Tonight's lineup: Caps at Rangers

By Katie Carrera

Andrew Gordon will make his 2010-11 NHL debut tonight at Madison Square Garden and it appears that D.J. King has been placed on injured reserve to make room for Gordon on the 23-man roster. King wouldn't be eligible to return to the lineup until next Saturday against the Boston Bruins.

Based on warm ups there are quite a few changes to the particular combinations among the forwards and it looks like John Carlson will skate with Tom Poti while Scott Hannan has joined Karl Alzner on a pairing. But Coach Bruce Boudreau said he'd make the final call on scratches after warm ups, so we'll see.

Here's what the lineup should look like:

Forwards
Ovechkin-Backstrom-Knuble
Hendricks-Perreault-Semin
Chimera-B.Gordon-A.Gordon
Laich-Johansson-Fehr

Defense
Poti-Carlson
Alzner-Hannan
Erskine-Fahey

Goal
Varlamov
Nevurith

Scratches: Mike Green, David Steckel and Matt Bradley.

Injured reserve: Jeff Schultz, Tyler Sloan and D.J. King.

well done BB. this looks like the dumbest set of lines i've ever scene, but I hope he proves me wrong.....DJK on IR?

Glad Semin is in the line up. Go CAPS!!!

Posted by: instinct227 | December 12, 2010 6:46 PM | Report abuse

no dj king huh..he's not really hurt.

now why did we get him again? it doesn't matter if Boogaard dresses or doesn't dress. They still supplement an ornery physical lineup with players like Prust and Boyle.

I know what I'd like to see. I'd like to see a list of teams that the Caps intend to dress King for. And a list of players they expect him to fight. Because that's apparently the extent of his contributions here.

That 4th line looks very feeble. For a 4th line that is. There's not a single 4th liner on that line. Shouldve just called up Pinner and Beagle. At least they run around and finish some checks.

Very happy to see A Gordon getting his shot. I thought for sure he was lost via waivers at the end of pre-season. Go Andrew!!!

Posted by: thomas20 | December 12, 2010 6:52 PM | Report abuse

@thomas20

I think we can do call ups as injury replacements, provided the stint is 9 games or less, without being subject to the waiver thing.

They better freaking win tonite

Posted by: Dizruption | December 12, 2010 7:02 PM | Report abuse

yikes, no comment....

Posted by: vermontcaps | December 12, 2010 7:02 PM | Report abuse

well if they don't, that puts Bruce maybe one step closer to the unemployment line!

cstanton -- always looking for the silver lining.

Posted by: cstanton1 | December 12, 2010 7:04 PM | Report abuse

The question is -- what is wrong with DJ King? I thought the Players Association would get involved if he's been put on IR without a legitimate injury.

Glad Green's not on IR but if misses another game, I'm sure they'll put him on IR retroactive to last Thursday.

Hendricks is being rewarded for last night's effort.

Poti is such a POS
he was afraid of getting hit so he tried to dump off the puck.

glad we get to see him around here for another coupla yrs

Posted by: cstanton1 | December 12, 2010 7:12 PM | Report abuse

that entire sequence in our zone started because of tom Poti.

And at the other end of the ice Boyd Gordon skates past a check.

ahh..no surprises here so far.

Posted by: cstanton1 | December 12, 2010 7:14 PM | Report abuse

Once upon a time, I considered Laich/Johansson/Fehr to be a true legitimate 2nd line. How far they have fallen?

But I'm sure Brooksie will get his minutes in somehow.

AG with a bit of body contact in the off zone

maybe the young kids will show the older guys how to get it done down low

Fehr working hard against Staal.

at least he's not taking his demotion lightly

Posted by: cstanton1 | December 12, 2010 7:22 PM | Report abuse

I don't know if BB had to say it or even did - but
Fehr and Laich surely understand what they are supposed to do

Posted by: ebolean1 | December 12, 2010 7:24 PM | Report abuse

the Caps look much smaller on the ice compared to the Rangers. I don't know why that is. I thought we're the biggest team in hockey?

i guess with Steckel out that makes a difference.

Posted by: cstanton1 | December 12, 2010 7:25 PM | Report abuse

Knuble just did something I haven't seen any caps player do for a long time - that is he finished a check while we were on the PP. And kept the puck in the zone because of it.

Posted by: cstanton1 | December 12, 2010 7:26 PM | Report abuse

ovechkin's definitely brought his hardhat tonight. Good aggressive PP effort so far. They're digging out pucks along the boards.

Posted by: cstanton1 | December 12, 2010 7:28 PM | Report abuse

good forecheck by the Rags. The second a Caps player touches the puck he's getting pressure put on him.

Posted by: cstanton1 | December 12, 2010 7:29 PM | Report abuse

arrggghh chimer

Posted by: ebolean1 | December 12, 2010 7:31 PM | Report abuse

ugh, both Chimera and Laich pass up chances to hit someone. Useless!

Posted by: cstanton1 | December 12, 2010 7:32 PM | Report abuse

Hendricks line buzzin around! 3 good chances there to score

Posted by: cstanton1 | December 12, 2010 7:34 PM | Report abuse

wow - carlson - just don't get caught in there

Posted by: ebolean1 | December 12, 2010 7:34 PM | Report abuse

BTW - does anyone know where is tonight's Open Thread??

Posted by: instinct227 | December 12, 2010 7:35 PM | Report abuse

they oughta just dress chimera for home games against non-physical opponents. Then he can run around and act like a tough guy.

Posted by: cstanton1 | December 12, 2010 7:35 PM | Report abuse

Annnnddd. We suck again

Posted by: Dizruption | December 12, 2010 7:37 PM | Report abuse

lol, was that a Poti turnover there that led to the goal?

W0W!

Posted by: beforeitstoolate | December 12, 2010 7:38 PM | Report abuse

Backstrom gets away with a blatant hook in the neutral zone.

Posted by: cstanton1 | December 12, 2010 7:39 PM | Report abuse

Thoughts on the 1st period......it sucked

Posted by: Dizruption | December 12, 2010 7:41 PM | Report abuse

I don't know if any dman in the league is playing worse than Poti right now. He doesn't go into the corners. He stays close to the net and swings his stick at the puck.

Its beyond ludicrous that we locked him up to an extension. Only the caps would see value in a Poti at his age and level of play. Usually when you're this weak defensively it means you're putting up serious #s on the other end.

Posted by: cstanton1 | December 12, 2010 7:41 PM | Report abuse

alzner loses another battle which resulted in a goal...shocker

Posted by: _stevo | December 12, 2010 7:41 PM | Report abuse

allright - who was that? highlight of the evening

Posted by: ebolean1 | December 12, 2010 7:44 PM | Report abuse

positives in that period -- our defense got to see some forechecking pressure and for the most part handled it well. Except for you know who.

Also thought Ovy showed real nice jump and aggressiveness and both Fehr and Knuble worked hard.

Negatives - besides TP and his horrid play on almost every shift, our 'checkers' like Chimera and Gordon did everything they could to avoid contact. No character posers, the both of em.

Semin was a nonfactor. But he did avoid getting plastered on a hit by i think Avery or Callahan. I don't know if he felt the hit or actually saw it. Its like he sensed he was about to get creamed in open ice and pulled up short.

And AGordon looks a little slower than i was hoping to see. He got involved in some puck battles down low but I was hoping to see a good burst of speed from him and I never saw it.

Posted by: cstanton1 | December 12, 2010 7:47 PM | Report abuse

Please fire Boudreau. This team is crashing and burning. Chimera couldn't score on an empty net.

I'm so looking forward to watching this embarrassment again on 24/7. Somebody stop the pain!!!

Posted by: CAPSHOCKEY2 | December 12, 2010 7:54 PM | Report abuse

both teams played ok in that 1st. Nothing to write home about. But after we gave up that goal we had a real sloppy shift. Usually Bruce will put out the Bradley line or something just to get a good shift after a goal. With Brads out, his options are limited. At some point pretty soon after the goal Perrault's line came out and both he and I think Semin were just standing around watching the puck. It finally made it out of the zone and Hendricks got a chance at the other end.

Posted by: cstanton1 | December 12, 2010 7:55 PM | Report abuse

cstanton1:
AGordon is not fast. But he's strong and tenacious. He doesn't get knocked off the puck very often.

Posted by: tess2201 | December 12, 2010 7:58 PM | Report abuse

lookin at the goal replay, both Gordon and Poti were kinda flailing around. Poti's not as much at fault there as he was earlier when he got flustered on a Rags forecheck and he coughs up the puck on a blind clear that he only got a piece of the puck on. The Rags got good momentum on that shift because they were then able to pin us in and finish some checks. Its little plays like that which Poti will make that drives me nuts. That's exactly the kind of turnovers he repeatedly made v the Pens in the playoff series. Just bad puck decisions.

Posted by: cstanton1 | December 12, 2010 7:58 PM | Report abuse

ugh

Posted by: ebolean1 | December 12, 2010 7:59 PM | Report abuse

you can trace goal #2 to a nice hit by the Rags dman in the neutral zone that turned the play around. Very nice step up by the D on that.

I'm going to tell you who to blame on that 4th goal. Matty Perrault. He had time to skate thru the middle and engage Dubinsky, instead he backed off along with our D and allowed that shot (that shouldve been stopped) to be taken.

I'd agree. If the Caps don't win by the time the Winter Classic rolls along, then it's time to fire Boudreau. Chances are, they will win before then.

Granted, I'm not feeling very positive at the moment.

the Capitals jumped to a 3–0 record but went on to lose 15 of the next 18 games (3–14–1), which lead to Hanlon's dismissal. McPhee stated that Hanlon had lost control of the team, so he elected to replace Hanlon with Bruce Boudreau.Source Wikipedia

So looks like 6 games in a row is not enough for McPhee to fire BB.

This team has its critics here, but I dare say no one predicted such a total collapse. The Green injury is part of it IMO, but there is a lot more to it than that. I'm not sure how much of the blame goes to the coach, but regardless this is reaching the point where you fire the coach because you can't fire all the players.

Let's talk reality: this is no longer a slump but an absolute tailspin. Frankly, now, a don't gave a dam about HBO's 24/7 special, the Winter Classic, TV commercials, or anything else. Something needs to CHANGE and it has to mean something. You can't fire a team but you can fire the coach. I hate to say it, as one of the biggest Kool-aid drinkers on this blog, but we are clearly in need of a leader or we are doomed (owner, GM, captain, coach). Who is going to step up?

I am not a bandwagon fan and I love our team but I am currently horrified and sick to my stomach.

Been calling for the canning of BB for a while now. December is the month to boot a bad coach before the season is a wash. BB has been fun, but not a good enough coach for a legit run at the Cup -- and maybe even not the playoffs at this rate. Odds BB gone before Xmas 5:1, by New Year's 2:1, by mid-January 1:1.

P.S. did Ovi do anything in the off season other than jet set around the world and get in magazines. maybe some skating and puck handling drills...Never saw him miss so many shots, stub toes,etc... Less glamour more victories, team will follow.

Brutal. Biggest collection of "talented" softies and pansies I've ever seen.

I'm not going to knock OV for getting into a fight, at least he is trying to make something happen in this game, but his team needs goals from him not fights. A fight is not going to spark a team full of heartless softies.

He's on pace for what, 30 goals this season? On pace for a massive decline in points, shots, hits, seemingly everything from previous seasons?

I'm sure Ted is going to go through his usual checklist of excuses to make things look OK:

Injuries: check
Sickness: check
Travel: check
Inexperience: check
Time to gel: check
Confidence: check

As if other teams in the NHL don't have those "problems".

Everything will be OK. The Caps will just flip the switch come playoff time. Reg season means nothing right?

It's disappointing to see a collection of NHL players play like this when they have such high expectations to begin with, personally and as a team.

The more I read about Dineen the more I think he would fit in and be able to do better than BB. Hunter is one of my favorite Caps of all time and he is a great coach at a lower level than Dineen. Of course the Dineen idea came from somebody else on this board but I am sold on him. First Dineen was a world class, tough hockey player and has actually been successful in the NHL. He is also very successful in The AHL. Some old retread other than Bowman would probably not work.

Nobody expected the Avs to do much last season but they made the playoffs and almost beat the Sharks. And they're currently tied with Vancouver for the division lead.

I don't know how much influence Konowalchuk has had with that team as an asst. coach but he was always one of those players who you could see working behind the bench someday.

When will the braintrust of this team realize that the team they assembled needs more guts and grit. The top players on this team are not, I repeat not committed to winning the cup. The Greatest Player in the solar system "From HBO" is being muted by game films that show how to play the Great8. The second most skilled player takes ridiculous penalties like Saturday Night's Avs debacle. Completely selfish. The coach does not call a time out in high pressure moments on two occasions against Carolina with six seconds to play and recently against Toronto after being up by 3 goals at the beginning of the third period.
Teams like Philadelphia and Pittsburgh got stronger in the offseason while we got weaker. Ted wants to fill the seats and he is doing that, but he is way short of winning a Stanley Cup with this collection of underachievers. Green looks lost out there and Backstrom is having a subpar year so far. Remember, this team lost in the first round.

Solution. Lay down the gauntlet and hire Mike Keenan and get these high priced players working again.

i have no love nor like for mr laich.

he's turned into a non-impact player.

Its one thing for guys like Semin, or Majo, or MP not to show up in any of the physical battles. And even Semin did throw a hit on Stepan in open ice.

but Brooks Laich has the size to be accountable in a matchup like this. For him to not finish a single check, to not respond to what was going on on the ice, i have no respect for that loser.

Even Brian Fahey showed me a lil something tonight. Brooksie should be traded. He's a tradeable asset who unfortunately has lost his mettle. i blame the DC media for this. They turned him into some kind of stupid icon for the gullible fans to salivate over.

Agreed. Firing the coach masks the problem.

Some of these players should never see the ice as Capitals again. Semin, Fehr - I am looking at you.

Unfortuantely, we gave Poti an extension, so we are stuck with his immovable contract. Way to go McPhee!

fehr battled tonight, he shouldn't be getting raked over the coals for this performance. At least not for his effort.

the worst players were Poti, Semin, bGordo, and Laich. I thought Knuble battled real hard as did Ovy and Hendricks as usual. Also thought Alzner stepped outside his comfort zone and got his nose dirty. I would've liked to see Erskine do that more tonight.

I also would rather see Perrault back in Hershey. He doesn't belong up here. He's like a feather out there. I didn't see much from AGordo either but I'm willing to give him some more chances.

and i know chimmy will sleep better tonight knowing that he didn't give Prust a chance to lay him out at the end. I think he thought about it, then saw who he was messin with, then retreated and waited for the players to rush in. Smart move #25! you can live to be a puss another day.

If they keep playing like this, they won't win another game. The players look like they don't know what to do. This is what happens when a team that was built for offense attempts to play strong defense. Hannan is also a huge loser. The second goal was his fault and then he commits a penalty 10 seconds later.

Ferh played a tougher game tonight than Laich. This is what happens when there's no accountability from Ted, GM or BB. He's allowed to play soft because no one in this organization forces him or anyone else to play tough, inspired hockey.

Guys like Hendricks, and now Ovechkin, have to take matters into their own hands. Is it really surprising that Henricks fought twice, and Ovie fought, that no one else on this team followed their lead?

Not saying things will get worse but it's far from given that this is rock bottom.

As bad as this game was, wouldn't missing the playoffs be far worse?

Ted giving McPhee a lifetime contract?

2008---Tremendous run to the playoffs, first round exit totally acceptable.

2009---thanks to federov we survived round one, and we were NOT better than the Pens that year....another step in the right direction.

2010---Amazing season....Playoff Failure.

RIGHT NOW-----Everyone in the organization is crumbling with the adversity of last year's playoff failure.

WHAT WE NEED---We need a Coach right now that can change the environment and LEAD these players by telling them what is expected of them to play winning hockey. BB doesnt know what it takes.

I know firing the coach does NOT solve the GMGM problem.....but it is a step we have to take.

There definitely IS enough talent here, where if everyone is on the same page, and believing....we can atleast get hot in the spring and who knows.

Without a coaching change....there is no hope!!!

---------------

umm...when a team looks like this, it is EXACTLY a coaching and GM issue.

This doesn't just occur in a vacuum. Players aren't stupid, they can see the improvements and assistance that other GMs offer their teams. And they know the gap is getting wider each yr between them and the other teams like Pit, Phi, and now a few other teams this year who have gotten better.

Sadly, this yr will not be the yr that McPhee gets fired. It may happen in the offseason. If Bruce gets canned, it will be little solace. Because McPhee won't bring in the kind of coach that this team needs. And that coach will still be hampered by bad players like Poti, etc. We're stuck with certain guys.

its a moot point, McPhee doesn't have the guts nor the vision to make the right coaching change. He's secretly hoping that all is well and once we get some injured guys back this team will find its mojo again. At least for the reg season.

and Laich = gutless

this is justice in its own way. When a coach and GM (and then the owner) break their arms patting themselves on the back over what a phenomenal job they've done bringing this team to this upper echelon, and they've done it their own way, they've managed the cap so well, they've always gotten the players they've apparently targeted, they always draft and sign the guys they want, everything is by design and nothing is accidental or a miscalculation (even when it is). They wanted to reinvent the wheel and prove that a team of highly skilled players could outvamp other teams with their creativity. They paid lip svc to grit and defense and snubbed their noses at longstanding hockey conventions..

its that smugness and arrogance that make this fate so deserving. Now they're scrambling and will prolly go into damage control mode.

Again, they deserve it. The fans do not. Well most of us anyway :)

I'd agree with you about Fehr if not for him being so nonexistent for weeks now and I'm not at all talking about him not putting up points. He's just been a non-factor in most every sense in all too many games.

You can't show up in 1 game and get props for it after barely showing up for weeks. I did notice a better compete level from him tonight but it's just a start.

Hendricks and maybe Knuble are about the only 2 that can I think of that have delivered what was expected of them somewhat consistently over the past couple of weeks. I understand that Knuble as a top line guy needs to be putting up points but he's doing a lot of little things well that don't always show up on the scoresheet, from PKing to being in good position defensively to working hard on the forecheck and backcheck. And I know he blew it on the PK the other day but nobody's perfect. Compared to the rest of the guys, he's been far more useful in my mind.

agree with capscoach about the D giving up the middle of the ice. The forwards on this team also don't cover that area as you saw on Duby's goal.

In the 3rd, our D made a big effort to seal that zone up. They stepped up in the neutral zone a lot more and they stayed with the forwards instead of giving way and peeling off.

it proves they can do it. It also proves that they won't do it unless they're being totaly embarrassed.

I'm glad this team's sloppy ways have caught upto em. You can only thumb your nose at basic hockey principles for so long before it all comes crashing down.

I bet the NHL wished it had scheduled a Flyers v Pens game on Jan 1st instead of us. I wish they had. Then it may actually be worth watching.

Boudreau needs to be fired. He cant light a fire under the guys like he did 3 years ago. It may not be completely his fault, but the guys need to play inspired hockey, and IMO firing BB is the only way that will happen. He just can not make adjustments which is th reason why we cant win in the playoffs. The playoffs is when teams completely zone in on you and adjust their systems to shutdown their oppenent, and BB not being able to change the gameplan has been the cause of playoff failure. I know he has lead this team up from the ashes but he isnt the guy that is going to get us to the cup, and that is what we need.

on another note, the reason some of us keep bringing up the Pens isn't to irritate the daylights out of Caps fans who hate the Pens. Its to illustrate some key philosophical differences between the two organizations.

Since Mcphee isn't smart enough to figure out what it takes to win in this league, he should go and imitate an org who does understand it. First lesson is, lets not pretend we have a real checking line on this team. Its insulting to the quality checking forwards in this league who actually do a great job.

"one game, one loss"

Hey bro, I hate to break it to you but its six losses, and 9 of the last 14.

It wasn't long ago we had the best record in hockey because we didn't face any adversity. The second this team has to fight for downright, they fold up like my laundry.

Posted by: VTDuffman | December 12, 2010 10:19 PM | Report abuse

And I hate to criticize 8 tonight (even though I do it so often) after he showed how much he cares like that but for much of this season, he's looked like a guy who's lacked focus for whatever reason.

He went a couple of weeks where he couldn't control simple passes, was making about 1 good decision for every 3 or 4 bad ones and as usual, was displaying poor positional awareness.

Ovechkin by nature plays with more intensity than most players but that shouldn't overshadow the fact that he hasn't played to the level that is expected of him for much of this season, regardless of where he ranks in points or whatever.

Of greater concern is that he doesn't seem to be making any improvement to how he thinks the game. We're tied to this guy in a big way in terms of time and money. It's crucial that he improve on his weaknesses and become more of a complete hockey player and I'm not talking just about defense. He needs to become a better decision-maker in most every facet and it almost seems like he's regressing at times. I do think that part of that is on coaching. I get the impression that Boudreau doesn't teach details and demand certain things of his players as much as some other coaches around the league do.

I will start by saying I didn't watch the game. I had it DVRed to watch when I got back from playing but saw the score and erased the tape without starting it. I have just one question. Was having Varly out the whole game a message BB was trying to send and if so was it to the goalie that he needs to step up his game or was it to the players to tell them it is the team's issue not a goaltending issue?

The reason I ask is it seems hard to believe that a coach leaves in a goalie for 7 goals when his save % is 65%. The last time off the top of my head I can remember something like this happening was the Habs coach sending a message to Roy against Detroit. That ended up being Roys last game with the team.

It's not too late to turn this thing around, they're still in 1st, they are comfortably in the postseason still. But something has to give, and you can't fire a dozen players.

BB looked like a beaten man in the presser. I really like the guy and am grateful for what he's done here, but sometimes you need a new voice. I think the team is at that point.

firing the coach is one step. Firing the GM is the eventual step. Unfortunately, if we do get a decent coach in here under the current GM, he may get fired when McPhee gets fired.

i think in parallel to this, you gotta start making some deals. That involves maybe upto 3 or 4 players total. 3 upfront, 1 on the blueline. There are some other teams out there who have high aspirations this yr who are looking to deal as well. Teams like the Sharks. Get me Doug Murray. Get me Ryane Clowe.

give em schultz, laich, and a very skilled player. I'd like to hold onto Semin for another deal but he may have to be part of that. In which case they can throw in jamie McGinn or a defensive prospect like Petrecki.

Then you gotta go get a center. And that may require giving up a young goalie. i'd be willing to give up both MaJo AND a goalie for a real solid two way 2nd line center.

and then you have to change your team philosophy. Giving up Semin and not getting back any true scorer in the trade will require this team to play more like a team. Better defense, and winning games 3-1. The key to the trades besides a Murray and Clowe is the player you get as your 2nd line center. Someone in the Dubinsky mold would be good.

the other trading partner could be Ottawa with guys like Mike Fisher and Chris Neil.

the tweaking of the bottom 6 forwards is easier and won't require too much thought. And can maybe be filled from within.

Posted by: hockeypuck1 | December 12, 2010 10:45 PM | Report abuse

I think we are missing the forest for the trees here. Whatever the team's deficiencies, in recent years they have been able to score lots of goals and win lots of games. When they lost in the playoffs, they were at least competitive.

What we are seeing is the complete, essentially sudden collapse of a powerhouse team. And their most obvious failure has been their previous strength, the offense. I can't think of a similar collapse of a strong team whose key players are all in their early primes. Imagine Tom Brady being unable to complete a pass and the Patriots looking for an extended period like they are worse than the Redskins. Or Kobe Bryant being unable to score and the Lakers collapsing. Or the Yankees collapsing and looking worse than the Nats.

Losing streaks happen, good teams play bad for a while. But the Caps' situation has gone beyond that IMO. This is a total mystery to me. It is bizarre.

Backstrom looked really off for the first several games of the season and then regained form for a good stretch. He may have been affected by that cut or whatever from blocking that shot in the preseason. Not sure.

He's had a couple of bad games recently, too, but I'd say that he's far and away been the better player than Ovechkin this season and that Ovechkin's poor play has little or nothing to do with Backstrom.

Ovechkin's poor decision-making and bad positioning have always been issues and have nothing to do with Backstrom. They're just more noticeable now when he's not scoring as much. His lack of scoring seems to be more related to him simply not being as sharp as he has been in the past. He could barely handle simple passes in some recent games.

It's convenient to blame it on Backstrom but it could simply be him not playing well independent of anything else.

To all who thought me nothing but a raving lunatic, I'm sorry to say I feel somewhat vindicated. It was good for Ovi to try to send a message, but I'm not sure if anyone heard him (Hendricks/Avery was a carry-over from their altercation; that was personal and not team related)....I was hoping Johnny E. would make us proud, but no one on the Rags looked his way. That was one intelligent take in comparing true championship teams and top calibre players. Very interesting and insightful.

Listening to BB saying he hopes OVI does not have to play like that when he got into the rough stuff. Really Brucey. I guess that did not work out for Gordie Howe or Messier who play like an OVI. Give me a break. After that press conference it convinced me that BB needs to go. Are you kidding me about playing tough emotional hockey. No wonder this guy could not cut the mustard in The NHL. He is a total wimp. He has nurtered men. Good job. If OVI does not score he should be making other people's life miserable. And on another note Semin knocking Liles on his butt I approve. BB calling Semin selfish is off the mark. It would appear no one would stand up for Semin. BTW, Semin has been the best player on the team all year BB and the least selfish.

A lot of good points made on the site tonight. McPhail couldn't build a true Cup team and just like his previous coaches - Wilson, Cassidy, Hanlon...and now BB - it shows.

This team has no team toughness. It's a few players here/there - Chimera is the biggest pansy going...our 4th liners should be bangers, but they're all finese / diggers. It's a joke.

Green - who knows what's up with that guy.

We need a new Chirproctor at Ballston Mall.

Posted by: pkme | December 12, 2010 11:01 PM | Report abuse

yeah seriously, the only good thing to come out of tonight was how Ovy played. For Bruce to minimize that contribution like its some type of sideshow just proves what a clueless idiot he really has turned into. I thought he was the one who said this isn't tiddlywinks. Well he sounds like a tiddly twink.

i expect to read Ted and McPhee's takes on this in the next coupla days fully supporting Bruce.

And then I expect him to get canned.

The insulting part of this is that the one whose job should be on the line will get to present himself as a loyal supporter of Bruce and say something like "we're all in this together"

Imagine Tom Brady being unable to complete a pass and the Patriots looking for an extended period like they are worse than the Redskins.
----------------------

If you saw what he did in the snow earlier today, that's something that will NEVER happen till he's really too old to compete.

And he's throwing the ball to a bunch of nobodies and rookies except Welker.

One think I will say about BB, he is not shy about telling it like it is when his goalies stink.

Posted by: hockeypuck1 | December 12, 2010 10:45 PM | Report abuse

I'm having a hard time thinking of another coach who treated his goalies so awful. His treatment of Kolzig was nothing short of SHAMEFUL, as was his handling of Theodore last year. Varly and Neuvy?? Well, it's hard not to see them in the same "chosen" light as some of the others, too....Varly stunk tonight, period.

Hey buddy, where are you now with the "Hunter's on drugs jokes" when I bust on BB and his sorry wimps. You had a real big mouth when I said these guys were sandbagging BB. Now Silence !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
These guys won't play for this coach because he doesn't kick their butts.

BB is Mr. McGoo.

Backi has turned into Mother Theresa.

This game with Poti wimping, Chimy wimping, Fehr wimping, shows why we exit early every year.

FIRE BB AND GMGM. ALL 3 OF GMGM'S COACHING PICKS HAVE SUCKED.!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Come on left coast, mouth off now !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

HUNTER FOR COACH!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Posted by: Hunterforcoach | December 12, 2010 11:12 PM | Report abuse

Nobody wants to admit it, but this team has still never recovered from the disaster against Montreal last spring. They will never fully get over that humiliation until they let BB go. The idea that they would just go meekly into the offseason, make no changes, and amazingly improve is a joke. They should have canned BB then and they definitely need to now. BTW, they also could have assisted getting over that embarrassment if they had opted, as I had advocated, to not raise a banner to the rafters of VC memorializing the worst collapse in the history of DC sports (winning the President's BS and still managing to get boat raced in the first round of the playoffs).

Posted by: nomarjax01 | December 12, 2010 11:25 PM | Report abuse

I don't think BB's mind games or temper tantrums work anymore. It's just like with kids, sooner or later they figure out it's all bluster, nothing bad will happen, and they stop listening. However, being a longtime Caps fan like many of you. We all know what will happen when BB is fired, he'll get hired in Edmonton or somewhere and lead them to the Cup. Meanwhile we will be Rockin' the Red with GMGM and his latest prodigy another Bruce Cassidy.

Hunter or Dineen. I am concerned about the level that Hunter has coached at. I love Hunter so do not take it the wrong way. One thing is for sure he would encourage players to take other players head off and players would crash the net or they would be benched. Dineen may have more experience at a high level. Calling some of you hockey geeks. Name six candiates to replace BB.

Pardon my language but this team is a bunch of Wussies because BB is a wussy. I can't believe he talked doodoo about OV for mixing it up, he was one of maybe 3 players tonight who actually gave a darn.

This team is soft because the coach is soft and he tells them not tobolay tough. The next few days will show us how committed Ted is to winning the cup. When was the last time a team of marshmallows won the cup? GMGM built the team of tempurpedics and BB coached them. At least one or both need to be gone by week's end.

This is pathetic. The puck's in your zone, Teddy -- show us youre committed to winning.

@kcbrichmond

We've never had a coach move on to become a cUp winning coach. Get real. This GM certainly couldn't spot cUp talent if it cross checked him in the head like Semin did. He brought us a coach who was routinely dropped at the airport by a dancer from "GoodGuys", AND was too stupid to think player wives in the parking wouldn't notice. (Butch is an equipment manager in Moosejaw for the Ice Hens)
How Ted believes in this guy is strange.

Hey BB,
That Semin cross check is just old fashioned hockey.

You should be cross checking 2/3 of the boys in your locker room with a stick to the head.

BB, have fun in Moosejaw with Butch. Mean statement. No ! BB needed to make major changes after the Habs disaster. Good bye!

@icehammer97

I don't know if you had heard the news but the reason that Boudreau left Varly in for the entire debacle is that Neuvirth is now affected by the flu that affected his teammates and would only have come into the game in an absolute emergency.

@pkme

I've already responded to this thread. The score, the losing streak, and the way the Caps have been losing speak for themselves.

Hard to add anything as an outsider especially with all the things I've pointed out in the past on the Caps and the individuals.

I'm sure the Caps will get their act together eventually but the problems that they have are persistent - meaning this is not just a slump they're going through, IMO.

I pointed out what a joke "McPhee for GM of the year" was, and guys on this site fried my ass for weeks.

Look at the lot of wimps GMGM has brought to this team. We suck !!!

I really can't watch more of Stecks, Poti, Fehr, Chimy, Backi, Shultz, etc and their brand of "Momma's boy" hockey.
Even Laich is starting to look like a wimp.

My one coach suggestion. Jules Winnfield. He would make this team tough. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ek9m9n8uiw0.

Posted by: icehammer97 | December 13, 2010 12:06 AM | Report abuse

229 Shots on goal during the six game losing streak 8 goals scored.

-We out shot every team during the losing streak.

-Opposing goalies have a .965% against us during this losing streak.

- we need an average of almost 30 shots for every goal.

By Comparison we have allowed 23 goals on 160 shots which is .856% save percentage.

Bottom line

These numbers are not sustainable.

Also only way Boudreau gets fired if we are in the 9th place and out of playoffs which is what happened with Penguins and Flyers both teams were either 9th or 10th spot when the coaching change happened. We are 11 points ahead of 9th place spot.

why do they say "we are a hockey town" in the intro? Do they need to prove it someone.. "Just in case you were wondering we are a hockey town"... its like when you pick up a suspect "I didn't kill anyone".... a very insecure organization, and i think it has a lot to do with the recent playoff struggles and the pressure on an organization that hadn't been relevant for an extended period of time.

I've called for McPhee to be fired since 2001. It's remarkable that he's still employed given his "performance".

I could have easily done a better job, that's a guaranty, most people could have.

Posted by: pkme | December 13, 2010 12:12 AM | Report abuse

If the Caps were to fire BB, it would be best to replace him with someone who's had experience as a head coach winning in the NHL on an interim basis at least. Mactavish, Hartley, even Quinn are good candidates for this type of team because they've had experience coaching super stars and offensive minded teams.

Hiring a head coach who doesn't have enough exp like the former players some of you mentioned would be a huge risk, he would need to learn on the job, and that could waste this season entirely of not many more.

BigGameSid,

You man like how when the Pens were down a couple years back, they replaced their coach with noted experienced NHL coach Dan Byslma?

Come on, bro. Your "concern" is noted, but everyone with half a brain knows that a failed retread is the worst move the caps could make at h
This point.

Hey everyone, listen to the advise of the Pens fan, surely he has our best interests at heart!

You gotta' think long and hard about tossing a coach that took ya' to the big dance. GMGM let Wilson go too easily, and hired Butch. Butch was known to be a clubber
and a drunk. When did GMGM learn this about Butch ? The Wings knew all about Butch. Why didn't GMGM ?

I've never liked GMGM ever since I heard that Butch brought notes into a player meeting that he wrote on a cocktail napkin. Butch was also too dumb to realize that some of the players realized he was wearing yesterdays clothing. Hell, he was just gettin' in. What a joke !

A guy who makes a coaching move like this is going to build a cUp winner ??? So, count me in too as a GMGM hater since 2001.
Hunter for coach !!

Posted by: Hunterforcoach | December 13, 2010 1:08 AM | Report abuse

Ted will give him until the New Year and at the very least Jan 2, 2011 or heck he may give him until another spring meltdown.. He would not make a move with HBO/Classic and all that stuff. It would be bad PR and media strategy. Yes the losing streak is bad for us fans local but most National fans do not care how The Caps perform. The NHL would have a meltdown about such a move also. On another note have you noticed that BB and I said this last season never accepts responsibility for the team. Or that other coaches can read his players and their systems so easily. He has lost the locker room and the respect of the guys IMO.
