LOL, she should be just full of insight :)

WTF, capsc?? Is that necessary?

Posted by: stevie_in_gp | November 8, 2010 7:06 PM | Report abuse

@capscapscaps2

Listen to her interview on Japers' Rink Radio on itunes. She actually knows quite a bit about hockey and about the Caps. She may do things differently from Tarik but I would hope so. Give her time to give CI her own imprint.

Let's have a poll and see!!!

Yea, OK.

Am I the only one thinking that inserting MaJo with Flash and Laich on the 2nd line could be a nice fit. Ovi-Backs-Semin seems to be doing just fine. Knuble ins't scoring but still working hard. He doesn't seem to be fast enough to keep up with the young guns.
Put Knuble on the fourth (the third have been clicking pretty well lately so i don't want to mess with that) with Bradley and maybe Hendricks as center.

Ovi-Backs-Semin
Laich-MaJo-Flash
Fehr-Gordon-Chimera
Bradley-Hendricks-Knuble

it might be harsh on knub's, but nobody should be guaranteed a spot on the top two lines and he simply isn't putting up numbers. And to me, Laich and Knuble seems to be too much alike to go well together on that second line. This would also mean that we wouldn't have to use flash as a center either which is a big plus.

Screw it. Put 21 on the first line

Posted by: Dizruption | November 8, 2010 8:07 PM | Report abuse

Ya know what? I've heard it from capscapscaps2 and from rblatch, cordially, and others as well. And that is a trace of sexism. The reactions to Katie's takeover of this blog have often been uncalled for. Rblatch, you called her out at 10:00 a.m. on Sunday (yesterday) for poor game-day coverage when the decision was made to put up a statistical analysis of Semin's contributions to the first line. You work 7 days a week? In fact, the pregame coverage thereafter was informative and excellent. I didn't hear these gripes when Tarik had the blog, but Tarik, supported by Lindsay, had great coverage only sometimes, and no greater than we're getting now.

I think it's possible you have a hard time getting your hockey coverage from a woman.

Posted by: Justafan | November 8, 2010 8:07 PM | Report abuse

@walle

the Ov/backs/semin line gets WAY to cute when they stay together for prolonged periods of time. They will have to be separated soon, and only put back when we need to score immediately.

@justafan

agreed that people are being way harsh on Katie, though I miss how Tarik used to link articles from the other teams we played papers. I also think TEB had more info on what was happening at practices...more than just line combos but also what they worked on, BBs mood, and general atmosphere for that day....maybe she needs more time to develop raports with the players and coaches.

Posted by: capscoach | November 8, 2010 8:52 PM | Report abuse

@capscoach, point taken. But I'm not seeing as many resources dedicated by the Post.com as we had last year, when Tarik was backed with much greater frequency by Lindsay and Geno, as we're seeing this year. Plus, you;ve got to give someone a chance to establish in the role.

Posted by: Justafan | November 8, 2010 9:02 PM | Report abuse

And to discount outright that the beat reporter won't be able to offer insights in a chat, that's what set me off.

Posted by: Justafan | November 8, 2010 9:04 PM | Report abuse

Walle: Excellent idea. Knuble you see won a Cup with the Wings (over Caps, 1998) as a 4th-line winger! So, in a what goes around, comes around kinda way, it would make sense for him to close his career exactly how he started it.

Meanwhile, the Kool Aid was flowing like the River Nile on that previous thread! And only joek443 was sipping goat's blood! Where are all the Dark Siders? It's no fun when everyone agrees! Undies2? PhilR? Huntsyforcoach? Where art thou? And thy fearless leader, cstanton1, where art him?

C'mon, guys, you're allowing the KA drinkers to become emboldened! Or maybe that's your plan - get them to all come out in the open and then cut them down!

God it will be ugly when the streets run red with Kool Aid!

@tom
I LOVE hockey and spend WAY to much time talking/thinking about it...but u do realize it is just a game? I mean all the koolaid and blood drinkers talk is a little much don't u think...my two fav. history teachers in high school were democrat and republican respectively living in the same house and working at the same school and managed to stay happy and married...maybe koolaid and goats blood compliment each other. Lets just try and get along.

Posted by: capscoach | November 8, 2010 9:21 PM | Report abuse

Aww, you're falling into their trap, tomin - c'mon, you've repeatedly proved you're better than that.

I'm no KAer, I just wanna see what it's like to be a REAL, die-hard McCarthyite, err, goat blood-drinker.

Purity of the party will be enforced!

@ Justafan - Do I work 7 days a week?? I sure do. I'm a farmer. :) And you can't call me sexist because all of my cows are females. :) I don't have any problem with getting hockey coverage from a woman my man, I just have a hard time getting bad to weak hockey coverage from anyone. But I'm sure she will think you chivalrous for coming to her rescue. I just get the impression that most of her postings are picked up off of other's tweets. And then they are a day late to boot. All you have to do is look at the number of comments which are way down from last year to realize the quality is not here as it was before. Probably you shouldn't shoot the messenger. But thanks for expressing your opinion.

Posted by: rblatch45 | November 8, 2010 10:17 PM | Report abuse

My milk and beef have really gone down in quality since last year. Weak, really.

Maybe you shouldn't be working seven days a week, rb - maybe you should be working "smarter, not harder" instead, or maybe we need someone who's a better farmer, with better contacts in the herd, than you.

But hey, don't shoot the messenger. You're just not as good as the last farmer.

RBlatch: I stand by my comment. You wrote this in July, the day Tarik announced he was leaving and before Katie even started:

"Katie - ugh. Get ready for the feel good fluff krap articles.

Cordially,
RBlatch"

capscoach: All those exclamation marks and you couldn't spot the levity?

Geez, if you have to explain it to someone, it just didn't work.

Seriously, maybe you should just skip all my posts in the future, I don't think we communicate.

Sorry for the miscommunication. Out.

@tominsocal
@Cstanton

I'm here. Does Bruce know his job is on the line if the boys fold to another weak team this year ?

Does GMGM ?????????????????(for levity!)

Cstanton, are you alive out there. We've got posters thinkin' this current group
can make a title run. Set 'em straight,oh great one.

RBlatch:

I always come to this site to read it, but rarely post on it (unless someone is knocking Canada which happens from time to time). I love reading comments from people like tominsocal and even SeminAllOverTheIce, but I rarely comment because of the fiasco that these comments have become. It has become so cut-throat that the fun of posting has become overshadowed by people being disrespectful toward one another on virtually every thread.

Anyways, the reason that I bring this up is that you pointed out that there are less comments this year. I guess I am just saying that that may be due to the continual war that has started on here, and not Katie vs TEB (but I may be wrong).

(Anyone else think Erskine is actually playing really well this year, or is that just me?)

talk about geez!

it is interesting that ever since people found out I am female my posts have not been taken nearly as well as they were before. I noticed this right away, but have tried to not say anything, but it is getting really annoying. I am not calling all u people sexist (more like some)but I have def. noticed this...maybe it's b/c people think I ran off cstanton (more likely than not) but I used to be able to joke around and post things and people wrote back and agreed or didn't and it was fun. Now every other comment I post is either ignored or I am told I am being rude, it doesn't seem to matter if people are rude to me though!

I won't stop posting b/c there actually are some nice people who have good insights and I enjoy hearing their opinions (even if I disagree with some) Gentleman...I apologize if this doesn't apply to u)

I am sure I will regret posting this, but oh well.
Does anyone know of other sites like this where u can discuss hockey without having your head rippd off for every positive comment of light hearted jab?

Posted by: capscoach | November 9, 2010 8:00 AM | Report abuse

@Aldred

u are correct that Erskine is playing way better this season...he said he worked a lot on speed last summer and although he is still slow, I think it helped.

I think he is good a a 6/7thD man. If we do get another defesmen this season, I think he will be bumped to 7th...but injuries happen and we can't have Sloan and/or Fahey in the playoffs.

Alzner and Carslon are coming along nicely, but I am hoping Erskine's play will encourage a litte more grit in the youngsters. Esp. Alzner...he gets pushed off the puck too easily.

capscoach,
Back in the day, when Boo and IRTR were here regularly, they provided some of the more insightful and thought provoking posts. Some posters here have driven good people away with the tone that they use on this board, turning discussion in to name calling and attacks. From the anonymity of their computer, they feel that they can be rude, disrespectful, and unfortunately sexist. Don't let what I hope is a very small minority sour you from your input here.

Posted by: _Mark | November 9, 2010 8:41 AM | Report abuse

@tom

I got your post bro, unfortunately some people are just too much on the defensive side to see humor.

I actually posted something similar the other day saying how we need "balance to the force", so to speak. Having everyone agree (for the most part) is more like having a church lock-in than a good debate.

@capscoach
I disagree that the SOB line "gets too cute" the longer they stay together. That has become their stereotype and usually only is talked about when they arent putting up 10 pts in a night. But as each one of those three have grown and developed, they have each become better individually and are more responsible. Their "cute and fancy" passing has always been part of that line, but as stated a second ago, is only talked about when they arent scoring in bunches.

I got a feeling BB will stick with this line a lot of nights and when he breaks them up it will be only temporary and not for long. I also think a break up will be more for lack of producing on other lines than them being "too cute". Think about it, if opposition only has to worry about that line, because the other lines cant buy a goal, BB will have to change things up to try to produce at least 2 scoring lines. Kind of hard though with no legit 2c...so until then, I fully expect to see lots of SOB.

Wow, really rb?

You stand by your one clearly sexist comment?

OK. Noted.

Posted by: stevie_in_gp | November 9, 2010 11:54 AM | Report abuse

I'm a female and I have also noted that coverage has gone down in terms of number and frequency of updates and I also sense a general lack of enthusiasm and dedicatin from Katie; this is in comparison with Tarik. She might know a lot about hockey, but the passion is just not there. I now rather check JP or even tweeter which have more timely updates. Tarik seemed to know exactly what we needed to here and he made sure we knew he was on the search for information or answers. Flame me if you want. Defending criticism of Katie's poor coverage just because she is a female, also amounts to sexism.

Posted by: Irreverent_inDC | November 9, 2010 12:37 PM | Report abuse

In case folks forgot, Tarik grew up playing hockey (same time and rinks Jeff Hapern did :)), and covered the New York Islanders for the NY Times 1996-1999 before coming here and eventually getting the Caps beat in 2005 (see: http://communities.canada.com/theprovince/blogs/kurtenblog/archive/2007/10/26/the-kb-talks-to-the-washington-capitals-beat-guy-tarik-el-bashir.aspx).

If folks want to carp at the Post for not hiring an equally seasoned sportswriter or one who dreamed as a kid of covering the Caps to succeed Tarik, I can understand. I myself beat the drum they oughta hire an experienced hockey-only columnist too.

I just find it unfair to judge a youngster who's not at the same point in her career timeline that Tarik was when he started covering the Caps in 2005. She writes well imho. Maybe the propensity to do the negative pieces some want so badly will come with the cynicism grown out of experience -- I hope not, cause that would likely mean the Caps playoff heartbreak continued and I'd like to see that end this year. :)
