Morrisonn and Schultz Appear Good to Go

Everyone is present and accounted this morning at practice, including defensemen Shaone Morrisonn and Jeff Schultz. That would appear to be a sure sign that both will be in the lineup tomorrow for Game 1 against the Flyers.

Update:Morrisonn said he'll play; Schultz said he's going to take the morning skate before deciding whether to play.

I've got to run, but I hope to post another update (or two) this afternoon.

Tarik,

any word on Nylander or Clarke? I've heard that they have been skating recently...

Posted by: pch49 | April 10, 2008 10:47 AM | Report abuse

Tarik,

Any updates on Clark?

Some others have posted that a player needs to play 41 games in the regular season or 1 game in the SCF to get their name on the CUP... exceptions can be made... I know I'm ahead of myself, but I'm confident in the team!!! GO CAPS!

Anyway, with Clarkie only playing 18 games (and I know he's pushing to return - who knows when for sure) - would he qualify?

Posted by: Tracy | April 10, 2008 10:49 AM | Report abuse

THATS WHAT I'M TAKING ABOUT.

I just gave out a loud HELL YEAH in the office. 1 guy started snickering cause he knows its related to hockey and nothing to do with work.

BTW, I'm asking because Clark is one of my favorite players and I hope the answer is YES :-)

Posted by: Tracy | April 10, 2008 10:50 AM | Report abuse

I never thought we'd get Mo back this soon- that's really good news (although you know the flyers will be going hard after that shoulder).

Tarik, I hear that LaCanfora will be joining you. Awesome news. The 2 best writers the post has... Good stuff.

I hope you guys are working on this till june.

Thanks for the kick ass job.

Clark and Nylander do not appear close to returning, though their chances improve if the Caps' run goes for a bit.

Posted by: Tarik | April 10, 2008 10:54 AM | Report abuse

I'm worried that Clarkie is done for the year. My guess on what's been happening -- he feels better and better, and skates harder and harder, and then reinjures it again and has to start all over. Two weeks ago -- when he made the road trip -- he seemed close to coming back, now he's skating on his own again.

Tarik, thanks for the update. This is very good news indeed!

Posted by: billy | April 10, 2008 10:59 AM | Report abuse

Tracy-

I love Clarkie but at this stage I would rather he not play. I know he's the captain and a great player but there's great chemistry going on now and I'd hate to see it compromised. Same with Nylander.

jasno mentioned it on the skins blog. He's pretty fired up for the series. He loves the old skool Patrick division matchup

Posted by: Go Skins Go | April 10, 2008 11:04 AM | Report abuse

Good work T!

IMO the caps will be successful if they simply just go out and play their game the way they have been the last month...good entry passes, more or less solid defense, and crashing the net. Getting too concerned with the flyers physicality might throw a couple of our playoff rookies off their game and that would be the end of it.

Play your game boys!!! dont worry about the broad street "bullies"

Clark and Nylander were practicing this morning before everyone else. They looked okay on the ice. I did not notice any pain from skating and shooting for either of them.

BTW - it's good to be back!

J La used to cover the Caps for the Post in the pre-Tarik days. The coverage has improved 200% since then.

I sort of think of the "any word on Clark???" as a running joke. I don't suppose anyone asks that with any seriousness anymore(?). I mean, if Tarik had an update on Clark, do you think he would hold it back just to tease us fans?

I haven't checked, but I'm guessing pics of Green's new 'do are up on htpp://eitmonline.com, or will be later today.

I have to respectfully disagree if Clark is healthy he should play regardless of whatever chemistry is created he is our captain and a good player. Same with Steckel same with Nylander (course no way he'll be healthy). I'd love to see Clarks toughness and leadership against Philly.

I guess I am the skeptic in the picks of the so called experts.

What are they basing their pick of the caps on?

Primarily OV and Huet. They will say they have a few good vets that can help out but their whole focus is OV and Huet

If OV wasnt an MVP they would be saying there is no depth and the D is weak and would be picking the Flyers.

I'd like to see Schultz give it an extra day or two and be ready for game 3 in Philly. Being that it was a leg injury, need those legs for the playoffs. Plus Eminger is someone that given same opportunity Green has, could make some noise in playoffs playing with Erskine or Jurcina being the stay at home D-man like Morrisonn does for Green to make offense happen.

Posted by: Jeff | April 10, 2008 1:53 PM | Report abuse

I agree with you Tommmy. However, I think that will work to our advantage. People are learning, but when they underestimate us and think this team in only OV and Huet, our "lesser lights" can turn up the heat. Three guys on OV, go ahead, that leaves two of our guys open.

On another topic, Marty Biron's eyes are creepy. Do you think this gives him an advantage when facing an opposing team's forwards?

So, I forgot to tell you all. While I was on vacation, I ran into a ton of Canadian people. I met this older couple at dinner (while I was wearing my Caps tee) and they started talking about hockey. They said that the Caps only have Ovechkin... they are fans for the Canadiens... and stated that Montreal is the Cinderella team this year in the playoffs. "Whhhaaaaat??" I started to laugh so hard. How would that be possible.
Anyways, a bunch of people had props for the Caps and all of them LOVE Ovechkin. It was nice to hear and I had to represent the Caps down by the equator.

Cinderella - us serious?

Posted by: 828 | April 10, 2008 1:58 PM | Report abuse

Wait, doesn't Cinderella imply that you had to be down in the ashes of hades before rising? Since when does finishing first in the Conference, having been there most of the year, classify as having struggled to get where you are? Oh, I forgot, they're Canadian. You'll have to forgive the Canadians, once it starts to thaw out, they start thinking about all the road construction and their brains go haywire.

Posted by: jmu_capsgirl | April 10, 2008 2:01 PM | Report abuse

If the Ovie and the Caps ended up playing Montreal in the playoffs, all of Canada might spontaneouly combust.

I think Calgary is more Cinderella than Montreal. And they played really well yesterday, it was fun to watch.

Posted by: mauree | April 10, 2008 2:06 PM | Report abuse

@ JMU

Ive read and listened to Flyers interviews the last week and none of them are taking the Caps lightly or just focusing on 1 guy.

They know what they are up against. I guess what I am trying to say is that everyone gets excited because the yoyos on tv think the caps will win the series but they only focus on 1 person. Their coach already said they wont shadow him with 1 guy, its going to be a team checking effort, so there is going to be no putting 2 guys on OV.

If they paid more attention to the Flyers they would see that it is a team that can score often and can beat you physically.

Nobody gives Biron credit. He and Huet are around the same age, Biron has more NHL experience but Huet has 6 games of playoff experience. Biron has at least been on the bench for a ton of playoff games and knows what the atmosphere is like

They are two goalies who have similar styles and can put up big numbers. Everyone thinks goal tending will decide the series but really I dont think that is going to be much of a factor. Huet has been great down the stretch but is 2-4 in playoffs and doesnt handle D breakdowns well.

For some people around here to say the caps are going to manhandle the flyers because they are faster and have a 65 goal scorer, we forget that we have only seen Philly 4 times..WAY back in Feb was the last. They are a team that has been much better since the last time they played.

A lot of people will be setting themselves up for disappointment and wondering how a team like Philly could beat the high flying caps..well, its not a surprise, they are a playoff team for a reason.

Im trying to stay real here, its going to be a brutally tough series and the longer it goes, advantage philly.

Posted by: Tommmy | April 10, 2008 2:06 PM | Report abuse

If I could hazard a guess, I would say that they think Montreal is the Cinderella team because they are the only Canadian team with a chance to bring home the Cup.

And the Penguins of course are the "Cinder-fella" team, because, well, I think we all know...

Posted by: Baildog | April 10, 2008 2:07 PM | Report abuse

Haha, do you know what part of Canada they were from? I'm guessing not Nova Scotia, since everybody there except my relatives are Pens fans. Probably not Ontario, although maybe, since their teams aren't doing real hot. Alberta, no, they'd be proud Flames fans. Definitely not BC. They're proud of their Canucks. Quebecois tend to avoid traveling outside of francophone areas. Newfoundland would explain a lot. Hmmmm...

@ Dave, You want to see combustion? Pens-Habs for the EC finals. The rest of Canada would try to get Nova Scotia to secede. Thankfully, we're safe, since both of them won't make it by way of the Caps.

Posted by: jmu_capsgirl | April 10, 2008 2:12 PM | Report abuse

Oh, I agree completely Tommmy. I don't think the Flyers are underestimating us. But a lot of the talking heads do. I'm certainly not underestimating the Flyers. As much as I would love to see a Caps sweep, I know the odds of it happening are not good. But I do think we can win the series. This is going to sound really cliche, but as long as we dictate the tempo of the games, I think we can do really well against the Flyers.

29 Hours to Go!!!

Let's go Caps!

Posted by: jmu_capsgirl | April 10, 2008 2:18 PM | Report abuse

Dictating the tempo is true of either team. The one that does..wins.

The Flyers are neither run and gun or trap. They are a good forechecking team that forces turnovers in the neutral zone and their own blue line

You beat it by not making an entry pass into the zone like the caps love to do. You dump and grind it out in the corner.

Posted by: Tommmy | April 10, 2008 2:24 PM | Report abuse

So, on Friday, do the caps change tactics or style of play at all because this is playoff hockey? Do we become more defensive minded at all? Or does BB simply say -- go get 'em boys, we've been white hot with what we've been doing so don't mess with it. Many talking heads think that BB's system is not built for championships (although there's a Calder Cup that might say otherwise).

I, for one, say don't change anything until we have to.

@ Tommmy and jmu_capsgirl:

In the end, whether the Flyers fear us or we fear them, the Caps will win. I have no doubts.

We need to start with the positives only, no negativety entries on this blog. Normally I say that the day of the game, but the playoffs are different.

Not to open the Olie bashing/support debate again, but I am sure you have noticed if the series goes 7 games, the final game is the day after Game 6. Do you play Huet for both or have Olie start one? I think you need Huet in a Game 7, but would you risk it to win it during Game 6. I guess it comes down to are you trying to win the series in Game 6 or trying to stay alive.

Just a topic for thought.

GREAT news about Morrison. Greenie was probably happy to hear that.

I'd just as soon have Emmy in there ahead of Schultz anyway. I think he's really stepped it up since the deadline.

And about Clark, I don't think his return (if it were to ever actually happen) would affect the chemistry.

The best thing about Clark is that he can play on Any line. He would end up taking a sweater away from Gordon probably, but either way, if he were to come back this team would become might dangerous.

Come on up to Philly, people!! I live up here and ALWAYS go to Caps vs. Flyers games. I will be there for Games 3 and 4.

Just don't be obnoxious and you won't get much more than the usual ribbing. i.e. 'Caps suck!', 'Sit down!'

So, I have my office window open and I hear cars honking a little up the street. And, I think man, that sounds like a Let's Go Capitals honk. The cars get closer. I look outside my window and see a convertible with Slapshot standing in the back along with 2 people in Caps jerseys with their face painted red holding a giant Caps banner. A car behind them was also filled with people in jerseys. Of course I yelled a very loud Let's Go Caps out my window. How cool!

Tomorrow can't get here soon eough.

I posted this in the other thread from today too...

"Sorry if this was already posted in another thread, but I didn't see it... from ESPN. All 3 guys are giving us fans, and the RED-OUT, mad props... keep it loud and proud in DC!!!!!!!!"

Question 5. Which arena will have the most electricity in the first round?

Burnside: It's hard to believe I'm writing this, but the Verizon Center in Washington.

Hradek: The Bell Centre just ain't the Forum, but the place will be nuts when the Habs take the ice to face the Bruins. The atmosphere will be nuclear! The Verizon Center in D.C. should be jumping, too.

Melrose: The Shark Tank. It's the loudest building in the NHL. All of the first-round arenas will be great; Washington will be unbelievable. But with all of the optimism and the team's strong finish to the regular season, San Jose will be rockin'.

A couple comments on the bars to watch the games:

Front page - unfortunately I went there during the NCAA's and they only had the game on two small tv's...but they do love the caps. Crowd is 20s-low 30's. Good service. Sometimes smokey.

Bugsy's - too smokey and small for me. older crowd though and definitely hockey.

I just went to the Green Turtle connected to verizon last sat night. I didnt have tickets to the game, but in my very long history of watching caps games, it blew me away. EVERY TV was set to the caps. EVERY person was there specifically for that reason. Sound was turned up. The fans came in between periods. No smoking inside.

Oh, and Mr Days in arlington has pretty much not delivered over the years. Usually the caps games are an afterthought.

Carpool in Arlington will have it on at least a few tvs, and w/the great weather, thats a choice spot since they have the huge doors open to the patio.

24.5 hrs! Ill be there.
