup.

Win the cup, then rape us for ticket prices !!!!!!!!

Posted by: bqts | February 23, 2011 2:39 PM | Report abuse

Is this signing and the rumored extension for Hannan a sign that we are looking to trade for someone with more then this season on their contract and we want to know the cap space our resigning will be taking up? On am I just hoping for Weiss too much.

High school hockey is huge in MN. They televise the games. The high school championships are played in XCel Energy Center and are sold out. If you are in contention for Mr. Hockey in MN almost everyone in the state knows your name. Minnesota high school teams would smoke MD high school teams, they're more like AAA travel teams.

Just adding a little to your post to try to get across how big a deal it is to be considered for Mr. Hockey in MN. I hope you don't mind.

Well put Boomer,
There is a great deal of demand for the season tickets, therefore prices can go up. It puts the squeeze on me a little, but I can't let them go. Still wonder how they will handle the overseas games, if they happen.

Posted by: _Mark | February 23, 2011 2:44 PM | Report abuse

Really like this signing! Congrats to Hendricks. But does anybody feel like this could be GMGM's way of making an obviously popular signing to deflect some criticism of not being able to make any good trades? I'm hoping that's not the case but I think everybody is expecting this monumental trade and GMGM knows it's not going to happen. Just a thought.......

Posted by: fanohock1 | February 23, 2011 2:16 PM

Absolutely. I'm 100% behind this. The "I wonder why" was totally sarcastic. I guess in this case I was so sarcastic, it was off the chart. What I meant was, "I wonder why (sarcastically) the Jimi (my nickname for Hendricks) extension is approved 100% (just like Neuvirth) whereas Poti extension was supported zero percent." As in, duh, Jimi signing makes sense while Poti is a total head-scratcher.

Look, whoever it was to knock, The Bradley Fighting Vehicle, if we bring him back at $800K (pay cut), $1M (same pay) or $1.05M (tiny raise), it has very little effect on the total cap. You're talking 1/2 of 1 percent.

Yeah I didn't think so Pat. Can't believe anything Ek says over at HockeyBuzz.

Do you think we make a deal?

Posted by: digster1013 | February 23, 2011 2:55 PM | Report abuse

fanohock1: If anyone here knocks McPhee 100% of the time, that's idiotic (see, I am a fence sitter). Trading Witt for the Varly pick, trading Emmy and #3 for the Carlson pick, snagging Green at #29, neuvy on Rd 2, Eakin in Rd 3 (so far looks good), signing Knuble, Hendricks, are all 100% supportable as top moves. Flash for Hannan, very good.

Semin at 6.7? I think most supported that, some did not, I would say I did.

Poti? And the 2005 draft? What was he thinking?

I'm on record as giving McPhee a "C" overall grade. One playoff round win since 1998, he's lucky to get that. So, even with those above great moves, the results aren't yet there.

No, not off the chart tom. I think 99% on here picked up your sarcasm. Perhaps 98.5% or maybe even 99.5% but were only talking 1/2 of 1 percent. Bottom line, we knew you approved the signing. =)

tominsocal,

It was me who stated we should part ways with Brads if he is unwilling to take a pay cut. A million is just too much for a player in his role as is the 1.1 that Stecks is making.....the only 3rd/4th line guys that should be getting that type of pay are guys like Clutterbuck IMO.

p.s. See? When management makes the right deal for the right player everyone supports them.

Posted by: BetterOffWithFedorov | February 23, 2011 3:18 PM | Report abuse

Dumb question, but does Hendy get 1.6 per year or total?

Posted by: capscoach | February 23, 2011 3:18 PM | Report abuse

PhilR: My point is Bradley is more valuable to the team than Steckel. The Steckel and Sloan extensions...?

Yes, you can replace Bradley cheaper if he had signed Asham. But why not instead sign Asham, keep Bradley and jettison Chimera? Then you have an extra $1M for your high-end player.

I'm guessing it will be 3.25-3.75 for Hannan. Two years also. Let's hope he can get that done. At least, apparently, he wants to. Some will say that's overpaying, but not in a world where Poti gets 2.875 for the next two.

You're ahead with 30 secs to play. You are coach and you need the crease cleared. Do you put out there Hannan and Ersk or Poti and Schultz?

$1.6 total...800 per.

Posted by: SeminAllOverTheIce | February 23, 2011 3:25 PM | Report abuse

I would also put out Hannan and Schultz...love Erskine, but he is too slow and still tends to fall out of position.

Posted by: capscoach | February 23, 2011 3:26 PM | Report abuse

Bradley is good for turning the momentum in a game around at least 2 to 3 games per season. If every player on the roster was good for 3 wins a season, you are talking 60 wins, which is pretty good. Bradley is definitely worth $1 mil per season. And Hendricks fills a similar role, to my thinking the team needs two more guys like Hendricks and Bradley. I always thought Laich would turn out to be like that kind of player, but I was wrong.

Posted by: piratusus | February 23, 2011 3:27 PM | Report abuse

If the Avs are shopping Paul Stastny, as they are according to Scott Burnside from Espn.com, we should package Semin along with Schultz for him and Adam Foote. Sparkle it with picks if the Avs want more.

Hannan and Erskine, any day, any time. tominsocal1's scenario called for someone to clear the crease. I have never actually seen Schultz clear a crease. I have seen him lift sticks and box people out, but I have never seen him clear a crease. Erskine did it two days ago and prevented a goal in the process. He obliterated Kennedy who was trying to poke home a loose puck.

I, too, think the Hendricks re-signing was a good one.

The reality is that it may indeed prove to be a great signing...or it may not.

FTR, I hope that it does work out.

I also won't be among those doing a 180ยบ and calling him "soft" or "bad signing" or "career AHLer" if it doesn't.

For those who believe that this signing is "a smokescreen to mask ineptitude at trading", or "a capitulation to fan pressure", or whatever:

Just keep in mind that--contrary to what some people may post here--GMGM's primary objective is not to torment fans or amass a huge scarf collection or wreck players' careers. It is to build a winning hockey club. FWIW, I believe that--competent or not--he truly is trying to do exactly that; it is foremost in his mind.
