Some interesting measurement date that I saw through a link on Japers.

Here is the link: http://www.pensionplanpuppets.com/2010/10/15/1751273/sizing-up-the-nhl-by-height-weight-and-age

and the associated spreadsheet: https://spreadsheets.google.com/ccc?key=0AlBZxpXinYkCdGJHeHg1TGRwNG5SLUNiYlgyTHBwdEE&hl=en#gid=0

Observations and thoughts:

The Caps are collectively the tallest team in the league and one of the heaviest.

Our forwards are the tallest and heaviest.

Our D is above average in height and just slightly over league average in weight.

Tall and heavy usually spells slow.

Maybe that's part of why we look relatively lethargic compared to other teams at times.

The thing is that if you are tall and heavy, you need to take advantage of it by being a physcial team - use your physcial advantages to your benefit.

As is, the Caps are underly-physical in addition to potentially being slow, overall.

I've often see people claim that we are a speedy team and I've never gotten that impression. Team speed isn't just based on your 2 or 3 fastest guys.

In the new NHL, speed is certainly at a relative premium compared to the past.

It would seem intuitive to me that we need to sacrifice some of our underly-physical size (both height and weight) for speed going forward.

Also interesting is that the last 2 teams we lost to in the playoffs (Pitt and Mtl) have forwards that are both relatively short and light, overall, compared to the league average for forwards while we are the tallest and heaviest as mentioned above.

Outworked, outskated, outexecuted.

Ovechkin trying to cherry pick and unaware of his mark... shocking.

We look terrible. Can't establish a forecheck... can't stop the opposing forecheck... bad passes, sloppy execution all around.

That'll never change on a consistent basis under BB. Been saying that forever... Ovechkin won't reach his full potential and become a smarter, more complete player under this coach.

Pathetic display again.

What is that, 16 SOG now?

Ovechkin playing some blatantly irrespnosible hockey.

Whole team looks awful.

BB needs to have forwards coming back hard not just defensively but to receive passes.

This is patheitc.

This isn't how to play hockey at this level.

Posted by: tmac2yao | October 16, 2010 8:46 PM | Report abuse

Curious about something and I bet one of you guys will know this re: NHL roster rules. If Fahey was recalled, by my math that's a 24 player roster, assuming Green, Poti and Brads are still officially active despite not making the trip and King being the healthy scratch. I always thought the roster limit was 23, so is one of those guys officially on injured reserve? If not, is there an exception to the 23-man rule?

Posted by: JS26121820 | October 16, 2010 8:48 PM | Report abuse

That's the definition of OUTPLAYED. Wow. I've never seen this team get outplayed this BADLY. Amazing we're down just 1. Just way to careless/sloppy in our defensive zone. Guess BB made the correct decision going with the hot hand.

@rachel216

Where were you during the 3rd pd against the Islanders?

Don't let the scoreboard fool you.

Or the majority of the ATL game?

Or the 1st pd against NJ?

Ottawa was our only 60 min effort so far this season.

I guess this is their idea of developing the right habits early in the season.

Sure, the PK has been strong and Neuvirth has been great but we've been getting outworked and outexecuted regularly this season.

Posted by: tmac2yao | October 16, 2010 8:51 PM | Report abuse

The Bears are down 3-1 after 2 in their home opener and Nylander has one of the goals for Rochester.

Posted by: MReilly9 | October 16, 2010 8:51 PM | Report abuse

Neuvy can't do it all by himself. He also seems to get beat stick side high when he goes down too early. BB better be given the boys the riot act or this will be a long night. Geez...

And I agree, we've been outworked so far, and once again our D is leaving Neuvy out to dry.

Posted by: BlondeCapsFan | October 16, 2010 8:53 PM | Report abuse

I'm losing faith in Boudreau.

I lost faith in McPhee a long time ago.

I almost hope the stuff we've seen early this season persists and we have to make some drastic changes. I don't care about the record. We're going nowhere when it matters with this style of hockey.

Posted by: tmac2yao | October 16, 2010 8:54 PM | Report abuse

they should just forfeit - no sense in playing the last 2 periods - it would save a load of grief in here

Posted by: Capt_Kirk_in_AZ | October 16, 2010 8:55 PM | Report abuse

Why would Cap'n Ovechkin ever give consistent effort defensively when this coach is too soft on him and doesn't hold him accountable?

Skill players on down need to be responsible for playing a total game, including doing the "not fun" stuff like backchecking and coming back to receive passes. Stretch passes don't work all the time and scoring goals is only part of the game.

I'm assuming you didn't go to the Isles game then.

We won but...

Posted by: tmac2yao | October 16, 2010 9:24 PM | Report abuse

the problem is is that we are predictable. we believe our own hype and we have no TEAM work ethic. we've been out-worked in almost every game this year.

as most people said, we did not get better over the off season unfortunately we did take a step back. You can't expect two rookie defenseman to come in and take over for a veteran presence no matter how well they played in the playoffs.

the main thing is our work ethic, especially from our forwards with helping out in the defensive zone.

i hope that things get better soon. i know it's going to be very hard to live up to last year but you would've hoped we learned something from past failures.

come on boys, get those wheels churning. skating with intention will create opportunities.

Posted by: natresgroup | October 16, 2010 9:28 PM | Report abuse

tmac: actually I was at that game, and I disappointed then as well. But so far, I think this game is worse than that one was (with the exception of Neuvy).

Posted by: BlondeCapsFan | October 16, 2010 9:28 PM | Report abuse

And there's the frustration.

Use the physicality to win board battles instead.

We're getting schooled, coaches on down.

Have no fear, I finally arrived. Good things will start to happen. Cstanton1 hasnt been posting...wtf?

Posted by: SeminAllOverTheIce | October 16, 2010 9:31 PM | Report abuse

Not to mention, we have UFC 120 to keep us busy during intermission.

BTW, people keep saying Neuvy is the only positive so far...I think 3rd line is playing pretty damn well.

Posted by: SeminAllOverTheIce | October 16, 2010 9:35 PM | Report abuse

@natesgroup

You nailed it.

Work ethic is a big part of it. It's not the only issue but it's one of the biggest.

In the salary cap era, there is a lot more parity between the top and bottom teams.

Each season, there will be risers and fallers.

Roster contruction and the role of the GM is more crucial than ever. We had Backstrom getting underpaid last season but that's no longer the case. We also failed to address other issues adequately, including possibly coaching. BB's been coached out of his pants in every playoff series he's been in. McPhee will get a chance to make changes by the deadline but there was no reason to sit on his hands in the offseason. His logic for not making change was not sound but then again, we're talking about McPhee.

Posted by: tmac2yao | October 16, 2010 9:37 PM | Report abuse

The 3rd line is the best line tonight for sure but they're only playing well relative to our other lines... not the opposing team.

Posted by: tmac2yao | October 16, 2010 9:38 PM | Report abuse

When you look at the persistent issues we've seen with this team throughout the ups and downs of the last few season, I don't know how you can't question Boudreau as much as McPhee.

It's just sickeningly obvious that our players lack both work ethic and discipline... discipline in terms of doing the little things that make you a complete hockey team... just watch the little things that so many of our opponents to do that are rare or nonexistent on our team... from their work ethic along the boards to the way their forwards support the defense to the way they position themselves on the ice... you have to wonder what BB is teaching (or not teaching) this team.

Posted by: tmac2yao | October 16, 2010 9:43 PM | Report abuse

BB can't motivate his team when they need to be motivated. Forget the 60 min efforts. You'll be lucky to see that in a win, much less a game AFTER a win or two.

I'll tell you again. The caps r very predictable in their efforts. An overwhelming amount of time, their best games are coming off a loss or a bunch of losses. As they start to then win, their efforts start going downhill until they start losing again.

After the Isles game, it should've been a wakeup call that they pulled out a game they probably didn't deserve to win. Golden opp for Bruce to point that out to his guys so they wouldn't have a lackluster showing v Nashville. They had plenty of warning they needed a good effort tonight. But here you go again.

and this will KEEP happening. Because its BEEN happening.

Hopefully we see a 20 min effort tonight because at this point, its as much as you can hope for.

Also, our defensive depth is a joke.

Schultz had 5 steps on the forwards right off the 3rd pd faceoff and the 2 forechecking forwards ended up with the puck.

Posted by: tmac2yao | October 16, 2010 9:52 PM | Report abuse

If you were just a hockey fan, without any allegiance to a particular team, the Caps would not be the best team to watch on any given night because their efforts are so up and down. You'd want to watch the Pens or the Leafs or a team that is high energy all the time whether they win or lose. Too many Caps games are snoozers. They've had one great game effort and that was Ottawa. so about one in 5 or 6 games you'll get 18 skatesr playing together as a cohesive engaged unit.

Chimmy ain't grading real well in this game either. I'll take Tootoo over him.

It will be interesting to see what midseason moves this team makes. Because I feel their record will be subpar compared to last yr and there'll be some panic that sets in. McPhee and Bruce can only make up so many excuses to explain the postseason. If they have a subpar reg season to boot, those guys will feel some heat.

I just don't want to see guys like Fehr traded just because we have some depth on the wing.

Some people have this false belief that something magical is going to happen to this franchise because of all the hype.

Until they become a more disciplined, complete team, we're just going to be the Phx Suns of the NHL. You have to do all the little things to be truly successful and that starts with coaches teaching those things.

Agreed about our postseason posts. Having a complete team with all the positions strong is only the beginning. So, so many other intangables have to go right as well as luck play into hoisting The Cup. Until we have just our basic needs completely shored up, The Cup will still be that elusive goal.

i beg to differ. They came back enough times last yr that it proved to them they don't need to put in 60 min efforts, or even 50 min efforts. And then predictably, it caught up to them.

Its when they are unable to come back late in games that they'll get the msg and start putting the work in EARLIER.

Coming back late in this game will again cause them to ignore what put them in a hole to begin with. Is that what you want? Because I think that would be a little short-sighted. I'd rather they lose a few games, get the msg, then start playing the right way before its too late.

Ok, so far we've managed around 15 mins of decent hockey with Neuvey standing on his head. No odd man breaks and we have a chance.

@Cstanton

He's playing pretty well. Skating hard, getting in faces, etc.

The Caps, no the have looked dead for 2 periods and thanks to a defib in the 2nd INT, they are showing life. But nooooo no way you could say anything about that. Only highlight the negative from earlier.

And of course you would as me to bite you, being how you love to be miserable, its obvious you like the rough stuff as well.

The Caps suck it up for the 1st two, then predictably turn it on. Big whoopee. Teams who continue to play 20 mins of good hockey don't advance very far. In case you haven't been paying attention.

Actually...by definition, yes it does. 0-2 to 2-2 = erasing the piss poor efforts. Now, does that mean they learned their lesson or that their 1st 2 periods of play shouldnt be scrutinized and broken down to figure out what went wrong...of course not, the problem of a full 60 minutes still exists.

But, you're just lost in the grand scheme. Lost. They go to Nashville against a playoff team, who are quite good, and come from behind to win and it's nothing more than "they suck", "they don't play hard", "my dick hurts"...give it a rest, seriously. Give it a rest.

Interesting note...we were only outshot in te 1st. not saying we played well by a long shot...but really...can't fault BB for this one...GMGM has to build up the D more b/c injuries will happen and we can' have that kind of defensive lineup. Had Poti and green played we would have won this game in regulation.

Posted by: capscoach | October 16, 2010 10:44 PM | Report abuse

Man, some people on here would still complain if we won game 7 in the stanley cup finals after playing poorly the first two periods.

I know its frustrating they played like crap the first two periods but they found a way to win. I know it would be nice if they played a full 60 minutes every game this year but that aint going to happen, and if it did we would be close to going 82-0.

On another note how about the PK still being perfect? And should we keep playing Neuvy while he is playing lights out or get Varly in there? I think we should stay with the hot hand, but I have a feeling BB will want to get his boy Varly in there.

The Caps have played exactly 1 game in 5 this season where they outworked the opposing team for even half of the game.

It's not like we don't have a long history and track record with roughly this same GM, coach and set of players.

More than anything, I was hoping to see a commitment to working harder and smarter early this year. I guess that was too much to expect from roughly the same group and coach and GM.

I'd rather by 1-4 right now but building the right habits that would help us in the long run.

If they play the kind of hockey that they played against Ottawa but lose the next 5 games, I'd be happier than 5 games like we saw tonight and against the Islanders.

I'm dead serious. I think that would be a better sign for the long term.

On a positive note the PP got two goals tonight and the PK was perfect. A lot of good effort on the PK and the fact that the Preds had 4 1st period PPs contributed to the Caps getting off to a slow start tonight.

My bad, just saw steve and typed wrong userid.

Bottomline on tonights game...

Team looked terrible for 2 periods, and being the 2nd game in a row that we played more crappy hockey than solid hockey, scares people.

Neuvy was awesome.

Chimchim played well (which is the real reason cstanton was irate as he wants to add him to the same hate list as GMGM, BB, Flash and Semin).

Semin scores which only further angered the great and powerful oz (aka cstanton).

Flash scored, ditto comments about Semin (even though I agree on his stance on Flash).

But we won. So be happy for the win/points, but only smile half cheeked as we do have some work to do yet. Hopefully the boys get run hard at practice for lesson learning. :)

I thought Schultz had his worst game of the season tonight.

I really do wonder if this team needs an injection of speed. We're the tallest and one of the heaviest teams in the league.

I think that even when we're trying hard sometimes that quicker teams just dominate the open ice were their greater speed.

That may be one of the reasons we struggle as team both applying and stopping forechecks.

There is a lack of physicality and grit along the boards but I think the lack of speed, overall, is an issue as well.

back at the top of the league - right where they belong

Posted by: Capt_Kirk_in_AZ | October 16, 2010 11:08 PM | Report abuse

The Caps slow start also contributed to the 4 1st pd PPs.

When you are getting outworked and losing battles along the boards, penalties tend to be a result.

Laich's man beat him to space on the 1st one.

Schultz got worked over on the boards by a midget on the 2nd one and tripped him up out of desperation.

Johansson's man got ahead of him and was going in on an odd-man rush.

Can't recall Carlson's hooking but I'm guessing it was once again due to Nashville buzzing all over our defense.

Posted by: tmac2yao | October 16, 2010 11:09 PM | Report abuse

I think we played like crap b/c we were missing half our D! Alzner looked decent, but the D's inability to clear the zone led to the offense having no time on O...lets not forget we spent almost HALF the first period on the PK...which is why the Preds had so many shots (of course we shouldn't have taken so many penalties in the first place)

Posted by: capscoach | October 16, 2010 11:09 PM | Report abuse

I am a bit amazed that people are upset with this win. The Preds came out flying, and without Green the Caps were unable to get the puck out of their own end of the ice. Neuvy really held the fort. Things began to turn in the second period, and the Caps wore the Preds down in the third. Under the circumstances, with the truly weak defensive corps the Caps put on the ice, this was a great win.

Posted by: zmega | October 16, 2010 11:11 PM | Report abuse

@capscoach

Half the reason our defense gets pinned in it's own end is because the forwards don't backcheck and do work in that zone on a consistent basis.

I'm not sure if it's BB's system or he just doesn't do enough to stress the importance of defense - or both.

Especially when your defense is rattled with injuries, the forwards should be even more committed to helping out.

Ovechkin lost track of Weber about 5 times alone.

He's not the only one but BB either encourages our forwards to hang high and leave our defensemen to fend for themselves or he just doesn't hold them accountable for being cherry pickers.

Posted by: tmac2yao | October 16, 2010 11:15 PM | Report abuse

this was a great win.

Posted by: zmega | October 16, 2010 11:11 PM

careful - i'm not sure your allowed to say this - as the caps were outplayed and should not have (or to some: did not deserve to) won

Posted by: Capt_Kirk_in_AZ | October 16, 2010 11:17 PM | Report abuse

To stress that point, think about the 3rd period of the last game against the Isles or about 50 other examples in the last couple of years when all our D were healthy.

Getting pinned in our own end by opposing forechecks is nothing new for this team and I think it's caused by a number of factors, including coaching, forwards not backchecking and being in position in their own end and inadequate defensemen among other things.

Posted by: tmac2yao | October 16, 2010 11:18 PM | Report abuse

Well, that was a weird one. Neuvy kept the Caps in it all game really but especially the first period. I'm not sure it was a lack of effort that made the Caps play badly that first period (you could see how excited they were to win it at the end). Could it just be that they were unsure of themselves because of all the recent personnel changes and they needed some time to regain confidence in one another? I think you have to give them credit for coming back from 2 goals down against a playoff caliber team. It showed character.

Posted by: FloridaCapsFan | October 16, 2010 11:19 PM | Report abuse

@zmega

careful talking like that...cstanton will attack you for such talk...b/c he is hockey's version of Moses and only he holds the correct opnions or talks.

I totally agree with you! They did fine with the D they had...we were only out shot in the 1st (badly I give you), and while I won't want to watch this game again, I was not expecting to win in the first place so I will not complain.

Posted by: SeminAllOverTheIce | October 16, 2010 11:24 PM | Report abuse

@tmac

I notices Ovie was floating around a lot tonight...I think when the team is struggling like they did he feels obligated to score and starts playing a little individually...that is something that BB does need to adress with him. Overall I think Ovie has played well this past week. He hasn't had a lot of help either from Backstrom and even Knuble at times

Posted by: capscoach | October 16, 2010 11:25 PM | Report abuse

What do you think we could get for Varlamov?

Posted by: underpants2 | October 16, 2010 11:27 PM | Report abuse

Bottom line: it seems clear to me that BB doesn't address the little things enough and quite possibly doesn't teach a responible brand of hockey.

These little things become ingrained bad habits that bite you in a playoff atmosphere where skill is less of a differentiator.

When skill becomes more of a level playing field, work ethic and disciplined hockey becomes the differentiator.

Had the Caps advanced further in any of the recent playoffs, they would have run into some other team that outworked and played smarter than them.

Until the Caps are doing the right things on a regular basis, we'll be a team of untapped potential.

Working harder along the boards, doing the right things as a 5-man unit in all 3 zones, being in the right position on the ice (particularly forwards) are just some of the litte things that escape this team, probably due to poor coaching.

You can't develop these habits at the end of the season so it has to start now.

Despite the 4-1 record, I don't see a lot of good signs and I think you have to question both what Boudreau is (and isn't) teaching these guys as well as McPhee's ability to build a balanced roster with enough hard-working, gritty types... both up front and on defense.

Posted by: tmac2yao | October 16, 2010 11:32 PM | Report abuse

that is something that BB does need to adress with him.

Posted by: capscoach | October 16, 2010 11:25 PM |

When though?

How many years has Boudreau been here?

You think an elite coach like Scotty Bowman would let Ovechkin get away with that crap on a nearly nightly basis?

I've said it for years now that Ovechkin will not take the next step toward becoming a smarter, more complete player with a coach who can't get him to do more of the "not fun" stuff that it takes to get to that level.

Athleticism, skill, work ethic, hockey IQ...

Those are my 4 components to a hockey player.

Ovechkin has 3 of those things at an elite level. A guy like Crosby has all 4, partly because of his wiring and partly because he plays in an environment where those things are demanded of him.

Ovechkin will continue to be an incomplete player under BB and that goes for a lot of players.

It's cliche but I think Ovechkin needs a coach to do for him what Bowman did for Yzerman and many others who didn't understand how to play a total game.

BB ain't that guy.

This is a classy site. Don't slum it up with foul language. Cstanton knows hockey. Many of us respect his opinion. Cstanton knows what it takes to win a cUp. That was the kind of effort I would expect from a team that came out sleep walking in an elimination game in their own building (Game 5, last year)

That was a piss poor effort against a poor team (don't care they made the playoffs).

I know we're only single digits into the season. But, you would think that a bunch of guys who are playing "angry" would play "angry". I just don't see the changes that need to be made (a team defense approach) are being addressed.

The entire league thinks the Caps must adapt their style to win 16 playoff games. It's not happening. Those big shots from the blue line don't go in in the playoffs. Somebody throws their body down, like the entire Habs team did last year.

As usual, we got outhustled. You can't get outhustled in the playoffs. There were 6 or 7 guys that were mailing it in until BB dumped on 'em in the period break. This stuff just doesn't get me excited about he playoffs. In fact, I'm worried. It's garbage hockey !!!!!!!!!!!

@tmac2yao

Man you said it! That's this team in a nutshell.

He can do it without insulting people, Hunter.

I apologize for my language, but one or two old Anglo-Saxon words are not worse than the venom he spews, particularly the stuff he hurled at capscoach tonight. That is far less classy, to my mind, and I abhor an internet bully and reserve my right to get in his or her grill.

Again, I happen to agree with much of what he (and tmac and you) happens to say, even if I don't love reading my own writing so much.

Just to be clear, it's a certain degree of hockey IQ that I think he's missing. It's not at an elite level like those other traits.

I believe that he has the work ethic and ability to be a complete two-way player if a coach comes along that can get it out of him.

As of now, he just seems to neglect parts of the game and gets away with it.

Everyone understands we are part of the same fan base, and on the internet, right?

I agree with you. I think Cstanton is just boiling over with frustration, because much of us see a highly talented team that can't win the cUp. Those old Mario L., Yzerman, Mike Bossy, Scott Steven's cUp teams never played like this on a weekly basis. Atlanta really made us look bad last week. This win is almost a negative.

You think you would be happier with an OT win. Watching hockey is supposed to be entertainment. The team you were rooting for (or are supposedly rooting for) won in exciting fashion. It was an entertaining game with a good ending. Try to smile.

Also, if anyone has actually watched the Pens at all the past few regular seasons they would clearly know that they sleepwalk through many regular season games.

Most of us are frustrated to one degree or another. I can't name one true Pollyanna who comments here regularly.

It doesn't take a hockey expert to see the faults in this team. Some people just find fault to different degrees or express them in different ways. One shouldn't fear getting attacked personally just because one expresses a greater degree of optimism (lesser degree of pessimism?) or sees a strength where another does not.

Very few here hurl personal insults or threaten violence towards another for daring to express a different opinion. THAT'S what makes an internet site "unclassy" and uncivil, to my mind. Just OMO.

Other things to note.

Neuvy has been great (very important for playoffs).

The Caps PK has been perfect through 5 games (very important for playoffs).

The Caps have allowed 2 goals or less for four consecutive games.

Schultz has logged a ton of ice time and has yet to be on the ice for a goal scored against.

Green has looked great so far this season when not hurt.

The Caps beat a very good Nashville team without their two best puck moving defenseman (probably the main reason for the sloppy play).

I think some of us are holding the team to impossible standards. Last time I checked, the Hawks got outplayed in a few periods last year, and even lost a few games. The Caps won tonight on the road with a depleted roster against a pretty good team that was clearly fired up to play. The glass is more than half full. Enjoy.

Hunter: You support cstanton1 because he thinks just like you.

Interesting that you use the Habs in the playoffs as an example because they got outplayed for 3 periods a game against us. They were outshot by a rediculous amount, O zone time for them was a joke, but they capitalized on their few chances and won the series.

The Caps actually controlled the last 15 minutes of the game, ended up closing the shot gap down to 5, won in OT, but their win is unacceptable. For those that want to gloat about being right about the Caps losing give teams props when the Caps lose a game by blowing a lead but refuse to give the Caps any credit when they do it.

Breakouts begin with defense, our defense tonight was inexperienced to say the least.

Hey tmac, getting pinned in your zone isn't the result of forwards not backchecking. Odd man rushes are the result of forwards not backchecking. If you are pinned in your zone you are not backchecking anymore. If you want to criticize the effort at least keep things straight.

What are people like tmac, hunter, cstanton, and the rest that are predicting an early exit going to do if the Capitals have a nice run, or GOD forbid, win the Cup. Cstanton1 was in a great mood when the Caps were losing a literally flipped out beginning with the Flash goal. There is no shame in a goaltender keeping a team in a game so they can steal it. The Devils have been doing it since Brodeur came on the scene. This year, Brodeur is looking old and the Devils are struggling terribly. His only win is an OT 1-0 shutout. Pretty sad that a goaltender has to put a zero on the board to have a chance to win.

The Crosby Pens do sleepwalk through games.(one cUp) I've enjoyed many Cap's victories over the past 35 years. However, I want to win a cUp in my lifetime. These guys like Ovi, Semin, Laich, Green and Backy will get hurt. They'll get old. We'll start to lose them to the salary cap. I sat in my seats at the old Cap center and watched how relentless the old Iles were in our building. LL in jersey pieced togeather teams that just grabbed you by the throat, and didn't let go.
Mario forced everyone on the Pens to play at a high level nightly (at least in our building, so it seems.)

I've spent many hours watching these cUp winners play in my team's building. It was difficult to watch. We did not have the talent. My team is full of talent now, but they don't play like the repeat cUp winners I secretly admired. Every game seemed like street fight.

We don't street fight.

The Preds are a team many fans wish the Caps would emulate. Aggressive forecheck, good D, hard hitting, make simple plays, good along the boards, hardworking, etc and they lost to a team that slept through the first 50 minutes. If the Preds were a little more creative, they would have buried the Caps in the first. I don't know how many times Neuvy was in position at least 15 seconds before a shot was taken because he knew exactly what to expect. The few times the Preds could have scored easily the pass was too strong and missed the mark. Point being, replacing finesse with grit, skill with hard work, and size with speed isn't going to guarantee a parade down Constitution Ave.

Get the right mix of both = cUp

Posted by: Hunterforcoach | October 17, 2010 1:24 AM | Report abuse

Bingo, Hunter. If only we could all agree on what that mix would be, and then get GMGM to agree with us, and THEN discover that we were right!

@fanohock1

Stop all the "Marty" nonsense. I've unfortunately had to watch hundreds of hours of Devils hockey. When those guys came into our building it was a rough night EVERYTIME we played them. Neidermeyer, Stevens, Daneyko, Rafalski, Elias, Verbeek never "mailed in" a game I watched or attended. They're true champions.

This Caps team is fun to watch, but they do not have men that play with the same drive and determination as the Devils I mentioned. LL is blowing smoke at GMGM with all the compliments. LL knows we don't have a roster full of gutsy, "take no prisoners" cUp carrying guys like Stevens, Rafalski and Neidermeyer.

Yea, we beat the Preds. We stunk for the second time in two weeks against an average foe. A real contender would have spanked these guys early, and told them, "you're still three great players away from thinking about the cUp. This is our time."

When are we going to start playing like a team that wants to win the cUp ? The week before the playoffs ? Will we start to play team defense, or golf early ? Scott Stevens was a BEAST !!!!!!!!!!!
