Morning Skate Update (Updated)

A few quick notes from American Airlines Center:

Jose Theodore will start in goal while David Steckel and Eric Fehr will be the scratches. Viktor Kozlov, meantime, is back from a four game absence (knee sprain) and will skate on the top line. And defenseman John Erskine, after missing a game with a bruised calf, also is ready to go.

Meantime, Marty Turco (4.04 goals against and .848 save percentage) will start in goal for the Stars.

The lines are as follows:

Forwards
Ovechkin-Backstrom-Kozlov
Laich-Fedorov-Semin
Fleischmann-Nylander-Clark
Brashear-Gordon-Bradley
Scratches--Steckel, Fehr

Defense
Morrisonn-Green
Schultz-Sloan
Jurcina-Erskine

Update:Some other notes and quotes to get you ready for tonight's game in Big D:

*Kozlov said he's still in some discomfort, but that, "there's no gain if no pain." So he's back in. Kozlov's return, Coach Bruce Boudreau hopes, will spark Alex Ovechkin and Nicklas Backstrom, who in case you haven't heard, are off to sluggish starts.

"We need them to play [well] right away," Boudreau said of the top line, which hasn't had much time together this season because of Kozlov's injury.

*Tom Poti (groin muscle strain) skated again today and is getting better, but he's not quite there yet. The sooner he gets back, the better because the Caps are really missing him right now, more so than most people think.

"Second unit on the power play, first penalty killing unit, shutdown 'D', gives you your top four," Boudreau said. "He's a big part of our team."

*Steckel, who was not scratched at all last season, will take a seat because Boudreau is not happy with his play through seven games. He's tied with Milan Jurcina for the team's worst plus minus (minus-2).

"Stecks has been struggling a little bit, quite frankly," Boudreau said. "We'll probably miss Steckel's penalty killing, but Gordon missed two games [as a scratch] and came back and played really well. We'll see if that [motivates] Dave."

"He doesn't look like he's him," Boudreau added, referring to Steckel. "Dave's got to use his body more. He's 6 foot 5, 220 pounds, he's got to be more of a physical presence."

That's it for now. I'll update before the game if there are any new developments.

Great to Tarik, thanks. I'm happy to see Kozy back and think he'll be the key to turning it around for the team. His presence on the boards is definitely need as our cycling down low seems to be hurting, and some extra puck possession couldn't hurt. Can't wait for tonight's game, as well as the other 14.

GO Caps!

I'm glad the old lineup is essentially back. Here's hoping Kozlov can help Ovie out and get him some scoring chances.

I would like to see Steckel more that Bradshear, skill vs. physical presence.

Anybody want to go to Tuesday's game? I have one spare ticket in 426. Mauree, feel like another road trip?

Steve, you're gonna start attracting all sorts of crazies! ;)

I like having fedorov centering OV. That worked well. Backs centering Semin

It will be good to see Kozlov back in the lineup. Hopefully Erskine plays like he deserves the raise.

Anyone know if there is a Pre-Cap today?

Posted by: kvarnson | October 25, 2008 2:19 PM | Report abuse

can we impose a game misconduct penalty for people who post "first" (or any variations!) when they aren't actually 1st!

maybe a 2 game susopension mandated by the league?

Posted by: ewwsombra | October 25, 2008 2:37 PM | Report abuse

I'm still hung up on the Erskine contract extension. No faith in Lepisto or some other prospect to be a 5/6? The way they are against the Cap, as much as it bothers me to say so, if the team goes to pieces this year than the GM is on the line.

Posted by: lornemyoung | October 25, 2008 2:43 PM | Report abuse

I'd still like to see Fehr in instead of Fleischmann. I think he'd provide at least as much offense, better defense, and a more physical style of play.

This is a big game for pride.

I'll be shocked if the Caps manage any points, just looking for them to make the game respectable.

It must be depressing for the players to know something great is there, yet allow the same manager to ruin it, over and over again.
No change in GM, No contender.

It would just be hunky-dory if the Caps could win this one. Please?

I'm a displaced Caps fan. A refugee in Jersey - the home of boring hockey. Wanted to let you know there are discounted tickets available to the Caps-Devs game on Sat, Nov. 15. Go to http://www.devilsfanclub.org/pages/promotions.htm for more info. I'll be there and hope to see other Caps fans rocking the red (or white, actually) in the Rock.

It's al GM's fault, too.

whats depressing is that you would continue to watch a team you so obviously dislike. plenty of other things to watch on tv.

i especially like the comment that there is something great there but GM ruins it. so who put that "something great" together? did they just show up on their own?

I had also noticed how empty their arena was especially for a Saturday night, that really sucks - I thought our arena had been bad in recent years but once we started winning it began to fill up. It's a shame it's not happening there too.

Posted by: BlondeCapsFan | October 25, 2008 9:44 PM | Report abuse

Is it me or does Mike Green remind you of Semin from a few years ago. I used to cal him 50-50 because half the time he made great plays and half the time he made boneheaded plays. I am seeing a lot of the same from Green right now. Agree? Disagree? Discuss.

Posted by: WVPhil | October 25, 2008 9:47 PM | Report abuse

I really hate to say this, but that was a GREAT defensive play by the Stars on Nylander.

Posted by: Greg S. | October 25, 2008 9:48 PM | Report abuse

Noticed that when the Caps scored the roar from all the Caps fans there. Awesome!!!

Posted by: washingtoncapitals | October 25, 2008 9:52 PM | Report abuse

Green causes more rushes for the other team by having his shots blocked right in front of him then he does for us by running it, His little wait 5 minutes then try for a pass move led directly to the stars last goal.

Posted by: mimi72555 | October 25, 2008 9:52 PM | Report abuse

@WVPhil
Gotta agree with you dude...that last goal had Green's name written all over it. NOt sure if he is trying to do too much to justify his big contract. But that is the 2nd big snaffu in 3 games that has directly led to a goal. Come on Greenie!

Posted by: robblahs | October 25, 2008 9:53 PM | Report abuse

Green was half skating on that last Stars' goal. Puck went right by him and he barely moved to try to get it. Maybe he's shooting for a contract on Broadway.

green needs to get his head out of his a$$. he's been horrible tonight. why is he in the corner on that play?

OK, my instant analysis: It was an ugly win, but a win is a win is a win. We got our 2 points, and because Dallas is in the Western Conference, the fact that they got a point is pretty irrelevant. Hell yeah. :D

See you all on Tuesday at Verizon Center! I'll be in Section 413 as always.

Smells like Victory.

I just hope the Caps do some work on their defense, but boy-o-boy am I glad that the Caps won that game

Posted by: JIMALLCAPS | October 25, 2008 10:38 PM | Report abuse

I'll take the ugly win but I hope BB stays concerned about the fact that the Caps seems to relax when they lead... (that's the impression I got from the feed and the score)... this is the 4th straight game that relaxation after lead happens.

A win is a win...but agree with previous comments of:

1. Defense has to do better (i.e. Erskine - although that may be asking the impossible)

2. Green needs to play within himself

Yea right, I'm a troll, a troll who has had full season tickets for 10 years. JT played like crap! How many 5 hole goals does he need to let in in one game?? How many were his fault? Most of them! I've watched every game, which game did he steal for us? When did he get a shutout? I would have rather seen Varlamov learn than JT suck all year!

Man, the Caps needed that. I didn'r get to watch - went to the Bears game instead - but hey. Caps win one, desperately needed, the Bears win (again), Machesney makes an UNBELIEVABLE save (first chance goes off the pads straight up, Machesney's D dives behind him, there's a rebound try that gets past him but he grabs it behind him before it crosses the line). Nice stuff.

Looking forward to Tuesday. I'll be in 429 if anyone wants to say hi.

majiksea: That's cool. I wasn't trying to offend when I called you a troll -- that doesn't make you a lesser person. :P I'd be willing to bet we've seen each other and don't know it. Reasonable people can disagree about stuff. I think Theodore has been picking up his game as of late. But again, just opinions.

I'd still like to see Fehr in instead of Fleischmann. I think he'd provide at least as much offense, better defense, and a more physical style of play.

Still doubting Thomas???????

Posted by: bmartin230 | October 25, 2008 11:09 PM | Report abuse

or Tomas :)

Flash has been earning his ice time with his hard work on the forecheck and now he is adding the points. I would love to see Fehr get a chance as well, but not at Flash's expense right now.

We almost certainly see each other every game. Yes JT has picked up his game, but he is still letting in soft 5 hole goals, but remember I was not a fan of You-Eh either. You_Eh played great for us, but as he has shown this year he was playing over his head and he has come back to earth. JT needs to stop the easy goals and quit letting stuff through the 5 hole. The goals scored by Dallas tonight were pretty pedestrian and should have been stopped, if he even stops the 2 easiest we win going away. That game should never have been in overtime. Yes he has been better, but he has not been good and he needs to be GREAT if we want to go deep in the playoffs and he can't even see great from where he is. We need a number 1 goalie who has earned the spot instead of being handed the mantle of #1.

Posted by: majiksea | October 25, 2008 11:58 PM | Report abuse

I liked Huet while he was here. I think the amount he was offered was a bit rich but about right for his skill level. Chicago is WAY overpaying for him.

JT is about right, too. I think he has flashes of greatness and will be pretty good most of the time. Ice is slippery and does wierd things to skates, pucks and pads. Softies will occur. This D bites, so we have to expect a lot of goals against.

Posted by: Greg S. | October 26, 2008 12:05 AM | Report abuse

A question I need to ask: does Green have any interest in playing defense? I ask that with no sarcasm. The only time he looks into the game is when he is leading a break out or pinching in looking for a goal. When asked to play D he looks, well, uninterested.

Anybody else think so?

Posted by: ChrisAm | October 26, 2008 12:09 AM | Report abuse

Hate saying this, but with a butterfly goalie, most of your goals are going to be five hole or through you, because you cover so much of the net with positioning. It's not so much of a "he sucks", just we've had Huet and Kolzig and Johnson the last 10 years, and we're used to stand up, where if you get beat, it's on reflex.

I don't care if Theo looked bad tonight. I don't care if he looked good. The team wasted two great starts by him, and he could have allowed ten goals, and if the Caps won, I'd give him all the credit in the world. He's getting little help in his own end, and when he did (I.E. Yotes), he got no help on the other end.

With Boudreau's "Go go go" offense, it doesn't matter who is in goal -- He's going to look bad from time to time. The defense is not as important in the system, it seems. Which is fine, but having played in that same system a lot as a goaltender, I feel for Jose.

Posted by: Whitermage | October 26, 2008 12:24 AM | Report abuse

majiksea: I can agree with that, I suppose. I think we'd all like to see Theodore play great instead of good (or just okay). Still think he can get there though.

I'm the one wearing the Caps shirt and the goofy large-ish glasses. :P Probably doesn't narrow it down too much, but I'm sure someone will come by and say hi now.

Posted by: GregAnnapolis | October 26, 2008 12:27 AM | Report abuse

That was a very exciting game. Great win. We seriously need a decent goalie though. Yeah, JT played well last game and made a couple of great saves late tonight, but he still let in at least 2 bad goals.

What's this crap with the next game not being televised at all? What century is this? NHL Center Ice says no coverage. That means neither local Wash or Nashville TV is showing it? If anyone has any info on this please post.

Posted by: ranndino | October 26, 2008 12:27 AM | Report abuse

majiksea: And I apologize for calling you out as a troll prematurely. You were obviously just really frustrated at the time, and that's fairly understandable.

Posted by: GregAnnapolis | October 26, 2008 12:29 AM | Report abuse

ranndino: Versus has an exclusive US television window during that time, and the Caps (along with any other US teams playing at that time) got screwed. It's one of two games (I think -- don't quote me on that... this might be the only one) all season that this happens to. I agree, it sucks.

Posted by: GregAnnapolis | October 26, 2008 12:32 AM | Report abuse

Quit apologizing for JT please. It's one thing when the D gives up great chances. It's another when he keeps constantly letting in shots that any NHL level goalie is expected to stop. I love goalies and always get behind them as much as I can, but he's just sucked so far for us. He had one good game as far as I'm concerned. That was the last loss to Phoenix. He needs someone to push him. Brent can't do it cuz he's a career backup. If this keeps up I say bring up Varlamov and let him play a few games. Maybe that will at least threaten JT's #1 status.

Posted by: ranndino | October 26, 2008 12:36 AM | Report abuse

Yo Ranndino

Exactly, bring up Varlamov and let them earn the #1 spot. I like Johnny but he is what he is. He has had numerous chances to be #1 when Olie was hurt. If he had strung a bunch of wins together, made some amazing saves, stole a game or two, he would have stayed in the net, but as things are now, Kolzig is the last goalie we've had to earn his way into the net. It was probably time for Olie to retire and our prospects have not worked out in the last BUNCH of years (anyone still remember Wallet? There were calls for him to take Olie's spot and he is now playing beer league). So when the time is right, probably not now, but Dec/Jan bring him up and tell them to play for the privledge of being #1. In the mean time please Dave P work with this guy and keep him off horses, his legs are already bowed enough!

By the way all. I am happy, very happy, that we won!!! Go Caps! We needed that win a lot. The "bad" teams in the SE are winning, we don't need a hill to climb this year.
