Fedorov Deal Done; Update on Morrisonn

General Manager George McPhee just confirmed moments ago that Sergei Fedorov has agreed to terms on a one-year, $4 million contract. The contract still awaits Fedorov's signature, however.

'It's paperwork," McPhee said when asked about why the deal had not been announced. "We just have to do some administrative things."

He also praised Fedorov and said the Caps pretty much met his demands.

"In talking to Sergei, he was pretty firm in what he wanted and what his value was," McPhee said. "He's been a great player in this league, and we showed him respect and made it work."

"I saw the ability on the ice [but] I didn't think much about the leadership factor, although I should have," McPhee added. "He was incredible. I couldn't have been more impressed with him. And the way the players talked about him in our season-end meetings made it clear that this is a guy we have to have back."

Update:Defenseman Shaone Morrisonn's arbitration case has been scheduled for July 24.

I'm happy but please God, say it's not for $4 mil a year...

At least it's only for one year.

Posted by: Jon | July 9, 2008 3:37 PM | Report abuse

Excellent. Hopefully for less than the $4 mil reported, but great news regardless.

Posted by: jak | July 9, 2008 3:39 PM | Report abuse

I've been waiting for official confirmation to state an opinion (because I know you all think it's SO important), but I think this a good signing. $4 mil is a bit steep if it turns out to be the figure given, but I think Feds is worth it. His leadership is invaluable, and his veteran presence along with his world class talent are both welcome here indeed.

His line with Semin and Ovie won the Russians the Worlds, and he will only help them mature even more. He's versatile, and could play center on any of our top 3 lines. He pks with tenacity, and sets up the powerplay with poise. Plus seeing Fedorov on the back of a Washington Capitals jersey is just plain awesome. As a kid I only dreamed of it, now it's real. It's great to see players want to STAY in DC (frenchie being the exception), and hopefully it builds our rep more as a hockeytown.

I will be rocking the red more and more this year as my disposable income goes up, more tickets will be bought. I hope to convert my nonhockey watching friends into Caps nuts this season.

Get Mo signed, and Fehr deserves to make the team (barring a terrible camp). Hockey in July is awesome.

Chief,

What do you care how much The Caps spend on players?

Posted by: Who cares? | July 9, 2008 3:46 PM | Report abuse

So is everyone now satisfied that this is a done deal, or do you need to wait for confirmation that the ink on Fedorov's signature has dried?

Posted by: Jill | July 9, 2008 3:46 PM | Report abuse

I like the move, he brings a lot of experience and leadership to the team and can only help Ovie and Semin and Backie grow and mature. But I do think this means buh bye to Gordo.

Posted by: Mike | July 9, 2008 3:47 PM | Report abuse

This is obviously great news and his leadership and experience are worth more than 4 million a year. Way to go GMGM/Ted. Great to have Federov for at least another year. Hopefully he can help Semin mature a little.

Posted by: fansince74 | July 9, 2008 3:49 PM | Report abuse

Who Cares..its because Chief actually helps pay for the salaries himself..

Seriously though, anybody complaining about this isn't looking at the whole picture. We are essentially resigning a guy who is going to help mentor our two top stars in Semin and Ovie, not to mention we are basically getting two FA in Clark and Nylander back in the lineup.

Chill out Chief, ill throw a few dollars in to make this deal worth it.

Glad that its taken care of, pending signature of Feds, but 4 mil....good thing its only a 1 year deal.

Looks like Old Man River is trying to get that one last sizeable pay check.

Posted by: Pothier's Thumb | July 9, 2008 3:53 PM | Report abuse

Other teams tossed him a bone, yet the Caps pony up 4 million.

What happened to being so smart, so prudent ?
Banking on a goalie that bailed and now tossing more money than you can afford is a sign of the obvious, Weakness.

This off season (so far) is an incredible BUST. The team is no better than last year.

Seems like yesterday the Caps had "plenty of Cap room", now they are buried, loaded with payroll but without any major changes.

Real genius.

Posted by: Chief | July 9, 2008 3:54 PM | Report abuse

Yee-hah! It's extra tough to get to the Cup without at least one or two proven vets who have been there before--SF seems worth it despite the price tag for both the tangibles and the intangibles. And as for who gets left standing when the seats get filled ... probably Flash...

Posted by: Jim H | July 9, 2008 3:56 PM | Report abuse

ok, wait, I had a horrible thought. It goes something like this:

Sergi Fedorov just has to sign on the dotted line.

He calls his wife/girlfriend/female companion of the week (because with Sergi, I'm never quite sure) and says "Guess what, sweetie! We're going to Washington!"

She says "Oh, no! no no no no no! Call Ken Holland in Detroit and see if he'll take you back!"

Posted by: Birdie | July 9, 2008 3:57 PM | Report abuse

AMEN!!!!!!

Thank you GMGM for seeing the value he has in the locker room, because to me that is more important at this point, what he can teach all the young guys in the locker room to me is priceless!

This is a great day to be a Caps fan!!!!

Posted by: Puddin_an_Semin | July 9, 2008 3:57 PM | Report abuse

The 4 million will make signing Mo, Fehr and Gordon nearly impossible.

One theory i have seen is that the Caps will carry less than the standard 23 man roster for as long as possible. The Salary Cap is calculated each day, so if the Caps can have some leverage in the bank for later in the season if a trade deadline acquisition is needed.

If they go this route, guys who can start in Hershy without clearing Waivers likely will do so, and be brought up once they are needed.

Of course we could trade someone...but who? Kozlov isn't that expensive for the production he brought. Nylander has a NTC and is more valuable than people give him credit for, Flash is inexpensive....I dunno. It'll be interesting to see it play out.

Posted by: Jill | July 9, 2008 4:01 PM | Report abuse

I don't think a price can be put on leadership and respect. Obviously the players felt his leadership was invaluable and helped make the decision. Sometimes the glue on the team is more expensive than any one of the pieces. Chief just wants to complain as always. My son and I read the blog every day and Chief is just a negative person who really should find something else to do. It is easy to complain but hard to have hope. I guess Chief would rather the Caps follow the Redskins example of many pieces and no glue.

Chief,

Seriously, why do you give a sh!t how much The Caps spend on their players?

Posted by: Still- who cares? | July 9, 2008 4:02 PM | Report abuse

@Chief

Do you watch baseball? You remember the Yankees of the late 90's? All their home grown products, Jeter, Posada, Rivera, and on and on. They came up together and won....what was perhaps the most important ingredient to that team, an aging Paul O'neil that provided unbelievable experience and leadership.

The fans fell in love with the team bc they basically watched them grow up. Much like is going on here. Great young talent and chemistry with positive veteran leadership can take you places. Whether we win a Cup or not, it is being done the right way from an ownership and management stand point no matter how much you hate Leonsis and McPhee.

Posted by: Pat | July 9, 2008 4:02 PM | Report abuse

chief, your hero's in philly will be paying danny breier $7M when he's 36. he's never won a hart or a stanley cup. if they lost out on him by offering only $1M you'd say they were being cheap and disrespectful. we get it, every move is horrible. nobody will sign here, they dont respect players, blah blah. you become more entertaining as the days go by.

$4M is steep, but it's only for one year. the downside is if it costs them someone like gordon who has more long term upside than feds.

What are you guys complaining about? They're still around 4-5 million under the cap. They have plenty of space to sign Morrison, Fehr, and Gordon. Fehr and Gordon won't get more than 1 million a piece. Morrison will get signed for no more than 2 million.

As far as not not being any better than last year, we didn't need to improve that much. We had the 4th best record in the league under Boudreau. This is a young team that is now a year older and more experienced. This is a Cup contending team. QUIT COMPLAINING!!

During last season's home stretch Fedorov more than made up for the leadership void created when Kolzig was given the bench.

The way I see it, Fedorov gets his $4 million because of that intangible he brings to the locker room.

so break down the $4 million this way:

$2.5 million for on ice performance
$1.5 million for off ice performance, i.e. babysitting Semin....

It's a grat, grat dhay, todhay -- even the Scots agree: It's a great day when resign two proven leaders who help the Caps do even better this last year. I just don't see another team in the SE, besides maybe Carolina, competing for 3rd or better overall in the east. The Caps have great leadership, chemistry, and almost all the right pieces to go farther in the playoffs. Thier forwards and defense improved greatly from the season before. ShaMo, Schultz, and Green got a lot better and will continue to improve. Add Alzner and Poti, you have 5 legit blueliners. Jurnica, Erksine, and others can fill in the last spot. The Caps are flush with really good centers now. The LW position is in great shape, and with Clark's return, the RW is in good shape. Let's pray that JT plays with this group.

I'm very happy Fed is a Cap. He's aging and might sustain some injuries playing against top shut down lines, but thats the risk.
I think that Nylander might be trade bait before the season starts. We have a lot of centers and he would bring in a quality D. Just thinking outloud now that this Fedorov deal is done.

Posted by: once a whiner... | July 9, 2008 4:39 PM | Report abuse

They can pay any thing they want for a one year contract as far as I am concerned. $4M for a cup winning veteran that has strong leadership skills and the respect of our young stars is worth much more than that. It was a bargain. some people act like it is another Jagr deal or something. If this team can only do the same thing for a whole season as they did after the coaching change, this is a cup contending team now. With the addition of Nylander, Clark and a defenseman or two up from Hershey, this could be a very fun year. I wonder how many points Ovie can get with Federov feeding him all year? And with Nylander back we have a legit 3 lines for other teams to contend with and they can't gang up on the Ovie line. The move had to be made if we are to contend this year. The only position that worries me is goalie. I hope there is a kid in Hershey that is ready, or Johnson is ready to take a bigger role, because the guy we picked up is dog meat for weeks at a time.

a bit much for FEDS. I would have liked a 2.5-3mil. deal at the most. Great job by GMGM. The FA market was really overpriced this year so 4mil is a great deal for feds who does everything. come on when players like finger i have never heard of are making 3.75mil and redden.

Posted by: D Fishman | July 9, 2008 4:43 PM | Report abuse

No way Feds is going to be first line center, assuming Nyls comes back and is at full strength Feds is 3rd line center, the main thing his age will affect is his stamina so we'll want him playing 3rd line minutes to save up for when he really shines on PP and PK.

I don't understand the talk of trading Nyls, I'd rather see Kozzie go than Nylander.

If he was the first line center for the National team, why do you think he can't do it for the Caps? After all team Russia got gold beating Canada, Finland, Sweden, etc.

Feds can play on any line, but I'd rather see him with Ovechkin and Backstrom with Semin. They just fit really well. Besides Kozlov and Feds are buddies, closer age, etc.

This is a great, great signing.

$4 million is fine for 1 year. He brings WAAAAAYY more to the table than anyone who we POTENTIALLY would miss out on, be that Mo, Gordon, Jurcina, Erskine, or even other trade bait such as Kozlov.

For a young team, having a guy like Fedorov around is hayooooge.

Neuvirth, to my surprise, just pulled off a pretty sick save on his back. Nice. An out of character moment.

All in all, these kids are playing at a solid ECHL level. I'm sort of disappointed that Alzner isn't standing above the crowd. I think (this is not scientific, or even based on anything but my own memory and perception) he's -1 on the game.

Most impressive feature of their play so far: overall passing percentage approximately .006% (same caveat as before). Weak passing due to chemistry issues is one thing. This is another species of problem. Hopefully by Sat when the big crowd comes out, these kids are going to have a better game to show off.

On the plus side of the ledger I see a lot of grit and desire, a lot of nice poke checks and a lot a guys showing good balance taking hits. And Jake Hauswirth can place a wrister like a champ. He scored a sweet one vs Varly top shelf glove side and he couldn't have put it tighter in the corner w/out ringing the steel.

Carlson and Alzner have both shown defensive lapses (against, again, approximately ECHL level talent). They both have strong upsides, (Carlson patrols like a shark and def has keen hockey sense) but I'm not sure I'd get too excited about them starting the season.

But then again, I'm no pro scout and this is day 3 of development camp.

That's what I see after 2 periods for what it's worth.

I don't know if a 38 year old can consistently log the time a 1st line center will need to log. Maybe at the beginning, but then he may wear down in the home stretch and the playoffs. Remember, he was only getting Bradley-like icetime in Columbus before he left.

I'd just leave Backie with Ovie but maybe pair Feds with Semin. Of course, that leaves Nylander at 3rd line center, which doesn't make much sense. Although with his playmaking abilities, maybe he will help show us who an up-and-coming scorer will be - maybe Fehr, Flash, or ??

Feds - best veteran leadership available? Since when does being a prima dona = veteran leadership skills? Here's a guy who's never been a captain, wasn't one of the leaders in the Detroit dressing room, no idea what his role was in Anaheim or Columbus - he was barely a blip on their or the NHL's screens, and is known as a slacker when he doesn't get his way. For those who think this signing means the Caps will win the Cup - keep dreaming - he WAS on your team this past playoff year, remember? Ovechkin gave him a GREAT pass & he totally missed - he looked completely lost! He could've proved his value right then and there, instead he showed what he IS - the shadow of a man who used to be a great player.

my guess is that there are at least 25 GM's/Owners, who at the drop of a hat, would completely trade franchises with the Caps, if the opportunity presented itself. That figure might be low.

Great news. Can't wait for the season.

There's a lot of noise on here lately. Not much worth responding to.

Laich's deal makes sense to me. I think that one really works for both sides. We saw good development this year from him and there's no reason to expect less from him for the forseeable future.

Fedorov's contract is a bit rich, but I think a good investment for the team. When he came in you could see the team relax and their confidence rise.

Overall, a pretty good hockey day.

So because Feds is signed it means Washington is going to win the cup?

All of a sudden everyone is saying how great this signing is. Last week everyone was saying that if he wanted 4mil and wouldnt budge, then let him go.

Fair weather...fair weather.

Man...Being from Pittsburgh sucks..this place has nothing to offer, and everyone I see depressed me. I would love to live in a great city like Washington. Even their hockey team is going to be good, and will probably beat my beloved Penguins. Crosby seems to be getting lapped by Ovechkin and it makes me want to cry.

At least I am still making strides to denegrate them on their own message board..I am so clever! Have to go, mom is calling me..we are having grilled cheese tonight, and dad just got home with a fresh gallon of milk he must of got free at work!

To all you saying this is too much money, I agree. However, its not so much money that we shouldn't be VERY HAPPY. Fedorov is a rare breed of player that makes EVERYONE better around him. In the lockerroom on the PK, on the bench, just having him around will make our kids better players. He will be a shining example of how to handle situations on the ice or off. His worth is intangible.

I can't rememeber, are the numbers in NHL aribtrations public (or semi-public)? In baseball it tends to leak out "team offers X, player wants y". I'm curious what Mo thinks he worth. Not because I necessarily assume he isn't worth that (in fact, likely the opposite), but I wonder how much of a low ball the QO was.

And big announcement:
Caps announce new VP of PR: Chief!
Chief immediately criticizes his hiring in a local blog.

Hauswirth just got his 2nd. Strong. Kevin Clark put him in position to place his shot after making a strong move into the crease. His second strong offensive play I noted from Clark.

On the other side Maxime Lacroix has a goal to show for a few sick plays to the goal.

Roger #94 likes Pinnizzotto's PP play.

There's a lot to see down here.

Glad someone who knows something about hockey will be drawing up our lines other than GIVE IT UP! But i do agree that there are only a small handfuls of GM's that like their own team beter than the caps. Of course most of them would trade their whole team for Ovie, Backstrom, and Semin wiht some of us thrown in to round out a line-up. I can play a little in the goal....

Posted by: DaMan | July 9, 2008 5:44 PM | Report abuse

25 Owners/GM's would want to trade places w/ the Caps? WOW some of the Caps fans really are delusional!!! How many times have the Caps even gotten into the playoffs in the past 10 years? How many years in a row have they sold out every game of the regular season? And let's face it - had Carolina not fallen apart in the last month of the regular season - no chance of the Caps getting into the playoffs w/ or w/out Federov! LOL. So, yes, 25 teams wanting to trade places w/ the caps? Whatever you're on - its time to stop.

Posted by: Y2K | July 9, 2008 5:45 PM | Report abuse

I´m really suprised that the signing of Fedorov has divided the Capsfans i theese 2 groups.
Surely everybody who has any knowledge about the importence of group-chemistry, the mix of talent and experience, are delited that the Caps managed to sign Fedorov.
Now that Kolzig is gone it´s even more importent to get someone with that experience in the group. It looks really interesting this year.
We now have:
The experience needed in Nylander, Clark, Fedorov, Kozlov.
The threats needed in Ovechkin, Semin, Bäckström and Green.
The fists needed in Brashear.
The Coach needed in Boudreau.
The other players in the roster whos workethic and mentaliy give the stars the opportunity to shine so bright.

(please forgive my bad spelling, i´m from sweden, but still a huge caps-fan)

I think you are right if you are saying that there were not 25 GM's that would have traided their teams LAST year, but if you talk to GM's, they know that last year is a long way back and their job's depend on NEXT year, so yeah what we are on is a 4th best record the last 80% of the season and the defending league MVP plus all those little scoring awards, Coach of the year, runner up to the rookie of the year, leading scoring defenseman, several players coming off a world hockey championship....yeah I think there a re few envious GM's out there. What else you got?

Individual Successes? Oh wow - what a GREAT franchise. Again - how many times have the Caps made it to the playoffs in the past 10 years? How many Stanley Cups have they won? How many regular season games have you sold out over the past 10 years? 4th best record last 80% of the season - LOL that is the funniest thing I have ever heard, where did you find that gem at or you just make that up? - you know the season starts in October, right? A padded record against a junk division. World Hockey Championship - LOL. Keep dreaming Caps fans - if you keep on looking to "next year" - you'll keep up your pace of making the playoffs once or twice every 10 years.

I know the arbitrator's award is made public, but, I'm not sure how much of the arguments of both sides are public knowledge. But, just because the 2 sides have an arbitration date, doesn't mean the sides won't agree before then. So Morrisonn could very well be signed to a deal before July 24th.

Posted by: Long Time Cap Fan | July 9, 2008 6:18 PM | Report abuse

Anyone know why the Caps weren't interested in signing Ray Emery? I saw an article that said he signed for $2million US in the new Russian league. I mean that's pretty cheap for a guy who took his team to the Stanley Cup finals. I know he's had some issues, but I'd like to think that the presence of Ovechkin & Federov would've helped keep him in line. Theodore scares me...he set his team up to fail in the 2nd round by selfishly playing with the Flu for TWO games! I question his mental toughness.

Posted by: bernie | July 9, 2008 6:18 PM | Report abuse

Y2K: cool off and have a soft drink. I don't think anyone on this blog is saying that the Caps are a storied franchise. And unless you're a Wings or Habs fan (which I doubt), I think the chances are good that your favorite team doesn't have much pedigree either. So pipe down about sellouts and years in the playoffs.

I guarantee you EVERY GM/Owner in the league would like to have a young franchise player or two like we have to build around.

And you should be disabused of the notion that the Caps were gifted the playoffs. Carolina went 10-5 between March 1 and April 4--that's hardly falling apart. We just happened to go 13-4 over the same span.

I think Einstein had something to say about that.

Let's see - Detroit, Pittsburgh, Philly, San Jose, Anaheim, NJ, NY Rangers, Tampa Bay, Minnesota, Dallas, Colorado, Chicago, and at the very least ALL the Canadian Teams - would 100% NOT want to trade places with the Caps. Talk to Columbus, LA or Atlanta about having that young franchise player - they have those in Ilya, Anze & Rick Nash - & do other teams want to trade places with them - heck no! Caps are just lucky they play in a horrible division and an eastern conference where most of the teams are constantly 'rebuilding.'
Success in sports is measured by banners, championships, playoffs, and consistency.

dude people who cares - Montreal & Detroit are model franchises, but even they have had their ups & downs. (glad Carolina fell apart at the end, made it easier for the Caps to squeak in). seriously though - why didn't the Caps go after Emery? cheaper than Jose & has Stanley Cup finals experience.

Sure he was a head case last season in Ottawa (so is Avery), but figured that playing with Federov & Ovechkin would be a good change for him & keep him in line. He IS a very talented goalie. Not sold on Jose at all (although better than what the Avs got to replace him).

Caps are the "best" - LOL - um, they lost in the first round - hadn't made the playoffs since? Banners - um, you know anything about hockey? - when the team wins that big shiny silver cup - the winning team gets to put up a pretty banner in their building - you know those things hanging from the rafters. The players get pretty rings too & tiny replica's of the Stanley Cup. You fairweather fans crack me up. So, let me get this straight - to some of you fairweather fans success is losing a bunch of years to get the #1 pick in the draft (next year - watch the draft lottery & draft - its fun stuff). Hossa just signed w/ Detroit for the chance to Win the Stanley Cup - if he just wanted to play with a young stud like Crybaby Crosby he could've. Its all about winning the Cup - even Ovechkin knows that.

LOL, Y2K might be right about something- Toronto fans are NUTSO as are their players who don't want to waive their No trade clauses to go play for a chance to win the Cup or give their team draft picks- wouldn't surpise me if they wouldn't want to trade rosters with the Caps - funny stuff.

And considering the line combos are practically the same as they were last year with the exception of alzner for pothier, fedorov to the third and a healthy clark, youre accusing the reigning Coach of the Year of not knowing anything about hockey.

.......Oh I see what it is, I just scrolled up and apparently you have your heart set on fedorov centering ovie all year. awwww, thats cute. Wake Up. Backstrom and Ovechkin are the future of the team. I dont know anything becasue I have fedorov penciled in as the third line center, while logging heavy minutes on the pp and pk? oh, ok.

@ Bernie
What about being on a team where all of the essential elements are barely post-pubescent and are struggling to grow into top shelf performers equals emery grows up?

He's the Terrell Owens of the NHL. Gabby has enough to worry about.

Ray Emery
31GP; 12-13-4; 0 Shutouts; 3.13GAA; .890S%
Jose Theodore
53GP; 28-21-0; 3 Shutouts; 2.44GAA; .910S%
Holey Kolzig
54GP; 25-21-6; 1 Shutout; 2.91GAA; .892S%

He couldn't even play up to kolzig level. Holey also knows how to get to the SC. And lose. Donny Beaupre did that once also (isn't that right, Don Beaupre?). That's not a bulletproof credential.

Ray Emery is the last thing this team needs.

With everything that is going on, I truely believe that the Caps will be better off, releasing morrison, pothier, and gordon. Take a look at some of the remaining FA's and the younger (and more productive) guys in our system, and it makes perfect sense. Yes Gordon will be missed on the PK, but with a (hopefully) healthy Clark, and Fehr, Gordon won't be missed that much. Morrison, and Pothier are expendable. Alzner will crack the line up and therefore take the place of Morrison, and mark my words, Lepisto will make the team, and take the place of Pothier, with those moves we will more solid on the D.

also there are some remaining good D on the FA market. I am worried however about the Goalie situation. Theodore, yes when he is on he is great, but you can't rely on him always being on. I expect him to come out shaky, but return to his Vezina form from a couple of years ago. I hope that is.

It IS all about winning the Cup - even Ovechkin knows that. Glad you realize that (at least in one of your posts) - you seemed to just suggest that it was about making the playoffs 1 year. But adding 2 players who peaked several years ago in Theodore & a decade ago in Federov doesn't guarantee the Caps will win the cup, or even make the playoffs! Go ask Detroit how those Wendel Clark or Robert Lang deals worked out for them, or Jagr w/ NY Rangers, or Pittsburgh about Hossa, or Colorado about Adam Foote & Forsberg. Adding a former Hart/Selker winner or a former Vezina winner does NOT guarantee success.

Okay - while Y2K's comments may be oddball, suggesting someone "kill themselves" is completely out of line & I'm pretty sure against the Washington Post's rules about posting - I hope that post gets removed, I am disgusted someone would write that (& not have the gumption to actually post their name is pathetic). We're all hockey fans first and foremost. The dude has enough common sense to realize how great Ovie is.

Guys - just IGNORE him, by commenting you're only encouraging more crazy comments.

Come on guys -true hockey fans have class even when others are being morons & spewing stupid ramblings.

Hey guys, sorry for all the bad stuff I've been typing. My pals here at Melwood bet me a dollar that I couldn't go on the internet box and make new friends. I win!! YEAH! When I get home from my job at the cafeteria tomorrow, I will put some more stuff into the internet machine. See you then

Wait, you mean the thing where he said he'd trade all his trophies to bring the Cup to DC? That part? And then the part where he wanted Fedorov back in DC? And the part where he said he would trust Theodore? Those smart hockey points? Because I don't think he was being funny then.

@HolyOlie

You rock man! Thanks!

BTW how did BB look playing with the Kids? How did he get hurt? Somebody's check?

Posted by: mauree | July 9, 2008 10:05 PM | Report abuse

Thanks Mauree!! Most of the Caps fans I've encountered have been pretty nice, especially when I've gone to Caps games wearing my Lidstrom jersey (pre-Captain days jersey - been my favorite since his rookie year) & the Wings weren't playing. Yah, I get slack being a Wings Fan in DC (born & raised in Michigan), but the Caps are my Eastern Conference team! Hockey fan first & foremost!

WOW, some people are on edge tonight! Sheesh! Ease up people! Your team is better than a lot of the ones in the Eastern Conference!

Posted by: Sarah | July 9, 2008 10:08 PM | Report abuse

mauree,

Thanks.

It wasn't BB, it was Andy Boudreau. He hit the boards awkwardly and had to be helped off the ice. Didn't return. I think I heard somewhere that it's a knee injury.

haha, Sarah, you should be here more often! This is actually tame for the most part. We don't have many trolls, but they tend to unleash the worst in the best behaved folks.
mauree,
"Victor Bartley (64) loves to hit. Maybe too much. He was involved in a hit that hurt a blue team player and he was called for a penalty for roughing after hitting another up high."
I'm assuming that's how the kid got hurt. I hope its not too serious.

Posted by: jmu_capsgirl | July 9, 2008 10:13 PM | Report abuse

I don't think he should kill himself, either. I'd be sorry to miss that rare insight and cutting edge, informed commentary.

Posted by: Anonymous | July 9, 2008 10:23 PM | Report abuse

LOL - yah, I'm going stir crazy w/ no hockey. (BTW HolyOlie - those training camp pics are AWESOME!). I got spoiled by being able to watch every playoff game that I wanted on TV. I generally don't post, but saw all the Federov commentary - still got a soft spot for that guy even if he left us. Glad to see he played well in DC last year & is going to be around. I think that's what the Caps had been missing after the lockout, that solid veteran presence (who has won the Cup) to help Ovie & the younger players develop. I mean Ovie's had an amazing career thus far, but come playoff time - its nice to have someone who's been there before & is a calming influence (ie - it helped Detroit get past that awful game 5 OT loss in the Finals).

Posted by: sarah | July 9, 2008 10:37 PM | Report abuse

@whoever was going off about Caps barely squeaking into the playoffs

*blows in his/her ear* Here, have a refill. Remember a little name called Glen Hanlon? Yeah, that guy they pitched out the Verizon Center doors on Thanksgiving Day. Boo got the Caps into the playoffs with Kolzig (whose numbers were in the bottom five in the league) sitting goalie for all but the last two months and after the Glen Hanlon start and getting to know the players in the middle of the year. The pace they put up the last two months was what, a 98-point pace or something crazy (I don't have the numbers easily accessible, but it was something ridiculous like that). Look at what he's got now with a training camp and a development camp under his belt and players he already knows. I daresay we'll do a tad better with the same team, yes.

I googled whining and diving and clicked on the 2nd linnk, then watched the imbedded youtube vid. Awesome! I hate that music, but it was perfect for the video. You should all go watch it if you haven't. Its worth the 2:30.

It is about winning a cup, but its not an easy cup to win. The pens made it all the way but couldn't win in the finals, not because they weren't good but because its hard. This is the 1st time Washington has had such amazing promise in 30 years. You know what, if all that junk got me Ovechkin, I'm do it all again the same way. This is the most exciting team in the NHL, bar none. Ovechkin, Semin Backstrom, Green, Nylander, Fedorov and Brashear? Are you kidding me? Do you have any idea how long I dreamed of having a team with half that many great players? A little heavy upfront, but Alzner and the others in the wings still brings promise. This is the best Caps team i've ever seen. We have more firepower than any Caps team before us. Sign Semin for the rest of his career too, he's sick. Sick, i tell you.

For once, its easy to be a Caps fan.

By the way, apparently Bruce's kid Andy tore his MCL yesterday. Some people on the Caps boards said they heard Bruce on XM talking about it today. Poor kid.

Posted by: Sombrero Guy | July 10, 2008 11:58 AM | Report abuse

Yeah, I heard the tail end of that on XM.. he went into the boards pretty hard.

Posted by: Jordan | July 10, 2008 12:06 PM | Report abuse

That was his son? Man. I knew he had a young son and an older daughter, but didn't think Andy was his kid. Getting hurt at camp really stinks. Hopefully his recovery goes well and he can get back out on the ice quickly. Wishing him well!

Posted by: jmu_capsgirl | July 10, 2008 12:07 PM | Report abuse

Is there a list of all the camp invitees? As in, not the draftees, but the other guys called in?

While looking at HolyOlie's pictures, I noticed a lot of names I didn't recognize, including this Hauswirth kid who had a hat trick yesterday.

Anyone got a list of who these kids are? And where they come from?

Posted by: DrinkingPartner | July 10, 2008 12:08 PM | Report abuse

If you can get ahold of the printed roster they had at the rink, it lists where each guy will be playing.. don't think it specifies exactly who was invited though

Posted by: HolyOlie | July 10, 2008 12:24 PM | Report abuse

Sombrero Guy,

The problem is that list only has draftees on it, not invitees. Off the top of my head, I don't see Aymot, Boudreau, Crowder, or Hauswirth on that roster.

We need ShaMo. With our forwards set to go, we need to keep developing the defensemen until they are a solid, rugged group.

Without Morrison, there is no end-to-end rushes from Greenie, as has been well documented.

Hopefully, his price tag wont be too high but will keep him happy.
