Open thread: Capitals at Islanders

By Katie Carrera

logologo

Faceoff: 7 p.m., Nassau Veterans Memorial Coliseum; TV: CSN; Radio: 1500 AM

Goaltender Semyon Varlamov, who was originally slated to start against the Islanders, left the ice for the morning skate abruptly and is formally listed as day-to-day with an undisclosed injury but it's believed to be a knee problem.

With Varlamov unable to play, Tom Ford has been recalled from Hershey and will backup Michal Neuvirth.

Also, Coach Bruce Boudreau definitely shook up the lines with changes that included putting Nicklas Backstrom on the wing largely because the injury to his left thumb has prohibited him from taking faceoffs.

Based on warm-up here's what the lineup should look like against the Islanders:

Forwards
Ovechkin-Johansson-Knuble
Backstrom-Laich-Semin
Hendricks-Gordon-Beagle
Chimera-Steckel-Bradley

Defense
Alzner-Carlson
Schultz-Hannan
Erskine-Sloan

Goal
Neuvirth
Ford

Scratches: Marco Sturm and Semyon Varlamov.

I'd like to think Nicky's only playing because there's no one else to fill in (scary enough in itself). Anybody know the last time he played wing? Fingers crossed for tonight. (Can't be worse than last night, though.)

@Tondi, good point.

Posted by: wocoliz | February 26, 2011 6:50 PM | Report abuse

Hendricks-Gordon-Beagle
Chimera-Steckel-Bradley

----------------------

a little closer to a good bottom 3 but not quite. Good try though Caps, good try. You can't blamed too much for what you know nothing about.

chimera will soon get pushed to the 5th line. And Gordo is not a 3rd line center.

At least the Caps finally figured out what most of us already knew. That Jay Beagle is better than at least 3 of our regular forwards if not more. Its nice that Bruce can catch up to our way of thinking.

Posted by: cstanton1 | February 26, 2011 6:52 PM | Report abuse

poor Hannan got stuck with Sarge. Well, its his turn i guess. I bet Erskine would much rather play with Tyler than with the big goofy one.

Posted by: cstanton1 | February 26, 2011 6:54 PM | Report abuse

Could our goaltenders be any less durable!

Posted by: hotrod2 | February 26, 2011 6:57 PM | Report abuse

@Caps

2 points, please.

Why was the Hendricks/Steckel/Beagle line not reunited??!!

Posted by: PhilR | February 26, 2011 6:57 PM | Report abuse

I'm saying a 4-2 win tonight.

Lets go Caps!

Posted by: digster1013 | February 26, 2011 7:00 PM | Report abuse

Good evening everybody, I trust it will stay civil in here, win or lose.

Need a big win tonight guys...

Show some FRIGGIN emotion and play with some heart!

Let's go Caps!!! Show some heart for once.

It's good to see Beagle back with the Caps.

I predict a better effort tonight, if not a win.

Let's go Caps!

FloridaCapsFan - Hopefully we will have good things to talk about tonight

So far, so good...it is still 0-0!

Nice TO by Schultz.

Posted by: robostop10 | February 26, 2011 7:11 PM | Report abuse

Did I just see Semin deliver an open-ice hit? I saw him deliver 3-4 Euro-style checks at the game last night.

Posted by: seth_malaguerra | February 26, 2011 7:12 PM | Report abuse

Bad luck for the stick Sarge, but do you think grabbing the forward helps our cause???

There's more than urban dictionary definition for "Kool-Aid drinker." If it makes you feel better, here's the one I used when I adopted it for use here on the blog:

"Derived from the 60's drug culture when hippies would drop acid in their Kool Aid. A Liberal who is delusional in their beliefs."

Nice PK boys.

Posted by: robostop10 | February 26, 2011 7:19 PM | Report abuse

Schultz just took a two-handed slash in the leg from Haley and did nothing. I wonder if he'd react if he got punched in the face.

Seriously- the Isles one line has 375 PIMS. Does the entire Caps team have that many?

How about a PP Goal now!?

Posted by: robostop10 | February 26, 2011 7:21 PM | Report abuse

Can we PLEASE have a good showing?!?!?!

Is that too much to ask?????

Posted by: PhilR | February 26, 2011 7:21 PM | Report abuse

did you see that? The whole team gave up after the refs arm went up! No whislte and these guys are already skating away fro the play!

if you want C H A N G E of any kind, including some deals on Monday, you better hope they get zero points. Losing 2 games leading upto the deadline puts more pressure on our impotent GM to do something. Winning handily against a bad team like the Isles takes some pressure off him to do something. It shouldn't work that way but unfortunately it does.

And the only thing different between last night and tonight...we aren't losing yet!

Thanks Doom - maybe I will switch to scotch

I ignored my normal routine (rock white for road games) and bought lamb chops. So, red wine. Maybe changing the routine will help.

13 min in, our first SOG is by Chimera from about a 5 degree angle along the boards. I think Montoya closed his eyes while defelecting it away.

Excellent cycling, but nhl must change rule and blow the whistle when a player is down like that.

Nice defense!!! Just like swiss cheese.

Posted by: robostop10 | February 26, 2011 7:34 PM | Report abuse

i predict Hendricks v Haley or Brads v Haley.

I don't think anyone on our team will take on Konopka. Although I'd love to see Chimera get beat down.

Posted by: cstanton1 | February 26, 2011 7:34 PM | Report abuse

there it is. the first on 6 against Neuvy. 6-1 final.

Wonder whats on the Discovery Channel

12 Minutes in and 1 shot, versus 11 shots. Way to get these guys ready to play BigBaby! Honestly, a blind bat could see that the Caps have given up on the fatso

Oh and a goal, what a joke, keep juggling those lines like your chins, tubby -- seems to be working

Posted by: JIMALLCAPS2 | February 26, 2011 7:34 PM | Report abuse

time to go get another gin and tonic, this team is pitiful....

Posted by: PhilR | February 26, 2011 7:34 PM | Report abuse

It was just a matter of time. Maybe I'll go straight for the Everclear tonight.

Posted by: wocoliz | February 26, 2011 7:34 PM | Report abuse

I could have scored that goal. Where was the D? I wish someone would tell our D to play the man. The puck won't score on it's own.

Posted by: Doom_and_Gloom | February 26, 2011 7:34 PM | Report abuse

Darnit- I was wrong about Schultz getting schooled, but the defense was just as bad from Alzner. How bout stopping the guy with the puck Karl? Neuvirth had no chance.

Posted by: rockthis | February 26, 2011 7:34 PM | Report abuse

alzner, it's called "stepping up" it's when you "step up" on the opponent to NOT give him time and space. I know you're still learning so i thought i'd help.

Posted by: natresgroup | February 26, 2011 7:34 PM | Report abuse

tom - I'm in your neck of the woods for a couple of days. Used to drinkin during the game :)

Posted by: BoudreauDaPumpkinHead | February 26, 2011 7:35 PM | Report abuse

Alzner just backed up and gave him all the time and space in the world. Terrible decision.

As comparison, when Ovi crosses into O zone, opposing D get in his face.

Posted by: tominsocal1 | February 26, 2011 7:35 PM | Report abuse

Young players also tend to fade late in seasons early in their careers. Another reason why McPhee blew it this past offseason. Going EXTREMELY young at several key positions is what rebuilding teams like the Oilers do, not teams that are supposedly in contention that ended their 3rd straight season losing game 7s at home early in the playoffs.

lol @ George Freakin McPhee

Posted by: tmac2yao | February 26, 2011 7:36 PM | Report abuse

Remember last year, when the Caps seemingly always had the lead first? As Joe B said, they have the fewest goals in the first period in the NHL... That screams out that the coach is not getting the team prepared and the players just are not motivated. If that's not reason enough to make some moves, I dont know what is...

Posted by: rockthis | February 26, 2011 7:37 PM | Report abuse

You'd think Alzner would do better than that since he sees Ovi a lot during practice.

Posted by: FloridaCapsFan | February 26, 2011 7:37 PM | Report abuse

this team causes me to have hangovers. literally

Its funny that leading upto the deadline most of our guys are playing EXTRA krappy. Its almost like they want to get traded.

I hope we get to face the Flyers or Bruins in the 1st round this year. I think we'd lose to the Pens too but it would be fairer for us to face a healthy good team and get the waxing and public embarassment we deserve.

My fear is we'll face Tampa, get past them and McPhee breathes a sigh of relief as he gets another year or two to screw up.

Posted by: cstanton1 | February 26, 2011 7:37 PM | Report abuse

As comparison, when Ovi crosses into O zone, opposing D get in his face.

Posted by: tominsocal1

My point exactly. If you take the man out of the play, he won't score, hence OV's goal output this year. He always did it alone but now, he's taken out of the play and doesn't register even a point.

Posted by: Doom_and_Gloom | February 26, 2011 7:38 PM | Report abuse

somebody mark the GPS we need to save this location so we can hunt for any treasure after this ship sinks.

(doh, posted this oringially in the wrong thread)

Well, that ought to do it.

If I've learned anything about this team this season, it's that single gaol should be enough for this team of gutless wonders to quit on the rest of the game.

Shouldn't even come out in the 2nd, get started drinking early tonight, boys! Great 15 mins of Hockey, you earned it!

This team has no fire in the belly and needs a different voice. I've been saying this for over 10 months since they were dismissed in the first round. Where are you Mike Keenan?

Posted by: diner99 | February 26, 2011 7:39 PM | Report abuse

lol... a layup for 2-0 there.

We got lucky there.

McPhee has to go, followed by Boudreau.

Posted by: tmac2yao | February 26, 2011 7:39 PM | Report abuse

Alzner's game has been going downhill for a while now. He looks like Schultz out there. Timid and passive. He looked good there for a while so I'm hoping its just the wear and tear of his first nhl season getting to him and not a conscious choice on his part to cave into pressure.

Posted by: cstanton1 | February 26, 2011 7:39 PM | Report abuse

LOL at our team. At our offense. This is getting pitiful. Except for our bottom line of course.

Posted by: Albright4Snapper | February 26, 2011 7:40 PM | Report abuse

I've been a CAPS fan since 1984. I am so tired of this crap we are seeing this yr. I blame this season on the owner, GM, coaches, and players equally. They owe us all an apology.

Posted by: mcurtis2 | February 26, 2011 7:40 PM | Report abuse

Pray that we get blown out in this game somehow. Then McPhee will have no excuses to stand pat.

but it really does look like at least half this team is playing to get traded.

Realistically, a Stanley Cup run is about 3 more yrs away.

That went out of the f in zone!!!!!

Posted by: robostop10 | February 26, 2011 7:42 PM | Report abuse

And in case you're wondering when I say except the bottom line, pun intended. Our free-from-criticism owner loves to tell everyone that despite our success the Caps continue to sell out

Posted by: Albright4Snapper | February 26, 2011 7:42 PM | Report abuse

Boudreau: Let's not play run n gun with the Islanders. Why the heck not? They are 3rd from the bottom. Doesnt exactly show confidence in your players, offensively or defensively.

Locker: "It's an old-fashioned shootout." Wouldn't the Caps need to actually be shooting on goal for it to be a shootout? More like a shooting zone in the Caps end...

Which team is playoff-bound? I cannot tell.

Posted by: rockthis | February 26, 2011 7:42 PM | Report abuse

I'm hoping its just the wear and tear of his first nhl season getting to him and not a conscious choice on his part to cave into pressure.

Posted by: cstanton1 | February 26, 2011 7:39 PM

I very much think the former is the biggest factor. McPhee wanted to go extremely young at several key positions, eternal rebuilding style.

We are terrible.

Posted by: tmac2yao | February 26, 2011 7:42 PM | Report abuse

That was quite possibly the single worst period of hockey I have seen this team play this season.

I'm running out of words, "Pathetic" is the only one that seems fitting. What a pathetic excuse for a hockey club.

What a distressing (but not surprising) first period. How are we not down by more?

If we SOMEHOW get a point out of this (2 isn't even worth thinking about), the team should donate their game checks to Neuvy. He's the only one who deserves to be paid so far tonight.

Posted by: wocoliz | February 26, 2011 7:46 PM | Report abuse

Well, unanimous, Caps called out by announcers for both teams.

Thank God the bell rang before the ref could count to 10.

Think Boudreau will cuss at them at intermission?

Yeah, that'll work.

About as well as a judge telling Lindsay Lohan to stay clean.

The Washington Gutless Pukes outshot 14-5 by the lowly Isles. Muster up a measly 5 hits in the period. This is after getting totally humiliated at home the day before.

@tominsocal1:

The definition you sited is not in the same context as is being used on this blog and I think you know that. You are using the term to describe someone who follows blindly. Someone who is easily influenced by the misguiding of another (GMGM). This, of course, does originate from the Jonestown massacre.

My issue is not just with the use of the term. My issue is with someone telling someone else they should not be name calling as they continue to do so themselves. I'm sure you would agree that its hypocritical.

5 Periods without scoring a goal...

Posted by: Doom_and_Gloom | February 26, 2011 7:44 PM

We've been shutout in about 25% of our last 40 games or so. That's historically bad.

What is the point of having an offensive-minded coach?

Learning to play team defense is the right direction but you need a coach that understands what it takes to create offense within the structure of good team defense, not at the expense of it.

And the PP failures are a whole different entity. Isn't the PP supposed to one of Butterball's strengths?

He was also once known as the great motivator. This is the flattest looking bunch of losers I've seen in years.

KA-KAAAW!

You can read Beagle's face. He smells the sense of hopelessness in this locker room.

Wow, as I said that, Locker asks about the locker room.

Beagle tries to say the right things but you can read right through it.

And look at Locker's face. He can barely even find his sense of humor at this point.

ok, i got a new theory. Certainly think it is plausible.

With the deadline looming, everyone is afraid they are getting traded. They are playing to careful. Playing not to make misatkes. Playing scared. If there is any hope left in this awful season, its that maybe when the trade deadline passes, guys can focus on hockey and not on who is coming or going.

Anyone agree?

What do you think the reaction was in the locker room when it was announced that Al Montoya was playing goalie for the Isles? "Oh no, another no-namer who will shut us down." Apparently no one decided that peppering him from any/all angles was a good idea.

On the other hand, the Isles seem to think that Neuvirth is crap and are shooting whenever they can. Based on the two goals so far, I'd say the Isles have it right...

tom, I've been there myself. You're very welcome.

Posted by: wocoliz | February 26, 2011 8:13 PM | Report abuse

IMO the problem is part confidence and part system. Everybody in the hockey world expected them to do more last spring and they blew a 3-1 series lead. This season has been a failed reaction to that and this I believe has rubbed out their swagger and the coaching staff has failed to correct the problem. Of course I have no answers myself, and I know it is a hard thing to fix, but at the same time, that is what these guys (coaching staff) are in place to do. Maybe putting a guy like MacTavish behind the bench would light a fire under some ass. He's been there before. BB has lost these guys, too late to change the GM but not too late to ditch the coach...failing that, or a big change in the top six, I fear these guys are spiraling out of control. But then, what do I know!

Posted by: summitwalker | February 26, 2011 8:13 PM | Report abuse

Folks the 1985 Caps would play the 1985 Islanders with more heart. See all those retired Jersey;s on the rafters in Nassau. Now that was a team. Today's Caps would probably not show up for the game if they had to play the old Islanders teams. It would hurt too much. Billy Smith was probably tougher than any Capital today.

Good for Laich, but that's a softie from their goalie.

I saw that Bruce called a time out because they were playing so pathetic....how's that possible after what happened last night.

A coach seriously needs to come in here and scare the crap out of everyone so they provide maximum effort every night.

IF Tortorella or Laviolette were here, Semin would be gone, Chimera would be hitting, and our defense would be rebuilt. Just imagine if Brian Burke were our GM? 3/4 of the team would be traded.

I like Laviolette.

But Torts has never been a coach who preaches tough hardnosed hockey. His teams have never been that. Until he got Sather as his GM. Sather demands it. This is Sather's roster, not Torts.

Similar to Wilson and Burke in Toronto.

I would not want Torts as our coach if McPhee was the GM.

@cstanton,

yeah, you had it right. Remember when Laich would actually mix it up? That was before he became a pretty boy and started thinking he was getting paid to be a star instead of digging in the corners, hitting, and grinding.

same with Chimera- he used to be a real agitator, comes to the Caps, and now all you hear is that he can skate fast. Last night's fight notwithstanding, it's too far and few between when he really lays the wood on someone.

Hannan- if for no other reason then he has to have tons of pent-up frustration and he should lead by example. He doesnt do much else (does he even have a shot on goal recently?) so he might as well mix it up or at least clear the net with a little more aggression.

He fades into the background in hostile games v hostile players. He's a lightweight at best. He can't even throw a punch on his skates. The way that a lesser fighter like Sauer was easily able to bend him to the ice was just sad. Chimmy looks like he's built but its all mush. He must be really weak or have bad genetics. @cstanton - I definitely think Torts is demanding his team be tough, similar to Laviolette. Neither of them had a particularly tough team when they won cups - both in the SE Division of all places.

I had to laugh at the DJ King waiver...after McPhails big analogy:
1. Some guys can only fight
2. Some guys can play, but not fight
3. This guy can play and he can definitely fight...we're excited about having him on our roster.
Let's also remember, this was after a season with no enforcer, and teams would take liberties with all our pansies without retribution.

I've been ripping McPhee for 10 years....the definition of insanity...you know how it goes.

Anyone else think the Caps totally jinxed themselves this season by changing their slogan from "Rock the Red" which was the envy of every team in the NHL to "Building America's Hockey Capital"? Didnt they realize that Detroit already has Hockeytown on lockdown and that it sounds incredibly lame.

I love when the Caps have just been crushed and that commercial comes on, adding insult to injury.

Whichever wizard (literally & figuratively) in the Caps PR department came up with that should be canned and then buried under videotapes of BB's, aka the White Whale's, commercials.

Ovechkin with a team worst -2 and a team worst 3 giveaways.

He's been back to his old tricks tonight, trying to do too much 1-on-3s and stuff. He wants to step up for the team but that isn't how to do it. You still have to play team hockey.

Posted by: tmac2yao | February 26, 2011 8:47 PM | Report abuse

Ovechkin isn't the issue anymore, thank god.

the only types of trades the Caps can make that could possibly help them this yr is to go after guys like dustin penner and chris neil upfront, suffer thru Laich at center, and then add 1 hardnosed defensive dman. Then at least on paper they look like a decent playoff contender instead of a buncha ninnies and sissies.

Posted by: cstanton1 | February 26, 2011 8:47 PM | Report abuse

Just once I'd like for Locker to use the Acela Telestrator to demonstrate how to throw a great body check, using Ovi or Erskine as the example.

"Stop it here. This is where Erskine's face lights up and he goes to deliver the blow. Ok roll it. Stop it there. Here is where the other guy's head snaps back. Ok roll it. Here is where the other guy's skates go above his head. An old-fashioned decleater from Johnny E."

Posted by: rockthis | February 26, 2011 8:52 PM | Report abuse

Mmm, slightly better this period. Even if they win tonight I won't be happy 'cause I know they don't have the wherewithall to get it done in the playoffs. IMO, it's not the coaching, it's the players that don't believe in themselves. They have been off most of the season, the passing is atrocious, they run into (and injure) themselves, they are unwilling to try new offensive tactics, the offensive creativity is well nigh non-existent, lately the defense has been falling apart too (they should be down by 2 or 3 in this game) and Ovi is reduced to trying to do it all by himself only this time the league is ready for that. Trades might help but you've got to get them integrated and time is short for that. A message was sent by sending Perrault back to the minors but, so far, it doesn't look like it's been received and understood.

u preachin to the choir.

Good pull on those quotes.

Yeah, McPhee and his staff on crack unearthed a real gem of a player. A guy who can't play and barely fight.

The Flyers and Rangers trip over quality tough guys left and right. The Caps need a 2 season strategy to target a guy. And end up having to cut him. Real einsteins we got runnin this org.

Still think DJ can play at a half decent level. Maybe not a full time tough guy role but definitely someone who can play 50 games a year and give you decent tough guy minutes. He just needs a coach and GM who understands how to develop him.

It was a great goal, one of the only times his curl n drag move has worked since November.

Did you see Semin's face? He wasnt even that happy that he scored. He just put his team in front in a game they have to have, you'd think he would be excited.

The guy has more skill than 99% of the other players in the NHL but his mental makeup is awful. That's why people want him traded- his inconsistency, not his skill level. He disappears for long stretches of the game. He is 27, time to put it together game in, game out.

@cstanton...

Are you serious??? Why do you hate Semin so much? You know his problem...? His careers best year he had SF91 as his center. MJ90 is playing great right now, if he stays like this then Semin's play will just get better. We need to get a real good 2C at the deadline, and let Semin play with him. Given a good center, Sash is a Top 10 player in the league...

Bruce will spin a victory into a testament that his team never gives up. So it makes him look good as a motivator.

----------

BS he does. He skates away from other forwards instead of making the right play by closing the gap. He did it a few times last night v the Rags. Semin hates to get up and close with other players so he attempts to use his stick as he skates by them to free up the puck. Its a low% play. And yet he continues to do it instead of adjusting his style to NHL hockey.

That is just ONE of the reasons he's worth a lot less to this team than the sum of his point totals.

And jason chimera finished a check on kurt sauer yesterday, then pushed him and got into a scuffle. (which he promptly regretted but thats not the point)

the point is, you take a larger sampling than just one or two plays before you pass judgment on a player. My problems with Semin's game encompass several years of watching him. And more often than not, he chooses to forego the right play. His play away from the puck is bad. His play in the defensive zone is bad. His play on the half-wall is nonexistent. And he chooses to turn it on and turn it off at will. That's about as clearly as I can state why i dislike him so much.

actually i think he already did. That's why this team can't make a dent in the playoffs. They're not used to playing hard all the time.

This team's playoff performances are reflective of how Semin plays regularly. Go on autopilot for a while, then turn it on in some mad dash to salvage the long stretches of invisibility. And you'll always have gullible fans crowing about his talent level or how valuable he is.

Semin doesn't know what it takes to play playoff-style hockey, and his teammates don't either. Either that or they're too soft in the head to make that kind of commitment.

Semin is good when he's on, but he's not what this team needs if it truly is gunning for a cup. That's what makes him perfect trade bait.

Also, last night he *Was* one of the worst players on the ice. Seriously, I don't think he could have lost any more passes if he tried. He was *really bad* last night. He played better tonight.

he's not BAD. He's just overrated and very much a situational player who can fit in and possibly provide some offense to a team which has all the other parts in place.

that team, is not us.

So Semin, hopefully good riddance to you and don't let the door hit ya where the good lord split ya.

Spezza with 6 pts in the last 3 games.

Led his team in shorthanded icetime tonight in a 4-1 win over the Flyers.

He's 27 and has terrific playmaking skills and vision.

I'd take him in heartbeat for a package centered around Semin. He has a few years left on his deal but he won't likely be a dead weight contract should we want to move him down the line.

I don't know if he's obtainable but if the Sens want a shorter contract and a player who has torched them on occasion, Semin may make sense.

Posted by: tmac2yao | February 26, 2011 9:53 PM | Report abuse

What is with the Semin bashing? Just absurd. Some of you have no credibility. Semin has become the new Larry Murphy of this team. Come on guys. He gets an important goal and yet people still rag on him. I thought he played really well. And if he is so dreadful why would any other team want him. Come on guys relax and take a deep breath. He has a good game and yet you all pick on him. Why don't you rag on OVI? Or the rest of the team. Now that I think about it is Mike Green's fault we got beaten down by The Rangers. Oh I forgot he did not play most of the game. At least attempt to be fair. You would think that Semin is Haynesworth.

You people need to look at players within the context of the entire team's makeup. It isn't just about the indvidual player's skill set, independent from everything else.

What are the Caps weaknesses?

Among them, we lack depth up the middle and we're as soft as our coach's belly.

Semin doesn't help in either of those areas.

@tmac

Im a Caps fan and I like watching Semin play. I like the skill he brings. Yes I know, its not the hard nosed, body checking, drop the gloves type player...but anyone can do that. I like watching the guys that pull off jaw dropping moves. Sue me.

I also feel he gets a lot of negativity and criticisms unjustly. Im not saying he doesnt make mistakes, or make me slap my forehead occasionally. But when he is on, man is he fun to watch.

IF Semin moves on, I'll be disappointed, but my loyalty is with the Caps. As for my moniker on here...who cares really? Does that even matter? Ill be posting regardless. Hmm the CapitalFormerlyKnownAsSAOTI does a nice ring to it though.

he does help in the softness area.

he'll go on hiatus for the next 2 or 3 games and all his little fans will once again disappear until he comes back and scores another goal. That's because when he's not actually scoring, he's UTTERLY USELESS. The true sign of a situational skill player.

"I thought he played really well."

---

He played Really Well, agreed.

Tonight.

Against the Isles.

He's been invisible between tonight and his Hat Trick against the Ducks last week, before that he was invisible again. This is the problem. He's the portrait of inconsistency, and he has been his whole career. That's not what a team that's gunning for a cup needs, it's actually the opposite.

He's not "bad," he's just a poor fit. I think he'd be a great pickup for a team struggling to put butts in the seats, but I don't think you'll see much interest from legit playoff teams. He is what he is.

Posted by: VTDuffman | February 26, 2011 10:02 PM | Report abuse

@pkme - Larry Murphy - good analogy.

We should have a "day of rage" at Verizon center in support of Semin.

Semin was the best player on the ice for either team tonight. Of the caps last 3 wins, Semin scores game winner in two of them. But he sucks because 1) he's very socially awkward which some people think means he's a snob (boy do they ever read THAT situation wrong) and 2) he's not Steve Konolwalchuk or Dale Hunter. (And Thank God! )

There is a place in the game for skill and intelligence. Aggression is the refuge of those that lack ability.

But we're here.

Where were you last night?

And it's not about it being hard to take a win. I've been a Caps fan for over 30 years. My father was fan since the inception of the team.

What is tough to swallow is the thought of more years of McPhee failing to achieve what you and I and every other real Caps fan wants.

I want McPhee gone. If it takes losses and even a lost season, I believe it's worth it cuz we have no chance with that fool as the primary decision-maker of hockey-related decisions.

Ranger blowout = aberration
Isles comeback win = reality
---------------------------------------------------

GMGM could make that argument if last night were the only blowout loss against NYR this season.

7-0 and 6-0 losses against the same team in 3/4 of the season tells me it was no aberration.

I remember the game before that 7-0 shutout loss, they lost to the Avs at home and a lot of koolaiders on here were excited to see a good effort in the middle of that 8-game losing streak. And they were also feeling confident that they would snap the losing streak at MSG the following evening.

Also, he only had two shots? What was his TOI? 20 mins? one shot for every 10 minutes on the ice? This guy makes almost $7mil a year, and he has 2 shots in 20 minutes in a 6-0 blowout where he can't take a pass? Really?

Relit

I can be critcal but mostly I think I am fair. I think Semin is a mystery to so many. Some of the crap he receives is because I think he is a really shy person and does not feel comfortable with The English language. If he had spent a little effort trying to fit into US culture I do think many of the posters on here would like him more. He never attempted to assimilate but still folks really beat the snot out of him. OVI gets a pass most of the time and people point the finger immediately to Semin even when OVI coughs up pucks on PP and the other team gets a shorty. If the whole team plays like garbage Semin is blamed. It just seems a little off the mark. I personally think he has not been healthy. the first two months of the season he was the best player in the league in both directions minus Crosby and Stampkos. He also averages a point per game in his career almost. he also averages a point per game in the playoffs. Semin had more shots against the Habs than I think oVI did. he had no secondary support in The Habs series yet people blamed him for The Caps losing three straight. I just do not know. Some have an axe to grind. He worked his tail off in the playoffs. He also is a first line forward not a 2nd line forward.

Dale Hunter was a million times better than Semin. And in his prime, had a much higher trade value. So I'm guessing you never saw Hunter play in his prime. Or apparently Kono either.

I could care less that he's a socially awkward baboon. That's just an EXCUSE that Semin supporters like to use to pretend thats the reason most of us dislike him.

As for the comment that "Aggression is the refuge of those that lack ability", go tell that to the hundreds of quality hockey players who have hoisted the Cup who embody that style. Ever hear of Scott Stevens? Obviously not if you dismiss "aggression" as simply nothing more than a refuge.

I'll give you a hint Red. This ain't a Euro league. And AGGRESSION is a BIG part of the NHL. If you don't like it go watch another league. We'll take the Euros, but the game wont' change to the extent that aggressive players who can pull a regular shift will suddenly find themselves out of a job. I got a notion that your boy Semin will be out of a job in the NHL way before a guy like Backes, Dubinsky, Kunitz or Avery will find themselves unemployed.

SGM, seriously. Are you so insecure you feel the need to post under a different name. You know you can't hide your true nature from us. We know you too well. Now go be a good boy and sign in under your real name. I refuse to believe there are 2 Caps fans who post on this board who argue in exactly the same illogical manner.

I don't give 8 a pass, not that I needed to point that out.

Every player, coach and GM is fair game. I don't hesitate to offer my meaningless opinions, regardless of a player's stature.

you should really try to pay attention.

Semin is a situational player who can be a death knell for certain teams. And he could be inserted into a lineup where his assets can be better used and his glaring weaknesses minimized. He's less than the sum of his stats.

All 40 goal scorers aren't created equal. Some 25 goal scorers are better overall players than guys who score 10-15 more goals per year.

Is all this explaining really necessary?

13 yrs of subpar hockey with a coupla good regular seasons mixed in. i don't see the problem here.

I was hoping to see Gillies raining destruction tonight and see the Caps rue their waiving of DJK; it wasn't to be, but maybe Tuesday. It'll take me awhile to get over the loss of that weapon in our arsenal.

Big games tonight by Majo and Laich, and props to Hendricks for gamely illustrating why it's nice to have a heavy sitting on the bench. Erskine played steady, but he should've dropped the mitts and pounded Martin after the two exchanged shoves. (For me, tonight was go-time for #4, pokerface). Also Big John, what's up with going in behind the other team's goal line in consecutive games? Stick to your strengths and remember where you came from...

And because DJK is gone, I can't afford to see the Lumberjack stray from his roots anymore than he already has. Therefore, I'm giving him a new nickname that I hope will serve him well the remainder of the season.

Early in the 3rd, I couldn't help but notice Johnny directing the d...gesturing with his stick and pointing his hand. I've noticed him doing this more recently, and not just when paired with Sloan. It made me think of good'ole Bobby Weir charging the front of the stage, pulling up a knee as he thrust his head back, playing Johnny Rock Star for the fans.

It was cheesy, but I loved it. That's kinda how I feel watching Erskine take charge on the backline. So in hopes that #4 returns to his fearsome ways (and giving a nod to the Hockey Gods, deadheads in their own right), the Lumberjack is now Johnny Rock Star to me. Get behind it....

BB MUST GO!! (three)

I would agree with you but that would make both of us wrong. I disagree with you and you disagree with me. I will not change your opinion and you will not change mine. So be it. One thing we do agree on from last spring is that BB should have been canned at that time. I was willing to give BB the benefit of the doubt a little bit but he clearly is not the right Captain of this ship. Instead of a trade I would prefer a new skipper. if you get rid of Semin who would score the goals then. There are very few players I would trade Semin for. I suggested earlier I would trade Semin and Schultz for Nash and Hejda. Now that would be a good trade.

Posted by: pkme | February 26, 2011 10:42 PM | Report abuse

Semin really is sympomatic of why this team underachieves.

He's able to keep his job and make a lot of money by putting in a halfhearted effort. So he gets a pass.

Most of the rest of this team feels they can also get by with this type of effort. Which is why 3x a week we get to read such brilliant quotes like "we just need to be ready to play at the start of a game" or "if we could just play 60 mins of hockey.."

Semin being dumped will be this organization's first step to RECOVERY. And then we can all be Semin-free.

I guess i just want it on record that the Semin dislike does not stem from his off-ice stuff. If it does, its a very insignificant part of it all.

I dislike him because he isn't a team player and he gives out widely varying degrees of effort depending on his mood at the time.

And if we had game tape to watch together, I could point out to you how lazy he was in the beginning of the Habs series. Its nothing short of a lie that he gave a great effort v Montreal. He gave a great effort SELECTIVELY. But those first two games and part of the 3rd, he was very very lazy on the ice.

i know the Caps are high on Nash and actually tried to trade up to get him. Was it his Dale Hunter connection? Perhaps. I'm a part-time Rich Nash fan. i thought he'd turn into a more bruising power forward who could score. He's definitely a strong player on his skates but not quite the David Backes type of forward. More speed than Backes but not willing to do the dirty work very often.

I see the blowhards are causing a gale on CI tonight. If someone disagrees then they must be koolaid drinkers and trolls. If the team loses then that is expected but if the team wins then they didn't deserve the win. You guys are consistently and relentlessly and pointlessly negative.

What ever happened to rational analysis? Or a balanced and objective point-of-view? I am not a koolaid drinker nor am I a drinker of goat's blood. I am of the view that this team has much that is good about it. And also has much that is bad. It is consistently inconsistent, and I think we all share in that frustration.

This team is unbalanced, has too many rookies in significant positions, and a few glaring holes in key positions, which makes it a team that is unlikely to go far in the post season. However I am not about to trash everything Caps the way so many of you are wont to do.

A little objectivity goes a long way.

Just checked in. It's so heartwarming to see all the CI faithful getting along so well this evening. Here's the deal guys: Semin is a potentially great hockey player who appears to be very introverted and lazy. Those two things cause the word "potentially" to always precede the word "great" when describing his play. If you watch all the stick penalties he takes they are from reaching with his stick, which means he is not hustling like he should be, and therefore taking dumb penalties. Just my opinion, I don't dislike the guy. I wish he would play to his potential all the time, then he would be one of the best in the NHL.

We *shouldn't* have "too many rookies in significant positions, and a few glaring holes in key position" at this point. Last off-season was the time to address these issues and GMGM did nothing.

Posted by: tmac2yao | February 26, 2011 9:56 PM

I posted this earlier but it's worth repeating since people keep overlooking the point.

cstanton has touched on it several times as well as far as explaining that he doesn't think Semin is necessarily a terrible individual player but rather that he has weaknesses that need to be accounted for by the players around him in order to utilize his particular skills most effectively. The Kings could make much better use of him than us while we have other needs.

The Caps need to get stronger up the middle. We need a legit 2C in the worst of ways. It's worth sacrificing Semin for that kind of player. The point about who would score for that 2C is shortsighted since a legit 2C brings a lot more to the table than just setting up his wings to score. In general, a good C is more valuable than a good W. Ask Fedorov or Bowman or any Lemieux or many others.

We also need a top line d-man. Like with the 2C, not just for this season but beyond. If we can use Semin's contract to bring in a Spezza (or another C if you don't like Spezza) or a Shea Weber type, it's worth the sacrifice in my opinion.

I don't hate Semin. I just see bigger and more pressing needs, both this season and beyond. I also don't like spending $16+ mil on a couple of wings. I'd rather build more up the middle.

Pat Verbeek's nickname was "the little ball of hate." Apparently he's not the only one.

Posted by: tominsocal1

if we had some more Verbeeks, there wouldnt be a nightly procession of quotes coming out of that locker room regarding a lack of effort.

so yes, this team, the fans, everyone needs a little more hate. You don't win Cups on love.

One of the reasons Caps fans hate teams like the Flyers and Pens and Rags is because those teams inspire some real hatred. Because they employ players who play a certain way. I don't think other teams hate us. And that's a problem. If they don't hate us, we're not trying hard enough.

is what ever enough?

You got ticked off because no one killed Stepan over his hit on Green. Frankly, I didn't think it was a bad hit but I'm always up for some on-ice retribution if I feel it'll help team chemistry.

Tom, don't you think its a little silly when certain fans come on here and get all giddy because the Caps beat the Isles after yet another miserable halfgame effort? Ok, so maybe the giddiness on its own is just mildly annoying because they don't seem to figure out its groundhog day all over again.

But when those same fans get sanctimonious about how other fans shouldn't criticize the Caps because it means we're not true fans, i think that entitles us to a little verbal barrage. Does it not?

To be blunt, I don't come here to make friends. I don't come here to hold hands and sing kumbaya with all of you. I don't care if nobody likes me or my opinions in this setting. It's an 82 game season. Even the best teams half a$$ sometimes. Hell, I saw the Blackhawks half a$$ in the playoffs (see game 1 against Vancouver). They were getting punked by the freakin' Sedins and still won the Cup.

I agree that the team has holes and I'm not a BB or GMGM, but damn I'm pulling for them to win the Cup. Don't see how you can pre-pay for not winning a Cup after a win and when the trade deadline hasn't even passed yet. Anything can happen in the playoffs.

McPhee missed the boat in the off-season, Ted may not recognize this fact (he might but doesn't want to say so), and we are where we are. All the moaning and groaning in the world aren't going to change this overnight. The one thing that will bring about change is fans not renewing their STs or buying merchandise. This will take time. Meanwhile what can we do but watch and see how things play out?

CBC showing the possible effects of the new head shot rules. They showed some plays from tonight where Cooke and Mike Richards both let up when they had a chance to take off a player's head. In the past, both of those plays probably end up with players knocked out on the ice.

They also showed the Stepan-Green incident during the discussion and compared what Stepan did to what guys like Forsberg did on a regular basis when players were coming in behind him. They seemed to agree that it was a bit questionable and that there was a certain degree of retaliation cuz of Green cross-checking him earlier but it wasn't nearly as dirty as some of the head shots we've seen in the last year or so. I agree that we should have responded but not simply because it was a dirty hit. You just need to respond to plays like that to send a message to the opposing team and your own teammates.

no i am absolutely not happy about the 2 points. And I don't see why I should feel guilty about that. The only way any potential change occurs with the Caps is out of pure desperation. They don't it when they're winning games (something I categorically disagree with).

You should never just aim to improve your team during a losing streak or a bad season. You lose leverage that way. But McPhee's moves always seem to come when this team needs a shakeup. Well, if we'd lost 2 in a row heading into tomorrow's deadline, we'd see (maybe) more dynamic movement from the Caps.

The Capt lost his temper earlier but it was well founded. I lost mine a bit with will11 but you and I agree on what is going on there.

The. Hard. Cap. Era.

Put. Down. The. Koolaid.

Dynasties. Are. Largely. A. Thing. Of. The. Past.

There may be an occasional dynasty but nothing like we saw in the past.

This is the same unfortunate thinking that plagues Leonsis and apparently McPhee.

Windows are smaller than ever before in the NHL. That kind of thinking has McPhee sitting his hands while Crosby and Toews and who knows this year raise cups.

And we have this team.

You also have no clue how those prospects will compare to other prospects around the league. I'm guessing you know little to nothing about the prospects of the other 29 teams in the league. For you to say Johansson will be this and Eakin will be ready next year or be this or that is pure hope and guessing. I don't know where they rank but I'm not going to annoint them like you're doing when I don't know enough about the other prospects throughout the league. Only time will tell how Eakin, Orlov, Kuznetsov, etc... fare compared to other prospects and young players.

I'll give you that a win is a win, but that was a pathetic effort against one of the worst teams in hockey. If it weren't for an absurd performance by our goalie and them missing no less than 3 wide open shots, we lose that game 5-2.

So maybe you will understand because of the style of hockey that you admire that I have their backs. Once a person does something nice for me, I will never tolerate any disrespect toward that person (assuming they are being respectful). That's because friendship goes beyond hockey.

----------

that's why i don't let people do nice things for me. Because I don't trust their intentions. Kirk I think is genuine. Fanock may be, I don't know him. But the way he talks sometimes, reminds me of a Caps fan once who did something nice for me but had an ulterior motive. No it wasn't sexual! But sometimes people do try and make nice with you on the side to curry some favor.

That all sounded paranoid huh, lol

now this makes me sad. You people have pushed my buddy over the edge. Its like taking a dog and making it mean by abusing it. You have virtually stripped away TMAC's once-innocent and non-confrontational identity and pushed him into a corner whereby he has undignified himself (and therefore cheapened his own soul) by responding to the verbal abuse.

Posted by: cstanton1 | February 26, 2011 11:57 PM

The main reason I avoided it wasn't because I have high morals or anything. It had nothing to do with that. It's because getting into that kind of stuff on the internet drives you nuts. You can't put a fist to a face over the internet so little puss*es like sgm can just keep poking and poking away and not have to answer for it.

Regardless, everybody has a tipping point.

LMAO @ Tmac - Hilarious about McPhee. I was just telling a friend the other day everytime I see him - he has this constant look of having "smelled someone's or his own fart."

I've liked some moves McPhee has made but you gotta start making some moves that pay big dividends. That hasn't happened with him yet.

As for the scarf - gotta lose it.

NONE of us are GMGM; NONE of us are Ted Leonsis; NONE of us are Bruce Boudreau. If you want to run the team, go apply for the job, if you feel you're qualified enough. Otherwise, sit down, shut up, and enjoy the successes.

LET'S GO CAPS!

Oh Christ would you stop!

@cstanton and tmac: Please rip this person a new one! Now I've had enough! We try to get back to civility and ANOTHER PERSON has to come on and start with the "You aren't in the game so you shouldn't comment" stuff.

Look up in the FKN US Constitution and you will find Articles 1 thru 10, otherwise known as the Bill of Rights.

AMENDMENT 1: FREEDOM OF SPEECH.

Now tell me again I have no right on a public forum to comment because our GM has made idiotic move after idiotic move?

well everyone, have a great night. I actually just realized i only have a passing interest in what transpires tomorrow. More than disenchantment, I'm dangerously close to detachment. I kinda almost don't care about this year's team anymore because I don't think the 3 or 4 player moves that need to occur will occur. So I hope you guys enjoy the trading deadline and I hope whatever McPhee does, he doesn't screw things up too badly for the next GM to have to fix :)

I also have little wish in seeing Marco Sturm enter the lineup. Unless he's somehow being centered by Oshie and has Clowe on the other wing (yes Clowe can play the off wing too).

I do think we can look at MJ. He knows how to play defense, skates beautifully, stick handles well, plays tough for the puck and has high hockey iq. I am surprised you do not see this or agree about MJ. It looks like you want to bash everything in sight like a wrecking ball. On another note I have watched Eakin in 6-7 games and he looks like a stud. I also watched the world juniors and saw enough of Orlov. I am not guessing. As far as the other two Russians they look promising. Orlov and Eakin are much closer to playing at The NHL level. I agree it is impossible to guess the future and the hard cap era is in an issue. And of course you never know. Go look at Ron Wilson's comments about The Capitals prospects.

i've said before i have no hockey background - and believe any analysis i offer would just get picked apart - so i give very little in that area
i'm a caps fan, they consist of about 95% of all of the hockey i watch
since any complaining, whinning or bashing will have zero outcome on players, games or front office - i choose to enjoy them as they are

I love Semin! I believe Semin is one of the ten most valuable forwards in the world and would fit well on any team anywhere. I do not like the idea of trading him. I think maybe if you're not liking him right now, you may have lost perspective, from watching him too much or something.

I also think that during his slump he may well have been playing with an undisclosed injury. It is not in anyone's interest for anyone to talk about any injuries.

I meant to clarify when I said "shut up": the incivility sucks. Let me guess - half of you are the guys who email Ted to tell him that he's doing a bad job running the team and he needs to fire Boudreau. And the incivility? Example: I love how tominsocal1 says "please rip this person a new one". Internet anonymity is such a lovely thing, isn't it?

And I get that you have your First Amendment rights - like I said, I meant to clarify that point. But yes, I'm proud of the effort they put forth tonight. I saw good things, I saw bad things, but we came away with two points. Quite frankly, with the inconsistency this year, the two points is just fine with me.

Despite the termination and end to the DJK experiment, my rage tonight is not on par w/others....KEEP IT UP, BOYS!!

But because I'm still a little irked that some would question Johnny Rock Star's willingness to defend a teammate, I can't help but think of DJK again. When he suffered a beatdown at Orr's hands in early Dec., and Ovi skated to the box and gave him props, that's the closest we've come to team unity as I can remember this year. (Wait, there was Johnny Rock Star teaching Sutton a lesson after hitting Hendricks, but I didn't see that game.)

What happened next? Coach comes out and says icetime would be based on merit, then exiles DJK for the next 5 weeks. How's that for a coach supporting his players? That sent a clear and loud message to the team as to what was valued and expected by the coaching staff.

"section 412 - folks, support your team thru the good and the bad"

---

Everyone supports the team in different ways. For some of us, supporting the team means unquestioning devotion to everything the team does from management on down. For some of us, it means wanting only the best for the team which involves identifying issues and problems and offering solutions to those problems.

There are different ways to support a team. One could argue that your unquestioning praise and whitewashing of issues do more damage than good to the team you allegedly support.

Say your brother gets into a wicked drug problem. You love your brother and want only the best for him. Do you try to tell him to get off the smack and go into rehab? Or do you give him a place to crash when he gets the nods, and "loan" him a couple of bucks for his next fix? Both are different ways of "supporting" your brother.

I know which course of action I would choose, though.

Your entire hypothetical situation is based on something that has happened *once* (kind of, we got swept didn'tget to game five of the SCF let alone game 7) during the entire 14 year tenure of GMGM.

That's why most people scoff at your silly hypothetical situation. It literally has never happened in the history of this organization. Therefore it is based on literally nothing.

You know what does happen a lot? First round choke jobs. Those are a much better basis of evaluation.

I'm not just saying that they won't win a cup. I'm saying they won't even come close under McPhee.

I'm not using the binary logic of win the cup = success and don't = failure.

I'm saying that with McPhee being the main decision-maker and doing the roster consctruction, WE WON'T EVEN COME CLOSE. That is very different.

Good point about knowing every single player coming up in every single system. You got me there. Just the NHL would be around 700 players floating in and out. Then throw in the AHL affiliate of each NHL team and it would be impossible to know. I mean you are correct. It is impossible to know how a 18 year old draft pick is going to work out. For all the stuff about Mcphee I do think George is pretty good with draft picks. Unlike David Poile. Poile was pretty good at the deal but could not draft his way out of a wet paper bag. Carpenter over Ron Francis being one. Mcphee does not seem to be a good trader. He gives up too much or does nothing. You all want to do some trades. i do not have a lot of confidence in his trading ability.
