They're showing the Caps vs. Pens series from 2 years ago on NHL Network right now.

It's only the 1-hour abbreviated version but if anybody wants to record it and watch it later, maybe you can catch a glimpse of some of the dominant forechecking they were putting on us.

Over the summer, they showed the entire series game by game. If you were really into it, you could definitely revisit the issue by watching the entire series.

Do the Islanders have a heavyweight enforcer?

Cant assume anything against the Isles. We get lazy, we loose.

Posted by: BernieWolfeFan | October 13, 2010 7:13 PM | Report abuse

Again, get lazy and this will be a long night...

Posted by: BernieWolfeFan | October 13, 2010 7:15 PM | Report abuse

Getting outworked early. Paid off for them that time.

Posted by: tmac2yao | October 13, 2010 7:15 PM | Report abuse

Blah. Keep goals against under 2 please.

Posted by: MyPostIDisAfake | October 13, 2010 7:17 PM | Report abuse

Bahahahaha

Bruce is in midseason form. Telling the press that they're crazy for thinking he's going to split up OV and Backstrom and spouting off some stuff about wrong jerseys being put out. I love it!

That being said, I do not love this start. Let's at least get a quality scoring chance sometime soon...

Posted by: Raber | October 13, 2010 7:19 PM | Report abuse

Sloan makes me nervous every time he has the puck on his stick in his own end.

Obviously some of that is due to not being in the lineup regularly but I think it goes beyond that.

Posted by: tmac2yao | October 13, 2010 7:20 PM | Report abuse

Yikes... giveaways in our own end. Alzner that time.

Posted by: tmac2yao | October 13, 2010 7:22 PM | Report abuse

Now Erskine.

Team looks half asleep.

Posted by: tmac2yao | October 13, 2010 7:23 PM | Report abuse

Over under the amount of time BB waits before going back to the normal lines?

Posted by: icehammer97 | October 13, 2010 7:25 PM | Report abuse

What is it with the Caps sleeping through the first period? They've GOT to get over that.

Posted by: wocoliz | October 13, 2010 7:26 PM | Report abuse

It looks like our guys are avoiding giving and receiving checks, outside of a couple players.

Posted by: tmac2yao | October 13, 2010 7:27 PM | Report abuse

Definitely won't be a 60 min effort tonight.

Hopefully 50 or 40.

fairly predictable start to a road game for this team after coming off a home win (or two)

this has been a recurring issue for years. Its seemingly impossible for this team to come out fired up after they've pulled off a couple of wins. They'll also predictably turn it on at some point.

too bad this style doesn't translate well in the ....well you know

Posted by: cstanton1 | October 13, 2010 7:32 PM | Report abuse

sheesh..home game, even. We'll blame the slow start on the competition.

Posted by: cstanton1 | October 13, 2010 7:35 PM | Report abuse

BB needs to go back to normal lines.

Backs Semin Laich looked like they didnt have a plan in the offensive zone just now.

Posted by: wtf_e_fehr | October 13, 2010 7:36 PM | Report abuse

What's the excuse for looking this flat?

No game yesterday... no travel.

They look terrible against a depleted Islanders team.

Posted by: tmac2yao | October 13, 2010 7:37 PM | Report abuse

only one showing energy on D is Carlson

HIT THE FREAKIN NET!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Posted by: wtf_e_fehr | October 13, 2010 7:39 PM | Report abuse

Knuble chose to not go attack the forward on the halfwall there, that's why Neuvy had to kill the play dead.

lets give em a break. They shouldn't have to play hard against the Isles. They can turn it on in the 3rd pd and pull it out. Works every time! They should also charge half-price for this game. Thats fair

Posted by: cstanton1 | October 13, 2010 7:40 PM | Report abuse

Wonderful... was hoping to avoid our first PK until we woke up.

Not confident with the way the team looks right now.

Posted by: tmac2yao | October 13, 2010 7:41 PM | Report abuse

Agreed, this 1st period slump needs to be delt with. That is where the coaches come in and BB is showing his inexperience in not getting the boys to that urgency level until we get scored on or after a period.
Man down, now we are chasing them. Not good.

Posted by: BernieWolfeFan | October 13, 2010 7:41 PM | Report abuse

Isles grinders are finishing checks down low. Good effort thus far by a depleted crappy team.

Posted by: cstanton1 | October 13, 2010 7:42 PM | Report abuse

Phew, lucked out. We were getting killed 5-on-5... wasn't looking forward to that kill.

Laich completely negated all his hard work and nearly cost us.

At least Green showed up, along with King and a couple others.

Posted by: tmac2yao | October 13, 2010 7:44 PM | Report abuse

my boy STeck still looks slow but at least he finished his check on that PK and helped Laich get the puck out by taking his man out of the play

Posted by: cstanton1 | October 13, 2010 7:44 PM | Report abuse

Geez...

Posted by: BernieWolfeFan | October 13, 2010 7:45 PM | Report abuse

About the only thing that could make me happier about the Caps' PK so far this season is if they didn't have to do it so often.

(BTW, I'm thrilled to see Greenie playing solid defense this season!)

Posted by: wocoliz | October 13, 2010 7:45 PM | Report abuse

i blame schultz for that high-stick on green, schultz backed up all the way instead of standing up Trent Hunter and let him skate in unimpeded right on Green.

on the plus side, Sarge's wimpy play also led to a PP for us.

Posted by: cstanton1 | October 13, 2010 7:46 PM | Report abuse

That was up there as one of our worst periods of the young season. Looked like the ATL game all over again.

We could easily be down 2-0.

Flat, soft, uninspired hockey.

They have 2 periods to salvage their pride... heh, exaggerating but that was pathetic.

you're getting a semi-strong effort from our grinders tonight - Hendricks, Fehr. Lets hope the 'delicates' show up at some point.

and i see flash and semin are padding their (get) hit total tonight..Jurcina's laid a pasting on a coupla cupcakes already in the 1st.

Posted by: cstanton1 | October 13, 2010 7:50 PM | Report abuse

uninspired is how i would describe the 1st period

Posted by: Capt_Kirk_in_AZ | October 13, 2010 7:50 PM | Report abuse

Also, with Backstrom not 100% for whatever reason, it further shows the importance of having depth up the middle.

Flash has done about as well as you could expect out of him but, in general, there are a lot of question marks up the middle. Not like that hasn't been a topic for oh... 2 or 3 years or anything.

Posted by: tmac2yao | October 13, 2010 7:52 PM | Report abuse

I had the TV on mute but I hope the Versus crew bashed us for our pathetic effort.

Posted by: tmac2yao | October 13, 2010 7:55 PM | Report abuse

Wow is it time to start worrying about our PP?!

Posted by: rachel216 | October 13, 2010 7:58 PM | Report abuse

I'm not sure it was on BB for that lackadaisical effort.

He shouldn't have to motivate them after the effort they gave last game. They know what it takes. It's fresh on their mind. It's not like they're in an extended slump where the coach needs to break them out of bad habits and remind them what it takes to win.

A lot of the players just didn't show up in the 1st.

I'll blame BB if they continue like this for the next 40 min and we don't see changes next game.

Posted by: rachel216 | October 13, 2010 7:58 PM

I wouldn't worry about that, specifically.

I'd worry about why the team played so awfully as a whole for an entire period... even the PK lucked out.

They had a few wide open shooting lanes and we weren't closing space like in the last few games.

Then Laich had that careless play to negate a solid effort.

I had the TV on mute but I hope the Versus crew bashed us for our pathetic effort.

Posted by: tmac2yao |

i heard some fans lustily booing. Does that help?

lets face it. If I was planning on attending a game, unless its the Flyers or Pens, I'm not buying a tkt well in advance. I buy a ticket based on how this team has been playing lately. The best efforts are usually right after a losing streak or they haven't won more than 1 game in a row. The more they win, the more you end up seeing those flat 1st pd efforts. Winning 2 in a row has taken the sour taste out of their mouths from the Atl game.

combine that with facing a depleted inferior team and this 1st pd was totally predictable.

Posted by: cstanton1 | October 13, 2010 8:02 PM | Report abuse

when a team consistently has issues playing hard in the 1st pd, i blame the coach.

turning it on later in the game is a losing proposition. You can only come back so many times.

Posted by: cstanton1 | October 13, 2010 8:04 PM | Report abuse

only good thing about the King fight is he hit someone which precipitated the fight.

I'd rather him hit and then fight vs just lookin for the other team's heavy. And he doesn't look like a dominant fighter right now anyway. For exciting open chuckers, my vote is still Colton Orr. Most exciting fighter in hockey. And potentially the most devastating.

Posted by: cstanton1 | October 13, 2010 8:06 PM | Report abuse

Carlson joins the turnover party.

We look horrible.

Neuvirth has to work on his stick-handling. That is the biggest issue I've seen with him so far.

I'm glad it was OV who scored. He deserved to be the guy.

Still, we just look nothing like the team from 2 nights ago.

I think that game against Ottawa was out best game of the season, even over the NJ game.

Ottawa played much better than NJ and we palyed for 60 min and did all the little things right for the most part. Those things weren't true against NJ despite the score.

Every pass/shot Laich makes tonight seems to end up on the stick or in the body of an Islander.

He may be working hard but he's not executing. He's not alone.

Ovechkin and Green have been beasts. Fehr came on strong and Hendricks has done some good things. Steckel's been pretty good, too.

But yea, Chimera doesn't have very good hands. He's fast and can play physically at times but that's about it. If he's doing those things and working hard, that's all you can ask.

Steckel did almost the same thing. Rubbed a guy off the puck on the far side (on TV) circled in front of his net and almost coughed the puck up but recovered.

i've said it before i'll say it again. Chimera=Grier. If you like one, you like the other. I have disliked them both for a while now.

imho, they are both underachievers because they lack a mental toughness. Their hands-of-stone similarity is just an interesting sidenote. This isn't based on one game or a stretch of games either.

i'll be willing to watch Chimera play over the course of the yr and grade him. So far, he's been good in two games, and underachieved in the other 2.

I don't know what the heck Bruce said to the boys, but that to me is a great example of what a coach needs to do. You boys play like a team and do the simple things on the PP and good things are bound to come. Great movement, shot, and goal! GO CAPS!

Pathetic win... the Isles deserved better.

I'll get flamed for that and other comments. Go for it.

Neuvirth, Green, Ovechkin, Fehr, Steckel and maybe 2 or 3 others came to play.

We were sloppy, soft and got outworked.

What a ridiculously misleading result.

This team needs to focus on the process, not the results.

Please, please tear them apart, Boudreau. Horrible game... worse than ATL everything considered.

4 games in now:

no hits for Semin or Flash yet for the season.

Posted by: rachel216 | October 13, 2010 9:38 PM

Now, that, is a no-doubter than everybody will agree about.

He's been our MVP through 4 games, along with Green... maybe Ovechkin, too.

He's been nothing short of a stud this season.

The only single thing I would point out is his stick-handling and decision-making with the puck. Just something to work on.

Carlson had a mixed game but the bad was pretty bad.

Posted by: tmac2yao | October 13, 2010 9:41 PM | Report abuse

Positives:

* Won the game
* Still haven't given up a PP goal
* Neuvy was a wall tonight
* 2nd period was pretty good

Negatives:

* Bad 1st and terrible 3rd period
* We were sleeping until Bruce yelled at the boys before that PP late in the 3rd

Summary:

We need to play like we're always down a goal regardless of the scoreboard. Same old problem of "can't play a 60 minute hockey game"

Posted by: Raber | October 13, 2010 9:42 PM | Report abuse

yeah, you know WHO decked Orr??

my boy Deryk Engelland. Another guy the Caps let get away.

he can play D, he's a true leader, and he's one of the strongest guys in hockey. AND he improves his fighting ability every single yr.

why the Bears/Caps let him get away after he proved his worth to them I'll never know. But they did it with Hendricks too. And I'm a bigger fan of Engelland's than I am Hendricks. He's better than Tyler Sloan thats for damn sure.

You. Have. To. Be. Kidding.

Right?

Please don't use shot totals to prove your point.

We got so thoroughly dominated in the 3rd and came out flat and uninspired in the 1st.

We played better in the 2nd but even, there was a lot left to be desired.

I don't expect perfection but they sucked tonight. We deserved to lose.

Posted by: tmac2yao | October 13, 2010 9:46 PM | Report abuse

Anyone want to focus a little on the good? Like our PK is looking good, and I know I will get chewed out for this, but with the exception of a small handful of individual gaffs, the D was good. Our offense needs to learn how to deal with teams that clog the nuetral zone, and faceoffs weren't great, but we outshot NYI, Nuevy lookd great, Backie is slowly getting back into it, and WE WON! wasn't a pretty game, but if I were coach, I wouldn't be chewing them out in the locker room.

cstanton

so Chimera has 1 bad game and the previous 3 are null and void? he wasn't the only one out there to not bring it tonight...He has played fine for us.

Posted by: capscoach | October 13, 2010 9:49 PM | Report abuse

Crosby has more hits than any Caps player currently, go figure. So when he's not scoring, at least he's providing SOMETHING.

Posted by: cstanton1 | October 13, 2010 9:49 PM | Report abuse

And Fehr was a lot better than several other players.

Ovechkin, Green, Fehr, Steckel were really good. Schultz probably had a good game, too.

Neuvirth was in another universe.

That's about it.

We were terribly under physical tonight, outworked tremendously for the most part and sloppy and out of unison in almost everything we did.

If not for a few players stepping up big, a bit of luck and an undermanned, underskilled opponent, we probably got run out of the building.

Go Caps!

There are probably some foolish people making fun of Crosby for not putting a lot of points up early but man, was he awesome in the game I watched the other day.

He's such a complete player and getting better every season.

There are roughly 4 components to a player: athleticism, talent, work ethic and hockey intelligence

Crosby has every single one of those elements going for him. He may not be the most athletic but he's fast and he keeps getting stronger, probably due to his work ethic and the fact that he's still so young and filling out.

Posted by: tmac2yao | October 13, 2010 9:59 PM | Report abuse

And you can wish for the Caps to someday be as physical as the Pens, cs: people in hell wish for ice water.

But it ain't happening. That simply ain't this team, ain't this system.

Posted by: stevie_in_gp

yeah i know. But why does it have to be so?

just like to point out the Pens are in a completely different realm when it comes to physicality than are the Caps. Win or lose, they make the opposition pay a price. And its that battle-hardened competitive nature that is sometimes the difference between winning or losing a series. The Flyers have tried over the past 2 or 3 yrs to bully the Pens like they bully the Caps. The Pens' response is much different. Frequently its the Flyers who end up getting bullied.

anyway, glad to see Engelland in the NHL getting some ice time. He's come from nowhere. He wasn't even a sure bet to graduate from the ECHL.

Posted by: cstanton1 | October 13, 2010 10:00 PM | Report abuse

I'll say that it was horrendous. No doubt about it.

Very lucky win.

If that wasn't an undermanned, undertalented team, we get run out of the building.

They outworked us, outexecuted us and we came out flat and uninspired and didn't do almost any of the little things we did well in the last game... at least not with any discernable consistency.

This wasn't just a bad performance, it was awful despite the results.

It's amazing how people forget the process if you win.

Posted by: tmac2yao | October 13, 2010 10:02 PM | Report abuse

of course there is room for criticism...there always is...but there were some good things and it seems like every mediocre game is a catastophe and proff about the inherent flaw in caps overall, but the triumphs never last long in our memory.

why is no one talking about the PK and how improved it is from last season...they were solid all night there...but we couldn't possly talk about something positive after they had an undeserved win.

Posted by: capscoach | October 13, 2010 10:03 PM | Report abuse

--tmac--

oh no you didn't! now you're gonna get railed for bein a caps hater and a pens lover. Black n white, you know.

but to chime in on that point, Crosby didn't develop in a vacuum. His development was assisted by the Pens providing him a strong cast of character teammates. I doubt very much Sidney Crosby would be out there finishing 5 or 6 checks against the Leafs if his teammates weren't doing the same thing. He's not David Backes.

Posted by: cstanton1 | October 13, 2010 10:03 PM | Report abuse

Because you aren't the GM and never will be. That's why it "has to be so."

(Now, I have no idea how old you are - entirely possible the Caps will be reconstituted in the future as a completely different team. But I prefer to enjoy this form - and criticize when appropriate - but not nit-pick every, single game. But that's your right, it's just legitimately annoying to have to read SOMETIMES. I'll take 2-1 to a much grittier team. It's an improvement.)

The Pens did lose again, this time to the Leafs 4-3, and have NOT yet won in their new building in 3 tries.

Posted by: MReilly9 | October 13, 2010 10:08 PM | Report abuse

I still can't believe how unbelievably owned we got by that depleted squad for the first 10 min of the 3rd. I really didn't think it was possible to look worse than we did in the 1st.

No team in this league should get owned that badly for that kind of stretch by any other team, forget that it was the depleted, undertalented Isles in our building.

The effort was missing tonight for about 40 minutes of the game from the majority of the players.

They didn't play hard and they didn't play smart.

Just 1 game but this season should be about developing the right habits like we saw in the Ottawa game. I thought we played even better in that game than against NJ despite the shot total.

Ottawa played much better and we worked hard and played smart for 60 min despite spending too much time in our zone. We were getting a total team effort in the d-zone, keeping them to the outside and doing good things in all 3 zones all night.

So far, we've had two unacceptable stinkers out of 4.

Posted by: tmac2yao | October 13, 2010 10:08 PM | Report abuse

it is soooo easy to compiment a player not on our team...of course crosby is a great player...but we don't need to worry about his flaws like we do Ovies b/c he's not ours.

@tmac2yao

we were undermaned as well...and the lines were shifted again...and I thought the Isles looked good (pretty good) the game they played (rolson made some very nice saves in the2nd) it would have been a close game for most teams. at least not a blow out

Posted by: capscoach | October 13, 2010 10:09 PM | Report abuse

That game reminded me of the way the Pens played the Caps in the playoffs - lots of pressure. The Caps lose that game (badly) if the Islanders have a full lineup.

Was the ice bad? I noticed a lot of pucks bouncing over Caps sticks and Caps players wiffing on shots.

Excellent, excellent point, cstanton.

He'd obviously still be great but in a lesser system with lesser coaches and mentors and he wouldn't develop some of the little things that not all superstars learn to do, esp. at such a young age.

Very valid point. I totally see what you're saying and agree.

You won't be so lucky.

I was raised on the Caps and am in my early 30s now.

My father worked for the Census Bureau and had season tickets from pretty much their first season in existence.

First sporting event I ever went to was a Caps game about 30 years ago now.

Posted by: tmac2yao | October 13, 2010 10:22 PM | Report abuse

everybody is going to be bringing their A game against the top team in the league from last year - the caps will be a measuring stick for everyone they play - even the undermanned and untalented teams.
it is up to BB to get the team to understand this and come out to play every shift of every game. that said - it will be an impossible task to play at that level for 82 games.
i'd rather have them win 2-1 while playing poorly - instead of the 5-4, 6-5 wins they were getting last year. this is the type of game that could serve them well come playoff time. poor play with attention to defense will keep them in many more games than the free wheeling run-and-gun they usually play

TB just finished off the Habs in OT.

Saw Halpy out there. I grew up with him. We played soccer together and went to school together for a while until he left Churchill to go somewhere else and focus on hockey.

I thought Halpern would be a good signing over Belanger. I like his skill set a little better.

Would've been a good 3rd line C who could move up and down as needed.

POSTGAME THOUGHTS:

Ridiculous that this team has come away with 4 points in the last two games. BUT - we'll take it. Wow. That again was not pretty tonight but this team found a way and took advantage late in the game on a STUPID penalty by the Islanders = MORON.

Stellar Goaltending - Neuvy continues to show why he is the man and he will get more of the workload this year. Hope to see Varly though in the next Saturday night.

Greenie - hope he's ok with the shoulder.

Power play: FINALLLLYYYYYYYYY. Just have to keep fighting and things will start coming together.

PENALTY KILL: Remains awesome. Keep up the aggressiveness and go at your opponents. No easy special teams goals this year. A fantastic job. Time to keep it going.

A couple days to regroup and make the trip to Nashville.

It's been a two point night.

ICE BREAKERS GOAL SHAKERS.
