More on new Capital Eric Belanger
Here's a quick roundup of links for more information about Eric Belanger, who joins the Caps from Minnesota in exchange for a second-round draft pick:
*Above, Eric Belanger talks earlier this season about his career through the NHL and finding a home in Minnesota.
*The basics. (TSN)
*Jason Chimera and Belanger have some history.
*Related: Trading for a second-round pick well worth the gamble. (The Hockey News)
*"Meanwhile, the Washington Capitals traded a second-round pick for Eric Belanger of the Minnesota Wild, which pretty much confirms our theory that the Caps believe they can grind down the forwards on the Penguins and Flyers with their own depth at forward, and not have to worry about adding many significant bodies on the blue line." (Puck Daddy)
*Belanger a second option for defensive zone faceoffs. (NHL.com)
More to come.

No it doesn't. That salary move could be taken care of in the off-season. However, if the Caps moved Flash for Kaberle then that would about cover for it since Flash is expected to make around $3.3-$3.5M next year and Kaberle has a cap hit of $4.5M.
Souray has a cap hit in the fives for at least two more years.
I also think Kaberle is better.

Kaberle would be the wrong move for Washington. He's a good player, but not who the Capitals need. They'd never look at Souray because he's biggest upside is on the powerplay. Washington has no space for him there, and his injury this season make him a really risky choice. Not what they need.

Question for the Capologists. Both Fehr and Flash make under $1 million a year, so their Cap his is low. Walker makes $2.5 mil and I'm sure Belanger is around $2 mil, so wouldn't adding a swapping a player for Fehr or Flash put that team in cap trouble. I ask this because I think the Caps would have to move a player with a higher Cap hit than those two to add another high price player. Like maybe a winger with a $4.6 mil cap hit?

The idea of acquiring someone to flip him later is absurd to me.

per TFP:
"If teams want Kaberle, they'll have to pay up. Leafs asking price 'very high' from what I'm hearing."
Posted by: elicea | March 3, 2010 2:33 PM | Report abuse
ablake: Because the season is 80% over, that cap equation only counts 20% of what it would the whole year. Let's say you had a $1M gut for 80% of the season. You've paid $800K toward his cap. You trade him for a $5M guy whose team has paid $4M so far. You pay the last $1M on the $5M guy and save the last $200K on the guy you traded. Cap hit = $800K in total. So, any team about $2M under, like the Caps are I believe, can afford to take in about $10M in contracts. Belanger + Walker = $4.5M so we can pick up (less offsets) about $5M more.
Posted by: tominfl1 | March 3, 2010 2:34 PM | Report abuse
If Belanger is a shadow, or defensive upgrade, then trade fehr and a 1st for Kaberle.
Let's just try and score 6 per game.
Posted by: barney56 | March 3, 2010 2:35 PM | Report abuse
With Backstrom needing a new contract the Caps are not going to be able to keep other younger forwards who may draw interest in the offseason in free agency.
Fleischmann is a guy the team could lose.
Depending upon the size of the Backstrom deal, which is going to be VERY large, as he is 1A to Ovechkin in Washington, I would not be surprised to see another trade.

Posted by: icehammer97 | March 3, 2010 2:36 PM | Report abuse
@richmondphil
I was saying that because it would be able to work under the cap for next year, not to try to flip Kaberle in the off-season.
When looking at the possible salary structure for next year (tominfl1 did this) Flash was put at either a $3.3M or $3.5M contract. That would be gone and so would a defenseman on the team (probably Erskinse). The Caps then would need to replace Flash, but that could be an affordable prospect who is on the verge of making the team.
So pretty much all I'm saying is that it could work where Kaberle fits into next year's cap if Flash is traded.

cool nicknames are an underrated hockey stat.

If you trade Flash and Erskine, say, for Kaberle, and promote Bouchard to play forward, you are in the red in cap cost roughly $500K-1M.
Depends on Flash if he gets $3M or $3.5M.

I wouldn't mind Flash and Poti for Kaberle. Then, next year, you promote Bouchard and you have $1M or so extra.
Or, you can resign Belanger at what he's making!
Belanger and Kaberle next year for $6M?
Flash and Poti will make $6.5-7.0M.

Yes, but you can get around being in the red by $500K. The Caps could just carry 22 players instead of 23 or move any number of players.
Adding an additional $500K can be dealt with and it leaves many options for how to deal with it.

So, we didn't get Sutton because GM was saving that pick for Belanger.
I was never a fan of Jurcina. Too many bonehead plays at just the wrong time.

Juice for TBA. And I don't think people are giving Jurcina credit - he is a solid, stay-at-home defenseman, just needs to be paired up with the right type of defenseman. He was great in the Olympics, hopefully he'll bring that back with him.

Why are all of you freaking out? Yea GMGM is an idiot who added assets for nothing so far. Juice is here because Im guessing one of the others is going out, either way, WHAT DID WE LOSE? Stop calling out the GM.

Question how many players do they need to move in 1 min?

You guys see the white flag being waived out the window of GMGM's office?
I must admit I'm pretty disappointed. I bet the players are too.

The rosters get expanded at the end of the year, sort of like baseball.
You still can only dress the same amount of people but you can have more on your roster.

Hamhuis is staying in Nashville.
Apparently the Caps were one of the options for the Nashville D-man but no Nashville didn't end up trading him.
GMGM went with Juice as his backup plan.
I'm pretty sure the caps won't be moving anyone else today. No big deals - we'll more than likely hold on to Flash and Fehr.

Fixed the main problem on the PK/center. Still have a problem with immobility/defense, but I think that's not as big a problem as others make it out to be.

I expected a lot more from our GM. But, now he has put a bunch of guys into a situation where this year's playoffs become a tryout for next year's roster. If you want an offer sheet, you'd better play your butt off in May and June.

Upgraded grit (Walker) and center (Belanger). Price was probably too high for other d-men, which explains getting Jurcina. Big question, what happens with all these forwards?
Posted by: kcbrichmond | March 3, 2010 3:04 PM | Report abuse
Overall good day, two solid vets for playoff run, but D-man who knows system (depth showed when he was first traded?) and we are getting healthy in goal.
Not bad overall, why does everyone want to make a major trade just because?

Why? Because this team has needed a stay-at-home, crease-clearing defenseman for about 6 years now. Now we can look forward to another year without one. And, there were several available at reasonable prices. Our GM failed. That's why.

Posted by: BACKS | March 3, 2010 3:08 PM | Report abuse
It's a great move. Jurcina has been steadily improving, big and hits hard, knows the system, wants to be a Cap, costs nothing, solid Olympics and so on. What's the matter with you people ... afraid the team doesn't have what it takes without a dozen or so rentals? BTW, defense is played all over the ice, not just one side of the blue line. The winning streak may have started after the Clark/Jurcina trade but the defense started looking awfully shaky then as well, at least in a good number of those games.

Corvo for Pothier and Osala? Not a bad move IMHO, but we needed toughness on the blueline badly. This is an upgrade however.

I'm not sure how big of an upgrade Corvo is over Pothier, but at the same time, Flash, Fehr, Neuvy, Varly, Holtby, Carlson and Alzner are all still in the system, so I'm ok with it.
