Milbury Apologies to Leonsis

I was covering yesterday's game, so I didn't see the NBC broadcast. But apparently Mike Milbury made some controversial comments.

From majority owner Ted Leonsis's blog, Ted's Take:

Evidently, Mike called the team the Washington "Crapitals" twice in his broadcast. This has upset our fans, our blogging community, our employees and team officials.

I covered Milbury when he was GM of the Islanders, and he's always been sharp in his criticism. This time, though, Leonsis clearly felt Mike crossed the line. Also, according to Leonsis, Milbury called him and apologized.

Read Ted's entire blog post here.

Yep I watched from home and did he make comments...the other one that was very wrong was how Emerick said how many flyers fans were in the arena...said 50/50...not sure what they saw, but talking with people said there were maybe a couple of hundred..

Posted by: Anonymous | April 14, 2008 11:12 AM | Report abuse

Maybe a "Milbury Sucks" chant next Sat?

Im sure NBC would love that...

Posted by: Anonymous | April 14, 2008 11:14 AM | Report abuse

Now that would be really, really funny.

Posted by: Hook | April 14, 2008 11:16 AM | Report abuse

Actually it was that idiot McGuire who said half the fans were Flyers fans. Even Emrick couldn't swallow that.

The worst commentary I've ever seen on national TV.

Posted by: Zucchina | April 14, 2008 11:17 AM | Report abuse

i would have heard those comments....if i didn't have the tv muted due to the tremendously biased call.

Posted by: matt | April 14, 2008 11:17 AM | Report abuse

This isn't the first time Milbury has put down the Caps or discounted their abilities. During the last "game of the week" he strongly declared that the Caps didn't have the ability to make the playoffs as a 3rd seed or an 8th seed. He also said that Ovechkin could not hold onto the points total because he would crack under pressure and Malkin would end up winning that race. Now these comments on top of those. You know, he does a lot of talking for a former GM/Coach who never had any success in both positions and wound up getting fired more times then he can count. If I were Milbury I would keep my mouth shut, answer Pierre's questions and leave it at that. In fact, I wouldn't mind seeing Milbury left off the broadcast and letting Pierre handle it himself. Pierre might be brash and rude at times, but the guy knows the game and calls it like it is for both teams.

Posted by: Mitch | April 14, 2008 11:18 AM | Report abuse

Actually when Milbury was with the Islanders they would constantly break out with a "Mike must go!" chant.

Posted by: SA-Town | April 14, 2008 11:19 AM | Report abuse

Milbury has always been an idiot. Plain and simple. But you know who's even dumber? PIERRE MCGUIRE. What the hell is McGuire doing talking to the players while they're on the ice? He's chatting up Richards while he's getting a water bottle and laughing it up with them. He is not A PLAYER. He pisses me off. He needs to shut up and someone in the NHL needs to tell him not to interact with the players on the ice, or on the bench for that matter. The guy is a tool and what he did was totally unprofessional.

Posted by: oo7 | April 14, 2008 11:19 AM | Report abuse

With the way the Caps played yesterday that was a fitting way to describe them really.

Maybe if they had shown some passion in their game the talking heads would ever slip up and say something like that.

Posted by: KillerT | April 14, 2008 11:20 AM | Report abuse

I heard him say it once and I thought- "did he just say crapitals?". Was it accidental? , but seriously NBC - is this the best you've got for announcers?! Granted our play was pretty crappy, but announcers are supossed to remain impartial on a major broadcast networks, this isnt joe & craig reporting for the hometown network.

At least he apologized, and I am not sure where they saw 50% flyer fans. I personally could care less what they say - they are my team regardless what Milbury says.

Posted by: Grape8 | April 14, 2008 11:21 AM | Report abuse

Actually the Caps had a higher winning percentage against playoff teams than non-playoff teams during the regular season.

Do a little research there Sparky.

Posted by: Bobo | April 14, 2008 11:22 AM | Report abuse

Glad Ted called him out. This is the kind of thing that should get a guy removed of his duties on the air (yeah, FIRED!). However, since news guys like are allowed to be completely biased, why should these hockey guys? LOL.

Posted by: JC | April 14, 2008 11:23 AM | Report abuse

NBC could not have been more biased in their callings. The entire game I had to listen to two announcers hail the Flyers like Gods. Even when the Caps did something (sadly, not very often) good they would ignore it and talk about how good the Flyers defense was. The entire game was one-sided, and it was horrid. Made me miss Craig and Joe like crazy! I'd rather them, even if the Caps do get national coverage for Game of the Week.

Posted by: KK | April 14, 2008 11:24 AM | Report abuse

Eddie O came back at MacGuire and busted him on the HALF Flyer fan comment. Other than PM, I thought Eddie O and Doc Emmerick did a fair job.

Is there really no practice today? What's going to distract me from this 5-page paper I have to write? Laaame.

Posted by: honed | April 14, 2008 11:26 AM | Report abuse

I was baffled by the 50/50 Caps/Flyers fans comments. Even when the genius who said it was trying to defend it, the cameras were panning over an ocean of red. I had to work hard just to spot Flyers jerseys in the crowd.

Posted by: HolyOlie | April 14, 2008 11:27 AM | Report abuse

1) How can anyone take Milbury seriously? A guy with a record as a coach/GM that includes trades such as:
a)Jokkinen/Luongo for Parrish/Kvasha
b) McCabe/Bertuzzi for Linden
c) Chara/Spezza for Yashin
2) The guy was in charge for a decade and won ZERO playoff series. If he wants to see CRAP, he should start with a peek into a mirror! NBC should fire him immediately.

Posted by: Fauxrumors | April 14, 2008 11:28 AM | Report abuse

I muted the sound after the Crapitals remark. Utterly classless and unprofessional. Even when Huet made a save, the call wasn't "Huet makes the save!" It was "The shot goes off Huet!" Everyone on that team sucked and was a biased dick.

Posted by: Jordan | April 14, 2008 11:31 AM | Report abuse

I heard the comments live and honestly didn't think anything of it. The first mention was just a slip of the tongue and then he followed with something like they are playing like the Crapitals right now.

As to the biased call. It was a one-sided shutout . . . how much were they honestly expected to heap praise on the Caps??

Hopefully the Caps come ready to play in Game 3. I think they will.

Posted by: capsbob | April 14, 2008 11:32 AM | Report abuse

I heard the "crapitals" comment and wasn't sure that was what he said until he made a big deal out of how he just said it. Milbury is an idiot anyway. His "expert" opinions are so full holes and ignorance, it's obvious that he is just a big blowhard who opens his mouth before he has any facts. I hate the NBC coverage. Eddie O is probably the only one who is halfway decent.

I hope the Caps put forth a better effort on Tuesday. There were just way too many bad passes, giveways, and forced attempts up the middle. They looked nervous and out of sorts, like they never played together before.

but seriously congrats to marty

Posted by: Anthony | April 14, 2008 11:37 AM | Report abuse

As bad as the Caps played yesterday I can understand him slipping up and calling them the Crapitals. I hate NBC's biased coverage too and I think Milbury is a complete idiot but he shouldn't be crucified for this particular infraction IMO

Posted by: bonzaifan | April 14, 2008 11:39 AM | Report abuse

PIERRE also predicted a " BLOODSHED".

Stop saying NBC sucks!! They have great shows like America's got talent and The biggest loser. They're an awesome network!!!!!

Posted by: wanggo | April 14, 2008 11:42 AM | Report abuse

I think we all agree that the NBC broadcast crews suck. But it isn't surprising... Doc Emerick is the voice of the Devils television broadcasts so the mere fact that he sees the Flyers play at least 8 times a year makes him biased. And in general, the talking heads are all Atlantic Division apologists.

As for Milbury, I could really care less what that idiot has to say. I think at the end of the 2nd period he called Ovechkin "an imature 22 year old" or something like that

As far as I'm concerned, if Milbury was that knowledgeable, he would still be coaching or a GM. The same goes for Eddie Olczyk. They are all a bunch of washed up losers who know little about the NHL as a whole.

I will mute my TV on Tuesday nite. GO CAPS!

Posted by: Zack | April 14, 2008 11:42 AM | Report abuse

I was at the game last night and it wasnt even close to 50/50 in terms of fans. There were a couple of sections that had a fair amount of flyer fans but the majority were Caps fans. I would say probably closer to like 80/20 at most.

Posted by: Luis | April 14, 2008 11:43 AM | Report abuse

What do you expect from these guys on NBC or Versus? When the Caps are leading, they're the best team since the '83 Oilers. When the Flyers are leading, it's the same thing. Everyone should be familiar with Chris Collinsworth-type national sports coverage by now. Besides, the Caps haven't done well on many NBC games this season. That's why I hated to see that the series was going national. I'll take Joe B and Craig (or even Smokin Al and Craig) over these bandwagon jumpers any day. They offer no insight to the game, only hindsight. Any idiot can do that. I even went to the length of running Caps Radio through my PC and muted the NBC morons but I couldn't live with the 15 second delay.

Posted by: DeadKings08 | April 14, 2008 11:44 AM | Report abuse

Milbury isn't hot enough to get away with that.

Posted by: Anonymous | April 14, 2008 11:48 AM | Report abuse

Uh, 50/50 fans? Huh?? There were a few Flyers jerseys, maybe a couple in each section. Don't know where that came from.

Unreal! NBC should suspend Milbury from Game 5 next Saturday. Turning the team name into a deragotory comment is juvenile and totally unprofessional.
I can't stand the "Nothing But Crosby" Network.

Posted by: Huntvetchkin | April 14, 2008 11:52 AM | Report abuse

maybe last year McGuire got "Kabonged" on the "old coconotta" a little harder than we all thought.

Posted by: Anonymous | April 14, 2008 11:54 AM | Report abuse

I miss ESPN - Bucci and Chix Parm in the studio - Gary Thorne calling the play - no body better. Dinglebury and especially Pierre McGuire are absolutely horrendous. Simply amatuerish and unprofessional...even Brett Hull mumbling mono-syllabic words was better than those two morons.

Posted by: Hew | April 14, 2008 11:58 AM | Report abuse

In response to McGuirre's idiotic comment about Half Flyers Fans, I had to watch Friday Nights game on Comcast with the Philly Feed. If anyone would say dumb things like that it would be Jim Jackson and Steve Coates. And you know what, JJ said during the broadcast that there were "a couple Flyers Jersey's, but not a lot." If they didn't exaggerate, than I didn't think anyone would. Until yesterday. That McGuirre is so over the top, that he really sounds like a know nothing idiot. And when Cheap shot artist Hartnell crashed on Huet and tried to pry off his mask, did any one else hear idiot Olczyk say "That looked like incidental contact to me." How the hell can these 2 keep their jobs. What a joke.

Yea I thought that 20% was being very generous too but where I sitting there was a section of about 20 flyer fans so I didnt know if there were anymore sections like that around the stadium so I inflated their # a little bit to account for what I may not have seen.

Posted by: Luis | April 14, 2008 12:16 PM | Report abuse

That's why I muted the voices. While I couldn't hear the dings and hits, I also couldn't hear the ignorance and stupidity that flowed from the crew. Happily, I also didn't hear the commercials. Added benefit.

Funny, Lindsay Czarniak makes the same slip a few weeks ago and she gets a pass because she's purportedly attractive.

More than being biased, it's poor performance. The league deserves better. The sport deserves better. Let's get some professionals in there. Jeez.

@ John in Mpls - Saying it one time and apologizing/correcting oneself on-air is a "slip."

Saying it twice and only apologizing in a call to the owner after the fact is purposeful douchebaggery.

And I personally don't find either of them attractive.

Posted by: Jill | April 14, 2008 12:43 PM | Report abuse

As bad as the coverage of the Caps game was, if you were like me and stuck around for the gymnastics coverage following the game (oh, heck, I'm probably the only person in the country that watched both!), it seemed positively quality compared to the stuff the gymnastics commentary team said. They're not known as the "Terrible trio" for nothing. This one-sided blantant favoritism for a team (or individual) runs through the entire NBC Sports structure. Obviously, the leadership must support it.

Posted by: Birdie | April 14, 2008 12:45 PM | Report abuse

Had this been on Center Ice from the Flyers broadcast, or even from the Caps own broadcast, I would have brushed it off.

However, no matter how poorly we were playing, to do that on a national broadcast is disrespectful to the entire league and NBC. That's not good for the game and it's not going to boost NBC's ratings either. When you mock your product it makes it difficult to sell.

The whole broadcast was quite ridiculous. I'm tired of the one-sided love that teams get - sometimes it's us and Ovechkin, sometimes it's Cindy & Malkin, and yesterday it was Philly. Just call the friggin game....

If Alex is a "an immature 22 year old" it's apparent that Milbury has never met this young man. I doubt he would have the stones to say that to his face. God Help him if I see him at VC for game 5. If I do Milbury will be in the same condition as Mr. Thoresen after game 1. (not a threat, but a promise)

Milbury should apologize ON AIR game 5. That's if he still has a job. I'm sure they could find a Washed up former GM/Coach Windbag that could be a little more Professional.

As for the 50/50 fans comment. I was in a section with exactly 100 seats and only 4 Flyers Fans. Do the math you idiot! If you are to stupid to figure it out with simple math then OPEN YOUR EYES!

Also, I was at the game, and the amount of flyers fans was pathetic, not even close to 50/50 or even 80/20. There was one cluster of about 20 of them in the 400s, and every other section had maybe a few pairs. I'd be angrier about that comment but it's so ridiculous that it's funny.

I do not understand what happens to Pierre Maguire when he does NBC games; as a game analyst on TSN he does solid work and works well with the play-by-play guys, and then on NBC it's like he's a different person completely.

Milbury is like the drunk at your local bar who won't shut up about the earth being flat. Five words- Alexei Yashin, ten-year contract. Done.
