Morning roundup: Division dominance

(The Washington Post/Getty Images/AP)

Morning roundup

The Caps look to move to 8-0-0 in the Southeast Division tonight when they take on the Hurricanes at Verizon Center. The only team that's undefeated against its division, Washington can stretch its lead over Atlanta to 13 points with a win against last-place Carolina. | Game preview »

Carolina Hurricanes (7-18-5)
Washington Capitals (19-6-6)

Verizon Center, 7 p.m.
TV: Comcast SportsNet
Radio: 820 AM, 1500 AM

Two Bog offerings:

*Matt Bradley talks fatherhood.

*Quintin Laing talks about his broken jaw. On what one eats when one's jaw is wired shut:

"When you're not allowed to eat during the day, the days seem a lot longer," he said. "It's just kind of the same thing every day, the same shakes. It gets old really fast. Actually my wife just made shakes and she just stuck them in front of my face and said drink this. She kept track of the calories. Most mornings it was oatmeal with some banana, yogurt, protein and milk. For lunch it was soup, then another protein shake. Dinner was more soups, maybe mixed in some Alphagetti, like ABCs in a can."
Just to be clear, this was blended Algphagettis, pureed into a liquid state and ingested through a straw jammed underneath his front teeth, sucked down to keep his calorie count up.

Some other odds and ends:

*TSN says its "No Guts, No Glory" honors "NHL players who put themselves in harm's way and display a sense of courage that goes above and beyond the call of duty."

So where's Quintin Laing? I'm no homer, but that omission makes this list irrelevant. Pureed spaghettios. Through a straw, TSN. Through a straw.

*CTV doesn't seem to get the Ovechkin-Crosby rivalry. (Puck Daddy)

*Mike Vogel's preview of tonight's game (Caps)

*Best for last: SI's Jim Kelley responds in the form of a novel to the backlash from his controversial column about Alex Ovechkin. In summary: Some clarifying, some correcting, some re-emphasizing, some context-adding. Still thinks Ovechkin is reckless and Ted Leonsis is an enabler.

Lindsay, you've made my morning once again. Great reading, and a nice chuckle (too early for a guffaw). Thank you!

Did I wake up in bizarro world this morning? What's going on with those records? Maybe I dreamed that the Caps won 19 of their first 30 games and, now that I've woken up, I'm reluctant to face the reality that this is 2005?

And I still think Jim Kelly is an idiot.

Lack of sleep makes people do weird things. Records are fixed.

Jim Kelley's columns read like somebody who never played the game. You can read 10 different books about hockey, and you still will not know as much as somebody who has played the game competitively.

Every time Kelley writes "but" after saying things he knows are wrong, it comes across as a petulant teenager making excuses for why they got caught doing something stupid. "I'm not comparing Ovie to Carcillo, BUT", "I never wrote I was there, I SAID I was there", "Sure, lots of people agreed with May, BUT" (all paraphrased, of course). Give me a break.

The only reckless car in this convoy is Kelley, who can't seem to write what he means the first time (not a good problem to have for somebody who makes his living doing what he does). Claiming you aren't comparing Ovie to Carcillo right after you've done just that makes him sound like an idiot who doesn't even read his own columns; and lets face it, if Kelley won't even read his own columns, why should anyone else?

Humbug.

TGIF.

Lets go Caps!

Even with the records the way they were early this morning Caps make the playoffs...been there....done that.

Wow. for whatever reason, jim kelley is in the hockey hall of fame. through the efforts of caps nation, we forced this HOF writer to eat $h!t in his own column. as someone who suggested to jim that he may have been mistaken about where the ovie-brier, i'm proud of the response from caps fans and ted. show's just how far we've come.

but to be clear, kelley was lying about the ovie hit on briere. he was trying to make a point about some of the nasty stuff ovie has done and claimed to have been there to witness it with his own eyes. thinking it was in buffalo was a mistake. claiming you were there for the hit when you weren't is a lie. and since he was there, why didnt he lump briere into the pool of reckless players. that spear was behind the play, not the result of a hockey play, and could have been just as dangerous as a knee to knee (for may generations of ovechkins).

it was big of jim to admit his mistakes, but his conclusions still dont make sense.

btw, i'm at a loss to make the connection between carcillo's punch on brads and ovie's "recklessness". carcillo is enabled by the acceptance by players that a clean hit deserves a beat down. he's been doing it long before ovie hit gleason or kaleta.

when ovie sees guys like gleason or kaleta run around, he doesnt drop the gloves and try and sucker punch guys like duco or carcillo. he takes a number and tries to get them back with a big hit. unfortunately in the case of gleason, he went overboard. regardless of what kelley thinks, the hit on kaleta should not have been a major.

and regarding kelley's statement about whether kaleta's visor cut him. well, the reason ovie got the major and misconduct was the fact that kaleta's nose was cut. if he's not wearing a visor, he probably doesnt get cut, and ovie probably doesnt get a major and then his hit on gleason is only his first misconduct and therefore no suspension and no article from kelley.

ok, i'm done now. go caps.

Nuff said about that Kelly guy. He's wrong we're right. Done.

I'm just looking forward to rocking the red tonight at VC! (tominfl, may I suggest that sine we've been feasting on the SE, perhaps a robust steak would not be a bad choice, with perhaps a 2006 Ponzi Tavola Pinot Noir (Oregon).)

Me, I'm having beer and peanuts. Go Caps!

1. Quintin Laing's wife seems like one dedicated woman.

2. You just jinxed us, we'll get our first SE loss tonight. Oh well.

3. Screw Jim Kelley.

Quentin should have talked to Calle Johanson(sp?) about eating with a wired jaw. He used to get crab cakes put in a blender with cream of crab soup. Much better then alphabet soup in a blender.

The name Jim Kelley is jinxed. Can get you to the highway, then you crash and burn. If you happen to be named Jim Kelley(laces out Dan!!), change your name and don't suffer the ill fate of the sports gods.

Oh, Kelley replied. That should be interesting. After his original moronic character assassination article on Ovie I sent him my own novel that he won't soon forget. F-ing d-bag.

Came across the ranking of NHL's top defensemen and thought it might be interesting for our resident Mike Green haters. Yeah, let's trade him or use him on the wing!

http://www.ctvolympics.ca/hockey/news/newsid=22164.html

There's a link at the bottom that details how these rankings are compiled. Interestingly enough for me is that there's only 1 Russian d-man in the top 30. That will definitely not be our strength in the Olympics. We'll just have to score a boatload of goals. One thing's for sure. Russia won't be boring to watch.

Blending spaghettis?? Is Quinting missing any theeth? I bet he is, you could put a pretty wide straw that would allow a whole meatball through.

So basically Jim Kelly made up and/or inventing things for his column to make Ovechkin look bad? What a great, great journalist. He really should be fired for being such a moron.

Posted by: futbolclif | December 11, 2009 9:40 AM | Report abuse

*way to stick to your guns jim kelley* whata freakin coward. I agree with Checkingline... jim kelley may be in the HOF but it sounds like he has never played the game of hockey

Posted by: _stevo | December 11, 2009 9:55 AM | Report abuse

Just read Jim Kelley's CYA story. He said his been watching hockey for '30 years'. Watching from the bleachers is not the same as watching from on the ice in the play. Typical waterboy d-bag journalist. Hey Jim, make sure the pucks are cold for practice.

As for cuts to the face from gear-> You don't have to be slammed into the boards to be cut by a helmet. I was playing pick-up and went into the boards with another player. We went in pretty easy. My helmet(I was using a coconut for pick-up) pinched down on my forehead causing a good 6 stitch gash. YOU DO NOT HAVE TO BE SLAMMED INTO THE BOARDS TO CUT YOURSELF ON A HELMET OR FACESHEILD. Go sharpen my skates Jim, then clean the shower you overated waterboy!!!!

Who's the ass responsible at CTV for putting the Russian flag upside down on the Sid v. OV graphic?

"Alphaghetti"...so that's what they call "ABC's & 123's" in Canada, eh?

8 > Jim Kelley

Posted by: Rhino40 | December 11, 2009 10:19 AM | Report abuse

My reply to Kelly's reply:

Your reply is much more reasonable as you seem to have stayed off crack this time around and realized just how ridiculous your original column on Ovie was (nothing short of a character assassination), but you are being very disingenuous when you try to dissolve people's criticism by making snarky references to how your column didn't tweet well. Please don't insult our intelligence. We read the whole column and you did indeed compare Ovechkin to some of the worst goons in NHL history. You now realize how ridiculous that was, but you can't bring yourself to admitting it so you hide behind insulting your readers' intelligence and claiming that your comments were taken out of context. Ovechkin's knee on knee hits were accidents resulting from players trying to evade his 100% legal hits. The actions you compared these accidents to were deliberate hooliganism. Like Jon Stewart said the other day in reference to Fox News' style yours is very similar to saying, "Obama gave a speech in Berlin today. Isn't that interesting that Hitler used to give speeches in Berlin as well?" Please give us all a break. Ovie will keep playing the way he is which is what makes him the best player in the game. If some people don't like it they can shove it. It's a fast game and accidents will happen. There's no malice in Ovechkin's actions. If you can't see that you really don't know much about hockey. Why don't you go and write a column slamming Vincent Lecavalier for playing like crap even though he gets $10 million per year. And don't forget to make some generalizations like how this is typical of a Canadian player who has a fat long term contract.

Posted by: ranndino | December 11, 2009 10:42 AM | Report abuse

I wrote Jim kelley after reading the first article, what a waste. After reading his latest, he tries to apologize, but he still doesn't understand the game. I may be a Caps fan, but OV's hit on Kaleta was shoulder to shoulder, I played it back on DVR and I am positive. kelly is trying to justify one of the worst character assasinations I have ever read on a NHL player! SI is like ESPN, a total wasteland for hockey.
