Morning Roundup, Part II: By the Numbers

There's a lot of Caps-centric activity on the Internet today, so here's a little addendum:

(Caps/coverage Q&A at 2:30 today.)

Check out some mind-boggling Caps vs. Skins numbers over at the D.C. Sports Bog:

Margin of Victory: The Redskins' margin of victory in their two wins is a total of 5. The Caps' margin of victory in their two wins is a total of 5.
Early Scoring: In the first 30 minutes of their two wins, the Redskins have scored a total of six points. In the first 30 minutes of their two wins, the Caps have scored a total of six goals. (For the season, the Redskins are averaging 3.25 points in the first 30 minutes, while the Caps are averaging 3.0 goals in that span.)

Is the Caps' top line of Alex Ovechkin-Nicklas Backstrom-Alexander Semin the league's best? From Puck Daddy:

With two offensive stars on his wings, does Backstrom believe this is the season he becomes a 100-point center?
"Yeah. Maybe," he said with a smile, before the season began. "You have to produce when you play with them. We'll see what happens. See how it works."
In two games, it's worked with lethal artistry: The trio has combined for 16 points, assisting on each other's goals against Boston and Toronto. They've exhibited that rare hockey sonar between linemates that enables them to anticipate each other's actions; no small feat when Ovechkin and Semin are to of the most instinctual scorers in hockey.

Anyone else notice that NHL.com has a link saying "Email Versus about NHL Games on DirecTV"?... but it really is about emailing DirecTV about NHL Games on Versus :( Bettman dyslexia? I got excited thinking they might be trying to attack from both sides to get results... wishing for too much?

I gotta say, I was doubtful that the Ovechkin/Backstrom/Semin and Lacih/Morrison/Knuble combos were the way to go, but they've looked great so far. I hope all BB does all year is prove me wrong and look like a genius.

For you non-twitterers like me:

-Boudreau says Varlamov will star tonight in Philly; Schultz is in and Pothier is out.

Sorry. I thought the Redskins were like that aunt in your family with a house full of cats. *shrug* Any chance we could keep this a no-Redskins zone please? *shivers*

Continued from the last thread... overall VERSUS to me is a Mickey Mouse channel and I pray for the day that ESPN reacquires the NHL rights.

Is there any truth to the rumor that BB called in the play to JC17 in which he hit Moss for the touchdown? JZ couldn't have pulled that one out of his a$$ if he tried.

@ DCTexan90
I tried the e-mailing DirecTV route...I got the same information that is listed on there web site and the usual we value you as a customer blah blah blah. The end result no game @ home tonight...so it would seem that going out or streaming are the only viable option(s) for tonight.

Caps dropped in on ESPN's Power Rankings at number 1, "On pace for 410 goals this season! We know that won't happen, but what a start for Alex Ovechkin, who already leads the league with six points. Ovechkin, Alexander Semin, Brooks Laich and Nicklas Backstrom are the top four scorers with 21 combined points. Well, we knew they could score goals."

I kinda like this..putting in Sarge in Philly. No better place to test him out than in those hostile waters. I think the combination of being tested by the Philly forecheck as well as the fact he's competing for a spot vs being handed a spot should serve him well.

Got to improve the FO%. Through two games it's about 40% and BB doesn't use him in the defensive end.

nothing against Pothier but I think Boudreau just wants more size in there v Philly.

stevo, my best guess is that Varly's starting in Philly tonight so Theo can have the home start on Thursday.

Looking forward to the 2:30 chat and even more to tonight's game!
