Neuvirth Update

Okay, official word here at VC is that Michal Neuvirth will not make it to Washington tonight. I'll have more when the situation becomes more clear.

I am offically confused

Posted by: HBFan | December 12, 2008 4:40 PM | Report abuse

Now I'm even more confused. If Theodore is injured and I really don't believe BJ is 100% healthy, who's the backup?

Posted by: elicea | December 12, 2008 4:40 PM | Report abuse

Why do I feel like I'm in Clue?

Neuvirth, in the locker room, with a candlestick.

Posted by: Jordana20 | December 12, 2008 4:41 PM | Report abuse

repost -- could it finally be jt and nylander to chicago for huet or khabby and someone/draft pick??? i just can't see Chicago trading khabby. of course, i would have never guessed they'd sign huet

Posted by: JIMALLCAPS | December 12, 2008 4:41 PM | Report abuse

Just gets crazier and crazier. Maybe we can suit up feds as a goalie, he plays everything else

Posted by: superpaqman | December 12, 2008 4:42 PM | Report abuse

This is all an elaborate ruse to get Brett "Stretch" Leonhardt on the NHL roster and in the lineup for one game.

Posted by: cstoneno37 | December 12, 2008 4:42 PM | Report abuse

did jt leave or was he called off the ice by gmgm (please, please, please let it be a trade)

Posted by: JIMALLCAPS | December 12, 2008 4:43 PM | Report abuse

So he's not gonna be in the lineup but the question still remains as to why he is coming in the first place! I feel like the more answers we get, the more questions we have - typical in Caps land I guess.

Posted by: ShariLeigh131 | December 12, 2008 4:43 PM | Report abuse

wouldn't it be a riot if somehow through this trade we got huet back?

Posted by: jamebow | December 12, 2008 4:43 PM | Report abuse

heavens to betsy

Posted by: _stevo | December 12, 2008 4:44 PM | Report abuse

So, which of our do it all men is the backup? Fedorov or Laich?

Posted by: Ames00 | December 12, 2008 4:45 PM | Report abuse

At this juncture it looks like the next ten-bell save he makes could cost us the services of "B-Johnny-Good" for several games...scary.

Let's just pray for the D to be smart & strong, so that he (BJ1) won't have to engage in such acrobatics.

AΩ on ice in skivvies....ROTGDFLMMFAO.

MASS HYSTERIA is back.

All is right with the world.

Posted by: ThisGuy | December 12, 2008 4:46 PM | Report abuse

IIRC, hasn't Poti played goalie in the past?

Posted by: panic13 | December 12, 2008 4:47 PM | Report abuse

i think i recall tarik saying he played goalie back in the day. tarik, what do you say, the boys need you?

Posted by: dcsportsfan1 | December 12, 2008 4:48 PM | Report abuse

I seem to remember Ovi making a "glove save" last year, when Caps' pulled [I think] Kolzig out, last seaosn. ;)

Posted by: elicea | December 12, 2008 4:49 PM | Report abuse

This doesnt make sense. Why him over Varlamov? Unless the whole reasoning behind not being able to loan him to an AHL team if we call up Varlamov.

Do we want Huet in a trade? I dont. he isnt playing all that well either. I would rather we have Johnson and Varlamov the rest of the season.

Posted by: graig82 | December 12, 2008 4:51 PM | Report abuse

I wasnt planning on being at the game tonight, but I can swing by the Hockey store and buy some pads and be there in time to be the backup if needed...

I like how it went from injury speculation (johnnie or theo) to automatic trade speculation theo/nyls to chicago. To throw another log on the fire, did anyone else notice that nyls has only been getting 10-15 min. of ice time since his healthy scratch and only 12 min. last night?...

Posted by: ThatGuy2 | December 12, 2008 4:51 PM | Report abuse

huet for JT --any day of the week, played great last year and has decent numbers this year 2.56 gaa and .907, much better than JT (3.08 & .888)

Da 'hawks have a few nice blueliners they can add in a trade for the Nylander part

Posted by: JIMALLCAPS | December 12, 2008 4:51 PM | Report abuse

Maybe Theo isn't hurt, just sick. There is some sort of stomach thing going around. He could sit in the locker room and then get ready in hurry if something happens to Johnny. Just hope the rest of the team doesn't catch any germs. :(

Posted by: tess2201 | December 12, 2008 4:51 PM | Report abuse

I could make it to the Verizon Center if I left now, I played some Junior hockey as a goalie. I make no promises, but a good paycheck and I'll stop pucks if they need me!

Posted by: TheVampireCorndog | December 12, 2008 4:52 PM | Report abuse

Wow! This mean excitements on ice, no.

We Trade for new Goaltender and Theodore and Nielander is no more to play for us.

Is this good news for Capital hockey team or not so good a thing?

Please pardon grammar.

Posted by: SeaScorpion | December 12, 2008 4:53 PM | Report abuse

Varmalov is not ready yet -- see today's chat. I've seen Varm twice in Choco-town. He's awesome there, but it's still the AHL. He needs some seasoning yet for the NHL and gain some weight. The boy is a stick. OK, a stick with a wicked glove hand and catlike reflexes.

You have discovered exactly what I was talking about earlier. IT'S TRUE! The web designer is INDEED dressing for the caps tonight. I am being 100000% serious here. Tarik will update us on exactly what I'm talking about. Theo can't play...can't dress...got hurt somehow. It's "stretch"! His dream is coming true.

Posted by: redskins2448 | December 12, 2008 4:55 PM | Report abuse

Settle down people.. here's what probably happened. Johnson is hurt; not badly, but bad enough that he shouldn't be the back-up tonight.

Theodore will start.

Hershey is in Texas, so Neuwirth is the closest available back-up. He'll sit on the bench with plain vanilla pads.

If Neuvirth isn't in DC for game-time, I'm VERY confused.

Varlamov could have made it back for tomorrow's game.

I don't buy this:
And another reason why Neuvirth (as opposed to one of the two AHLers) is if they recall a Hershey guy, they can’t send Neuvirth to Hershey or they lose the ability to loan him to an AHL team, so this move doesn’t further screw Hershey for a guy who probably won’t even be sitting on the bench (knock wood).

Hershey fans will hate me - but the Caps don't care if they screw Hershey. Hershey's first responsibility is to be the farm system for the caps. Help the caps win the cup. That's it. Period.

I'm very confused...

Posted by: patrone | December 12, 2008 4:57 PM | Report abuse

As much as Huet was key for the run of last season, I don't want him back. He left the team for more money; and if we acquire him, with the deal he has signed, it could throw off GMGM's plans of bringing either Varlamov or Neuvirth up in a couple years.

Posted by: elicea | December 12, 2008 4:58 PM | Report abuse

Stretch was on PreCap with Vogs today. If he's dressing for the team tonight, he would have been getting his pre-game nap, not hamming it up on the webcast.

Posted by: tess2201 | December 12, 2008 4:58 PM | Report abuse

I prefer the trade option.

Makes my last hour at work more exciting, and we need to dump Nyles anyways!

Posted by: TheVampireCorndog | December 12, 2008 4:58 PM | Report abuse

I agree he may need a bit more seasoning, but to give him a couple starts in the NHL cant hurt. So instead of Varlamov who is playing very well in AHL you want Neurvith who is playing ok in the ECHL a lower level league?

Posted by: graig82 | December 12, 2008 4:59 PM | Report abuse

@redskins2448
I'm not sure how much of his "dream" it is, considering the groan he let out when Bruce announced to the media on Tuesday night that he would be in net for the next morning's practice. lol

Posted by: cstoneno37 | December 12, 2008 4:59 PM | Report abuse

With Johnny hurting (there were questions whether or not he'd even finish the B's game), it's not out of the question our back-up will see playing time tonight. This game is starting to look VERY interesting...

Posted by: jburksva | December 12, 2008 5:00 PM | Report abuse

@cstoneno37

Well.....I am for sure getting to the game as early as possible to see this warm up.

Posted by: redskins2448 | December 12, 2008 5:01 PM | Report abuse

I just got back from skating at Kettler. George was running around all over the place upstairs. One would think he should be at VC by now, right?

Just thought I'd throw some fuel on the fire.

Posted by: _jordan | December 12, 2008 5:04 PM | Report abuse

@ elicea -- Huet and Varmalov can rotate as Varm learns the NHL game. BJ is a free agent who can be cut if H & V work out. BJ's a good goalie, but is a career backup with health issues. Huet can always be traded later on if Varm and Neuv are the top two. Huet had great chemistry with the team. Most important, Nylander who does not fit BB's system and is eating up a lot of cap space, needs to go. Getting a defenseman for Nylander would be a coup.

Posted by: JIMALLCAPS | December 12, 2008 5:04 PM | Report abuse

Would Varlamov need to clear waivers to go back to Hershey?

Posted by: patrone | December 12, 2008 5:04 PM | Report abuse

1 We don't want Huet for 3 years at his inflated price
2 We don't want Kabi and can't afford the cap hit
3 Getting rid of MN would be great, give us room we need to do stuff, but we obviously don't want to assume a big salary that puts us back in the same position
4 Do you think there is anyone stupid enough to take Josie off our hands?

Posted by: majiksea | December 12, 2008 5:05 PM | Report abuse

Varm does not have to clear waivers, but he's in Texas

Posted by: JIMALLCAPS | December 12, 2008 5:06 PM | Report abuse

Ugh, I can't imagine wanting Huet back, despite the magic of the playoff run, I think he'd be poison in the locker room. He bleeped over the Caps by balking when they gave in to HIS demands. Khabibulin would be fine but definitely not Huet, despite some people's (Chief's) criticism of GMGM I don't think he'd do that.

Six players were missing at practice Friday as injuries mount on the Montreal Canadiens.

Goaltender Carey Price (flu), captain Saku Koivu (lower body), defencemen Mathieu Dandenault (broken arm) and Mike Komisarek (shoulder) and wingers Christopher Higgins (shoulder) and Georges Laraque (lower body) are all sidelined.

The Canadiens called up centre Ben Maxwell from AHL Hamilton and he will see his first NHL action Saturday night against the visiting Washington Capitals.

Koivu was injured during Montreal’s 3-1 loss to Tampa Bay on Thursday night.

An MRI exam will determine how long he will be out but coach Guy Carbonneau said he will miss at least the next two or three games.

Hamilton goalie Marc Denis is on standby in case Price is unable to dress for Saturday’s game.

We'd be screwing the development of our goalies if we brought Neuvirth there. You're right that the purpose of the farm teams is to develop players -- the goal eventually is to get Neuvirth to an AHL team so he can face some tougher competition. Sticking him on the Bears now screws everything because then we either keep 3 there, which is silly, or Neuvirth is forced to play out the season with the 'Rays, which clearly is not in his or the Caps' best interest.

Posted by: ThisGuy | December 12, 2008 5:10 PM | Report abuse

Even if Varlamov is in Texas why does it matter? Neuvirth is not gonna make it by tonight.... so either one could be there by tomorrow

Posted by: graig82 | December 12, 2008 5:10 PM | Report abuse

it was easier to call up Nuevirth from SC instead of calling up Varly in TX to DC, then to fly someone to TX to back up Hershey.

Posted by: HBFan | December 12, 2008 5:11 PM | Report abuse

@JIMALLCAPS

I can't quite overstate enough how bad an idea that is. One AHL'er and one not-quite an AHL'er platooning in goal?

And Huet? Seriously? Think before you speak. We are trying to cut salary, not add it. I'm not positive, but I think Huet's new contract is worth twice Nyles and BJ combined...

Posted by: patrone | December 12, 2008 5:11 PM | Report abuse

@ Majiksea -- Chicago needs to dump goalie salary. They can't afford both Huet and Khabby. JT is cheaper and has only this year and next.

I'd take Khabby in a heartbeat (7-1-4, 1 SO, 2.46, .923) -- compare those numbers to JT's (8-6-1, 1 SO, 3.08, .888). He stole a cup from Calgary in 2003-2004.

I'd also take Huet over JT any day of the week (see numbers above)

Moving Nylander for a cheaper defenseman is key for both teams. They need a center and we need a defenseman -- it can and will hopefully be done

Posted by: JIMALLCAPS | December 12, 2008 5:12 PM | Report abuse

Well they wanted someone there today and not tomorrow.

Posted by: HBFan | December 12, 2008 5:13 PM | Report abuse

Graig82,

Maybe they thought he would get here in time for tonight and weather or flights made that impossible once he had been recalled?

Posted by: Jordana20 | December 12, 2008 5:13 PM | Report abuse

Nuevirth also played for the caps during preseason when Varly was hurt.

Posted by: HBFan | December 12, 2008 5:14 PM | Report abuse

@majiksea - doesnt Ottawa need a goalie and werent they talking to Chicago about Khabibulan or Huet? Perhaps its an ever exciting three team trade.

Posted by: ThatGuy2 | December 12, 2008 5:15 PM | Report abuse

@JIMALLCAPS

It's only been this season that BJ has had a nagging injury., and even with his injury he is outplaying Theodore (and Huet for that matter).

As for the cap space, I doubt Huet's cap hit will bode well with the team either. Nylander's cap hit is 4.875, while Huet's is 5.625.

Posted by: elicea | December 12, 2008 5:16 PM | Report abuse

We will not be trading for either Chicago goalie
