Morning Skate Update

Looks like Michal Neuvirth will make his first career start tonight at St. Pete Times Forum. If he doesn, he'll be the eighth player to make his NHL debut for the Caps this season. Incredible for a team that's leading its division, isn't it?

Also looks like the scratches will be Karl Alzner, Milan Jurcina and Jay Beagle. That means Staffan Kronwall will get into his first NHL game in nearly a year. And it looks like Alexander Semin will return and Viktor Kozlov will miss his fourth straight game with a groin pull (and probably tomorrow's game, as well).

Why do I keep saying "looks"? Because Coach Bruce Boudreau was coy about his lineup against the Bolts, who are expected to have Mike McKenna in net.

I'll have another update in a few minutes on Olie Kolzig.

Alzner out? In favor or Mo?

Posted by: puff1 | February 14, 2009 12:35 PM | Report abuse

How the hell is Alzner scratched in favor of Mo or Schultz?!?!

Posted by: WilliamsJK2 | February 14, 2009 12:36 PM | Report abuse

mo is being shopped.

and alzner hasn't been that spectacular since his return.

Whee, new thread bite.

Oh dude. Me being gloomy got positive comments out of people that aren't JSchon!

I HAVE TO DO THIS MORE OFTEN! :D

Seriously, though. 4-2-1 is not exactly where I want to be right now, not with the Panthers breathing down our necks and the Devils leapfrogging us on a hot streak. It's good, but I wouldn't call it good enough.

I don't like what I'm seeing lately, and what I am stating is absolutely no more than you and others have been saying since the Kings game. We did great when our lineup was half chocolate, and I think that was in part because the Hershey guys took nothing for granted. Now we've got our stars back we're cruising again, and it's really aggravating.

Add to that that the Lightning haven't been that bad lately (see Peerless' take on the Lightning for all the numbers) and the goalie situation and we've got all the makings of a Wild West shootout.

And, Alzner being scratched in favor of Mo? WTH? Are we trying to extend his streak of stupid penalties that leave us in a 5-on-3 situation?

Posted by: kittypawz | February 14, 2009 12:38 PM | Report abuse

i got it wrong. its actually 4-1-2. which is way better.

rags love to take games to the SO because they need the points. guess what...SO won't help you come playoffs.

we take to many penalties, but i don't see our troubles as prevalent as you do...

OoooOoOookay. This is gonna be an interesting game... I wish us luck.

richmondphil: If you say so, dude. I'll remember you said that when we lose next. :)

Posted by: kittypawz | February 14, 2009 12:45 PM | Report abuse

@richmondphil

Alzner, if he's doing his job, isn't going to be spectacular. :) When you don't notice a defensive defenseman all night (like most nights with Schultz) they're doing their job. When they make mistakes, it usually shows up big-time....

Posted by: MikeL-Caps911 | February 14, 2009 12:47 PM | Report abuse

hey, ill admit we played a sloppy game against the kings and against the senators. and we played a sloppy 3rd against the rags.

but, we also played great games against the red wings, boston, and the devils.

i like it like this, compared to the other way around.

Posted by: richmondphil | February 14, 2009 12:49 PM | Report abuse

thats exactly what I said about defensive defense men earlier. i do try to watch our defenders, including our stay at homes, though as that is our "weakness."
hes made a few noticeable mistakes, and thats probably why he is getting the pine tonight.

Posted by: richmondphil | February 14, 2009 12:51 PM | Report abuse

Hn. I still say that scratching Alzner in favor of the guy who takes more penalties 4-on-5 than any other D in the NHL probably isn't the greatest idea in the world unless you want the PK to get a thorough workout. (Sticktap to Japers' Rink for that little nugget.)

@MikeL-Caps911

"Like most nights with Shultz"? I think I notice him getting pushed around or skated around every game. I think Jurcina and Alzner have been way better than him or Mo recently. And why would they start a guy who hasn't proven himself in the NHL over two guys who have been anchoring the blueline for a majority of the season?

believe it or not, defensemen arent solely defined by a "streak of penalties". Alzner has been near awful the last few games, penalties or no penalties.

Posted by: WilliamsJK2 | February 14, 2009 12:36 PM

because he was clearly our worst player in the last game and as someone else mentioned he's been less than average since his recall. glad the coach sees it.

Posted by: cstanton1 | February 14, 2009 1:51 PM | Report abuse

So Alzner had a tough game in NYC, so what? He's leaps and bounds better than Schultz and Mo. When is going to end with these two. Truth is, Beagle should also be out there tonight.

Posted by: Willy6 | February 14, 2009 1:57 PM | Report abuse

No, Morrisonn was clearly our worst player last game.

But close second comes Schultz and Poti - THEN maybe Alzner.

Just sending Alzner a message...

Alzner and Jurcina scratched over Morrisonn and Shultz? Good luck Neuvirth, you're going to need it.

Great luck wont be enough for Neuvirth!
We'll see another loss from a "team" like TB
Well at least after 6+ goals in our net Mo and Shultz are going to be scratched for the rest of season

Posted by: Tondi | February 14, 2009 3:23 PM | Report abuse

schultz, schultz, why o' why do we have to keep that dumb goffy looking idoit in when we have such talent waiting in the wings. Alzner can skate circles around him and I look forward to seeing what Kromwell can do.

Good Luck to Neuvirth.

WHy oh why Does Bruce like Schultz so much, please someone tell me

Posted by: HockeyFarmer | February 14, 2009 4:46 PM | Report abuse

In the spirit of the name calling for OUR team, HockeyFarmer, for your comment, you too are an idiot! There. See? Feeling peeved that anyone would take a potshot at you? Sadly, unlike Schultz, he can't react to your namecalling. Whereas, you're capable of targeting me with your anger and offense. Schultz doesn't have that luxury. Sure, what he doesn't know won't hurt him but still, let's stay behind our team, win or lose. Otherwise, you guys are no better than those fairweather friends who come over to your places to watch games on your big screen and don't even bother bringing over a case of beers. Losers. Let's Go Caps!
