Morning roundup: Thinking less helps Alzner

(Jim McIsaac/Getty Images)

Morning roundup

Karl Alzner has a history of being a little particular. Some might even say quirky, if they've read Dan Steinberg's posts about the Caps defenseman's oddities: tapping his stick on the ice 88 times, left sock before right sock and right shoe before left shoe, asking too many "quick questions," and so on.

But these days, Alzner refuses to allow life's small complications to consume him -- a new outlook he says has made him more focused on hockey:

"My mind is a lot more clear," the 21-year-old said. "I don't think about routine, stuff behind the scenes, being sent down. I just worry about playing hockey and enjoying myself. Because of that, I'm a lot more relaxed on the ice." | Full story »

Tonight's matchup:

Washington Capitals (21-7-6)
Vancouver Canucks (19-15-0)

GM Place, 10 p.m.
TV: Comcast SportsNet
Radio: 820 AM, 1500 AM

*From the Insider yesterday: Semyon Varlamov nears his return, the rookie dinner was "expensive," Alex Ovechkin is popular.

*Ovechkin is so popular, in fact, that the Vancouver Sun dedicated an entire photo gallery to him practicing at GM Place.

*And this story, which starts with an excellent anecdote about Vancouver's Sami Salo, whose son is a big-time Ovie fan:

"He's the best player in the world, according to my son," the senior Salo said. "He talks about Ovechkin. When we play our little hockey games, he always says: 'Ovechkin scores!'"
Probably because Ovechkin nearly always does.
"Maybe when I'm retired I'll buy him an Ovechkin jersey," Sami continued. "He doesn't have to wear mine, but I'm not going to buy him an Ovechkin jersey as long as I'm playing for the Canucks."

*The NHL did not suspend David Kochi for his hit on the Caps' Mike Green. Now that is one lucky dude. (Denver Post)

*Boudreau talks, local guys happy to be home:

*Caps shopping list: Who can they get? (In the Room)

*Weighing in on Bruce Boudreau's rant about David Koci (and this was before the league opted not to suspend him). (TSN)

I had to cheer for the Flyers last night because I wanted to Caps to have a lead over the Pens. Of course the Flyers just gave me more of a reason to hate them because they can't win when I want them to. I did come to a surprising conclusion last night when the game was over. Although I hate the Pens with a passion, I honestly hate the Flyers more. I am surprised by that. My sons felt the same way so we tried to rationalize. We decided it is because although the Pens are annoying they whine more than anything else. The Flyers are just flat out dirty. Crazy crap was getting let go last night. Carcillo is out of control. He left his feet so badly last night to throw a check that one of his skates were on the lip of the Pens bench. Probably on purpose trying to "accidentally" cut someone. He had to be settled down by Laviolet after the crazy hit. The announcers said he was getting "an earfull" from Laviolet. I see a purge by the Flyers, and soon. The talk is Hartnall may be on the move. I friggin' hate that guy so I hope he ends up in the West somewhere.

That is a somewhat old picture of Alzner. That's from back before he changed to #27.

Zetterberg was injured last night. Now that they have lost a center I wonder if they might come a knockin' for Nylander. The Red Wings are running out of options and Nylander racks up points faster than anyone on the Red Wings farm team. Grand Rapids lost their first game with Nylander back in the line-up 4-3 in a shootout. Nylander assisted on all 3 goals.

@pokerface208

You are absolutely right. In my rational moments I know that the two incidents should be viewed separately. I wrote in the heat of the moment. It feels to me as though our guys are getting run at lately by the more goon-like players especially when we are winning but I don't want us to get a goon in return. I like it when we just make them pay by scoring. I'm just relieved that Greenie and Mo are okay.

I can see from the Alzner story that his superstitions dwarf my little routine of which foods to eat when the Caps play. I'm sure lots of the players have these things.

Should be very exciting tonight. If I remember, Caps whipped the Canucks last year in DC.

Posted by: tominfl1 | December 18, 2009 8:06 AM | Report abuse

OK so let me see if I understand the "new" NHL:

Ovie -- a major superstar -- has a knee on knee hit as a result of a hockey play gone bad and he gets 2 games.

Koci -- a major no talent goon -- decks Mike Green from behind with a 10 step margin with an added shoulder to the head in a time when the NHL is "discussing" lowering head shots and he gets a fine.

And they wonder why fewer and fewer people are watching hockey these days.

tominfl...

Watch for Bieska tonight.

Ovechkin believes that Luongo is the best goaltender in the NHL. We have faced Miller, Team USA goaltender and Luongo, Canada's, all within a few games.

Lets hope we are better at finding some open space against Luongo and he isn't possessed either.

Posted by: JSchon | December 18, 2009 8:19 AM | Report abuse

Did anyone else check out the pictures in the Vancouver Sun photo gallery of Ovechkin?

Check out I think the third one. Gordo is lying on the ice, looks like he's trying to stretch out his back and his expression says, "Owwwwwwwwwwwwww."

Meanwhile, Ovechkin also lying on ice, behind Gordo, with this impish little grin. I'd give a buck to know what Ovi said to Gordo while they were both on the ice like that.

Feels like this is a huge game tonight. Vancouver's a great team and the Caps have to pull together to win another one on the road while it seems like half the league wants to take over first place. Also need to watch for any letdown from our complete performance last game. We've got something to prove tonight.

Ovi's due for a good game.

Posted by: Sonyask | December 18, 2009 8:28 AM | Report abuse

JSchon: Yes, that's right, you were promoting Bieska a week or so back as a "acquisition nice to have." The article implied Salo might draw the Ovi assignment. Are they partners?

Bieska has same contract as Poti - this year and next at $3.5M. I can only imagine what you'd like to do about that.

I'm going to have to take a nap so I can stay awake.

@tominfl1 - *spit*turn around*spit*sign off*sign on*! That was last year; this is this year, and the Canucks just got embarrassed by Anaheim.

Seriously hope our guys step it up and take it to Vancouver, hard.

I think the only way this team is going to get any respect at all from the NHL is to play foot-on-the-throat hockey the rest of the season, and never, ever let up, even when it's 15-3 with 20 minutes to go.

Of course, if they do, Boudreau will be accused of running up the score, but nobody can accuse the boys of being lazy. It's damned if you do, damned if you don't.

I'd rather be damned for doing.

Who are you implying doesn't respect the Caps?

You typed the NHL, so you think that the BS non-suspension of Koci was due to a lack of respect?

Posted by: JSchon | December 18, 2009 8:42 AM | Report abuse

IRTR: I agree I would like to see the Caps keep their foot on the gas the full sixty minutes every night and if that means running the score up then so be it (I know this is unrealistic due to fatigue and the what not but that is just my competitive nature).

However, I do think that will lend itself to the opportunity for more incidents like the Koci hit on Green the other night.

For those that remember when Luongo was in Florida he stole games from us. I was happy as heck to see him leave the Conference. He's won several 1-0 games against us.

Posted by: fanohock1 | December 18, 2009 8:56 AM | Report abuse

Fanohock1: Was he in goal last year when they came to Verizon? I was at the game but I can't remember for the life of me who Vancouver had in net. I assume he was. Either way that was a fun game to go to.

Posted by: eorr53 | December 18, 2009 9:00 AM | Report abuse

@JSchon - It's a combination of factors. Some folks are starting to come around. Do you really believe if Koci's victim had been Crosby instead of our Canadian BadBoy that the league wouldn't have suspended him?

The NHL waited to hand down their ruling until they knew Green was OK. Once they did, they could let Koci get away with it with impunity. I saw that hit, and Green was lucky to get up. Even luckier he didn't break his damn NECK.

@eorr53 - Running up the score and making the other team PAY every time they set foot in the penalty box is going to be what does it for us. That is the best protection this team has. Love Erskine, but he's one major concussion away from a scrambling. Love Bradley to pieces, but he bleeds every time you touch him, and he's got a little Brads to worry about now. Our enforcer is our power play.

And it's the best in the league.

Posted by: irockthered | December 18, 2009 9:05 AM | Report abuse

Yeah, that was fun. The Caps chased him from the net after the first. I believe Vancouver only managed 11 shots. When Luongo was a Panther he won a lot of games in which we outshot them badly. Including 1-0 shutouts. Last year was fun, but they made the trip, now our guys have been living in a hotel for the entire week. Plus the Canucks feel they blew the game against the Ducks so they will come out on fire. Although they lost against the Ducks Luongo had a solid game. With the Caps playing as good as they are the opponents always get up for their game against the Caps. Especially the ones that only get one crack at them.

@IRTR

I believe the non-suspension of Koci was a joke, but I don't think scoring a lot of goals or how we play in the 3rd period vs Tampa is going to change how suspensions are going to get handed down.

The hypocrisy is spread out league wide.

Posted by: griz0615 | December 18, 2009 9:53 AM | Report abuse

Semin for Kovalchuk would be the ONLY trade I would support in regards to Semin. Otherwise, I say we keep Semin. With Ovi and Backs (he will be) locked up for 5 or more years here in DC, Semin would stay. He would get a lot of money to stay and he'd be here with friends. He doesn't seem to desire the spotlight and Ovi handles it well. It is a perfect situation for someone like Semin who seems to just want to play the game without distractions.

From the previous thread:

capscoach

I'm ok with BB calling out a player regarding specific actions. I just don't think it was necessary to go into 'he can't play in the AHL, he has 1 goal in 4 years'. That's irrelevant, and comments like that aren't good for the game. Critize the act. Critize the NHL for not suspending him. BB has had guys like Koci in his lineups through the years. The bigger problem is that the caps don't intimidate or deter anyone into not taking runs at their players.

Final thoughts for this morning before I get my act together and start being productive...

1) Keep Semin. I think we would regret losing him, and honestly I don't think he would leave Ovie and Backs. If I were him I wouldn't leave for anything. I personally want to keep him for those times when Ovie is out, he really can step up and take over. He has to work on his consistency but I think overall he proves his value.

2) As far as I'm concerned BB can say whatever he wants. Not only is it hilarious but he's usually spot on. His point was not that this was a clean player who plays a positive role but rather a guy whose job it is the play a goon. I think that is totally relevant bc he wasnt sent out there to score goals, he was sent out to "send a message" ie injure. You can be a tough guy and check hard and still not aim for the head... this guy has a history of crossing that line.

3) People took runs at our stars all last year too. Having brash didnt start it, someone on the other team just got their @ss handed to them by brash, but it didnt deter the original run on our stars. Specifically semin, green and ovie were and always will be targeted, no matter what "enforcer" is present on our team.

Posted by: mrszilla | December 18, 2009 10:29 AM | Report abuse

Not sure why everyone thinks Semin is ready to run to the KHL. The only reason he went back to Russia was due to the lockout, he was here prior to the lockout. Then he had issues with his military service. He got way more by playing the the Russian Super League than he would have in the AHL anyway. He is already playing on an extension he signed after returning to the Caps. The situation in Washington is even better now than it was when he signed his extension so IMO he wouldn't head back to Russia. If for some reason he isn't able to work out something to stay in Washington, again IMO, he would return to Russia. Just my opinion of course. I'm not pretending to have any inside information. He just looks like a player that is having fun.

And I feel bad giving any Penguin love, but did anyone see the save that MAF made (on Hartnell maybe?) as he was falling backwards, puck was soaring over him, and he reached up and snagged it like an outfielder would, to rob a homerun. Hate the Pens, loved the save.

Posted by: Fro_ | December 18, 2009 10:38 AM | Report abuse

Does the NHL ever provide rationale for its disciplinary decisions? I suspect not, but if they do, can someone out there provide a link to the Koci rationale? I'd like to read it.

Posted by: FloridaCapsFan | December 18, 2009 10:43 AM | Report abuse

what was BS about that call in overtime, the coincidental minors for cross checking is that, as Keith Jones noted, the ref wasn't going to call Carcillo for anything until orpik retaliated with the spear. I'm sick of the pens (please note I don't even capitalize their name when I write it) getting these kinds of calls. If it wasn't a corss check before the spear, then it wasn't a cross check after the spear. That call in all likelihood cost the Flyers the game and cost the Caps 1st place for the moment. A two minute 4 on 3 is almost always a death sentence. Think CBJ @ Caps last month.

Posted by: griz0615 | December 18, 2009 10:48 AM | Report abuse

I didn't watch the game, but I thought there was no such thing as two mins for spearing. Spearing last I knew was automatic 5-min major and even attempted spearing is a double minor I thought.

Looking forward to the game - maybe dungeness crab, Tom?

This issue depresses me, so I will try to refrain from addressing it further. The Koci decision is a big black eye for the league. I will be watching to see whether the thugs of the league interpret it as "open season" on our skill players.

Posted by: zmega | December 18, 2009 11:10 AM | Report abuse

Orpik's penalty wasn't called a spear, it was called a slash. He did hit Carcillo in the mid section but his blade was flat, it wasn't tip of the blade first. Carcillo cross-check Orpik in the lower back. I f'in hate both teams, like I said earlier, I found out as I cheered for the Flyers because I didn't want the Pens to get any points, I hate the Flyers worse, which was surprising to me, probably because they are flat out dirty. I believe the official decided to throw Carcillo's butt in the box after Orpik retaliated was because he was only ignoring Carcillo's cross-check so the penalty call wouldn't result in a PP chance for either team. Once the retaliation happened he could call both and let it be 3 on 3. Carcillo got away with a lot of crap yesterday so a late call on his cross-check was OK in my book. Now I hate the Flyers even more because that joke of a team couldn't even win one of the few games I wanted them to win.

Didn't post after our last game since I didn't get to watch it till a day later. Was as close as it gets to a perfect game for us. Other than Greenie getting smoked by Koci. Speaking of which here's what I just posted on Puck Daddy's article about it:

That was the definition of a reckless, dangerous hit and Koci gets nothing, but a fine. Well done, Mr. Campbell. The season on star players getting wrecked by skill less goons is officially open.

Boudreau was right on in his rant. Agree with every word. You can say what you want about Ovechkin, but he's a great player who makes the NHL tick. Koci doesn't bring anything other than this crap to the game. There are better players than him in most Sunday roller hockey leagues.

No snow predicted here. But it MIGHT be too cold for the beach. Brrrrrrrr.

Anyone see the way they have the rink aligned at Fenway. Runs the 200' length from 3rd base across the 1st base. So, almost no decent seat in the place (fans who are close are behind the goals). Had they run the rink from 2B down to home plate, many would have good center-ice type seats. The seats in RF are a mile away anyway.

Whoever made the rink alignment decision belongs in the Brigade.

Plus seeing the likes of Carcillo, Asham, and Cote will certainly help the NHL shake the reputation hockey has with non-traditional potential hockey fans that may tune into the Winter Classic.

Ovechkin has turned many a casual fan into a Capitals fan throughout North America.

It's not about the standings. It's about money and TV ratings, and the Flyers have some of the best fans in hockey according to Forbes:

@Tom, Kirk, Lefty

I hate snow. Snow makes me very irritable. You guys keep up the smart-aleck weather remarks and I will have David Koci visit each of you to deliver a beat-down. I'm sure he's not busy these days. Oh wait...you say he is busy? Because the league failed to suspend him? Well, since he only plays three minutes a game I'm sure he can still find the time for you.
:-)

irock: The two goals are just outside the infield, one just beyond 3rd base and the other just beyound 1st base. I would have put one goal near home plate and the other in short center field. About 80% of the seats would have a better view if aligned that way.

There have unbelievable deals on the Flyers website to get fans to the games. With the use of DVRs on the rise I find it hard to believe that sponsors are willing to pay as much as they use to for advertising time. I would be very interested in seeing the actual numbers. I haven't watched a commerical in months. I purposely wait for 45 minutes after any game starts so I can fast forward through commercials and intermissions. It gets hard to hold off knowing the game is on, but it's much more fun to watch the games uninterupted. If sponsors are paying the same amount to advertise they did even 5 years ago, they are fools.

My point, the "fanatics" that go to the games are becoming more important than the "fanatics" that watch them on TV. The Caps are generating a lot of revenue and picking up speed. The roars in road crowds when the Caps score is getting louder and louder, and the roar for road teams in Verizon when they score, is going down at the same rate. I love our jerseys, and I know Ted said he wasn't going to add an alternate jersey, but with the team playing the way the are now, it might be the right time to get a third jersey on the market.

Fanohock: I prefer to watch "live," but don't mind a delay. Just have to be careful when you turn on the TV that it isn't on the same channel you're recording.

Tess: Look at the bright side. It's really hard trying to make a snow man out of sand.

i'll just create about 100 life size poster of green from the back. i'll place them strategically all around me (think of a house of mirrors) - then i'll either watch him running around slamming into the posters OR just watch his head explode trying to figure out what to do next.

i'm not scared of him - i can create even more posters of erskine to protect me

Ø i have to go put my jacket on - i think it might dip into the upper 60s - its frigid here Ø

i do prefer the sandman - i think i'll take an afternoon nap so i can have three beers (don't want to get sleepy) while i watch the game

I would love to see some of that cap space we recently gained beeing spent on Anton Volchenkov. A big (6'1", 226 lbs), mean stay-at-home defenceman.
He is always at the top of the list in hits and blocked shots. Cap hit at 2,5 mil. UFA after the season and only 27 years old.

This year for instance, he has 51 hits and 50 blocked shots in only 19 games (dislocated elbow). He has 380 minutes total-icetime, averages 20:31 min/g. Compare that with the Caps leading shotblocker Mike Green who has played 33 games, 819 min, average 24:05 min/g and has 48 hits and 50 blocked shots.

And he has only 10 PIM this season.

Would definately fit in well with the other russians in the team!

It's doubtful that the sens will let him go if they make/make a run at the playoffs though..

Richmondphil would disagree. He can't stand the guy...

@tominfl1 - I saw the seating chart. Completely ridiculous.

@tess2201 - Ø - And you call yourself a fan of Russian hockey... for shame. - Ø

A fan of Russian hockey, but not of Russian winter. It's -25F in Magnitogorsk today. Now that's brrrrr!

tess2201 - Effing brr! Poor Fedorov!!! Of course, he's probably used to it.

When I go to Russia next season, I will be sure to take several sets of longjohns!!! And wear them all at once!

Excuse me for interrupting, but what is snow? It is cold here today, it only hit the mid 70's. Water temp is about 65-70 I guess I will need to turn the pool heater on.
