McPhee on trade talk, C. Bourque
With the NHL draft just a few minutes away, GM George McPhee said there's been a lot of tire kicking recently but was quite adamant that he does not expect to make a trade tonight.
"We made a lot calls the last few days and it's quiet," McPhee said. "We're just expecting to make picks tonight."
McPhee also said reports of pending restricted free agent Chris Bourque signing in Russia are premature.
"It's not true as far as we know," McPhee said. "He's on a roster over there, so I think that's something they're contemplating. But he told Doug Yingst in Hershey that it's premature."

And another twist - ESPN reports Hamhuis will test the FA market. Also Florida sent Ballard to Vancouver for Bernier and tonight's 25th pick.

I can't believe Vancouver would give up so much for Ballard!!!

I can't believe two of the top 5 guys according to the rankings still haven't been taken. I am surprised that the Caps have not tried to trade up to take Fowler or Gormley

@icehammer97
I'm sure 28 other GM's are trying to do the same thing.
The Rangers are being stupid.......again. Gotta love that pick!

Move up georgie...
Rangers choke!

@thomas Except the 10 or so that have passed over both of them since they were ranked to go. Oh there goes Fowler

If defenseman like that fall 7 or 8 spots, I have to believe that Jarred Tinordi will be there at #26.

Forgive the naive Q:
Typically listen to Caps Report the day after whose link is easily on the main page. If you miss it in a busy period (ala now), do you know how you can access it? I have tried Multimedia, etc but no luck.
Any help appreciated.

Does anyone else think that Bourque can make the team and be productive? I think he is a late bloomer and can be a 2nd or 3rd line guy for the Caps in '10-'11. He had an awesome season for Hershey and was great in the playoffs. Giroux and Aucoin are career AHL'ers, but I believe Bourque can make it.

And now for my plug...tomorrow morning on Japers' Rink Radio Tarik is going to be on the show to talk the draft and free agency. We go live at 10 am EST (Tarik on shortly thereafter) at www.blogtalkradio.com/japersrinkradio and the show is archived there and on itunes as well.

Trade was more involved - 2 players and a pick one way, 2 players the other way. Ballard and Victor Oreskovich (probably spelled it wrong) went to the Canucks, Bernier, Grabner and a pick went to the Panthers. And it is conditional on who is available at 25th - if one of the Canucks' top picks is there, then the trade is off.

Up yours Montreal!
Boy, dad sure looks old and a bit overweight.

@ timmyv38
Thanks exactly my point. Oreskovich is just a throw in. He's comparable to Steckel, but on the wing and a little more physical. He'll never be more than a 3rd line player. Bernier's been hindered by injuries, but he'll be a good 2nd line wing. Grabner has loads of potential and will be a top 6 player. Besides that, Vancouver gives up their 1st. That's just ridiculous for the Canucks. Tallon did extremely well.

Here is the rss feed for the Capitals report. http://capitals.nhl.com/podcasts/capitalsreport.xml
You should be able to just download an mp3 of the audio there (non-itunes). For JRR, the blogtalkradio site allows for download too in a non-itunes format.

i wonder if caps go for kirill kabanov
Posted by: samb99 | June 25, 2010 10:13 PM | Report abuse
thomas20, I had thought there was more people involved - I thought I had seen 3 players each way. Still, I'd agree with your assessment - Grabner did a decent job of replacing Daniel Sedin for a portion of the season and Bernier is a 2nd/3rd liner. Doesn't seem to me that Ballard is worth that. The question is, will the trade go through or are the Canucks going to cancel it?

This is a steal. This kid has immense Talent. 2 years away but could be a HOME RUN!
Posted by: lightshow | June 25, 2010 10:39 PM | Report abuse
He has had two really nice U18 World Junior Tournaments. Scored 13 pts in 7 games in 08 and 12 pts in 7 games in 09.
Very exited about this pick. Type of skill level that we will need to have in 2 years once some of our current players become UFA's and we will need more high end talent in our pipelines to come in.
Posted by: lightshow | June 25, 2010 10:47 PM | Report abuse
@lightshow
good to hear. I was hearing the Caps were looking at him and you're spot on: three years from now, when he's ready to step in, we'll be needing high end skill at low cap-hit prices. The one scary thing is that if he's super good, the KHL can offer more than an NHL entry level contract. Will be interesting to see where Kabanov falls to.

Something needs to happen...whether today or over the next few weeks. We don't HAVE to get both a SAH Dman and a strong 2nd line center...but we need at least one.
