Man I forgot how annoying it is watching a game on VS with something to do at night. Not gonna get to see much more then two periods before I have to go to my own game.

Its really hard to forgive not knowing the words to the Anthem. In MSG no less? Promoting your new solo act no less?

ULTIMATE FAIL!!!

Who sang the anthem and failed?

Anyone else hate the angle the regular camera is at? The rink looks so thin to me and dark.

Sorry for the trip post. So we have King in the game and Green is fighting? Also Knuble just can't buy a goal right now.

Posted by: icehammer97 | November 9, 2010 7:50 PM | Report abuse

why MIKE why?

Posted by: wtf_e_fehr | November 9, 2010 7:51 PM | Report abuse

Yeah its dark. Why is Green fighting?

Posted by: jdove80 | November 9, 2010 7:52 PM | Report abuse

Will Knuble ever score again?

@Forecheck22 the former lead singer from bare naked ladies.

Can someone tell these guys we are not a fighting team. If the other team wants to fight then fine send out King or Hendricks or someone to fight but why are we taking outselves out of our game to play their type of game?

'Maybe it was Steve Page.

Posted by: jdove80 | November 9, 2010 8:06 PM | Report abuse

Can someone tell me what Green is thinking? He must have himself in fantasy and need PIM with 7 already.

Posted by: icehammer97 | November 9, 2010 8:08 PM | Report abuse

Maybe Green could try playing instead of sitting in the box.

Posted by: jdove80 | November 9, 2010 8:09 PM | Report abuse

Schultz is literally and figuratively huge on this 5 on 3.

Posted by: redskinsux | November 9, 2010 8:14 PM | Report abuse

Went back and looked at the second goal and while Alzner blew it I am worried about how lax Neuvy looks on the faceoff. He wasn't even ready if it was shot off the faceoff. Having seen so many goals go in off faceoffs he needs to fix that before it bites him in the backside.

Posted by: icehammer97 | November 9, 2010 8:16 PM | Report abuse

That is what happens when people try to avoid checks. You jump out of the way instead of taking it like a man and you expose your legs. Simple as that.

Posted by: icehammer97 | November 9, 2010 8:19 PM | Report abuse

Yeah he needs to be more aware than that. Teams look like they are at a wrestling match and not a hockey game.

Posted by: jdove80 | November 9, 2010 8:19 PM | Report abuse

Alzner won't forget that mistake easily. It happens to the best of 'em though.

The Caps are doing a lot of good things despite losing.

Posted by: wtf_e_fehr | November 9, 2010 8:27 PM | Report abuse

You can outplay a team for 20 minutes and make a couple of mistakes and find yourself down. That's hockey. Sometimes you get away with those mistakes. Other times you don't.

I'd still rather see the Caps doing the right things for the majority of a period (which was the case in the 1st) or game and lose than play horribly for the majority and luck their way to a win.

Avoid the dumb and untimely penalties and silly mistakes and keep doing all the other stuff your doing right.

Posted by: tmac2yao | November 9, 2010 8:29 PM | Report abuse

I have that feeling.

That if NYR isnt up to snuff, this one could get ugly.

Posted by: wtf_e_fehr | November 9, 2010 8:30 PM | Report abuse

Maybe if Knuble keeps this up the Caps will waive him and try to see if Bill Guerin can still play. He had 21 goals last year and would give us someone who won a Cup as more than just a 4th line player.

Posted by: icehammer97 | November 9, 2010 8:32 PM | Report abuse

The Caps were working their tails off in that period, winning puck battles, forechecking effectively, engaging physically, etc...

A few bad plays cost them but we did enough to score 2 or 3 goals easily at the other end.

The key is to keep doing the good stuff they were doing and not get frustrated and press because of the score. It's only the start of the 2nd coming up here.

Alzner probably won't whiff like that for the rest of the season and Knuble and Backstrom will start finishing sooner than later.

Posted by: tmac2yao | November 9, 2010 8:35 PM | Report abuse

Knuble is doing a lot of little things well even though the goals aren't coming yet and the goals will come. If it gets to the point where he's not doing anything well in addition to not scoring, then it might be time to talk about moving on.

Posted by: tmac2yao | November 9, 2010 8:41 PM | Report abuse

I know tmac, I was mainly seeing if anyone would agree and give up on Knuble so quick into the season.

Posted by: icehammer97 | November 9, 2010 8:43 PM | Report abuse

Plus I would like to see us get someone who knows what it takes to win a Cup to help us in the playoffs.

Posted by: icehammer97 | November 9, 2010 8:45 PM | Report abuse

Give up on him? no... move him to a lower line yes.

Posted by: jdove80 | November 9, 2010 8:46 PM | Report abuse

Nice to see them rewarded here. They've played a good game tonight for the most part.

Posted by: tmac2yao | November 9, 2010 8:46 PM | Report abuse

Man what a strange game. Erskine with a clean slapshot over the goalie and now the friggin boogie man beats Neuvy clean with a slapper.

Posted by: jdove80 | November 9, 2010 8:48 PM | Report abuse

Way to go Big Johnny. Who would have thought in the last three games we get goals from Sloan and Erskine. Boogard? Really?

Posted by: icehammer97 | November 9, 2010 8:48 PM | Report abuse

WTF Sloan

Posted by: nicety251 | November 9, 2010 8:48 PM | Report abuse

Posted by: jakopz | November 9, 2010 8:49 PM | Report abuse

Posted by: icehammer97 | November 9, 2010 8:49 PM | Report abuse

Neuvy aint lookin so hot either.

Posted by: jdove80 | November 9, 2010 8:50 PM | Report abuse

Posted by: jdove80 | November 9, 2010 8:51 PM | Report abuse

This is what should only be described as a team DISEASE... even guys like Sloan thinks he's Paul Coffey and tries to pinch in instead of making a safe play and BACK OFF.

Posted by: joek443 | November 9, 2010 8:51 PM | Report abuse

I think Neuvy's confidence has taken a hit.

@icehammer, ummm....no.

That last goal tilted this game clearly for the first time tonight.

The Rangers were on their heels for most of the game up to that point. Now they're feeling it.

Posted by: icehammer97 | November 9, 2010 9:00 PM | Report abuse

The Caps are working really hard tonight.

They've just made several unusually bad unforced isolated mistakes.

There's Knuble.

Posted by: tmac2yao | November 9, 2010 9:00 PM | Report abuse

Neuvy is a disaster out there right now. A rebound machine

Posted by: jdove80 | November 9, 2010 9:03 PM | Report abuse

You could see Alzner about to get skated around there. He needs to work on that. It's a matter of getting adjusted to NHL speed/physicality.

Sloan works hard but he's very sketchy with his decision-making and vision. He can do all the right things on a play and then end up giving the puck away.

Posted by: tmac2yao | November 9, 2010 9:03 PM | Report abuse

If our guy would have made that play I would have wanted that goal!

ALZNER IS PLAYING TERRIBLY!!!

Posted by: wtf_e_fehr | November 9, 2010 9:04 PM | Report abuse

That was the worst that I have ever seen Alzner look. He gave way too much space and then, when he tried to recover, he lacked the strength to impede the Ranger going to the net.

Sloan has looked bad. Flash shouldn't get a jersey against physical teams. Varlamov better get back soon because Neuvy is totally out of gas.

Posted by: zmega | November 9, 2010 9:05 PM | Report abuse

Great shift by Sloan and Erskine there.

Posted by: tmac2yao | November 9, 2010 9:09 PM | Report abuse

lang would make a better #8d/#14f than sloan

Posted by: Capt_Kirk_in_AZ | November 9, 2010 9:09 PM | Report abuse

Great backcheck by Ovechkin there... I'd love to see that more often.

I've said it before but he could be a very good two-way player if he wanted to be... if he was encouraged/demanded to be.

Posted by: tmac2yao | November 9, 2010 9:10 PM | Report abuse

lang = laing - as in quintin

Posted by: Capt_Kirk_in_AZ | November 9, 2010 9:11 PM | Report abuse

Some awful isolated mistakes tonight but the effort and compete level has definitely been there.

We donated goals but have done a lot of good things aside from that.

Posted by: tmac2yao | November 9, 2010 9:19 PM | Report abuse

Good effort so far by the team and no one has backed off on any of the after whistle stuff by the Rags.

Posted by: MReilly9 | November 9, 2010 9:22 PM | Report abuse

Flush needs to be locked in the weight room, and while he's at it, get locked away in "heart and ball-growing" school. He's unusually weak muscle-wise for an NHL regular. Green going toe to toe with Dubinsky? Nice... There is some passion going on in this game. A "playoff" type of game if you will. Not sure how I feel about it yet. A period to go. We'll see. GO CAPS!!!

Posted by: sca187 | November 9, 2010 9:30 PM | Report abuse

Sloan looks better than Alzner - I can't believe I'm saying that.
If King is only worth 4 minutes a night to fight then he is taking up valuable space on the bench.

Lets Go Caps

backstrom's hurt i think.

Posted by: natresgroup | November 9, 2010 9:47 PM | Report abuse

Sloan with yet another turnover. He absolutely needs to be able to make sharper passes to stick at this level. He's a hard worker and a good skater but that's not enough.

Great work by Alzner down low there.

Posted by: MReilly9 | November 9, 2010 10:00 PM | Report abuse

That 1 play shows why Schultz is lame. Puck is dumped in from Ranger side of center ice and Schultz goes less than full out and is beat to wash out icing.

Posted by: wgoodm01 | November 9, 2010 10:05 PM | Report abuse

Nice win by the Caps tonight, they played in a very business like manner with a lot of good effort at both ends of the rink.

Posted by: MReilly9 | November 9, 2010 10:13 PM | Report abuse

A+ for effort/compete level tonight.

Some silly, unforced mistakes but the team brought their hard hats tonight. Great to see. Let's make this more of a regular thing.

Posted by: tmac2yao | November 9, 2010 10:13 PM | Report abuse

that 1 play shows why schultz is not lame. calm as can be, in front of the net, he lifts the puck and clears the zone - forces all six rangers to retreat

Posted by: Capt_Kirk_in_AZ | November 9, 2010 10:14 PM | Report abuse

Ovechkin's been doing some great creating/passing in recent games and he "appears" to be more conscious defensively but I'm hesitant to believe it until it becomes a consistent thing.

Posted by: tmac2yao | November 9, 2010 10:19 PM | Report abuse

Katie should ask the goatlender if he gave one of this animals to Knuble for the sacrifice.

Posted by: MReilly9 | November 9, 2010 10:21 PM | Report abuse

The two guys who needed to play well played well tonight. Laich and Knuble. You knew it was only a matter of time for them both. I guess the "upper body injury" for Laich allowed him to refocus. And what a play by Bradley to get that puck to Hendricks.

POSTGAME THOUGHTS:
Lucky bounces, unfortunate bounces, solid goals and solid defense in that third period and Neuvy clamping down - a BIG win on the road for this squad.

Congrats Hendricks: Great setup by Brads on the game winner. That's the way to grind and make things happen.

Neuvy - you did good. Where did that third goal go? Wow that was a blassttt - come out and cut down the angle on that.

Defense - great team defense and way to clamp down and hang on.

This team knocked off Boston, Philly, and the Rangers - three very good teams in the past three games. Time to keep this thing rolling. A much improved and solid Lightning team comes calling Thursday. Should be a great game.

It's been a two point night. ICE BREAKERS GOAL SHAKERS

Posted by: Jonathan6 | November 9, 2010 10:34 PM | Report abuse

I wish we could play in this division.
We would be much more play off ready. The Rangers came to play. Good TREAM DEFENSE in the third period. Go Caps.

Didn't know Erskine could do that !!!!!!!!!!

Posted by: Hunterforcoach | November 9, 2010 10:53 PM | Report abuse

I did not follow the thread because I was watching via delayed DVR. Maybe someone mentioned this. But, otherwise, I want to be the first to let Alzner and Sloan off the hook for those goals. Pucks were bouncing more than JLo at the Oscars. BAD ICE. No, terrible.

Now, another subject.

One person here, as early as July, 2009, predicted for backie 11 yrs/$6.5M per and he got 10 yrs/$6.7M per. Licky guess. That same person predicted Flash would go from .7 to 2.7 and he got 2.6. Even a blind squirrel. Further that person said Fehr and Schultz would be 1-2 yrs 2.25/3 yrs 2.5/4 yrs 2.75/5 yrs 3.0. You know the numbers. Hey, more lucky guesses.

So explain how this same person here also invented the goat slaughtering (for the Dark Siders) about two weeks before Knuble said he would do it and then scored. Explain that. I know, your jaw down at your belt-buckle, you can't. No one can. It is one of those riddles of the universe.

Of course, that same person sold Dell stock last week (it's flat) to buy Kraft that is down 5%. Also, he bought Exxon-Mobil (up 8%) but sold AMCC (up 15%) to do that.

If only I could get my mouth and money in unison. That's $3K lost in those deals.

I have to say this for the Caps - they are playing consistent hockey. They are consistently just better than the other team to win every game. And that, Dark Siders, Fence Sitters and Kool Aiders alike, is a good thing.

BTW, when I get another stock pick, I'll let you know, so you can short it.

As it was written (with the goat), so it became.

NY, NY (AP):

KNUBLE SCORES, GOATS OUTRAGED

In an unusual turn of events, today, NHL veteran Mike Knuble, of the the Washington Capitals, slaughtered a goat in front of the Roosevelt Hotel, 42nd Street and 5th Avenue, in downtown Manhatten, prior to the Capitals tilt with the hometown New York Rangers.

"I've been drinking the Kool Aid for weeks," Knuble said, "but it just wasn't working. I had all kinds of chances but couldn't buy a goal. So I went to Bouds (coach Bruce Boudreau) to see if he had anything to suggest. He just shrugged his shoulders, said 'wtf,' and said I should try the goat's blood instead."

And so began an odyssey that took Knuble to a farm in Connecticut.

"I took Varly (goat tender Semyon Varlamov) with me, him being in the business," Knuble said, "and he was able to get me one cheap."

Without detail, the act was consummated. Knuble refused to confirm whether or not a contingent of Capitals Dark Sider fans, let by joek443, participated in the ceremony.

"Hey, you know, a hockey player's gotta do what a hockey player's gotta do."

Meanwhile, across America, goats were outraged.

"That's rrrrrrrrrreally terrrrrrrrible," said a goat, who would only go by the name of Billy. "None of us arrrre safe now."

In a related story, goat futures were up in overnight trading on the NYSE.

Baaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaa.

Posted by: tominsocal1 | November 9, 2010 11:19 PM | Report abuse

I'm beginning to believe, at this instance, 8:47 pm PST 11/9/10, that the Caps might just win the Cup this year.

Some of you might raise the question:

"So, tominsocal1, have you been drinking?"

Duh.

Anyway, with every great epoch in time, there's always a seminal moment (no, not a Seminal moment) that defines the event.

With the Detroit Red Wings, it was with an octopus being flung onto the ice; and with the Florida Panthers, it was Scott Melanby one-timing a rat across the locker room floor.

And, with the 2010-11 Washington Capitals, it will be Mike Knuble slicing the throat of an unsuspecting young goat.

A team. A quest. An animal.

We shall see. Better men than I make the call on these things, but I can just see this goat taking on a life (or a death) of it's own.

Bottom line: If I were a goat, I'd get the he!! outta Dodge.

Caps 5, Rangers 3.

By God, but the wine tastes good tonight.

@tominsocal1

Gee, thought "Baaaaa" was the sheep's sound and "Maaaaa" the sound of the goats.

Is goat sacrificing an Eastern European thing? Well, Knubs is the son of Latvian immigrants.

what's amusing that none of you guys seemed to mention.

Wouldn't Varlemov be pissed at Knuble for killing one of his goats and causing him to have one less to lend out?

Posted by: spotter | November 10, 2010 12:20 AM | Report abuse

j762: Did you watch the Versus telecast with Joe B and Eddie Olcyck?

Joe B mentioned Knuble's line about slaughtering a goat.

It's mainstream, now, and farmers everywhere are hiding their goats if there's a hockey team in town.

CapsFan75: Back in Latvia, right now, at this instant, Knuble's relatives are having goat chops for lunch with 2008 Kendall Jackson California Sauvignon Blanc.
