Morning roundup: Caps stomp Sabres

(Jonathan Newton/The Washington Post)
Morning roundup

Nicklas Backstrom scored twice, Alex Ovechkin added a goal and two assists and the Caps took a 5-2 victory over Buffalo last night at Verizon Center.

Backstrom and the league's top-ranked offense struck just 78 seconds into the game and never trailed. Alex Ovechkin, Mike Green, and Brendan Morrison also scored and rookie goalie Michal Neuvirth made a career-high 32 saves to give the Capitals their third victory in four games.
Afterward, though, much of the talk focused on Backstrom and his goal-scoring prowess.
"Alex and Alex are passing me the puck a little bit more," Backstrom, a line mate with Ovechkin and Alexander Semin, cracked before turning serious. "I'm trying to find better spots, so maybe that's the reason. Bruce told me I have to shoot more, so I'm trying to do that." | Full story ยป

Great links Lindsay.

The BMo goal is already making its' rounds around the NHL. Great finesse/skill player with great skating and two-way play.

After my appointment, I will unfortunately have to go last minute christmas shopping. :(

It's amazing how Bruce says something is going to happen and then it does ( in this case B. Mo. overdue for a goal)

So sorry to disappoint...

It was a fantastic game last eve, and VC was rocking the red and disappointing the folks in the blue and gold sweaters. The top line was absolutely on fire. Neuvy acquitted himself well.

One huge factor was our team defense. Neuvy let out a few too many rebounds, which might be expected in his young career, but our boys got back to sweep them away to safety. Twice our D pulled a puck trickling to the line out of the goal mouth (one was Green, but I forget who got the other). This is just the sort of commitment to defense that we need.

And the offense was just spectacular.

Man, George Michael was the Sports Guy here in DC for so long. I use to watch the Sports Machine @ 11pm before there was ESPN. He covered wrestling which I love(d).

He was a pioneer in the industry.

Very sad news about George Michael. Condolences to the family.

THANKS CAPS for an outstanding game last night. Nicky---way to make two goals! Nice to see all the others scoring as well. This time a relative in Buffalo did NOT call me up to gloat! HA HA HA, or should I say HO HO HO!

Merry Christmas to all!

I was at that MSG game as well. Before the game, OV threw a puck over the glass to my 5 year old son because we had a "Merry CHristmas, Alex" sign written in Russian. We also met and spoke with GMGM. And then, the comeback. An AWESOME time that I will never forget. Seeing the picture of the boys in a group mob at center ice was amazing.

Thanks for a great time Caps! Keep them coming!

George Michael really revolutionized sports reporting, and he really brought home the Skins' greatest days to the people. He also hired Lindsay Czarniak. I could have done without the fake crowd noise and some of the other effects, but he built a dynasty on commercial TV that has only been approximated by cable offerings. Quite an accomplished guy. RIP.

What's even stranger is that he announced his leaving News 4 on this very day last year. Weird.

Awesome team effort for a majority of the game. Happy Holidays!

Does everyone realize that we only have 4 of our top 12 forwards signed for next season. That's an astounding number.

Ovi, Laich, Knuble and Clark

Posted by: JSchon | December 24, 2009 11:17 AM | Report abuse

Wow, I did not expect that. How many sports broadcasts did I watch of his?

Thousands.

RIP George.

@Sonyask

Brooks Laich also pulled one out from behind Neuvy, during the 4v4.

That's right -- Laich was terrific last night, again playing center.
