No Kozlov, Johnson
The Caps are on the ice for the morning skate but Viktor Kozlov and goaltender Brent Johnson are missing.
I'll try to get an update on their status after the skate. But the fact that they are not skating almost certainly rules them out for tonight's game against Los Angeles.

Bummer. Random question (putting my caps fan hat on again). If Johnny goes down for an extended period, do we bring up Varlamov and have him share time with Theo? To be fair, Theo has been pretty darn good the last month, and its kind of hard to justify demoting him to 1A given the perforance lately.
(Kings hat back on). Of course, tonight Theo's success will come crashing back to earth. Should I chant 1-2-3-4-5 to him? (Just kidding about the chant.

Question. I was thinking about switching to FIOS, but I don't see Comcast Sportsnet in their channel lineup. Does anyone have FIOS, and if so, can you get Caps games?

Lets hope the Kozlov thing is just a precaution. We have players that can fill in, and no rush to throw him back in there.

Here's what I'd like to see up front tonight, assuming Kozlov is given the night off.
OV/Fedorov/Fehr
Laich/Backstrom/Semin
Flash/Nylander/Steckel
Brash/Gordon/Bradley

Just a repeat from the previous post. Clark is having surgery today; Johnson is also going to have surgery.
Kozlov is expected to be back on Saturday.
Anything else you all want to know?

@oldtimehockey - The problem with calling Varlamov up is that he is also injured at the moment. He's skating, but he is not ready to play.
The Bears' current backup goalie is a fellow named Kris Mayotte. He's 33, and has played (and lost) one game for the Lowell Lock Monsters (now the Lowell Devils) in 2005-06.

Posted by: JSchon | February 5, 2009 10:40 AM | Report abuse
1) Looks like the Caps may need to acquire a back up goalie. The guy that makes the most sense is Martin Gerber.
a)They wouldn't have to give up anything to get him. He needs to go through re-entry waivers(which will cut his salary in 1/2)
b) He has playoff experience.
c) He's a UFA after this season.

@Baildog:
My parents have FIOS in Montgomery County, and they have CSN, both in standard and HD. The HD was added pretty recently, I believe.

Re: Kris Mayotte - He's also played at the ECHL level for the last two seasons, last year for the Fresno Falcons, and this year for the Johnstown Chiefs. Last year, he had a SV% of .900 (860/955), and this year, it's .912 so far (832/912)

Baildog, look at 76/576. Then again, you never said where you're located. But I'm a FiOS subscriber, and I did that specifically to maximize the amount of hockey that I get as compared to Comcast. (NHL HD and Center Ice HD are both unavailable on Comcast in our area but are available on FiOS. Both providers have CSN HD and Versus HD.)
Posted by: GregAnnapolis | February 5, 2009 10:44 AM | Report abuse
@ Baildog
I have FIOS and live in Anne Arundel County, MD. Comcast is included in the package, channel 576 in HD, not sure what channel is standard format. Not sure where you live, but should be included in their packages.

I rather put one of our kids (Varly or Neuvrith) in net as a back-up.
Posted by: Cerealman | February 5, 2009 10:47 AM | Report abuse
CHeese would be the backup. Varly is staying down until next season.
Posted by: Leeguru | February 5, 2009 10:49 AM | Report abuse
Baildog,
In addition to the other answers on the Fios lineup, earlier this season when there was a Wizards/Caps conflict, the Caps were bounced to Fios channel 1. Since the Zards are playing at such an incredible level, perhaps that will change, but I somehow doubt it.
In Fairfax:
1 is CSN+
76 is CSN standard
576 is CSN HD

Wish I could get FiOS. It's not available in my area right now.

Baildog, you know, I just looked at Verizon's FIOS website. While CSN is not explicitly listed on the webpage, it is in the PDF channel listing. The broadcast networks (NBC, FOX) aren't listed on the webpage either, just in the PDF. Must be a "of course you get that" thing.

Boston Globe:
The Oilers, still in the hunt for one of the final playoff seeds in the Western Conference, are in need of a winger to play on the Shawn Horcoff-Ales Hemsky line. They also could use help at the faceoff circle, where Horcoff takes most of the draws.
The Bruins would have great interest in ex-Hurricanes winger Erik Cole, the big, smooth-skating winger. He has 12 goals and 22 points in 50 games this season. Cole, 30, who is making $4 million this season, becomes an unrestricted free agent July 1. The Bruins could fit him into the salary cap because they have Marco Sturm's $3.5 million at their disposal, following the German winger's season-ending knee surgery.

IRTR,
I think oldtime was looking at a longer term view. As evidenced by him saying "If Johnny goes down for an extended period"
If Johnny has to go under the knife, he could be out months, if Varly is back skating and is only a couple of weeks away from playing I think it's obvious in those circumstances that Varly comes up, backs up Theo and plays the odd game while Neuvy goes to Hershey.
I'd like to see Neuvy get some time while we wait on Varly to get fully fit. Having both these two getting time with the big boys is great for the long term health of the club.
I hear the "they'd be better off playing than sitting on the bench" arguement but the experience of being part of the NHL, practicing with players like Feds, Ovie etc is priceless.

Balldog, one more thing. It took more than 6 months for Verizon to disconnect my services, apparently, you have to talk to different people all over the world - that is after hours of holding and transfers among their departments.
With Cox you deal with one person, and, behold, they have a walk in office where customers can go and exchange products have things fixed.
