More on Milan Jurcina's return to the Caps

Where ya been, Juice? (Jonathan Newton/The Washington Post)
The Caps are on again with defenseman Milan Jurcina after making a deal with Columbus for a sixth-round draft pick.
*"Having reacquired Juice, I'm hoping the Caps are now attempting to get back that 7th rounder they just traded. I miss it already." (@dcsportsbog)
*"Jurcina was Alzner's partner when Alzner was playing his best up in DC. Could we see Karl back up for the playoff run?" (@mgiannotto)
*"Interesting aspect of Jurcina deal -- he was just diagnosed with a sports hernia." (@TSNBobMcKenzie)
*"We've been saying that the Caps needed a big, veteran presence on their blue line. We just figured it'd be one that didn't already have a jersey waiting for him at Verizon Center." (Puck Daddy)
*A few basics. (TSN)

Corvo? A definite upgrade over Pothier.
Great two-way defenseman. Not the big bruiser everyone wants, but still a good move.
Sad to see Osala go before he ever got his real shot.

mcguire also famously called Schultz big and "nasty." He gets paid to talk; so he talks. But his expertise is sometimes suspect.
Posted by: large23220 | March 3, 2010 3:13 PM | Report abuse
Another high risk, high reward type player in Corvo. Might fit BB's system great... but also will give us heartattacks.
Posted by: visionof75 | March 3, 2010 3:13 PM | Report abuse
I would've liked Hamhuis, Kubina, or even Alberts over Corvo, but he is definetely an upgrade over Pothier.
I'm not so sure if Corvo was worth Osala as a throw in. Then again, Osala seems to not be favored in the Caps system...
Posted by: richmondphil | March 3, 2010 3:14 PM | Report abuse
Is Corvo they guy who got his leg sliced open vs Caps a few months back?
Posted by: tominfl1 | March 3, 2010 3:14 PM | Report abuse
I'd say GMGM has had a pretty decent day. Now, it'll be interesting to see how the team deals with all the forwards.

Posted by: PhilR | March 3, 2010 3:15 PM | Report abuse

Posted by: ablake70 | March 3, 2010 3:15 PM | Report abuse
I wonder if Corvo was done b/c GMGM found out about Juice's hernia after he traded for him. Maybe Columbus didn't know either is my point. I know they have to disclose it before they trade him but if they didn't know either until the last second.....

Posted by: pokerface1208 | March 3, 2010 3:18 PM | Report abuse
If, as they say, upping the PK is primary, then these are pretty good moves. Also add some more grit. I'm okay with it. We gave up nothing to make these moves. There may still be something in the hopper.
Posted by: saintex | March 3, 2010 3:18 PM | Report abuse
So we've got:
Green-Schultz
Corvo-Poti (I would bench Poti but I know Bruce will put him on the second pair)
Jurcina-Morrison
???

Corvo
Jurcina
Erskine
Poti
Sloan -> Alzner
Posted by: guer_j | March 3, 2010 3:20 PM | Report abuse
Considering we traded Pothier for Corvo, how can anything be a downgrade. Otherwise, the roster is exactly the same for the league leading team.
Posted by: saintex | March 3, 2010 3:21 PM | Report abuse
So once again we have 8 D with Alzner and Carlson in Hershey.
If next year isn't their yr then it'll never be. We have a lot of UFA's on D after this yr and if they can't play up here next year they won't.

Do you want Carlson and Alzner in this year ... no, let them get the Calder at top 1-2 pair. Moving Osala also opens up spot in hersey for some of our young guys in Sweden ... who's that center we just drafted?

I can not believe this is it. Someone else has to be on the move. They brought in four roster players and sent back one. Even if sloan and Laing are sent down, someone else has to go.
Posted by: ablake70 | March 3, 2010 3:24 PM | Report abuse
Probable defensive pairs:
Green-Schultz
Poti-Morrisonn
Corvo-Erskine
I think Jurcina will be back for the playoffs, and we have Sloan, Alzner, and Carlson at Hershey. Sounds good to me.
Posted by: timmyv38 | March 3, 2010 3:24 PM | Report abuse
Correct me if I'm wrong but didn't the Caps just acquire some SC winning experience?
Posted by: FloridaCapsFan | March 3, 2010 3:24 PM | Report abuse
Overall, not a bad day for GMGM. He traded a 2nd, 6th, and 7th pick, plus a fading prospect and a decent defenseman for a better defenseman and a pair of physical forwards -- all with expiring contracts. Though I think the Caps would have done fine standing pat (and I'd argue that Keith Aucoin could be the short-term solution for 3rd line center -- but that would take longer to argue than what I can do here), these moves make the Caps better and specifically provide more defensive beef for the playoffs. And as an added bonus, the Caps didn't move any of their more-promising prospects (the goalie triplets, Alzner, Carlson, Perrault, Gordon, Miskovic, or the kids playing in juniors).
Posted by: tfirey | March 3, 2010 3:24 PM | Report abuse
Great deadline day. The only "miss" I see is Seidenberg, and potentially Alberts. Corvo > Sutton.
We addressed the #1 issue in a PK center, and we addressed blue line issues, though maybe not as much as people wanted.

I agree with Alzner and Carlson being in Hershey for the playoffs. It'd be risky for a deep playoff run. I'm just saying with Corvo, Erskine, ShMo and Juice being UFA's after this yr, if Alzner and Carlson don't make the club next yr they probably won't ever make it here.

I find it funny the segment of ppl:
1) who cling desperately to future draft choices of 18 year kids who never turnout to be anything
vs.
2)the ppl who want to trade a top 2 line winger(s) for a 3rd-6th level defenseman
vs.
3) the ppl who want to give up every player on the roster for a blockbuster deal just to say we have a blockbuster
vs.
4) the weirdo that wants to give up on young goaltending for a 3rd-6th level d-man.

These trades make so much sense.
Let's take a look at the following d-lines
Green/Schultz
Poti/Morrisson
Corvo/Jurcina-Erskine
All 3 lines have an offensive defensemen paired up with a stay at home type. Now that strategy goes 3 deep. All the defensive pairings are a threat.
Let's take a look at the offensive lines.
Ovie/Backs/Knuble (nough said)
Semin/Belanger/Laich
Fleischman/Morrison/Chimera
Fehr-Gordon/Steckel/Bradley-Walker
With the compacted end of year and playoff schedule it will pay dividends by giving your energy guys a rotated day off.
Each line has a scoring sniper, a center that can dish and win faceoffs and a grinder in front of the net to scoop up points off of loose pucks.
Backs/Belanger/Morrisson/Steckel should each win a majority of their faceoffs. In addition Belanger gives the caps two centers with a true defensive consciousness.
Awesome!!!
