Open thread: Capitals vs. Rangers

By Washington Post Sports Editors

logologo

Faceoff: 7 p.m., Verizon Center; TV: CSN; Radio: 1500 AM

Update: 6:37 p.m.
Mike Green skated in the warmup line rushes alongside John Erskine, so it looks like the two-time Norris Trophy candidate will play his second game out of the eight contests since he was struck in the head by a puck. By pairing Green with Erskine, the Capitals are probably better able to manage his minutes and gradually ease him back into the mix.

Based on warmup, here's what the lineup should look like against the Rangers:

Forwards
Ovechkin-Backstrom-Knuble
Laich-Johansson-Semin
Chimera-Perreault-Gordon
Hendricks-Steckel-Bradley

Defense
Alzner-Carlson
Schultz-Hannan
Erskine-Green

Goal
Neuvirth
Varlamov

Scratches: D.J. King and Tyler Sloan

A win tonight would be huge! LGC!

You know Tampa will get a W tonight, so we better too. It's a two point night, I can feel it.

Posted by: Doom_and_Gloom | February 25, 2011 6:30 PM | Report abuse

Heard two Dallas scouts @ the Phone Booth tonight.

Posted by: CAPSHOCKEY2 | February 25, 2011 6:33 PM | Report abuse

(How big was that 6 point road trip? I never thought I would have to ask that this late in the season.)

Posted by: Terptwin | February 25, 2011 6:35 PM | Report abuse

So I was given free ice level tickets to the Isles/Caps game tomorrow! Road trip here I come!

Posted by: capscoach | February 25, 2011 6:36 PM | Report abuse

I'm out here in Cali, unfortunately, NHL Center Ice has blacked out the game; anyone know how I can stream the game tonight?

Posted by: BoudreauDaPumpkinHead | February 25, 2011 6:38 PM | Report abuse

Coach.

You can't make that trip alone. it wouldn't be safe. What time are you picking me up?

Posted by: festus75 | February 25, 2011 6:40 PM | Report abuse

game should be on NHL network

Posted by: heathdog1119 | February 25, 2011 6:44 PM | Report abuse

@BoudreauDaPumpkinHead

The game is on NHL Network tonight, prolly why it's blacked out on center ice

Posted by: sk8ersublime | February 25, 2011 6:45 PM | Report abuse

@BDPH, I am sure atdhe.me will have it.

Posted by: icehammer97 | February 25, 2011 6:53 PM | Report abuse

@sk8ter & ice
Thanks for the info. I am trying the site that icehammer recommended, hopefully it works.

Thanks

Posted by: BoudreauDaPumpkinHead | February 25, 2011 6:59 PM | Report abuse

Just got a new Carlson jersey tonight, now would be a great time for him to have a great night. Also I am going to be very upset if we trade him now for many reasons.

Posted by: icehammer97 | February 25, 2011 7:03 PM | Report abuse

Backstrom is a stud.

I don't put much into +/- but it is more meaningful over time.

Backstrom has never finished an NHL regular season or postseason anywhere other than in the plus.

Posted by: tmac2yao | February 25, 2011 7:06 PM | Report abuse

And of course he's done that without missing a single game despite the migraine issues he's suffered through.

Backstrom is a stud.

Posted by: tmac2yao | February 25, 2011 7:07 PM | Report abuse

Not a good start here.

Posted by: icehammer97 | February 25, 2011 7:09 PM | Report abuse

I can't stand Henry

Posted by: rclow | February 25, 2011 7:10 PM | Report abuse

Chimmy in a fight? Looked like he got one good shot in.

Posted by: icehammer97 | February 25, 2011 7:12 PM | Report abuse

We're getting forechecked like nobody's business here early.

Posted by: tmac2yao | February 25, 2011 7:14 PM | Report abuse

8's biggest critic here says he's been awesome for several games in a row now. Looks like himself again physically at least.

Posted by: tmac2yao | February 25, 2011 7:15 PM | Report abuse

And that is why I didn't want Green playing tonight.

Posted by: icehammer97 | February 25, 2011 7:17 PM | Report abuse

That was bound to happen with all the o-zone time they were getting even if there was a missed call.

Posted by: tmac2yao | February 25, 2011 7:17 PM | Report abuse

looked like erskine with a deflection

Posted by: Capt_Kirk_in_AZ | February 25, 2011 7:18 PM | Report abuse

Not good. Green just came back from a concussion no matter what they tried to play it off as. I'd be surprised to see him back.

Posted by: CAPSHOCKEY2 | February 25, 2011 7:18 PM | Report abuse

Wow, thats nice. Terrible missed call that results in a goal for New York. Thanks refs.

Posted by: Dirtbag359 | February 25, 2011 7:19 PM | Report abuse

Back to 8 though, love to see him back into it physically and mentally. If he can play with his typical intensity and continue working on his hockey IQ, i.e., decision-making and what not, you can't ask for much more out of him.

Posted by: tmac2yao | February 25, 2011 7:21 PM | Report abuse

Hello all!
I have Cox and getting the game on Cox Sports channel #74, no HD though.

Posted by: BernieWolfeFan | February 25, 2011 7:22 PM | Report abuse

The Caps have jump tonight but have to figure out a way to counter execute against the Rangers forecheck. I don't think it's a work rate issue. It's execution.

Schultz...

Posted by: tmac2yao | February 25, 2011 7:24 PM | Report abuse

beautiful pass by 8... Hannan needs to do better with that.

8 needs to be careful trying to use fakes in the d-zone... an issue for him.

Posted by: tmac2yao | February 25, 2011 7:25 PM | Report abuse

don't forget to shoot on the PP. please no ovi for 2 minutes

Posted by: Capt_Kirk_in_AZ | February 25, 2011 7:26 PM | Report abuse

If Green doesn't have a concussion he's dam lucky. Pure head shot. He looked like a bobblehead.

Posted by: pokerface1208 | February 25, 2011 7:27 PM | Report abuse

If Backy can't take draws I'm surprised MJ isn't on the top line for that reason.

Posted by: pokerface1208 | February 25, 2011 7:28 PM | Report abuse

8 is in beast mode... doing it all right now pretty much.

Posted by: tmac2yao | February 25, 2011 7:28 PM | Report abuse

Going to be a long game with only 5 D the whole game.

Posted by: icehammer97 | February 25, 2011 7:31 PM | Report abuse

tmac2yao:
have you been hitting the kool-aid tonight? :)

Posted by: Capt_Kirk_in_AZ | February 25, 2011 7:32 PM | Report abuse

Amazing how the Rangers are describing the hit on Green.

thenyrangers New York Rangers
On goal, #Caps defenseman Mike Green injured himself trying to check Derek Stepan, and has headed to dressing room...

Posted by: icehammer97 | February 25, 2011 7:34 PM | Report abuse

Ouch... wer'e working hard but getting outexecuted in our end.

Posted by: tmac2yao | February 25, 2011 7:35 PM | Report abuse

Do we come back or are we heading for 7 nothing again?

Posted by: natresgroup | February 25, 2011 7:36 PM | Report abuse

I you all noticed, every Cap was within a 25 ft radius during that goal but missed the open man. Geez...

Posted by: BernieWolfeFan | February 25, 2011 7:37 PM | Report abuse

No Joe... Hendricks and Erskine, yes. Chimera, no.

Posted by: tmac2yao | February 25, 2011 7:37 PM | Report abuse

Enough Alex Semin. The guy has absolutely no heart. He was terrible on the PP.

I never root for the team to lose, but getting embarrassed on home ice might be just what the doctor ordered.

Posted by: underpants2 | February 25, 2011 7:39 PM | Report abuse

nice move by ovi - gotta get one on this pp

Posted by: Capt_Kirk_in_AZ | February 25, 2011 7:40 PM | Report abuse

@tmac2yao,
Agreed, I would swap Brads for Chimer in that group.

Posted by: BernieWolfeFan | February 25, 2011 7:40 PM | Report abuse

8 has been INCREDIBLE early... looks like a 2-time MVP.

If we get the next goal and figure out what we're doing wrong in our end, this game could turn around quickly.

Posted by: tmac2yao | February 25, 2011 7:40 PM | Report abuse

Not sure who's wearin #8 tonight but I like hime

Posted by: pokerface1208 | February 25, 2011 7:41 PM | Report abuse

My goodness, Laich... he looks bad on the perimeter. Plays break down with him regularly.

Posted by: tmac2yao | February 25, 2011 7:42 PM | Report abuse

him

Posted by: pokerface1208 | February 25, 2011 7:43 PM | Report abuse

That was pathetic.

Posted by: BernieWolfeFan | February 25, 2011 7:43 PM | Report abuse

overall a pretty p*ss poor period

Posted by: Capt_Kirk_in_AZ | February 25, 2011 7:43 PM | Report abuse

The PP is just god awful, still. We need some outside help.

Posted by: underpants2 | February 25, 2011 7:43 PM | Report abuse

Did anyone have a clue on that PP? I'm embarrassed for them. That was horrendous.

Posted by: billracer | February 25, 2011 7:44 PM | Report abuse

If Laich isn't camping out in front of the goalie, I don't want him on the PP. He doesn't have the composure to make good plays consistently with the puck.

A goal there would have been big. 21 screwed up twice on that PP... both times led to the puck getting cleared.

Posted by: tmac2yao | February 25, 2011 7:44 PM | Report abuse

Knuble cleared the puck for them once as well.

Posted by: icehammer97 | February 25, 2011 7:46 PM | Report abuse

The PP seems to ruin any mommentum or 5 on 5 creates. This far into the season and the PP is still horrible, not good.

Posted by: natresgroup | February 25, 2011 7:46 PM | Report abuse

No Joe... Hendricks and Erskine, yes. Chimera, no.

Posted by: tmac2yao

totally with you on this Tmac

he should have said Bradley, Erskine, Hendricks...

*shakes head*

Posted by: FrankM73 | February 25, 2011 7:46 PM | Report abuse

IDK Chimmy held his own in the fight, maybe he grew a pair over the break.

Posted by: icehammer97 | February 25, 2011 7:48 PM | Report abuse

Not feelin' it tonight boys. Heading over to Netflix. Tampa wins, Caps Lose, GM frets.

Posted by: festus75 | February 25, 2011 7:49 PM | Report abuse

Someone needs to go after Stepan for that retaliatory headshot on Green. He also went after Ovi the next shift and got him pretty good as well! Where's DJK when you need him the most!

Posted by: Walle | February 25, 2011 7:53 PM | Report abuse

Wow, what a highlight reel goal by Evander Kane. I never saw that. He's a special player. Speed, skill and grit - awesome combination.

Posted by: tmac2yao | February 25, 2011 7:58 PM | Report abuse

You can't do it once in a blue moon and call it a trait. Chimera is fast. That is all. That's his only clear cut NHL-caliber skill.

Posted by: tmac2yao | February 25, 2011 7:59 PM | Report abuse

The Rangers set the tone early when they established their forecheck handily on the road. Can't let that happen, esp. at home. It was reminiscient of the early stages of the ANA game. We won that game but that doesn't mean a thing. Can't let that happen.

Posted by: tmac2yao | February 25, 2011 8:01 PM | Report abuse

@tmac, I know I was just joking and wishing at the same time.

Posted by: icehammer97 | February 25, 2011 8:02 PM | Report abuse

I really like the way Hannan plays D during the game and especially after the whistle!

Forwards the attempt to drive the net are not allowed after a shot and are driving wide and then sent a message with his glove.

RESIGN HIM!

Posted by: FrankM73 | February 25, 2011 8:03 PM | Report abuse

After watching the replay on Stepan hitting Ovechkin you can clearly see him sticking out his leg to get Ovie! Effing idiot!

Posted by: Walle | February 25, 2011 8:03 PM | Report abuse

Eklund Hockey Buzz Eklund
Foote to the flyers "not working out.". Sounds like Adam doesn't want to play in the playoffs for anyone but Colorado.

I know the source but interesting considering how it looked earlier today.

Posted by: icehammer97 | February 25, 2011 8:04 PM | Report abuse

Hannan saved it from being 3-0.

Erskine skates behind the net and rifles a pass backwards through the crease. Not surprising that happened.

Love Erskine phsycial edge but he has to be smarter offensively and when it comes to timing pinches. Positionally, he isn't the soundest of defensemen.

Posted by: tmac2yao | February 25, 2011 8:05 PM | Report abuse

Semin. Loser

Posted by: cstanton1 | February 25, 2011 8:05 PM | Report abuse

@kcarrera - RT #Caps spokesman just said Mike Green is questionable to return to tonight's game.

Posted by: Terptwin | February 25, 2011 8:06 PM | Report abuse

I don't think in the nearly 30 yrs of watching Caps hockey I have ever disliked a player more than Semin. It'll be the happiest moment in my hockey life when I don't have to watch him anymore.

Rags with a strong road effort so far. They're doing the little things.

Posted by: cstanton1 | February 25, 2011 8:05 PM

He has his legs tonight at least.

Posted by: tmac2yao | February 25, 2011 8:06 PM | Report abuse

@Frank, I agree if the cost is right. Don't forget there are guys like Hal Gill available in FA this season. I like Hannan but there are other good options as well.

Posted by: icehammer97 | February 25, 2011 8:06 PM | Report abuse

And boom goes the dynamite. Good night thanks for coming.

Posted by: natresgroup | February 25, 2011 8:08 PM | Report abuse

you think that down 3 zip that Schultz would just paste someone behind our net when he had the chance. Instead he continues to treat every shift like an exhibition game.

Posted by: cstanton1 | February 25, 2011 8:08 PM | Report abuse

So can wee hold them under 7 this time? Or at least score one ourselves?

Posted by: icehammer97 | February 25, 2011 8:08 PM | Report abuse

Nice Semin. First, they just take the puck from you. Then, we all watch, and suspect Semin will take a dumb penalty. Was anyone at all surprised.

The Washington Capitals will never win a cup will Alexander Semin on their team. Forget it people. He is "hockey stupid". Incredibly talented, doesn't understand, and doesn't care.

Posted by: underpants2 | February 25, 2011 8:08 PM | Report abuse

The Caps want no part of these guys in the playoffs. It could be 4 and out.

Haha... I missed it. What'd he do this time?

-----------------

where do i start

and zmega has it right. The Caps don't want to have to play the Rangers. The Rangers D no matter who plays for them does a very good job of making life difficult for our forwards. Really good defensive work ethic even without Staal.

Posted by: cstanton1 | February 25, 2011 8:12 PM | Report abuse

Trade Semin, Schultz, picks as necessary, and prospects not named Kuz or Eakin and get a top line d-man or a 2C.

I'm talking about a longer term contract if possible, not just for this season. McPhee didn't do enough this past offseason for us to fill needs for this run at the deadline. Try to address a long-term need if possible.

Posted by: tmac2yao | February 25, 2011 8:12 PM | Report abuse

With how we play at home maybe it is better if we start on the road in the playoffs.

This team will be lucky to make it past the first round again. This is a team that can improve exponentially with proper coaching.

Posted by: Dirtbag359 | February 25, 2011 8:13 PM | Report abuse

I don't even care how the final score ends up today. its one game.

But you can't seriously pencil in guys like Gordo and Perreault and company upfront and expect the Caps team to be consistently tough to play against. How many more yrs of mediocre hockey from Boyd Gordon can we be forced to watch?

Posted by: cstanton1 | February 25, 2011 8:14 PM | Report abuse

Trying to find a bright side to tonight, and it is hard to do, at last we don't have to worry about the Caps being 5-1 in their last 6 going into the deadline and GMGM thinking we don't need anything.

Posted by: natresgroup

I do. You don't put together a lineup who isn't inherently hardnosed and not expect an up and down effort. It takes a certain toughness to be able to do the little things on every shift in every game regardless of the score and keep that quiet momentum moving forward. It doesn't just happen on its own. Same old story.

Then tomorrow we get to read about how the Caps need to just come out stronger in the 1st pd. so sad.

1. Mike Green should have never played tonight, that is all on mgmt.

2. If Backstrom can't take face offs why in the hell isn't there a Laich on his line that can actually WIN a face off.

3. Perrault was responsible for the first two goals, period....the guy has proven he is AHL talent at best.

this is where Dale Hunter would run the goalie or something to shake things up.

Actually he wouldn't wait for a 3 nothing deficit. He'd do it 1 or 2 goals down. It was like clockwork.

@icehammer97

This could be the best thing that could happen to this team. The problem is, McPhee/Leonsis have ignored the message since last April.

At what point do we admit that Alex Semin is poisoning this team?

Can someone please beat the snot out of Semin? Please? Just paste him, put him back on the injured shelf I don't give a krap. His effort is horrible and cancerous to the team. Ever since he came back there's been a dropoff. Too bad because Ovechkin is going back to his old self and looking better.

This team will never get close to the ultimate prize with a GM that hos no clue how to build a balanced, playoff-caliber roster.

He execute the easy part of the rebuild.

It's time to go find another GM to complete the process. He may fare no better but we aren't going to get over the hump with McPhee making the decisions so you have to try something different.

Yeah, great call on the two day rest. It obviously did the trick. They pass to empty space. They aren't winning the battles in the corners or along the boards. They don't play like they care.

GMGM hasn't seen enough to make a trade? Do you think he'll wait to see how they "Respond" tomorrow night in the Garden?

Give me a break. I am losing faith here, everyone. I hqave been positive all year...but enough is enough!

Why are we shooting from way outside of the net?!

Posted by: JCB9 | February 25, 2011 8:39 PM | Report abuse

I do believe I am coming over to the dark side on a couple things...

trade Schultz: when he's on positionally he's a good D, when he's off, he's AHL
Laich: man up dude... where the heck are you?
Semin: um, love the skills, would prefer the consistency and grit of a 2nd line winger
Poti: he's positional too... but when he's off he's bad, when on, he's above average.

as some one said, miles and miles of heart!

we need a tougher team...

Key point. That is one of the many results of not building a balanced roster. Way too many softies on this team, mentally and physically.

Posted by: tmac2yao | February 25, 2011 8:42 PM | Report abuse

Boy, this is ugly. Rangers just playing their game, seemingly without a care in the world. They have so much more room on the PP than the Caps it's embarrassing.

Did Loughlin really just say that luck has been the difference in this game? They're down 4-0 because of luck? He sounds like he's been taking lessons from BB. No matter what happens with this team, no one who matters sees anything really wrong. It's all just a matter of flipping a switch, getting a bounce or two and "she'll be right".

Oh well, at least I won't have to suffer through another agonizing blown series lead in the playoffs this year. They'll just go down in 4 or 5 -- if they make it at all -- and get it over with.

Posted by: FrankM73 | February 25, 2011 8:39 PM

It goes well beyond that. You also to have to look at the type of player he is in the context of the entire team makeup. I, for one, never said that Schultz had zero ability but the biggest issue is that he's extremely soft physically and in temperment and in compete level on a team that is already way on the wrong side of those traits from an overall perspective.

I still can't believe how wide open Stepan was right in front of our net for that last PP goal.

Even with the defensive lapses, the disturbing thing about this performance is how the "offense", after the Rangers' third goal, degenerated into nothing but myopic one-on-one attempts. Here it is late February and they're still not playing together or trusting the system. There is just no way that can work. And there's no excuse for letting it get that way.

This team, like this franchise, has no leadership at all.

Posted by: fanzee71 | February 25, 2011 8:54 PM | Report abuse

Greenberg just posted a video of Stepan's headshot to Green. Check it out on RMNB. There's no question - that hit was premeditated. Where the *&@! were the refs on that one - and on Green's earlier cross-check?

Posted by: Terptwin | February 25, 2011 8:54 PM | Report abuse

Semin, Schultz and any other player not named Backstrom, Ovechkin, Johansson, Carlson, Alzner, Green, Erskine or Hendricks should be made availabe for trade.

Throw in one of the goalies.

Throw in picks as necessary.

Throw in prospects not named Kuznetsov or Eaking as necessary.

Use that to get a legit top paring d-man in the mold of a Shea Weber. Not necessarily him but a physcial presence with legit top paring d skills.

Or get that much needed 2C. I don't mind Spezza's contract or his rumored issues. At 27, he'd address our needs long-term there. He's a 1C or 2C. If not him, get somebody else using the assets mentioned earlier.

Two years from now, you have this skeleton or something similar:

Ovechkin-Backstrom-Fehr
?-Spezza or another 2C-Kuznetsov
?-Johansson-?
Hendricks-Eakin-?

?-Green
Alzner-Carlson
Erskine-Orlov

Varlamov or Neuvirth

Fill in those "?" along the lines of this (don't get hung up on names... I'm talking about gritty players that could meet our needs of getting some balance):

Ovechkin-Backstrom-Fehr
Neal-Spezza-Kuznetsov
LW with grit-Johansson-Downie type
Hendricks-Eakin-Gritty RW (Bradley type but tougher)

Weber type-Green
Alzner-Carlson
Erskine-Orlov

Varlamov or Neuvirth
Affordable vet backup

You have 3 high-paid forwards and 2 high-paid d-men. I'm defining high-paid as making $5 mil or more.

I didn't do the numbers but you have several younger players that would be affordable. If you can fill those "?" with the types of players I listed above at reasonable costs, it may be doable without having crunched numbers. If I'm off a little, make minor tweaks to expectations and fill needs as close as possible.

We'd need Fehr to stay healthy and take another step forward or look elsewhere there as well.

Regardless, it doesn't take a complete overhaul, just the proper tweaks by a GM that has a clue how to build a balanced team. My roster above could still use more grit but it's a lot closer to where it needs to be if we want to go from pretenders to contenders.

Gotta get rid of McPhail first though.

Posted by: tmac2yao | February 25, 2011 8:55 PM | Report abuse

Yes trade Semin. One burst of brilliance followed by a looooong period of no show and, worse, penalties. Maybe he could be developed into a more consistent player but he does not seem to jell with this team.

WHY isn't McPhee announcing a trade. WHY? Can someone venture a guess of what he is thinking? Could he be waiting to acquire someone right before the playoffs? He must not believe that adding talent is the solution. What is it then?

So didappointing. I thought they had turned it around. Maybe they'll start tomorrow.

Not sure if this is in response to me or not. The play I'm talking about is when Stepan hit Green in the head and likely gave him a concussion. That is 100% on Erskine. If you watch the play, 4 for a brief second acts like he's gonna go after Stepan but then Green starts to move & act like he's ok so 4 does NOTHING and tries to get back in the play. He shoulda jumped him right there, whistles blow, multiple penalties and most importantly no goal for NYR. 100% on 4. I like him too but if you're gonna hit 1 ya gotta hit em all.

giving no effort is something this team has done extremely well this year.

it's that type of thing we can build on for our future.

Hot goalie alert and The Rangers moved their feet and they got some good bounces. We did not put in a 60 minute effort. We were hungover. Our superstar is playing like a 5 million dollar player. Green got hurt. We had only five defenseman. Our forwards all had the flu. The ice was bad. We were too comfortable playing at home. Our coach gave our game plan to The Rangers. On and on and on and on. Anyone have any other excuses.

Well, the ultimate leader of a team is the GM. He has the biggest influence on the on-ice product and is the primary decision-maker when it comes to hockey matters.

In that sense, we are leaderless. Certainly without a quality leader.

Then there is Fat Ass Ted who is loyal to a fault. His leadership skills need to be questioned as well for still not getting off his ginormous ass and making a real change.

Posted by: tmac2yao | February 25, 2011 9:21 PM | Report abuse

8 shutouts in 42 games. This will be 9 in 43. That's 1 in every 5 games!!!!!! That is beyond inexcusable.

Normally, I try to maintain an even keel. I was optimistic that things were changing after the last couple of games. Well, it was very short lived optimism.

Hope the Caps like playing in front of empty seats. The folks left don't even know that they came for a hockey game.

ok...is there ANYTHING good that can be taken out of this game?

1) No effort at all

2) Green got hurt again (if it is a consussion again or a furthering of his first concussion he may be gone for a long time, possibly the rest of the year)

3) Shut out AGAIN at home.

4) 5-7-6 in the last 18 games at home

5) I can't decide who had the worst game tonight.

Embarassing

He's always there when they need a shoulder to cry on or a softer pillow at night. I'm sure right now in the locker room, he's handing out pats on the back and reassuring the boys that they'll "get 'em next time" before handing out their jammies.

Any other team in the NHL would have made them pay.

If I were Leonsis, I'd take the boys to Rite Aid tomorrow and buy them all Kotex pads.

It was that bad. Absolutely disgraceful display of a professional sports team.

D-bag of the night goes to Evason for the hot goalie insinuation during the "Bite of the Night."

Hey remember when our "Star" Defenseman came back for his first game in god knows how long it seems, and someone gave him an elbow tothe damn head and no one on the team did anything about it? That was great.

Compare to when a team full of AHLers in PIT came to the defense of one of the most reviled players in hockey, Matt Cooke, for a *Clean* hit.

That should be all you need to know about this team of spineless, over-paid, nothings.

That would be quite epic to see after the game.

It would be entirely appropriate, too.

The softest vag after each game should be interviewed with a pink bonnet on his head for the world to see.

I m'er f'n guarantee that would induce some change. Nobody would want to be caught wearing that crap... well, Schultz would probably bend over and take it... he might even realize that he likes it... a lot.

tmac: I'll be honest. I read your first post. I just wish someone on the Caps tonight was as angry as I was for about five seconds. Then I read the apology, so all is fine.

I honestly can't believe this team mailed it in like that tonight.

(Sound of doorbell)

A Washington Caps player runs to the door and opens it. On the front steps, he spots a shivering postal service worker.

Postal Service Worker: "Yeah, we got a call for a package to be picked up at this address."

The Caps player hands an envelope, marked "Tonight's Game," to the postal service worker.

"Mail it in," says the player, and then he shuts the door in the postal worker's face.

This game was uglier than Charlie Sheen's behavior.

Posted by: StanleyCap | February 25, 2011 10:28 PM | Report abuse

This is my theory of what went wrong with this game: it was played at home, the single players were out partying at their local haunts and then, later, getting lucky. Some here might get excited as they think of lesbian dalliances, but I don't want to go there. That, coupled with the days off, led the single players to believe that they were on holiday and therefore not required to work. In fact it was really quite good of them to come to the rink and suit up for tonight's game.

"They should fire me." ? - GMGM
"I should fire them." ? - Leonsis

I would like to think this game has greater implications then just losing 2 pts but do not think that will happen. This is bull $#!+ but in this organization, saddly it does not roll downhill.

I actually brought up something like that a few weeks ago but got almost no takers.

I challenged anybody to be as objective as possible and go line by line, position by position, assuming both rosters are at full strength, and figure out which player you would take from each lineup.

My final lineup would probably have about 3 or 4 Caps and the rest would be Flyers.

You can't take a 1st line forward from the Caps and say that he's an upgrade over a 2nd or 3rd line forward for the Flyers. It has to be the same position on the same line for each team.

Wow, I figured I would be pushing it.

Then there would probably be even more room for upgrades.

I'm not saying my lineup is perfect but using that skeleton and filling in the missing links with the right role players would move this team closer to legit contention, imo.

The problem is that McPhee fills those gaps with the likes of Flashies and Chimmies and Schultzies and Gordies and Matty Ps and other players that resemble the female reproductive organ.

Thanks for taking the time to do that.

The Caps are very undisciplined.

Watching them reminds me of the Redskins. Sloppy passes, no offense, no defense, lots of penalties.

Sound familiar???

Seriously, time to show BB the door. I keep hearing how lazy thier practices are and it's showing on the ice. They are VERY soft and can't beat the good teams. They have regressed like 3 seasons at least.

People keep thinking that they are just going to turn on a button and everything will magically align itself. Personally, I just don't see it happening.

This is not a good team.

Yea, Green is feeling the insult to go with the injury. A soft rook decked him and didn't have to come close to answering for it.

That kind of stuff happens only on super soft teams run by super soft coaches on rosters constructed by clueless GMs.

The Caps are pretty clearly the softest team in the league. I can't think of a clear cut softer team at this point.

The sad thing is that if we were even average in terms of team toughness, the core skill would shine and we wouldn't be perennial postseason disappointments.

McPhee... sigh.

Like I said the other day, those of you with your heads still in the clouds are going to come around sooner or later about McPhee, Boudreau, various roster players, etc... You'll still chime in when the Caps win some games but in the end, as long as McPhee is running the ship, you will ultimately join us on the dark side.

fanohock has been here a long time. He has an opinion more rosy than many, but always conducts himself with respect to others.

When you criticize the team and then do the name calling, all you do is make the criticizers look bad.

vermontcaps is very critical of Boudreau but never does name calling.

Let's pretend we were all in a bar drinking and watching the game. Would we call each other names like that? No.

Not that I'm better than anyone, but I never make fun of anyone in the caps org for personal appearance or anything.

There is a tremendous difference between criticizing performance and "making fun." OK, so I said Leonsis should take them to Rite Aid and buy them all Kotex maxi-pads. Maybe that is over the top too.

Sorry if I am guilty of imposing my own morality standards.

I don't know if the Caps players are trying to send Ted Leonsis a message; but the fans sure did by leaving the building EARLY! Even Joe B and Locker were forced to comment on that and those guys are homers. I watched the entire debacle from my couch. A noticeable lack of boos at the end because all the fans in the building at that point were Ranger fans. No self-respecting star free agent with a no trade clause will want to come to the Caps. Why get beat up for nothing? It's time to make some blockbuster changes, and not just with the players. Are you listening Ted? The Caps have turned into the Wizards. The Wizards have turned the corner into oblivion. The Caps no longer respect the coach and their play shows it. The Wizards don't have one and their play shows it. After the next trade, the Caps will turn the corner...

I still think Green is a great player. Hendricks maybe. Other than that I would swap and yes OVI too. His play is going the other direction. He has in my opinion realized his best years. POSTMORTEM I MEAN GAME THOUGHTS:
Well you can officially put me on the Boudreau needs to go bandwagon. First don't give me the "first game after a road trip" excuse. You had three days and then I hear during the game about the Caps not having their legs under them???? Come the F*** on. Boudreau gave this team 2 of the 3 days off - BS. I'm sorry but that doesn't cut it.

You should've had them out there every day knowing how you played your last game at home.

Oh hey Boudreau - we are over 60 games into the season. OVIE AT THE POINT IS BEING DEFENSED AND DOES NOT WORK. Put people who are big down in front. And stop putting him out there for a full two minutes. Ridiculous.

@TMAC - ROTFLMAO I gotta give you props. Ice drifters goal givers. I cheer this team when they're on and I'll give it to them when they're down. That's real good LOLOLOL. Love it.

I hope GMGM is throwing all caution to the wind and working the phones after this debacle. I'm sorry I don't want to hear either the 'oh it was an off night or the Rangers got the bounces.' Sure some bounces went their way and Lundquvist was strong but c'mon. THis team looked like the same disorganized bunch that was here the last time at home. Can I have the road Caps back please??????

It should be a wake up call now that the Rangers have pasted this team twice this year. There is no toughness at all. The softness of this team continues to shine through. Leonsis needs to wake up and start seeing that if McPhee can't.

This was an utter disgrace to come out put on this kind of performance. Verizon center is not the house of horrors anymore.

Bottomline: I almost want to hope this team falls out and doesn't make the playoffs just so it might get Boudreau fired. Plus if this team made the playoffs right now - I don't care who they play - they're going out in 5 or 6 games.
It's the sad reality right now at this very moment. Sure things can change in a month - the only way that starts to happen is by making some trades.

That shirt motto about staying angry - please. How about - Show up and play tough.

It's been a Myers and Coke kind of night. Bartender: another please. Better yet - make it a Long Island Ice Tea.

According to Al Koken, Mike Green will not travel with the team.

Also, the ENTIRE coaching staff were kept behind for a long time after all the players had left the building.

I consider myself a loyal fan, not a bandwagoner but I couldn't have been any more miserable than sitting through that game tonight. I really don't want to go back until we either have a new coach or a dramatic change in roster. Enough is enough.

I bash 8 as much as anybody but he's pretty much resembled who he should be for the last 4 games or so. Still, I do wonder if those issues you list aren't part of the problem, along with the environment created in this organization where a superstar can too often do what he wants when he wants, on and off the ice.

About 4 months ago I said joek443 was "idiotic" but have felt bad since and have been nice to him. As funny looking as God made me, I certainly have no place to say something about anyone else.

It's games like this that really try our patience, because it truly looked like the caps players out there care less than us fans. Honestly, all 160 lbs of me, there's no way I can let Stepan get away with that. I would have put my stick in his mouth and drawn blood and they can give me the fkn 4 minutes. Why couldn't one of our players done something? Instead we look like the French Army in WWII.

Drop the rifle and run.

I will be surprised if there are any league repercussions.

Posted by: FloridaCapsFan | February 25, 2011 11:10 PM | Report abuse

He reported both.

First he said that BB came out and said that Green will not travel with the team. You could tell Koken was hedging his words when talking about Mike, but I had the feeling I think alot of people are thinking: he may be out for the rest of the year.

Then he went onto talk about the coaching staff being kept behind.

God I hope soething BIG happens...

BTW, my daughter just got home from work and was going to watch the game on DVR and I'm forbidden from cussing at home but I said, "Theresa, don't bother watching even five seconds tonight of the Washington Fkn Capitals."

Did anyone catch Keith Jones comment about BB? He was basically giving a compliment in which he said BB is not known as the smartest coach in The NHL but yet when he called that timeout it was intelligent. It was the Pittsburgh game on Monday. So a pretty good pundit who has more inside knowledge calling BB not the smartest coach and then saying something nice. Bet Jones knows the full story about BB. Maybe us fans are not such morons.

I have rooted for this team for 30 years, but watching elbows to the head go w/o retaliation is almost the limit. I quit on this team for 2003-04 and didn't order Center Ice due to my extreme dislike for Jagr. I'm not there yet. But I'd much rather we have more guys like Scott Hartnell who show up and play than guys who just lick the stamp and put it on the envelope.

If any Caps player had crosschecked Stepan in the head and put him on the ice, I would have considered the 6-0 loss a success.

If I had a No Trade Clause I think I would decline coming to the Caps. Unless the team you're on is in a bad situation, why come here? The team has big issues, the coach and GM are (or at least should be) in jeopardy this summer. Unless it's just a rental, you would be entering a potentially unstable environment and may find yourself with a new GM, coach, and system next fall...

Just the other day mrstominsocal1 was saying how said it was sad that "Lilly" died last year, bit I immediately said that if she hadn't, we wouldn't have the two brothers, Rudy and Toki.

Thanks fellow pet owners. Or do they own us? I'm probably going to get another Black Lab because for a big dog they are just so darn good with people of all ages. Thing with them though is you spend the 1st year cussing at them because they're chewing everything up, then you spend the next 4 years chasing them around the county because they just love to run. Then they finally become that perfect bud when they're 5 but they tend to have major health issues, typically beginning with joints, by the time they're 10. People keep trying to convince me to go with another breed but Labs just have me. Just like all of you have your preference.

As far as one of the assistants taking over with the interim tag, no, I wouldn't want Evason. I don't think Lundqvist was even challenged tonight. When they mentioned he had 35 saves I was amazed because I really didn't remember seeing even 35 low quality shots launched at him. So if it had to be one of the assistance I would go with Woods. Definitely just the better of the two with plans of going outside of the organization to find the new bench boss.

Brand spanking new and the window crank, yeah, you had to be rich to have power windows back then, broke off in my hand. Later in the same trip the clutch went out. The car had a whopping 200 or so miles on it. That Russian Machine definitely broke.

Posted by: fanohock1 | February 25, 2011 11:55 PM | Report abuse

Cap'n: Well, we had six cats in Florida. Six! Then I found out about the coyote "issue" out here. Three of the six cats were outside cats, and I knew we could neither have six cats inside nor let the three cats get eaten. So we left three cats behind in FL with neighbors. One was really special, but we had no choice. His picture is on the mantle and he with my daughter's mother-in-law.

So I was assigned to ferry the three cats to CA when I made the final move. Had to put them in carriers and pick them up in LAX and take them to hotel etc. One cat, Lilly, about 12, was always the scaredest cat in the world. She stopped eating, lost weight and died in three months, a month after we moved into the house (while I was on travel, they sent me a final picture of her).

So I call home from FL and I say, let's get another. By the time I get home, a week later, they have this kitten in the house. He has weird circles under his eyes and immediately I'm like, "Rudolph Valentino!" Then a few weeks later mrstom and children (whom you met) are talking about Rudy's brother back at the shelter so I say, "Let's go have a look at him," and of course we bring home Toki.

I will tell you this: I am blessed in life at 53 years old that the hardest I ever cried was once losing a cat. I hope I never have to cry like that again. I avoided pets for 20 years because "they always die" and finally with three small kids they wore me down and a year later that wonderful cat died before he hardly had a chance to get his life going.

The next cat was named Dino after #22.

I wonder how much money BB makes off of the carpet cleaning company. Probably more than I make in a year. Wow that is depressing.

I would take Evason before Woods but I almost think at this point you need to go outside. I'm not sure firing BB and bringing an assistant up as "interim" is the best way to head into the playoffs.

I am just going to give up. My computer is too slow to keep up with the wit of this board.

Why no post game recap from Katie? It has been 2.5 hrs since The Passion of the Caps (I do apologize religious folks) concluded. Is she really that slow? I feel like Tarik would have had something up for us.

It doesn't get much worse then loosing 13-0 in two games to one opponent while racking up your 9th offensive shutout on the year. It's time to go with an interim coach and see how that works before strongly considering bringing in an outsider during the offseason.

Well, you knew it was gonna be bad when it was Chimera who tried to set the tone early. First it was the rookie Subban who came into our building and shamed us/Chimera, and tonight it was rookie Stepan who wreaked havoc on our ice. How many times have I written about the Caps not supporting each other?? I'll spare everyone...

To be fair, Erskine was on the ice when Green was hit and everyone knows he would've responded if he thought it cheap or borderline. Frankly, I wish more of our forwards would throw some weight around instead of just absorbing the oncoming hit. If DJK did that to Letang, I'd be here screaming that Letang shouldn't lead with his face when going into the boards.

And speaking of DJK, I'm sure glad we got the double-dose of Steckel/B.Gordon. Gordon was -2 and on the ice for both pp goals given up. Glad we were able to utilize his defensive prowess instead of watching DJK beat the crap out of Prust, as he was the only Ranger in the lineup capable of standing up to a rampaging DJK.

The good news? Johnny E. was once again the best Caps dman. Led backline in hits, knocked Fedotenko out of the game, and was -1 only because of the bumbling shift by MP, Laich, and Gordon. Callahan wanted nothing to do with the Lumberjack when they came together late in the first.

BB's chosen ones all looked bad tonite, with Carlson particularly brutal (matching Gordon for being on the ice for 4 Rags goals). Did I read somewhere on this blog someone suggested firing coach BB?? Hmmm, very interesting....

and btw, Katie sucks in Capitals coverage! already 2 and half hours after the game and still nothing on craps insider. Tarik always had some updates from press conferences.

I am expecting McPhee to fire Boudreau and put himself behind the bench.

His first decision will be to make the "scarf" a regular part of the caps jersey.

Tom, I thought of that as a possibility. Both Murray and Lamoriello have done it to name a couple. Are George's gonads big enough to pull this move off though? Then after a second thought, that possibility blew off in the wind.

BTW, I can't wait to hear Ted's take on the gem they laid on the ice tonight. We just need the power play to get in gear and everything will be sunshine, rainbows, and kittens (no offense meant Tom).

vermont: I have posted for sometime that Carlson is heading the wrong way on the learning curve. He is providing nothing offensively and killing us on the PP ("And the puck skips over Carlson's stick! Again!). This is what happens when you over rely on rookies. (As many of us warned! But, hey, we're not IN THE GAME, so we don't know!)

People will talk about bad luck with injuries, but didn't the Rangers just whip us into severe submission w/o Gaborik and Staal?

Someone posted earlier, let's hope we don't play the Rangers in the Playoffs.

Or Boston. Or Habs. Or Atlanta. Or Flyers...

"People keep thinking that they are just going to turn on a button and everything will magically align itself. Personally, I just don't see it happening."

I admit it, I was one of those people, the team just has too much potential...but in my mind they have stopped listening to the coach because they don't believe in the system. BB may be a good coach but he has lost this group. I'm not too optimistic that this team, as is, can fight through a 7 game series...but hopefully I'm wrong. Brutal night anyway!

Posted by: summitwalker | February 26, 2011 12:22 AM | Report abuse

OK, let's have a poll.

I'm saying the best fkn thing (had to cuss cuz I'm angry, unlike Laich and Caps) the team could do would be:

Leave the fkn (sorry) coaches behind! That's right, send the team to Long Island w/o BB, Evason or Woods!

And, get this, we get Mike Knuble to serve as player-coach tomorrow night! And, if we win, he gets to run the club again Monday!
So, Caps fans, vote:

Does the team have a better chance to win Saturday night with:

A) Boudreau
b) Knuble

I'll bet on Knuble!

Posted by: tominsocal1 | February 26, 2011 12:28 AM | Report abuse

Tom, I'll go with Knuble. Nothing like a kooky eye to convince you that the man screaming in your face is indeed serious/crazy.

Posted by: eorr53 | February 26, 2011 12:32 AM | Report abuse

Well, since katie hasn't posted, let me put the quotes:

"What was the problem tonight?"

"We didn't put pucks on net and give 60 minutes of effort."

"What will you do differently against the Islanders?"

"We'll put pucks on net and give 60 minutes of effort."

"OK. Thanks."

You might ask which Caps player gave the interview.

You might ask, but does it matter?

@tom

BTW, my name's Tom, too...rock on! As for Carlson, I wonder why he gets absolutely no mention whenever I hear "analysts" talking about up-and-coming rookies around the league. Was his not getting invited to the rookie skills bit at the All Star Game really a snub, or he just overvalued and hyped in DC?

Sorry bro, Hannan was a stud tonight. I'm not just talking about him breaking up the THREE on 1!

Erskine can't get it just b/c he did nothing on the Green hit. I don't care what you say. I agree with you on him 99% of the time. This is the 1%. I don't give a rip what he saw, he saw enough to start in that direction after the hit then stopped. Sorry bro, can't have it both ways.

I remember they said one rep was needed from each team, so several players with no business to beat out carlson got to be on the rookie team.

Bro, I love your passion for #4 but you're defending the defenseless tonight. Watch the replay. Not only did he look straight at he hit the WHOLE time, after Green hit the deck he points his stick to a fellow Cap telling him to go get the puck, then he goes with a "lighter cross check attempt at Stefan than Sasha plays bongo's". C'mon man!

These players are young, rich and having a great time outside of hockey. Pls. google, under the google link images tab, "alex ovechkin party"

That says it all. BB the bird caller is the permissive dad, the Caps need a hard ass as coach.

The Caps players are a mainstay in the DC bar scene, even during the season. Tons of talent, little character or motivation.
