Mike Green not on the ice for Capitals' practice

By Katie Carrera

Mike Green is not out on the ice for Caps practice at KCI this morning after being struck in the right side of the head by a Brooks Orpik slap shot in the first period of Washington's 3-0 win over Pittsburgh. I'll have an update on his status when the team is off the ice.

Everyone else is on the ice for the main practice, though, including Alexander Semin (groin) and Tom Poti (lower-body). Eric Fehr (shoulder) skated with strength and conditioning coach Mark Nemish ahead of the group.

Here are the forward lines this morning:
Ovechkin-Backstrom-Chimera
Laich-Perreault-Semin
Hendricks-Johansson-Knuble
Gordon-Steckel-Bradley
Beagle and King are skating as extras

Good to hear Ovie is out there. Thought he might have some stiffness and soreness to combat today.

Not Surprised about Green. He needs to not rush it. Hopefully it is just caution and not symptoms that are keeping him off the ice today.

There is absolutely no way that Beagle should be sitting in the pressbox while Gordon is playing. Beagle/Steckle/Brads would be a better line with more grit, god I hope GMGM parts ways with Gordon after this season.

What do we know about Mike Greens' injury?

Posted by: ekbinion68 | February 7, 2011 11:43 AM | Report abuse

This team is a mess...completely falling apart....(see last weeks posts)

Posted by: SA-Town | February 7, 2011 11:45 AM | Report abuse

Uh oh, looks like this team is finding it's rhythm. :)

Posted by: j3rockstar | February 7, 2011 11:53 AM | Report abuse

Yes, 2 great wins! I'm as happy as anybody. However, keep it in perspective, Pittsburgh was missing they're 2 stars, and 2 wins does not a season make. I hope the Caps keep it up and play the rest of the way with this energy. However, BB seems to be patting himself on the back already. If they continue with this consistency, even with a few losses here and there, that is super! As a Cave Dweller I'm just not ready to name BB Coach of the Year yet.

I mean...With a couple rows of stitches in his ear...a helmet might not feel too good! I don't know how he will be able to play tomorrow...if he gets hit along the boards those stitches will come right out.

Anyone think we should claim Emery today? Danny is out and we might end up needing Holtby for a long stint if one of the youngings gets hurt. He's pretty cheap.

Posted by: capscoach | February 7, 2011 11:58 AM | Report abuse

Don't need another goalie, if one goes down then Holtby can step in nicely and gain experience at the same time. Save the money for a 2C or another tough Dman.

Posted by: PhilR | February 7, 2011 12:02 PM | Report abuse

@capscoach

nope. No need on the goalie. Its not an issue. All we need is a 2C and another Winger possibly. I think the Defense is fine. The only things this team needs is to be able to consistently score. These next two games are critical.

The win vs TB was nice, the win vs Pit(AHL Version) was ok. SJ and LA will provide a good challenge before the road trip.

Posted by: ThePat | February 7, 2011 12:05 PM | Report abuse

@PhilR

but we need another goalie for hershey! Sabourin is out. Emery is cheap and experienced

Posted by: capscoach | February 7, 2011 12:06 PM | Report abuse

Emery to Anaheim supposedly done.

Posted by: kcbrichmond | February 7, 2011 12:06 PM | Report abuse

I don't want Emery for the Caps...I wasnt him for Hershey...with Danny out and the strong possibility of needing Holtby again at some point...doesn't seem like a bad pick up

@kcbrichmond

he has to pass through waivers first...ends tuesday at noon

Posted by: capscoach | February 7, 2011 12:09 PM | Report abuse

Can't pick up a goalie simply to satisfy Hershey. Hershey will need to call up someone from the StingRays if necessary....no need to waste cap space on another goalie.

Posted by: PhilR | February 7, 2011 12:12 PM | Report abuse

Isn't Holtby dinged up at the moment?

Posted by: Steve_R | February 7, 2011 12:14 PM | Report abuse

TSN saying Anaheim deal is signed. Whatever. Also saw some report saying Caps turned down a deal this weekend. No other info...

Posted by: kcbrichmond | February 7, 2011 12:14 PM | Report abuse

When Fehr gets back, some tough decisions are going to be made in terms of scratches. And it rhymes with shadooble.

Posted by: Albright4Snapper | February 7, 2011 12:15 PM | Report abuse

@kcbrichmond

Pens have been on fire without Crosby and Malkin. Dont minimize the win...it was a good win vs a good team.

Posted by: SA-Town | February 7, 2011 12:15 PM | Report abuse

Emery cant go to Hershey if we claim him. If we tried to do that, Anaheim has the right to pick him up. Waivers are strange in the NHL and this is an example of one of the weird types due to his veteran status.

Steve_R,

I know that Sabourin is out but haven't heard anything about Holtby, anyone?

Posted by: PhilR | February 7, 2011 12:15 PM | Report abuse

@PhilR

Holtby has a sore knee and has been out for about a week.

Posted by: ThePat | February 7, 2011 12:18 PM | Report abuse

I bash him all the time...

But I am very proud (not being sarcastic) of Ovechkin for being on the ice for practice. Even after a blocked shot (awkwardly) and Cooke's BS, I figured and he deserved a day off.

Nice Job OVIE!!!

Saw Bears play in AC Friday night, Ford was in goal ......... never seen him before played well ..... not as fast as varly or elmo but he is good so no need for any more goalies :)

ThePat,

Thanks for the update, I had not heard about that....been really busy lately at work so haven't had as much opportunity to follow things.

Anyone else hear about a trade being turned down this last weekend per kcbrichmond? Guys who have sources hearing anything?

Posted by: PhilR | February 7, 2011 12:30 PM | Report abuse

@PhilR

on the trade, it was a hockeybuzz rumor. Only place I saw it. Havent heard anything from my buddy about us seriously talking to a team in 3 weeks or whatever its been.

At this point I dont see a move happening until we return from the road trip. They dont play for 4 days after that. That is when I expect something to happen.

Posted by: ThePat | February 7, 2011 12:39 PM | Report abuse

@anyone -Why does Emery have to go through waivers and Forsberg doesn't?

I'm a little confused by this one.

Posted by: jwash4472 | February 7, 2011 12:52 PM | Report abuse

jwash4472,

I'm pretty sure it has to do with the length of time that Foppa has been out of the league whereas Emery played last season.

Posted by: PhilR | February 7, 2011 12:56 PM | Report abuse

@Jwash

Emery is on waivers bc he is being sent to Ducks AHL team to get in game shape.

Forsberg is just starting with the Avs from the get go.

Posted by: ThePat | February 7, 2011 12:57 PM | Report abuse

ThePat,

Thanks for the update.....Hockeybuzz and Ecklunf are never right so it has got to be a non issue.

Howdy... been reading CI for a long time but haven't posted before. Figured I'd try it out. I'm just wondering if anybody else is on thinking along the same lines as me. I think MJ90 should be centering the 2nd line of Semin & Laich. Is there any reason MP is consistently in there?

In my opinion, it's pretty obvious MJ90 is going to be a really good 2C sooner rather than later. I'd like to see MP traded because I don't think he's ever going to be a high-minute NHL-caliber player but he does have some value right now.

Thoughts anyone??

@jwash

other players have had to go on waivers bc they played overseas this season. If a player hadn't played overseas then no need for waivers.

MP has chemistry with Semin and Laich. He and Laich have been playing well together in the past few games. They scored very simlar goals in the last 2 games, with MP fishing out the puck and dishing toward the crease and Brooksie finishing it off.

If MoJo keeps clicking with Fehr (when/if he comes back) and Knuble, we may have #2 LIne A and B.

With that said, a true 2C and a tough scoring winger to provide leadership would be nice.

Posted by: jmurray019 | February 7, 2011 1:09 PM | Report abuse

I posted last night that ML, MP and Steckel together are on a pace for 51 points this year COMBINED.

Your #2C should get you at least 50 pts by himself.

10-1 Mike Green's face today will look like one of Chris Brown's girlfriends.

Snoopy better not get scratched. WTF. aroooo aroooo aroooo (sound of a beagle barking)

Nice to see WTF_E_fehr skating...granted he probably is still out a bit. Wonder if he gets a conditioning stint before he comes back.

Yay Semin skating...hope he plays against San Josie.

I liked seeing Ovie get up and sock Cooke twice. He got in 2 nice shots. Just walked up and BAM BAM. Good stuff.

As for Shultz and his standing around. He gave a whack, but lets face it, he's Ferdinand. He likes roses.

Posted by: SeminAllOverTheIce | February 7, 2011 1:17 PM | Report abuse

MJ90 is still young and gaining experience. It is probably a good thing that he is not thrust into the 2C too quickly. Occasionally is fine right now. A good veteran 2C would be good on the way to the playoffs. If that happens, I expect that Pocket Ovi may be the casualty and headed back to the Bears.

I know people like to knock Schulz for not hitting enough, and that criticism is fair, but did people see what Schulz did after Green got hit in the head with the puck?

Kunitz had a wide open chance for a goal, and Schulz knocked Kunitz on his a** to prevent the scoring chance. Very nice hit to prevent a scoring chance. Good job Schulzie.

If you did not see it, I suggest taking a look at the replay.

Cody Eakin continues to dominate the WHL with his quickness. On Saturday night he took the opening faceoff of the 2nd period and according to reports broke through the defense to create a shorthanded breakaway and scored with a wrist shot through the goalie's legs.

The goal came just 7-seconds at the beginning of the period which is a new Kootenay Ice franchise record.

1a) Get Green a legit top end D partner. Schnutz and Potty can battle for a spot on the 3rd pairing.

UPGRADE-Green
Alzner-Carlson
Erskine-Hannan/Poti/Schultz

1b) Don't know what is out there as far as 2Cs but would like to see us grab a legit one, ideally a vet with playoff experience. 90 looks good but this is his first season playing NA hockey. He's done better than most probably expected but if he's on the playoff roster, I prefer it to be as a 3C at this point. Not sure whether he'll end up being a 2C or 3C down the line but I just don't feel comfortable with the kid as the 2C after a long first NHL season. He could hit the wall at the wrong time.

2) Any other minor moves to add a little more experience and grit to the 3rd and 4th lines. Player must have high innate compete level. No wusses allowed.

Despite his faceoff prowess, Steckel should be made available as part of an outgoing package if another team wants his skill set... or should I say, his one skill.

If anybody has interest in Schultz, move him before people see further through his league-leading plus/minus from last season. Big, slow and super soft is a bad combo no matter how good he does this or that. Trade him before his value plummets further.

Chimera, Poti, Perrault, King (since we aren't using him), B. Gordon, picks, and 1 or 2 better prospects should also be made available depending on the player coming in.

The trade the Caps turned down was reportedly with Ottawa. Phillips, Fisher and Spezza heading to D.C with a combination of Semin, either Varly or Neuvirth, 1st rounder next year and top prospect ( possibly Wey) going the other way. Not sure how the Caps could fit into their salary cap.

Posted by: barnstorfm | February 7, 2011 1:53 PM | Report abuse

Phillips is a FA after the season and not a major upgrade. I think Spezza would be a great 2nd line center but wouldn't trade Varly or Neuvirth in any trade for him. Fisher should come cheaper considering his age, big contract and less ability than Spezza. If the Sens are looking to shed salary, draft picks and one of our less talented 3rd or 4th line centrs such as Gordon or Steckel should do it.

Given the Caps scoring and PP woes, I can't see them trading Semin when he could be the solutions after his contract extension. People may be down him, but he played hurt the entire month of December and early-January, before he went on IR. I'd like to see how he does playing healthy with a legit 2nd line center.
