Is This It?

If you look at the entry below, in the comments section, there is a link to what could be the Capitals' new red, white and blue jersey.

I am currently working on a detailed story about everything that went into the new design. But I have not seen the finished product. (Only a dozen or so have). So I am not in a position to confirm or deny whether that is in fact the new jersey. The team will not confirm anything. I guess we'll have to wait and see on Friday.

Thoughts?

Thanks for the new thread, Tarik.

I'll repost my bellyache here. I assume you don't want us posting a link to the image and video?

1. I guess now I'm glad that the Caps never bothered to email me that I would need a ticket for Friday. Way to go new marketing team. I won't be in a rush to buy anything with this logo on it.

2. I really like orange. But what happened to red? I remember their were even rumblings of it being a darker red like the brick red of the Avs.

3. I'm fine with the darker blue, but would have preferred bright blue with a darker red. That would be sharp.

4. Regardless, that logo is weak. It's a tighter update of the original, but lame just the same.

5. The new alternate logo looks pretty cheesy too.

I guess I can just hope this grows on me, but it's pretty darn underwhelming.

Shmoo -- you can post whatever you want. I'm just going to hold back a bit since I cannot say with any certainty where that leak came from. But since it was out there and being discussed, I felt it was fair for me to mention it.

The orange is terrible and the logo... well... I bet a few undergraduate design students can come up with a better logo than that!

OK, thanks for the clearance, Clarence. Here's your vector, Victor:

(note the authenticity of the font used...very consistent with Caps website marketing)

This still from the video shows the shoulder alt logo (the W eagle):

For once I am agreeing 100% with Finn's pessimism.

I think this is the real deal. Caps haven't shot it down, which is telling enough. Also...who the heck is gonna fake that video?

Posted by: Shmoo | June 19, 2007 7:43 PM | Report abuse

Looks to me like the third jersey of the Islanders. If this is it, then the Caps made a huge mistake....ughhhhhh, what a hideously ugly look, and even worse color comb....yuck.

I don't buy that as the new Uni. The previews bits that have floated aroudn all had a deep red and blue. That thing is orange. Either than or the color balance on the picture is horrid. Guess we'll find out Friday.

Posted by: EircS | June 19, 2007 8:34 PM | Report abuse

The video and picture are probably poor duplications of the original. The Caps have been saying red, white and blue all along, and I don't think they are going to change their minds and go with white, blue and orange! Also, I can't believe no one is excited about the Caps going back to the old school traditional logo. Did anyone watch the Canucks series? Their old school unis were so simplistic, but a big hit. I'm not a bandwagon person, but throwbacks are the "it" thing in sports right now. Going back to a cleaner version of the old logo brings back days of Rod Langway, Mike Gartner, Dino Ciccerelli, Al Iafrate and Capital's tradition. I think it is a very exciting change. The black jersey is solid, but the white and blue jerseys are terrible! The Capitals have a very exciting future and it's a perfect time to blend the past with the present!

Posted by: Kevin | June 19, 2007 9:36 PM | Report abuse

It appears the video has been deleted due to a TOS violation.

From the stills, those colors indeed suck. Will all 30 teams be so unlucky.

Posted by: Bubba | June 19, 2007 10:04 PM | Report abuse

All the concepts I was able to see are horrible - they don't communicate passion, excitement, or CAPS style hockey.

Perhaps we should just adopt the Hershey Bears jersey. That design says hockey!

Posted by: Harry | June 19, 2007 10:11 PM | Report abuse

Why would the Caps come out and deny it?

1. It's free publicity. The buzz will just draw a few more people to focus on Friday.

2. If they officially deny this version, then it also opens the door to people creating more 'leaks' for them to officially deny

It won't be orange, like others have said, those images just have the color off. If they are even real.

Although I liked the basic design of the Caps' original red jersey (color, stars, normal bottom stripes - I hate all the newer wavy or angled stripes) I always thought the original logo was pretty lame.

If this is the new logo, it's far worse than the original.

I won't be buying any jerseys or caps if this is really it.

Caps to Adopt old Hartford Whalers Logo

In a twist of the Capitals new logo frenzy that has begun, the new logo to be sported on the red, white, and blue jersey will be that of the Hartford Whalers, without the Whale tail.

"We found it much easier just to put a W on there and with all the fuss over bringing back the Whalers, we decided to do it," said one Caps staffer sworn to secrecy.

The logo will be blue with the Capital building replacing that of the Whale tail.

Caps fans are expected to exclaim, "I knew we shared a minor league affiliate with them once, I didn't think we'd share their logo."

Carolina Hurricanes fans really don't care but those in Connecticut's capitol city are aghast. Quotes are not available because people simply don't know what to say.

This is so not the real thing.
Remember who owns this team (think, marketing genius).
Why would they build it up only to themselves leak it on their own website????
Please be rational.
If you suggest they are doing it to "gauge fan impressions", that would make no sense.
You don't gauge something unless there's some opportunity to change it if the feedback is bad. There is no chance for any changes here.
It certainly wasn't a mistake, so I have to believe this is the marketing department goofing with us... and doing a fine job by the likes of these comments!

I don't dislike the updated logo, but the execution of the entire jersey leaves a lot to be desired.

Anyone else think the puck looks like a saucer pass over the blade of the stick?

Posted by: Victor | June 20, 2007 9:11 AM | Report abuse

A) They could have made two versions and leaked the radical one just to see what people think.

B) More than 12 people have to have seen it. I dont know, what about all the people that actually made the jersey (Ted and GM didnt sew it in the basement). If you really wanted to be secret you could make a couple versions like in A) so that the manufacturers didnt know which was going to be used

C) The first two links don't work, and I can't tell if the third one is red or orange. Just think it is a bad image

I have mixed feelings.

I'm not a big fan of going back to the word "Capitals" as a logo. That being said, after looking at the color-corrected picture, I like this version of it better than the old version. It's good that they did away with all the red white and blue stars. Those made the old jerseys look way too busy. But, again, I really would have rather seen a real logo--preferably an eagle logo. I'm not a big fan of the dome logo, because as Tom Hanks said in the movie Big, "what's fun about a building?" But, honestly, I would have preferred that to this.

I really don't like the white vertical stripe down the side though. That part of the design makes no sense. I have to think that's a "new NHL" influenced element that will be dropped once the league comes to the realization that it is universally hated. I'd rather see white and blue stripes at the bottom of the jersey, the cuff of the sleeves and maybe small ones around the neck area...

Posted by: aybee | June 20, 2007 9:49 AM | Report abuse

1 - This is not a "lets leak one of our designs and see how people react" situation. If this had been leaked 4 or 5 months ago I'd say yes, but it's too close to showtime for leaking it to gauge fan reaction to make any sort of difference.

2 - It would take a very obsessive mind and skilled hand to fake an entire video clip. I doubt that it's fake and look forward to seeing it again on Friday at Kettler.

3 - The color balance in that pic is way, way, way off. There's a more realistic pic of it (probably photoshopped to make the colors match the "Change Is Coming" colors) here:

http://dccheapseats.blogspot.com/2007/06/who-hell-knows.html

4 - The Caps aren't denying that it's real and Ted has taken a "break" from his website until Monday. Convenient.

If this ain't the real deal, someone went a disturbingly long way to make it look like it.

I'll hold off opinion on these new jerseys until official pictures(or better quality leaks) start floating around.

But, I've always hated the old word-mark logo. It screams 'Dated 70s design', and doesn't belong on the front of a jersey. Same with teams like the Ducks (why did they need to put the word? Just put that big webfooted D on there).

Here's hoping that Ted's boys didn't hang out with the London 2012 crowd.....

Posted by: Kim | June 20, 2007 10:55 AM | Report abuse

I do not like these at all.

I've always wanted a return to the RWB scheme (and wondered who thought it was a good idea to go away from that), but I HATED the old logo with the written "capitals". This was their chance to come up with something new and refreshing, since they have been clammering the "Change is Coming" theme for months. This isn't change....its taking a step backwards to what was the past (and the past has not been great for this organization.)

I have to say, you guys really are idiots. Do you think for one minute they're going to make the new jersey orange after saying for months they're going back to red, white and blue? McPhee was on XM yesterday refuting the orange color and again saying they were going to be red, white and blue. Olie has seen them and said they're RW&B. Ted's said it. The website says it. Do you guys need to get hit over the head with a hammer to get it. Jeez, some people are just born complainers.

Posted by: b.orr4 | June 20, 2007 11:19 AM | Report abuse

If these are the real deal, I give them a thumbs-down.

While there is some sentimentality to the resurrection of the name logo, this new version neither looks good nor sharp.

Moreover, name logos never stand the test of time like a real logo does, such as the logos of the Wings or Blackhawks. The name logos adopt whatever is the trendy sort of font for that time period, but what is trendy in fonts comes and goes, and then the font of the name logo has to be changed from generation to generation. This particular version also looks amateurish. It's not stylish. When you realize that the Caps probably paid a designer a lot of money for this blah name logo, you are left shaking your head.

While I was hoping for some sort of eagle-type logo on the front of at least one of the new jerseys, the eagle logo on the shoulder is not what I was hoping for. Everytime I see that jersey with the shoulder logo, I think of all the young women sporting the shoulder tattoos, except the tattoos are usually bluish, and this one is brown. I wonder if the Caps designer just checked out the many tattoo designs on NinjaGirls.com, picked one and redid it in brown.

Overall very underwhelming and very disappointed.

b.orr4, i think everyone realizes the fact that the jerseys are red and that the whole orange thing is old news due to bad picture quality. You need to catch up on things, people are mad becasue of what the jerseys LOOK LIKE!

Posted by: Anonymous | June 20, 2007 11:26 AM | Report abuse

You know, I actually liked the federal blue and bronze colors and logos, but I could understand the attachment to the RWB scheme. The idea of a complete overhaul was a bit excessive to me, but like I said, I could see where it was coming from.

And while I'm cool with the colors (as they appeared in the "Draft Day 2006" picture that was on the front page of the Caps site for a while), I must say...

... That logo is an atrocity.

Having the full name of the team as a logo is weak, to be kind.

No amount of patience (unless I'm waiting for a re-design of this eyesore) will change my opinion of it. Some serious "tweaking" is in order.

Maybe the orange came from a merging of Ted's passion of the Capitals and Nanking.

When the Capitals first announced that they wanted to change jerseys they talked about how the style was dated, The designer who did there jerseys along with the Islanders jerseys had a definitive 90s look.

I think most people were expecting something classy like the Habs, or Rangers. Instead we got hit with Transformers The Jersey.

Posted by: Omar | June 20, 2007 2:02 PM | Report abuse

seriously - these uniforms belong to the Cassidy era, not the club trying to rebuild into a winner. Does the sample come with Ciernik stitched on the hack???

Posted by: Uni-Cap | June 20, 2007 2:40 PM | Report abuse

Gosh, people seem to be really upset about this.

Personally, I generally like the idea of updating and modernizing an older look - it worked well for the Pistons, the Islanders, the Oilers. The Islanders are a good example, actually. Theirs is an ugly, awful logo, but I don't think a logo is necessarily about having the most attractive possible design on the front of your team's jerseys. It's about the team having a consistent visual identity for the team's fans to identify with. When the Islanders took that away from their fans in the mid-nineties, the fans freaked out.

OK, so nobody freaked out when the Caps got rid of their logo in 1995, and those old uniforms certainly didn't have the winning tradition associated with them that the Islanders' uniforms did. But still, I like, in theory*, the idea of updating the old Caps logo. It's certainly not the greatest logo ever, but it's the Caps. It's the logo I grew up rooting for. Even if this current (leaked**) version ends up looking dated and goofy in ten years, well, you run that risk with any new logo or uniform design. At least it will have re-established certain parameters as to what should constitute a Capitals logo: the word "Capitals" with a hockey stick for the "t," the word "Washington" above it, and a few stars. I know that sounds kind of dumb, since it's admittedly not a great logo, objectively speaking. But I would rather they adopt that idea of what a Caps logo should be and maybe have to streamline or modernize it again in ten years when it's looking a little dated, than have them adopt yet another entirely different logo and identity, and then in ten years have to find yet another logo and identity when that one is looking dated.

* I agree that this leaked version is not the best possible modernization of the old logo. It's kind of ugly. I'm just saying I like the idea behind it.

** If this "leaked" logo does turn out to have been a decoy, I'll try to have a good laugh at myself for having talked myself into sort of liking it.

These are the new jerseys. The NHL shop confirmed it by mistakenly posting "NHL Draft hats" earlier than they were supposed to and the Caps hat was red and included the new logo. The Bruins also have a logo "update" coming and the same thing was discovered for them. The images have since been removed. Get used to it folks, these are the jerseys. Ugh.

Posted by: Jay | June 20, 2007 3:54 PM | Report abuse

Sad but true, I guess. Ted will have to come up with a new way to generate merchendise sales because a lot of people will not buy this new jersey.

Posted by: Finn | June 20, 2007 4:03 PM | Report abuse

i don't understand everyone's hang up on the name on the jersey. hell, at least we get that. look at EPL jerseys, where man u (one of the most franchised and merchandized unis in the world) says "AIG" on the front. i have no problem with the name on the jersey instead of a logo. and as logos go, neither the eagle nor the capitol make sense, as there are no bald eagles in d.c. and the team is the capitAls, not the capitOls. much ado about molehills, i say.

Posted by: pgreene | June 20, 2007 4:46 PM | Report abuse

You might want to rethink that no eagles in dc thing:
Near Washington, D.C., bald eagles have increased around the Chesapeake Bay and its tributaries. They nest at several sites around the Capital Beltway, and have been seen flapping over the National Zoo.

Close enough. And it's just not a random bird we have on the jersey, it's about what it symbolizes---in our nations capital.

Posted by: Anonymous | June 20, 2007 4:53 PM | Report abuse

i stand corrected. but the eagle is a NATIONAL symbol, not a d.c. symbol. we might as well throw the american flag on there if that's what we're going for. the red white and blue is a sufficient homage to national pride. if we're going to have a logo/symbol, it needs to be a d.c. thing, not a USA thing. that, in short, is why i'm ok with the name on the sweater. now if they could just fix that orange...

Posted by: pgreene | June 20, 2007 4:58 PM | Report abuse

Heck,
Why not just put A.O.L on the front of the jersey?? On the shoulders can be the foam AOL mascot??

IS this the level of support for a franchise that makes mistakes at every turn???

We live in the nations capital. Why not a logo that represents the nation, as the nations capital???? Why not an eagle?? even a logo version of an eagle...why not???

THe Caps can never seem to get it right.

i smell a stunt. for one thing, why would the new jersey be above "the way it was"? on the caps web site, the opening says the way it was but has the current uni. i would think it would say, the way it is or will be or something like that w/ the new jersey. two, the new jersey is red so this picture just has bad color. so if thats the case, why does the blue lettering match the blue lettering on the caps web site. if the orange should have been red, then the blue would look different too. i also don't believe they are going to keep the eagle. and lastly, i think all teams are going back to white at home, so i would think they would show the home jerseys, not the dark. hey, i don't know for sure, but it sure smells like a stunt or just someone doing some photoshopping. we'll see on friday.

Better Hockey
Better Jerseys
Cheaper Seats

Trust me, folks.. this is the real deal. Another user on the Caps' message board posted that there was a glitch on the main splash screen when you enter the site. If you right-clicked and chose "forward", it (for some STUPID reason) really did show the player putting on the new jersey.

I immediately grabbed three screen shots and posted them, and was promptly suspended from the message boards with my posts deleted.

Here are the three images I grabbed.. I don't know why they look so orange. I found it strange. Why would the images be up there to begin with, and if so, why is the color so 'off'?

But the biggest question of all: WHO THOUGHT THAT THIS WAS A GOOD DESIGN?

Tell me its not too late to change Mr. Leonsis' mind!

Ken, it sucks you got suspended for doing that. Its a bit gestapo over there.

It looks 'orange' because the fabric color doesn't translate to web color. Its not a high resolution image either.

That jersey sucks. Why are we going back to a look that equates to a team that perennially got no where? No one could come up with a worthwhile design over the past 3 years? Pathetic. Its like hollywood rehashing and remaking old movies because they can't come up with anything new.

Unoriginal and uninspired. Pray that ain't it. Especially at the price this defunct league is thinking of raping us with.

I understand the suspension, they were in "panic mode," probably trying to save some butts..

But it is VERY 'Gestapo' over there. I realize that our right to free speech isn't protected under their message board, but in a public forum, It'd be nice to know that dissenting views aren't censored. They have made it their M.O. to remove people who say things that Ted doesn't like.

Either way, these jerseys BLOW.

Even though I've received zero credit, it is pretty neat to think of how many thousands of people have viewed the images that I posted on freeimagehosting.net, and that Ted was forced to issue a "no comment."

Speaking of butts you can see the models butt crack.....and there are no numbers on the jersey, That i can see

Ive been looking at the jersey all day, and its really starting to grow on me. I think once you see it all together and on the ice people will change their minds

The colors are "off" in the leaked images because they come from an animation which was not full color. It was a black and white animation, except with just the color red filtered through when new jersey came into view. So the "leaked" images should only be judged based on the design and layout, and not the color.

Based on the design and layout only, I want to hurl.

Miserable looking whatever the color. But you know what? It makes no difference.
Decision is made, jerseys will be sold, and that's it. If there were any fans in a focus group to review the new jersey during the design phase, I think they should be ashamed of themselves.

For shame, you focus group members whose taste in logos/jerseys differs from mine!

Here is a link to an article by sportslogos.net In it there is a picture of a hat that was leaked by nhl.com, so i think that these are the real deal.

I'm 99% sure what's what some of us will be seeing on Friday night.

Pretty bad. No way they should have ditched the capitol logo. Very stupid.

The main problem with it, regardless of whether that's really it or not, are these new RBK jerseys which look like cheapo practice jerseys two sizes too small. That's going to be the case regardless of the design.

I don't think these are horrendous, but they aren't very good either. I'm glad the stupid black with the dome sweaters are gone (boring, unoriginal) but I liked the Eagle. It was unique in the league.
Wordmarks like this or like the Ducks' just don't work very well.

Insisting that all DC area teams be red, white and blue seems pretty dumb too. everything in this town is red, white and blue. DC should have institutions and culture of its own, seperate from the generic "patriotism." The blue and gold were different, yet classy.

Hopefully, the fans will show their distaste for this by not buying stuff with the new logo and continuing to wear their old stuff. Then the Caps (and the league overall) will realize their mistake in a few years, just as the Islanders responded to fan revolt against their Gorton's fisherman logo and went back to the old NY with the map.

On another site, they have a draft day hat with the old logo. Could this have been a quick change just to cover up a leak.

I have heard that the jersey are the RBK edge from the capitals official website. This was further confirmed in an article in Nhl Digest. If so this link shows the caps jersey in The RBK edge and with their logo. Dark red etc.

Tarik. You sure brought out the "WHINEBABYS" in this one.

Tarik,
Now that the final uniform has been announced, it would be interesting to see first several prototypes and how they morphed into the final uniform.
