Nylander: "It's A Good Situation" (Updated)

Michael Nylander is back - and he's not planning on going anywhere.

The veteran center confirmed moments ago that his Potomac home was put on the market, but he also was quick to say the sale has nothing to do with his status with the Caps. In fact, he said, the Nylanders are probably going to end up keeping the house.

"My wife thought that [Potomac] was too far away," Nylander said. "She wanted to be closer to things, in Georgetown. But we're here now. I'm happy where I am, but my wife wanted to move. But I think we are going to convince her to stay [in Potomac] because it's good for our [six] kids, a good area to go to school and play hockey. If we move downtown, maybe not."

"We got back two days ago. Everyone is jetlagged, but back in school."

I also asked Nylander about all of the trade rumors (Vancouver, New York, New Jersey, etc.) that surfaced over the summer. He acknowledged that he heard them, but he said he's not worried. And for good reason:

"I have a no move clause in my contract," he said. "So it's really up to me if I want to move. I want to stay here and I'm looking forward to the season. There's lots of rumors about lots of players all the time."

Nylander also said he's not thinking too much about which line he'll play on this season. (If you remember, I reported earlier this summer that the coaching staff has him penciled in on the third line, skating between, Tomas Fleischmann and Chris Clark, rather than on the first or second line with one of the Alexes).

"It's out of my control," he said. "Coach made good decisions last year. I'm sure he will do the same this year, and I expect lots of myself. I expect to be back to myself from the injury."

"You always want to play as much as possible, but performance will tell where everyone will play. So I am not worried about it."

So overall you're happy here in Washington?

"Yeah," he said. "It's a good situation. Last year was a big year for this team, and with the new confidence, we should be ready to go at the start."

As for his surgically repaired shoulder, he said it's fine.

"I played in a physical game in Stockholm, and I didn't have any problem," he said. "It feels good."

So there you have it, Michael Nylander in his own words.

I think Nylander, now that he's healthy, will be a productive player for the Caps. But I do have concerns about how he's going to fit in (both on the ice and in the dressing room) after missing last year's run, which brought a close team even closer. I also wonder how he's going to take a reduction in playing time (if it comes to that.)

I guess we'll know soon enough.

Note: Don't forget to watch Washington Post Live on Comcast SportsNet tonight. I'm on with Coach Bruce Boudreau.

Update:I'm also told Brian Pothier skated on his own wearing a coaching jumpsuit this morning. I wrote last week that he was making progress, and it now sounds like we've got further proof.

excellent coverage Tarik!!

I look forward to WaPo Live, keep up the great work!

Posted by: fullright | September 9, 2008 1:36 PM | Report abuse

Good stuff Tarik. Nylander seems to be saying all the right things. This is how I was hoping it would shake out. Whether Nylander is on the 1st, 2nd or 3rd line I expect him to be a fixture on the power play so there will be plenty of time for him to get on the score sheet.

Posted by: Sombrero Guy | September 9, 2008 1:37 PM | Report abuse

Where in NJ Greg S?

Nyls playing third line? Wow, we are deep at center.

Posted by: Steve R | September 9, 2008 1:37 PM | Report abuse

Nice Tarik - that concludes those rumors.

Posted by: 828 | September 9, 2008 1:37 PM | Report abuse

Excellent news and excellent work Tarik! The quote about his house and kids could not have been better if you'd scripted it. Hopefully this puts all the silly speculation to rest.

Will be interesting to see Nyles' line/linemates.

I especially appreciate the heads-up on WaPo Live - heading to the DirecTV DVR scheduler now!

Posted by: Jill | September 9, 2008 1:43 PM | Report abuse

Still can't imagine Nylander being on the 3rd line. I would prefer Nylander moving to wing. Ovechkin, Backstrom, Semin, Fedorov, and Nylander all need top 6 minutes in my opinion. I think Kozlov is a good supplement to Ovechkin on the top line, and that gives a very solid 3rd line of Laich, Clark, and Fehr.

Of course there will be injuries, so all that will probably be thrown out a few weeks into the season. But Nylander should be getting top 6 minutes.

Posted by: Aaron | September 9, 2008 1:50 PM | Report abuse

Aaron, Moving Nyls to wing is like moving Kozlov to center. Sure he can play there, but it's not his position. Oh, and Backstrom too. He was better at center than at wing. BB should play him where he helps the team most, and if that is 3rd line center, so be it.

A top flight player who WANTS to stay in Washington. Hmmm, who woulda thunk it?

Posted by: Leeguru | September 9, 2008 1:54 PM | Report abuse

Well, if I had ever predicted Nylander would be traded, I defniitely would have preened myself at the news that his house was on the market. I mean, it's like conclusive proof! What could possibly go wrong? ;-)

Posted by: norske | September 9, 2008 2:01 PM | Report abuse

Good job, Tarik. The comment about Nyls' wife wanting to move into Georgetown should tell everyone that she'd never approve a move to the Alberta prairie or any other small market. She sounds like an urban east coast woman who yearns for the culture of DC, six kids and all.

Thanks for the top notch report on Nylander, its nice to have him back in the fold.

Is there any chance someone here can give us NARCF's- er, I mean out of town Caps fans, a recap of the WPL show? Thanks.

Posted by: honed | September 9, 2008 2:27 PM | Report abuse

Nyls on the 3rd line is fine by me. If he has two gritty wingers, his puck possession skills will frustrate the hell out of opposing teams. You have to run him and chance a penalty to get the puck from him. If the 3rd line can play most of their shift with the puck, the Caps will be far better off for it.

2 weeks until preseason...

Tarik, are the preseason games going to be televised?

Posted by: oo7 | September 9, 2008 2:29 PM | Report abuse

We're going to start Nylander on a checking line w/ Brashear and Doig.

That is all.

Posted by: McPhail | September 9, 2008 2:34 PM | Report abuse

This is why you will see nyls playing some wing this year. 1st and 2nd line.

Posted by: capscaps | September 9, 2008 2:36 PM | Report abuse

Hey, great job Tarik. i am sure that Nyls will show his stuff and get top playing time also. He was great to watch last year. He just needs to be on a line with a great shooter. Not that he can't shoot, because he gesta bunch of goals too, but he sure as heck can see the ice and pass the puck like nobody else can.....

I applaud the Caps for this over the years.

If players develop near expectations (that means Flash, Fehr, and Alzner plus some D). If Clark, Nylander, and Semin are healthy. If Jose Theodore is the right Jose, then this team has no big weaknesses. Lots of ifs, but I think this team goes deep into the playoffs. Which costs me more money in tickets, but winning is fun.

Posted by: Caps 423 | September 9, 2008 4:08 PM | Report abuse

Glad Nylander is back and healthy, now, can we stay healthy for an entire season or is our age catching up to us, that is the real question? This was the second shoulder surgery correct so no more shoulder injuries, Right????
"The season is approaching"!!!

Posted by: Greenie | September 9, 2008 4:22 PM | Report abuse

Nylander will probably be playing less time even strength but he'll be playing on the Power Play a lot.

Nylander wouldn't really be on the 3rd line. I'd say it's a 2a, 2b type thing. And With Fedorov getting older I'd imagine that Nylander would play a couple of shifts with Laich and Semin to give Feds a rest.

I expect his ice time to be around 17-18 minutes.

Posted by: Tyler | September 9, 2008 4:40 PM | Report abuse

Man, I hope the trade rumors are laid to rest. i talked to nylander yesterday, wrote what information i knew and he confirms that info today! Man i am good. Anyone else PISSED NHL 09 is not out till tomorrow...

Help, panic, no rumors of Nylander leaving for a bag of pucks and Mats Sudin (puff, puff -- running about like chicken little)? When will the Caps ever release the Capettes roster so I can stare at them like the Redskinettes in my mom's basment (puff, puff -- still running around)? The Caps defense will suck because Alzner will play for the bigs and Pothier's going to skate, too (yet more panic ensues).

Steve R.

In Princeton. I used to watch the Princeton U hockey team in Baker Rink when it had chicken wire around it back before glass. I remember one game against Harvard. Princeton down by 2 with 1 minute plus to play, but their play should have had them well in the lead. We were all screaming at them and pounding on the wire making one hell of a racket. Princeton won it in regulation. The place went nuts.

What a wonderful feeling to know we might send perfectly fine NHL material to Hershey this year rather than robbing them of AHL players. There was a lot of positive anticipation at this time last year, but you can feel an even higher level of confidence from everybody.

The idea of talent like Nylander being our third line center just gives me a big evil grin. I've also heard talk of Clark centered 3rd that would be a combo bruiser scoring line too... ah the possibilities.

Posted by: TheCapitalist | September 9, 2008 7:12 PM | Report abuse

It's not our roster that will win us a cup. It's our beautiful capettes. They will distract the opposition. Well except for Crosby, he will be salivating while watching all the guys skate around the rink.

If you recall from last year, Nylander's wife was the one who put the kabosch on the plans to go to Edmonton for more $$$, so I am inclined to believe him when he says that she wanted to sell the house and move to GTown (didn't someone post the other day that they wanted a house that they saw in GTown?). Anyway, glad to hear that he is sticking around!

actually its a better team then last year as Nylander probably would have added an additional 30-40 points had he been healthy last half of the season as well as really we've gained 40-80 points with these guys (Nyls,Clark)

I'm somewhat of a giant videogame nerd so let me add my two cents here:

NHL 09 shipped, yesterday. So, technically, it did come out, but not for sale anywhere outside of California where they could actually have gotten the games in that day.

NHL2k9, on the other hand, actually shipped out on Monday, the 8th, for an in-store release date of the 9th.

I could be wrong, but I fully expect to get my copy tonight after work, after the overnight shipping.

Okay guys let me break it down. Nyls has to be on the 2nd line. He has the best stickhandeling(besides ovie); can stickhandle in a phone booth. Offense flows much better and can creat for others. FEDS should be on the 3rd line. He fits better there. Remember FEDS is old so being on the 3rd line helps him out(less minutes) and he can play on the PK as well. Lets see if FEDS ego gets in the way playing on the 3rd line. Top line is set. Kozlov-backstrom-ovie(dont mess with that). Semin-nylander-clark(90% sure)

Still, having a two time Selke winner on your third line...well you could do worse.

He got it done in net..But no one carried us.

I like having Feds on third line, to "save" him for logging too many minutes. I'd also like to see him sitting out on back to back games ocassionally. We just need to remember its a marathon not a sprint. I like Nylander on the second line with Semin and Clark. That line would be as potent as the first.

If I write an up-to-date article about Ovie, and find a recent decent photo of him (which should not be hard - they are ALL over the Internet), can you please get your editors to put that in place of what is the the 'goal oriented' section of WaPo's Caps landing page?!? ;-) For the love of Ovie, PLEASE get them to change that!!! Heck, even an article about your lowly blog family would better than that! (For the record, we may be lowly, but we're oh so adorable ... ;-)).

I don't know: looks like coach of the year needs some coaching. Just becuase Feds can mentor Semin, doesn't mean he needs to be on his line.

I think we all agreee Feds is not going to give us what we need game i and game out on 2nd line. He'll be great on 3rd line and PK, maybe some PP

That's pretty much the lineup I would go with, but apparently Bruce wants Semin to play on the RW. He did so in the Worlds and that way if Ovechkin takes a long shift, they'll both be on the ice at the same time. It'll be interesting to see how things shake out.

I pretty much posted that message then went to bed. Struggling in work this morning though!

Sr Coach Advisor,
I'd go with that line up too. If Feds misses the second game of a few back to back games I could see Brooks centering the third line with Bradley playing LW. Or maybe Osala may get a shot at that 3rd line LW slot. Depends on his camp I suppose.

Yes my man... its a regular season FHL... We've only been talking about it for 2 month... And I've been trying to get people in it for the last 3 weeks...

Where have you been?

@everybody else

I know its a long season and Fed's it long in the tooth, but there is no denying that the best line in the WHC was OV/Feds/Semin...

I wouldnt mind seeing Feds centering Semin from time to time.

Honestly you could put a wooden indian on roller blades with OV and Backstrom and it would average 1/4 per game.

if Fehr develops during the season...

Brash/Steckel/Bradley 6 toi

I like your lines, however, I would just switch Fehr and Clark. I really believe Clark with be on that first line with Backstrom on Ovechkin.

Yosh, the only place You-Eh carried this team is out the door in the first round. He deserves something but it is not a standing ovation. As far as Pothier, his coming back does NOTHING to improve this team. Personally I wish him well, but I wsih it is somewhere else not here. Poti would look good in another sweater as well, free up cap space, on offense lost at all and very little defense lost either.

I dont think Pothier is coming back...You dont have to worry. Pothier has been clear that he is not concerned with playing hockey right now. He is hanging around with the team so he can skate, and lightly work out as he tries to crawl out of his concussion symptoms.

He also lives here, so cut him a break..he is not trying to jump back on the ice..just get well.

The correct spelling of Pittsburgh is with an "h".

From where did you get this info that Pothier does not want to come back and play? My impression is that he woould like to come back as soon as possible. For that I don't blame him, it is just that he is not a player we need on the team at this point in time. A bottom 4 defenseman is not that much of an asset.

@Get A Clue
And who actually cares how you spell it other than the hillbillies, retards, and drunks who live in that festering cesspool?

Posted by: Bob | September 11, 2008 10:54 AM | Report abuse

In fact why doesn't everyone on the list just start to refer to it as festering cesspool. You know the festering cesspool Penguins lost again last night! The festering cesspool Penguins signed another over rated player today! That way we won't offend your delacate sensibilities by misspelling you hometown.

What's the difference between Boo and lipstick?

Hey guys -- Pothier managing skates and Pothier being fit to play are two REALLY different things. Just because he's up on a pair of skates does not mean he'll be ready to play, this season or even ever.

Give the guy a break. He's trying to get himself back to normal and do a little light skating with the guys.
