No Surgery for Thoresen

There's some positive news to report regarding injured Flyers forward Patrick Thoresen. I'm told that his injury is not as serious as originally thought, and that it's possble he'll play tomorrow.

Great news, even as a caps fan no one wants to see someone get hurt like that!

Posted by: amg | April 12, 2008 1:21 PM | Report abuse

Glad to hear he is ok. I'd hate to see anybody get a serious injury like that.

Posted by: Charles | April 12, 2008 1:25 PM | Report abuse

Glad it's not serious. I think I've been having sympathy pains for him all morning...

Good news.

Poor guy! Hopefully he learned his lesson and doesnt try to block Greeners shots anymore.
Green was lethal last night. In addition to the 2 g's, testicular trauma I think he nailed Flyer in the face with the puck on a slap pass.

Ha ha ha... Testicles.

Get well Thor!

You really need your balls for playoffs! :)

No balls, no Stanley!

Posted by: King Huet | April 12, 2008 1:29 PM | Report abuse

From the Washington Times:

i Right wing Mike Knuble said the team knew Thoresen was hurt because "he's not the type of player who flops," and added the officials made the right call.

i Philadelphia goaltender Martin Biron said he wasn't expecting the play to be blown dead, and at least outwardly, didn't question the decision to keep playing.

i "It's happened before, where guys block shots, get hurt and usually referees wait for you to get the puck back," Biron said. "And the puck goes over to the other side, and now we're basically playing 5-on-3. It kind of gets everybody mixed up a little bit. He was able to come down and take a pretty good shot."

Good news! Now that's a hockey player!!!

Posted by: pf | April 12, 2008 1:31 PM | Report abuse

Thoresen probably got his balls massaged by Prospal overnight

Any word on Laing or Fehr for flash
he was painful and no help offensively or defensively

Posted by: wendel | April 12, 2008 1:36 PM | Report abuse

Holy moly! Still can't believe his luck! Good for him! Balls of steel I suppose!!! LOL! I am glad to hear that he is doing better.

Posted by: puddin_an_Semin | April 12, 2008 1:36 PM | Report abuse

As I predicted in a previous surgery back next game. It's amazing how far Philly will try and make a point-even sending a guy to the hospital. Pathetic.

Posted by: Harry | April 12, 2008 1:38 PM | Report abuse

Good news. Lets get back to series.

Posted by: Victor | April 12, 2008 1:39 PM | Report abuse

Just got it: he'll play tomorrow?

Got a testicle removed, missed a shift, that's a hockey player!

Well, watch it, he's gonna put a bullet proof vest between the legs tomorrow.

Posted by: King Huet | April 12, 2008 1:44 PM | Report abuse

That is good news. I emailed the Phila writer ( who wrote that CAP fans cheered when and because Thoresen got hurt, and suggested that wasn't true and that he read this blog.

Posted by: Dezlboy | April 12, 2008 1:48 PM | Report abuse

Now why would someone writing about hockey fans from Philly think fans were cheering for the injury of another player? Hmmmm....

Posted by: Leeguru | April 12, 2008 2:00 PM | Report abuse

Flyers have no balls.

Posted by: Pwnd | April 12, 2008 2:04 PM | Report abuse

good, that'll keep Downie out of lineup for tomorrow.

Hope some of the fans get some of these truck nuts and dangle them in the face of the Flyers tomorrow

Posted by: capsfannmiss | April 12, 2008 2:34 PM | Report abuse

Glad to hear Thoresen is okay. Watching the game on TV, it looked pretty bad.

Posted by: Good News | April 12, 2008 2:35 PM | Report abuse

Good news about Thoresen. Hate to see anyone go down on an injury like that.
In the meantime, Tarik; what's the change been like; first to see no one caring about this team other than the diehards; then to migrate in a very short period of time to bedlam?

Posted by: pga3 | April 12, 2008 2:36 PM | Report abuse

Briere has curative enzymes in his saliva. Thoresen will be fine. Lets just hope that Danny can keep up. There are going to be a lot of wounds to lick.

Posted by: oo7 | April 12, 2008 2:44 PM | Report abuse

The guy took a frozen block of rubber traveling at least 85 mph of his genitals. I don't think it's fair to assume it was gamesmanship on the part of the Flyers to send him to a doctor, especially given that the Philly players acknowledged it was the right call to keep the play alive.

Posted by: dmg | April 12, 2008 3:01 PM | Report abuse

Good for him. As much as I want to make light of it, I sympathize with any man who suffers like that.

Posted by: Scott | April 12, 2008 3:02 PM | Report abuse

Tarik, what's your take on the Philly columnist Phil Sheridan who said that "the Verizon Center fans...discovered ice hockey about the time Ovechkin started putting up crazy numbers". Does he even cover the sport?

Posted by: b.orr4 | April 12, 2008 3:05 PM | Report abuse

Phil has been cover the Flyers for a long time.

Posted by: Tarik | April 12, 2008 3:06 PM | Report abuse

re: b.orr4 -- are you implying that caps fan didn't discover hockey recently? i used to laugh at the idea of a caps game being sold out. while i'm glad they are now, it still wasn't all that long ago (a few weeks ago even) when it was sort of a novel thought that the building would be anywhere near the intensity it has been as of late.

Posted by: cup? | April 12, 2008 3:11 PM | Report abuse

Did anyone else notice on flyer's forth goal I think it was Hartnell was in the crease? Both feet and it totally interfered with Huet and took defenseman right into Huet as well and no call. Glad the caps came back otherwise the caps would have had a major beef.

Posted by: bb | April 12, 2008 3:24 PM | Report abuse

Oh drat. Because as a Caps fan, I was cheering to see when he was injured. Because I'm classless. The thought of an injury made me feel all warm inside.

/Still annoyed that some people were actually implying that the crowd was cheering about the injured player.

Posted by: Joe | April 12, 2008 3:28 PM | Report abuse

Glad to hear Thoresen will be fine. But it was ridiculous of Flyer's GM Holmgren to come out and say it'looks like he will lose one', in reference to his testicles. Embarrassing to all involved.

I'm surprised we weren't just told it was a 'lower body injury'....

Posted by: sj9096 | April 12, 2008 3:28 PM | Report abuse

Glad he's going to be ok. I am also glad the Flyers are not griping about the play continuing. It absolutely was the right call.

I am not impressed by the idiot sports writers in Philly. Briere is going to make people forget about OV? Are you kidding me?

Verizon Fans Cheering an injury? Please. There was a goal scored 6 seconds later.

Posted by: Sombrero Guy | April 12, 2008 3:33 PM | Report abuse

Posted by: bb | April 12, 2008 3:35 PM | Report abuse

Caps fans were cheering when he went down. They cheered louder when the goal was scored, but there was a roar of the crowd when he went down. Also, he didn't the standard cheer as he was helped off the ice because folks were cheering the goal.

Posted by: 121 K | April 12, 2008 3:38 PM | Report abuse

And here I was having such a nice day!! :-P I am so over the Ovie/Syd comparison - there simply is no comparison. I have respect for Syd's talent, but Ovie is statistically a better player. He can not only score, but he can also pass, hit ... whatever! Plus he is a joy to watch - no one seems to enjoy the game more than he does. He is also clearly a leader to his team ... all of this elevates the play of those around him. How can you beat that? So while Syd is great, Ovie is better. Granted, I understand the 'a good center is more valuable than a good winger' arguement, but I still can't imagine picking ANYONE over Ovie right now ... even Crosby.

Posted by: Boo! | April 12, 2008 3:38 PM | Report abuse

121 K:
People cheered when he went down not because he was hurt (I don't think anyone imagined it was that bad), they cheered because it was a 5-3.

Is anyone watching the Preds/Wings game? The last few minutes have been crazy!!!

Posted by: Boo! | April 12, 2008 3:41 PM | Report abuse

Is there any replay of the game on Comcast or VS in the next 24 hrs. Was at the game but would like to see it.

Posted by: billd | April 12, 2008 3:41 PM | Report abuse

Hope he gets well fast. Classy of Flyers and Holmgren not to whine about the non-call, considering its impact.

Posted by: Jim H | April 12, 2008 3:43 PM | Report abuse

Of course we have to remember that Bill Clement won 2 Stanley Cups with the Philly Flyers... not a coincidence he wrote this the day after OV incredible game winning goal against the Flyers. What a tool.

Posted by: longtimecapsfan | April 12, 2008 3:44 PM | Report abuse

That Clement article sucked. Poorly written rehashed meaningless sentiment. "Crosby's better because he's a center." Clements irrelevance fits perfectly behind the peacock.

Posted by: oo7 | April 12, 2008 3:44 PM | Report abuse

And the preds/wings game just got crazier ...

Posted by: Boo! | April 12, 2008 3:45 PM | Report abuse

Oops ... I was on delay, so the craziness may have been a bit off! :-) Regardless, it has been an interesting second period.

Posted by: Boo! | April 12, 2008 3:51 PM | Report abuse

Seriously - do you see any merit in the article? I just don't get it ... two years ago it may have been up for debate, but not now. Considering all of the hardware that Ovie will be taking home this year, I think it's a moot point.

Posted by: Boo! | April 12, 2008 3:54 PM | Report abuse

More on Thoresen:

It's good news for Patrick Thoresen. Flyers' general manager Paul Holmgren gave an update on the winger on Saturday afternoon during the team's practice at the Kettler Ice Complex. Thoresen is possible to play in Game 2 of the Eastern Conference Quarterfinals on Sunday (2:00 p.m., NBC). "The ultrasound they did last night was actually good news," said Holmgren. "They did another ultrasound this morning and everything checked out okay. He's now back at the hotel just resting up. As far as his status, it's going to come down to how he feels, but he's a possibility for the game tomorrow." ... "Obviously we're all thankful it's not more serious than it is," added Holmgren.

Posted by: Boo! | April 12, 2008 3:59 PM | Report abuse

Why is anyone the slightest bit concerned about what Bill Clement says? GMs can have Crosby if they want. We've got Ovie for 13 years.

Posted by: katzistan | April 12, 2008 4:01 PM | Report abuse

Jagr could do what Thoresen did without risk of injury.

Posted by: GMGM | April 12, 2008 4:02 PM | Report abuse

I seriously think Bill Clement is just a biased die-hard Flyers fan trying to rustle up bad blood by starting the OV-Crosby comparisons again. A quick google on him reveals "Clement is also host of a Flyers-based radio talk show on WBCB 1490 AM in Bucks County, Pennsylvania." There is absolutely no reason to compare the two right now other than to piss the Caps off.

Posted by: longtimecapsfan | April 12, 2008 4:06 PM | Report abuse

Not concerned - just don't get it; just don't get the press, in general ... Ovie deserves his props.

Posted by: Boo! | April 12, 2008 4:10 PM | Report abuse

Green and Alex was just on NBC at Ketler... Alex told them that Philly needs to key on Brash... pretty funny.

Posted by: 828 | April 12, 2008 4:11 PM | Report abuse

Flyers propaganda...they want sympathy.

Posted by: Anonymous | April 12, 2008 4:12 PM | Report abuse

Yeah, Clement's a Flyers' guy - though he did play for the Caps for a couple years. Whatever, let the talking heads spout off. Ovie's getting plenty of props, someone's gotta say something contrarian.

Whatever he writes, fact is that he and Mike Emrick were the best hockey broadcasting pair there ever was. I don't understand why NBC ditched him as their studio host this year.

Posted by: katzistan | April 12, 2008 4:15 PM | Report abuse

People write and create stories to sell newspapers - it is what it is... just like Burnside says ALEX = MVP and Melrose thinks not.
Caps are up 1-0 in the series so I could care less... If the Caps can get it to 2-0, the Flyers would have to win 4 in 5 games... Let's see them do that against the "weak" Capitals

Posted by: 828 | April 12, 2008 4:18 PM | Report abuse

Dmg- The whole episode was gamemanship. The Flyers wanted a whistle, didn't get it and paid for it. Mike Richards was over arguing with the refs about it and the Flyer bench was complaining as well. They felt they got robbed and they're playing it up. The same way Upshall looked like he could barely move his arm getting hit in the corner by Juice but after he got his boarding call he was back the next shift. The same way Briere looked like he would never walk again after Ovechkin hit him but never missed a shift. Gamesmanship is part of the game and the Flyers will play any angle to win especially when they are the inferior team-they need any break they can get. I'm sure they will get some favorable calls tomorrow. And I'm sure McCreary will be there influencing the game in his special way.

Posted by: Harry | April 12, 2008 4:20 PM | Report abuse

Good analysis Harry. I completely agree.

Posted by: longtimecaps | April 12, 2008 4:25 PM | Report abuse

I hope the guy returns to good health with no adverse issues.

However, if Rick Tabaracci can take a puck to the throat as a goalie and play continues and a goal is scored, the flyers have nothing to complain about.

Posted by: falls | April 12, 2008 4:32 PM | Report abuse

Per this quote, "The ultrasound...was...good news," said Holmgren. "... another ultrasound this morning and everything checked out okay."

Amazing how itty-bitty that ultrasound equipment is today! ;-)

Did you guys watch the coach daily dialog?
Bruce, in the middle of the interview, commenting on girlie screams in the background:

Posted by: mauree | April 12, 2008 4:36 PM | Report abuse

We all know Clement is Philly biased from his Clark-era days on Broad Street but as a broadcast journalist, one would think he would emphasize a report of that nature as a pure editorial. He didn't. Your thoughts?

I guess the season he spent as a Capital really meant nothing. Anyway, if he keeps it up he'll be back to doing this.

I live in Hershey and I get stuck with Philadelphia Comcast. Phil Sheridan is like all the other Philly writers, they only watch their team, they have no clue about any of the other teams, like the Caps. Now go out and kick some more Flyer ass.

@ Pete Peeters,, I didn't pass on how you felt about Phil. He did reply to me, saying that he knows it was a minority of fans who cheered when Thoresen went down, but never the less, some did cheer.

I really really really do NOT think the cheering was because Theresen went down. If that was the case, the crowd would have been cheering (or jeering?) when he was helped off the ice, and that wasn't the case.

Lest anyone thinks Bill Clement has an objective opinion...he has a big Flyers logo tattooed on his chest. He played for expansion-era Washington after winning two Cups with Philly, and hated his time in DC. That Tom Selleck wannabe jerk is completely biased against the Caps, and I'd bet money that he'd like nothing more than to share a hot shower with Sidney Crosby.

Posted by: jak | April 12, 2008 9:13 PM | Report abuse

Been out all day and just catching up. A few thoughts on the whole Thor situation and the Philly fans:

1) I am glad he is alright
2) We have seen players go down faking to stop play all the time. The refs did the right thing. As many people have said, we scored within 6 seconds.
3) Even Biron said he didn't expect play to be stopped. They would have stopped it with Flyer puck control. In the end, Biron could have/maybe should have stopped the shot as it was a straight slap shot from the point. The fans and journalists in Philly should be more worried that we exposed a big weakness in their goalie.
4) I feel that it is not our responsibility to make opposing teams fans comfortable at our building. I go to many arenas as a visiting fan and I never get treated well. We do not need to be physical, but an accidental beer spill is not out of the question. This is our place. No one should want to come into our building. Look at how the earlier blogs were filled with people not comfortable with going to Philly. That is how all other team's fans should feel here.

Let's Go Caps!!!

Not to be the dramatic kolzig supporter, because I'm definitely not (I was always partial to jim carey), but what about getting him in net for game 2. There is no better time, and its not as if Huet was sharp in game one. It would be a huge emotional boost, not to say the team needs it, and maybe he has one stellar appearance saved up.

Only time I see Olie having a chance would be if we get to the back to back games for #6 and #7.

I was watching Greenie's interview, after Caps practice today, and at one point Ovechkin started interviewing him. Ok here it is (Tarik starts it off):

Tarik: Are you intimidated, at all, by being interviewed by Ovechkin

Green: Ovechkin? No

Ovechkin: How you feel when I jump on you?

Green: Huh?

Ovechkin: How you feel when I jump on you when you score second goal?

Green: Well I get a little nervous when you chase me but *pause and smile* it's good as long as we..

(Ovechkin interrupts him)

Ovechkin: That was pretty sick right?

Green: Yeah

And all that time, the interviewers around the two, and well as both of them were laughing and smiling.

Hello Moderators read your own quote "We encourage users to analyze, comment on and even challenge's articles, blogs, reviews and multimedia features".
Aparently if somone disagree with your poor reporting skills you don't let it be seen or heard.

Posted by: Flyers | April 13, 2008 2:49 AM | Report abuse

It is absolutely priceless that a philly backer (@Flyers) comments on poor reporting skills and uses bad grammar in the process! ...if someone disagree(S)....

If you had ever spent a half an hour in Philadelphia you would understand. haha.

Posted by: Jay | April 13, 2008 8:25 AM | Report abuse

Poor reporting skills? Tarik does a heck of a job. If you want to talk about poor reporting skills, look no further than the idiot Philly reporters writing that Caps fans were cheering an injury, when they were cheering an opportunity and a goal.

The phone booth should change its name to "the Red Sea" for Caps home playoff games; it was quite a sight to see on Friday night.

I can't wait to go back there in just a couple of hours.

Gosh I love this town.

Things are going well, today will be a tough game and we can bet the Flyers will be gunning for us. Glad Thor is okay, waiting for the JSchon delivery!!
Go Caps Go!

Posted by: Greenie | April 13, 2008 9:46 AM | Report abuse

On this glorious Sunday, we give thanks to blessings bestowed upon us last Friday night, as we arose from a 2 goal deficit to pummel the Flyers into submission in the 3rd period. O' Friar of the Forecheck, today is another day and we ask for these few things from you. Grant Ovechkin to light the lamp early and often, Brashear to knock the snot out of Cote and Laich to net his first NHL Playoff goal, and for the chosen one, Huet, give him clean ice underneath his skates, unobstructed sight lines free of that demoness Hartnell. We ask for a 4 - 2 vicotry.

Well done JSchon.

2 hours till we head down to the phone booth. Saw the ultimate hairdoo on Friday night there: the mullet hawk. It kicked all kinds of a@@!

"If you build it They will Come"

Then I have all the Caps numbers on there... well, most of them.

I can rotate it to Hockeytown whenever.

What do you think?

Amen JSchon

828, you should definitely enter the wash post pic contest - bring a camera!

mauree - Im getting on NBC today - I promise!!!

You know, today would have been a good day for you to go to a game. 3 hours down, 3 hours back - no big deal when you have a game at 2pm.

That's mean 828. Salt in the wound... salt in the wound...

My bad... maybe another game will be during the day. I'm just saying it's a lot better than driving back at 10pm.

Good Hockey Day to All of My Fine Fellow Fans!! :-D

I am heading out soon but wanted to stop by to applaude all of you for supporting our team - wearing red, making signs, slapping on face paint, writing prayers, getting mull-hawks (Steve - you're doing that, right?!? ;-)) ... the list goes on and on!! You're the best 7th player in the NHL!

Let's make this the LOUDEST game yet and let's keep it loud, even when (IF!!) the Flyers score. Not to worry - the cardiac kids will take care of business!

Posted by: Boo! | April 13, 2008 11:20 AM | Report abuse

It's not too late, mauree - singles are still available on Ticketmaster and you could hit the road RIGHT NOW!!!! :-D

Nice mom that I am, sent the kids to the Phone Booth today to watch the Great 8! (decked out in red--even their hair! and signs) Hope they have fun while Dad and I watch from home! Next game is ours!

Sounds good 828 on the signage.

Too late for the mullet hawk Boo, if my hair were any shorter I'd be bald.

What time does VC open?

So as we all get ready for game 2, I thought I would share this:

If you've read "The Hockey Sweater", you know there is a line in it like "we all wore the number 9 of Maurice Richard. On the ice we were 5 maurice richards rushing 5 maurice richards.

At game 1, at a line for the 5 urinals on the club level, the 5 guys at the front were all wearing 8s. I almost started laughing (and probably would have beaten up). Think about that when your kids are playing and its 5 Alex Ovechkins against 5 Alex Ovechkins.

Oh yeah, and unleash the fury and all that.

I think I'm ready for the game. 2.5 hours to go.

I don't know what time it opens, but I am heading out soon to do a few things along the way. Have you ever considered hair (mull-hawk) extensions?!? ;-)

old time hockey:
I have not read the book, but saw the cover of the video - I wondered if they were all supposed to be little Rockets ...

Sounds like you have all your bases covered, but you may want to have am emergency power source for that defibrillator - knowing our boys, you'll need it!!! :-D

Gotta run - "see" you all at the VC!!
