Milan Jurcina returns to Washington

I hope Milan Jurcina didn't sell his place in Arlington (and that fans didn't get rid of their red, white and blue No. 23 jerseys).

After being dealt to Columbus in December, the hulking defenseman, who is currently injured, is on his way back. I was told last night that he was a possible backup plan in case deals for other, higher profile blueliners did not pan out. The Capitals sent a conditional 2010 draft pick.

Jurcina is out 4-6 weeks with a sports hernia, meaning he might not be ready to play until the playoffs. He will also be an unrestricted free agent in July.

Guess no big deals then

that's it no more trades. Not bad, figure Juice was the back up plan

Posted by: Capsnskins1 | March 3, 2010 2:57 PM | Report abuse

WHAT? this does not make any sense...

Posted by: tcdahlin11 | March 3, 2010 2:57 PM | Report abuse

This is ridiculous?

Posted by: hokiedee | March 3, 2010 2:57 PM | Report abuse

Great pick up, a hugh 6-4 D-man.. He is an upgrade over what we have and is well liked in the locker room.. He will hit, and is underrated at a plus 2 on the season.. The only reason we traded him in first place was b/c he is a UFA and will demand a large pay raise!!

There's a 'chemistry guy' ... interesting yet 'safe' move

Posted by: SavedByZero | March 3, 2010 2:57 PM | Report abuse

Low-risk, high-reward moves that don't threaten chemistry.

Posted by: stwasm | March 3, 2010 2:57 PM | Report abuse

I'm waiting for the other shoe to drop - this is quite odd. The Caps have to be over some sort of roster maximum with these vet moves...

NOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO!

Posted by: gebster | March 3, 2010 2:58 PM | Report abuse

Welcome back Juice.

Posted by: ludeman95 | March 3, 2010 2:58 PM | Report abuse

Sometimes no deal is the best deal. Or at least no big deal. Still wonder who these guys replace on the roster. And I thought we had all that cap space since what's his name went away.

Posted by: rjma1 | March 3, 2010 2:59 PM | Report abuse

Juice was the backup plan? I would've thought Alzner or Carlson or even Sloan were the "backup plan" if anyone got injured. I guess we'll have to get used to seeing Crysby and others parked in front of the crease and nobody clearing them out in the playoffs.

Posted by: visionof75 | March 3, 2010 2:59 PM | Report abuse

For a 6th Round pick. The good news is that we haven't given anybody up...so far.

Posted by: RockyDog1 | March 3, 2010 2:59 PM | Report abuse

nooooo

Posted by: MNMNT | March 3, 2010 2:59 PM | Report abuse

WTF???

Posted by: JD09 | March 3, 2010 2:59 PM | Report abuse

Two years ago we got Cooke, Huet and Feds for two #2s (one being Ruth) and Sutherby.

Walker, Belanger and Jurcina aren't up to that, although I'm happy with Belanger.

Posted by: tominfl1 | March 3, 2010 2:59 PM | Report abuse

Good! Glad to see him back.

Posted by: Two4Roughing | March 3, 2010 2:59 PM | Report abuse

Welcome back, Juice.
Did we miss you?

Posted by: hockeyweasel | March 3, 2010 3:00 PM | Report abuse

Considering right after this they announced Hamhuis wouldn't be moved, I'll bet Washington was working on something for him and it fell through.

Posted by: nhcaps | March 3, 2010 3:00 PM | Report abuse

Didn't think we should have traded him in the first place but this is weird.

Posted by: butcherbaker | March 3, 2010 3:00 PM | Report abuse

Chris Clark and a 6th for Chimera...sounds a like a good trade to me.

Posted by: RichC3 | March 3, 2010 3:00 PM | Report abuse

Epic Fail GMGM. You must play great D in the playoffs and the Caps don't have that. So who sits now that we have added Walker, Belanger & Jurcina??? GMGM never takes the big risk. My guess is another playoff exit. Heck, if it weren't for Varly we would have lost to the Rangers. And he can't stay healthy.

This team need help on the blueline and the whole world knows it yet we do nothing. Horrible.

Posted by: JDR1970 | March 3, 2010 3:00 PM | Report abuse

There were 12 trades announced AFTER the deadline last year so it might not be over yet.

We can’t have all these guys on our roster.

Posted by: pkendrick | March 3, 2010 3:00 PM | Report abuse

well, that's a little disappointing.

We're riding on your back Theo.

Posted by: large23220 | March 3, 2010 3:00 PM | Report abuse

Well Juice is better than Sloan and Erskine. But I hope this doesn't prevent Alzner from playing. I'm afraid that this will mean Alzner and Carlson will be in Hershey the rest of the year.

Like I said, I liked Juice and thought he played pretty well in the playoffs last year. I hope he can step it up again and even more now that he got a new lease on life.

I'm a little disappointed at the same time. I really thought we were going to land that Dman to put us over the hump so to say. I tell ya what, when GMGM says he's stickin to a plan, by God he's stickin to a plan!

Posted by: pkendrick | March 3, 2010 3:02 PM | Report abuse

Jurcina was traded for TBA, which pretty much means a pick. I won't object - adds depth to the defense, he knows the system, has an awesome (if inaccurate) shot... not the best grab, but not horrible.

Maybe they got him back to play with Alzner!!!!! those 2 worked quite well together. Just food for thought

Posted by: TheTruth23 | March 3, 2010 3:02 PM | Report abuse

Great deadline day. We filled the more obvious void in our PK/center needs. Didn't do much to address the other problem, but it's not as big a deal as people make it out to be.

Can't wait to see Belanger in a Caps uni.

To everyone who's complaining about not improving on defense - we actually did. Belanger is a defensive center, which means he can match up with players like Crosby. The Caps problem defensively is more with the forwards than the defensemen. Belanger can give the support that the defensemen need against other teams top lines.

Posted by: timmyv38 | March 3, 2010 3:06 PM | Report abuse

I thought Juice played very well in the Olympics. I am excited to see this team. I didnt think we need a great change. You see San Jose, Detroit, Chicago,Vancouver making really big trades?

Don't agree with bringing him back at all we have better players in Hershey.

Posted by: Hokies4Caps20 | March 3, 2010 3:06 PM | Report abuse

Supposedly the Caps got a trade in at the end. Maybe for Corvo.

Also, the pick for Jurcina was a conditional 6th round pick. Maybe that is conditional that he plays a few games (meaning he overcomes the sports hernia), if not they may have given nothing. It isn't much of a risk, and too much depth in the playoffs is never a bad thing.

Posted by: sgm3 | March 3, 2010 3:06 PM | Report abuse

Frankly, Pothier was also not an issue, he was playing way better than Poti.

no problem with Juice coming back either. We needed him v the rangers last yr, he and ShaMo were beasts against the Rags

But no kaberle and no corvo, they don't provide the element we need defensively at all.

Posted by: icehammer97 | March 3, 2010 3:11 PM | Report abuse

McPhee's an idiot. Plain and simple. If I had to pick one player who should not be coming this way it would be Joe Freaking Corvo.

He's a finesse puck moving dman who can be forced into mistakes. His biggest flaw is his play in front of the net, along the boards etc. He's not strong defensively and can be taken advantage of. Is that really what we needed? and to give up Osala? stupid

Pothier is better defensively than Corvo, period

Posted by: cstanton1 | March 3, 2010 3:12 PM | Report abuse

Why didn't he use that 2nd round pick on Sutton if he was willing to give it up?

Posted by: Hokies4Caps20

We tried but the Isles thought that the Ottawa 2nd rounder would be lower then our 2nd rounder.

Posted by: pkendrick | March 3, 2010 3:12 PM | Report abuse

GMGM didn't make any huge moves, but he made 3 solid pick for player moves. I don't know how Corvo is going to fit in place of Pothier, but we'll have to see. Losing Osala... I don't see it as a big deal.

Posted by: timmyv38 | March 3, 2010 3:12 PM | Report abuse

lets face it, McPhee is in love with puck moving dmen. He loves em

The only way a Corvo trade makes sense is if he replaced Poti and we got another defenseman who was strong defensively via trading some of our excess forwards.

Posted by: cstanton1 | March 3, 2010 3:13 PM | Report abuse

George McPhee...you've done it again. I think that the team will continue their great chemistry with Jurcina back in the locker room. I, for one, am one happy fan.

Posted by: albarelli | March 3, 2010 3:14 PM | Report abuse

Corvo is better than Pothier. I think we are better today than we were.

Posted by: timmyv38 | March 3, 2010 3:15 PM | Report abuse

btw, for those who don't think losing Osala was a big deal, do you realize he was the ONLY power forward prospect we have in the entire organization ? Name me one other player in our org with size, strength and the potential to play on a 2nd line one day.

We're not stacked with power forward prospects in the minors at all. Osala was the only one. Most teams have 4 to 5 guys like that.

Hate to tell you but a GM can do a great job in building a team but a horrible job in finishing it off. Just because he built this team doesn't mean you don't ever criticize the guy. This team needed to get better on D and they didn't do it plain and simple. It's the truth.

Posted by: JDR1970 | March 3, 2010 3:16 PM | Report abuse

GMGM didn't let me down after all. I think we are more set now then before today! Good job GM!

Posted by: capsfan05 | March 3, 2010 3:18 PM | Report abuse

Corvo btw, 2nd last on the Canes teams in hits per game.He doesn't like to hit, he stays away from contact and he doesn't force other forwards to compete hard. He's just a finesse defenseman. Lets hope he decides to show a little more guts when trying to impress his new teammates.

To give McPhee a pass on what he did to improve our defensive corps though..sorry. He failed. Juice was an ok pickup. Corvo for Pothier adds nothing defensively. And losing Osala does suck.

going into the playoffs with Corvo and Poti on defense along with Green who has his lapses, I mean I'm sorry - that doesn't look like a Cup defense to me. Add in Schultz who has never played a single playoff game. Erskine who seems to be on the bubble. Sloan who sucks.

I mean, how does McPhee look at that roster and think its good enough to take the Cup ?

Not to mention that Corvo won a cup in Carolina, was a + every year he played in the NHL until last year (-1) and this year (-6). BUt plus minus is affected by the how your team plays as well. NOt many double digit plus players on a crappy team. Just look at Ovechkins +/- before they hired Gabby.
Corvo and Pothier make about the same $ so he comes off the books in July. He's an experienced D man, blocks shots and won a Cup. And you people are complaining?

Last but not least...
If Osala is so good, why did he not get a call up this year? We recalled Giroux and Andrew Gordon. Didn't we recal Boyd Kane once too? Bourque as well maybe? Osala not once. Just one time last year. Seems to me that if he was the man he would have come up this year at least once.
Come on! We are better than we were when you woke up today! And it cost us a soon to be Free agent a couple of picks and a prospect. At least we didn't trade Carlson, Alzner, Neuvirth or Johansson! Those are the stud prospects. I'll stop before the aneurysm fires up

Ok, I've had enough. I've listened to too many morons and remained quiet. The bottom line is this. George ( Really Ted's ) entire CON is to have outstanding records during the regular season. Then, wish for a miracle come playoff time. McPhee knows darned well this team ( Especially it's defense ) is NOT CONSTRUCTED to win Lord Stanley's Cup. How many times does he have to say it before you clowns actually HEAR him? "We're in this for the LONG haul. That's precisely why he's unwilling to give up ANYONE with real value; be it Varly, Alzner, Carlson, Flash, etc. He and Ted are astute enough to know that as long as they keep having 100 point regular seasons, you fools will keep shelling out $ 7.00 for a beer.
And, I'm so tired of hearing you numbskulls praising mcpee for building a "Great" team, I'm ready to explode. THE CAPS ARE NOWHERE NEAR BEING A GREAT TEAM. Ov and Backastrom literally FELL into their laps. There was certainly no genius involved in drafting either one of them. And, Green? PLEASE!! Tell Sidney Crosby Green's a great defenseman. Or Poti. Or Schultz. Or any of them, for that matter. George has a bunch of mostly THIRD LINE D men masquerading as guys capable of bringing you the Cup. And, you're so gullible you continue believing this malarkey YEAR, AFTER YEAR, AFTER. You're pathetic.

@ puckguru:

Are you 12 yet?

Just because you enjoy wallowing in negativity doesn't mean the rest of us do.

Somehow I think that anything GMGM did would still have you prancing around and laughing your demented laugh as you make your dire predictions of endless misery for the Caps and their fans...

This campaign ain't over yet. Not by a long shot.

STFU and go back to the Pensblog.

Corvo is an upgrade over Potsy. Blocks as many shots, moves the puck, and has playoff experience. Good deal.

guys... lets stop and think in realistic and common sense terms for a second... this is particularly aimed at you puckguru. The capitals were one win away from knocking out the eventual stanley cup champions and moving onto the third round. they are in first place in the whole league this year without varlamov and frankly, we all know they have much in the tank for the playoffs than they are even using in the regular season (see: defensive lapses). They just added a bunch of solid players for relatively cheap. granted a few second round picks were lost but where and when would these picks honestly go into the lineup? we have enough young talent as is and not too many spots left to fill. i would say things are looking quite positive for the caps. lets just hope they can beat the pens

@ Rhino 40
Same pathetic moron you've always been, I see.

Puckguru used the word malarkey. He's gotta' be at least 80 and feels like he didn't leave enough of a mark on the world (for the last time, your brown stains in your underpants don't count), that he's got to criticize every move McPhee makes. Sounds like a bitter old drag queen. Grow up, Puckguru, you're dismissed.
