Green, Bourque Set to Play

Based on the morning skate, it appears Mike Green (ribs/side) will play tonight at RBC Center and Milan Jurcina will be the odd defenseman out.

"I feel fantastic," Green said. "We'll see what they say, but it's up to me."

Meantime, Chris Bourque, who was recalled from Hershey yesterday, will suit up and skate on the fourth line with David Steckel and Matt Bradley. I'm also expecting Alexander Semin and Alex Ovechkin to play on different lines tonight.

I'll have a little more later this afternoon.

Glad to see that Green will be back. Will miss you, Juice, but maybe you need a day off.

Mmmm - Glad Greenie's playing, but not sure I would have chosen to sit Juicy. Put Potsy in every other game. He's looking better, but not back to full strength yet, and the Canes are a quick team ...

Green's a good guy...he even said he knew about OV was going to do after the goal "I WANT NO PART OF THAT"
than he even skated in to mess it up..
Cant wait until OV gets his pay back

I agree with you, Rachel. Seems that StanleyCup1907 and PuckGuru are the most negative posters on this board. Speaking of negative posters, I've noticed that Windjammer has been conspicuously absent lately.

Potsy is good vs the Canes, he's quicker than Juice.

I find it comical how all of these anti-Ovechkin folks keep whining about pay-back but Ovechkin is always the one delivering the big hits.

I do hope Greenie is ok and I'm very happy to see Bourque back up with the big club. I think he will add something to whatever line he is on.

I would like to see someone try to hit Ovie. See what happens, he will hit you back even harder and he'll score 3 times on you, so all those idiots like Cherry and SC1907 can't keep on saying Ovie is going to get cut in half.

Laing update from Corey at the Times:

The Caps are going through the morning skate here at RBC Center. Mike Green and Donald Brashear are on the ice. So is Chris Bourque, who was called up to replace Quintin Laing, who is still in a Tampa hospital. A team spokesman said Laing's doctor is going to wait until Monday to decide whether to do surgery on Laing's spleen.

Boyd Gordon is also now going on the ice, sans one glove because of his broken finger.

Glad to see Green is back, I like Borque too even if I wish Laing was ok.

Wasn't it Green who was part of the group that came up with the idea and told him to do it? I...guess that means he didn't approve? Yeah, that logic doesn't make any sense to me either.

Greenie does his fist pump and slam the glass himself after most of his goals. Hell everyone around the league is jumping into the glass now...change the code I say. Everyone looks like they're enjoying their sport a little more and the fans actually thinking it's enjoyable as well isn't a negative thing.

I was waiting for someone from Tampa to express their displeasure the rest of the game. Good thing I didn't hold my breath. I'll just wait to see someone try to "payback" Ovie for being himself. Remember kids, when you mess with the bull...you're going to get the horns.

Isn't it a shame that two players from the same team will finish 1-2 in the scoring title? Also, why does "AO" have more goals than assists... 'cause he is a puck hog and doesn't have the skill to pass the puck which can be just as exciting as scoring on a wrist shot!
Posted by: 8isgreatnot | March 21, 2009 12:20 PM

That’s because you only have two good players on your team. There are many players that can pass the puck, but not many that have a knack for scoring goals like Ovechkin. Any GM would take a dominant goal scorer over an assist man any day. I’d much rather have balanced scoring attack and we have a great center thank you very much.

Ovie: 93 points
Backstrom: 75 points
Semin: 70 points
Green: 63 points

Malkin: 104 points
Crysby: 94 points

I'd take ours over yours any day of the week!

The same "traditionalist" about hockey in regards to celebrating are the same ones who love staged fighting/want it to be removed entirely/love instigator rule/etc.

quite the contrarian stance there.

Posted by: richmondphil | March 21, 2009 1:15 PM | Report abuse

Nothing breeds "spin" and hating like zealots. Grapes should thank Ovechkin, he gets more promo time now than ever. Frown publicly, count your money in private...ah, the glory of the Code.

Posted by: Davethecapsfan | March 21, 2009 1:15 PM | Report abuse

Also, I am a true traditionalist.

I propose that every player and goalie must not wear a helmet. They must also start to use wooden sticks again. Pucks must be real rubber and not synthetic. Also, all goalies must play a really crappy stand up style.

Posted by: richmondphil | March 21, 2009 1:16 PM | Report abuse

This is an answer a couple of bloggers commenting on my last post.

@CDon
Get over what? Posting my opinion? It seems like you should get over my opinion.

You obviously missed the point. Boswell took a player's opinion about the game and converted it into an opinion of the business side which was never the intention of that player. Worse, he call him a moron, when in fact the moron is Boswell for the lack of understanding a very obvious reference to the game and not the business. What does you and Boswell care how the league is managed? Do you think the people running the league, owners included, are moron business people who need your advice or the advice of an idiotic two bit writer?

Have a good trip to Carolina and enjoy the game, I am sure the owners will be fine.

@The_Spear
By your little attempt to sarcasm, I can deduct you don't enjoy the game of hockey as much as you enjoy the atmosphere. That is cool, a lot of people feel the same way as you, the sport is secondary to what is around the event. You don't need hockey, you can go to football, professional wrestling, and the circus and to you it will be the same. For me, I don't need a full stadium to see a great game, actually, I will prefer no to sit next to some of the obnoxious morons that infiltrate the place.

I have played hockey for over 25 years and OV's celebration are no worse that some that Gretzky did or Mario did. The old school people need to get a grip. If you don't want him to celebrate then don't let him score 1 on 3 from above the circles. And when will everyone learn that OV is kid having fun. All of his celebrations are done with good nature and don't demean the other team or the goalie he just beat. He hasn't crossed the line yet and deserves the admiration of hockey fans everywhere!

Posted by: rachel216 | March 21, 2009 1:26 PM | Report abuse

8isgreatnot: You're a fool stating that Ovechkin has more goals than assists because he is a puck hog. Out of all of the points leaders he is the most balanced. He has 50 goals and 43 assists, that makes him a threat as a scorer and a passer. Of course Crosby's goal total would be good enough for 3rd on the Caps, and only one goal ahead of our Norris Trophy Candidate Green.

StanleyCup1907: What is wrong with you. "The Code," you mean the code that 4th liners don't take runs at your superstars, oh Matt Cooke tried to the last two time the Caps and Pens played. There have been celebrations for decades and the reason they are more flashy now is because young players are the studs in the league now rather than 30 years olds. They are younger, faster, and yes, more in your face than the superstars of old.

There just seems to be quite a prevalent contrarian view when it comes to hockey. People want hockey to "catch up" and to get on their same level. So they bash this celebration, but wants fighting banned? or they love the Brodeur rule, or the instigator rule.

Basically it seems these people who want hockey to "evolve" also want hockey to "devolve" when it comes to celebrations.

people need to pick a consistent stance and go with it.

@StanleyCup1907: People running away from you when you attempt to communicate with them and then making up their response doesn't constitute a valid poll. Btw, nothing that you've said even remotely sounds like it's based on reality. I've seen better analyses from a 14 year old hockey fan. Stop trying to insult a lady like rachel216. No wonder you're bitter and lonely. Oh, and for the record, it hasn't been asked of Green that regardless of his lack of participation what he thinks about the scrutiny his teammate is getting from what he did. I'd wager that he'd still support Ovi and remind people it's just 5 seconds of the game and that Ovi will be Ovi. Let out all the bitterness, SC1907. It'll be good for you.
