Another Take on the Semin Situation

Just found this story from the Associated Press in Moscow. Not much new, but I thought it was worth passing along.

Well, this article seems to indicate that the coaches did know of Semin's travel difficulties. Seems that the first stories that Semin just blew this off without anyone knowing just aren't true.

More drama for Team Russia.

Posted by: freakinandpeakin | April 19, 2007 10:04 AM | Report abuse

So IMO here's the most interesting quote from that article:

"In the interest of the national team, its internal atmosphere, I consider that there's no spot for Semin in the team," Bykov told the Rossiyskaya Gazeta daily. "This would have never happened in the NHL. Is our team a kind of kindergarten?"

Well, actually, it has happened in the NHL. And Semin was fined not cut from the team. Also, the Russian National Team does not pay the players to take part in the Worlds, so just how comparable is something like this happening in the NHL, where the players are paid and surely have a higher degree of responsibility to their employer?

The more this goes on the more Russia looks bad and Semin looks better. Those involved in Team Russia should just shut up and move on...

Posted by: Jay | April 19, 2007 10:09 AM | Report abuse

Stranger and stranger this gets.

Posted by: EricS | April 19, 2007 10:36 AM | Report abuse

I agree with you Jay.
Team coaching/management is looking worse the more they talk.

Someone should also point out to Team Russia that in the NHL the players also don't buy or arrange their own travel.

The Associated Press, now there's a bastion of truth and fact finding. They can't spell city names correctly, and when some kids were fired for driving an ice resurfacer to Burger King, they misquoted everyone involved, got several facts wrong and put a picture of a Zamboni when it was an Olympia that was involved. Do we really think the AP is going to dive into a story to get the facts right? I don't trust them anymore. Heck, who knows if they were actually in Russia to cover the story.

Posted by: The AP?!?!? | April 19, 2007 11:59 AM | Report abuse

Let me translate that for everyone. It doesn't fit with whay I believe is true about Semin so therefore it must all be false.

Posted by: freakinandpeakin | April 19, 2007 12:11 PM | Report abuse

"Semin flew to the Siberian city of Krasnoyarsk to see his parents, but failed to get a return ticket for an early flight on Monday and missed the start of the training by about five hours."

Guilty as charged!

Posted by: caphcky | April 19, 2007 12:55 PM | Report abuse

at the bottom, it says ovechkin was cut off too. *sigh*

Posted by: chris | April 19, 2007 1:04 PM | Report abuse

to caphcky and others cut from the same cloth, it must just be awful to walk in your shoes, and have such a negative outlook on virtually everything. pathetic. With that I will sign off forever - reading your stuff is a complete waste of time.

Posted by: Bob Johnson | April 19, 2007 1:07 PM | Report abuse

Chris, I think that is in reference to the road trip team Russia is taking and not the team. I think it just means AO won't be making that trip for those pre-tournament games.

Posted by: freakinandpeakin | April 19, 2007 1:32 PM | Report abuse

In the end, Semin had to make his own arrangements and they weren't to the liking of the Russian federation which behaves more like an employer than a first class sports organization. SO be it. Semin got the screw. I can't blame the kid for going home for a few days to see his family. If the coaches can't handle that, screw them. Semin, in the meantime, needs a personal assistant to take care of the details for him, and help in the decision making process because it could all have been worked out. Whatever. Its just the Worlds and will likely never see Ovie and Semin again, unless they get bounced from the 1st round, at which point they likely won't play anyway.

If Malkin becomes available, does he get to play or are the Russians snubbing him too? Seems like their main interest are players that stayed in Russia rather than go to the NHL. Funny, those that can go, do go.

How long is it going to take for the Blue Jackets to hire Hartley?

Posted by: Cody | April 19, 2007 1:45 PM | Report abuse

what exactly is he guilty of in your opinion caphcky, that he hasnt already been punished for? we all know he showed up late hes not disputing that. i dont think you even know what youre arguing about. whats your point?

Bob,
I encourage you to stay around and help improve the comment section.

With more balanced and thought provoking comments they'll get bored, become distracted by a shiny object, and disappear.

The prices for the top UFA Centers look to be going up with their playoff output.

Drury and Gomez getting the 1 and 2 stars on NHL.com.

I hope Buffalo doesn't decide to keep Drury instead of Briere.

caphcky, you are truly amazing. That right back at your sister comment reflects an intellectual depth and quality of thought that you had previously chosen not to reveal. We're impressed

way to go, caphcky. that right back at your sister comment revealed quality of thought and intellectual depth you'd previously chosen not to reveal. We're impressed.

Posted by: Mike Marson | April 19, 2007 2:14 PM | Report abuse

so then why the pointless and unnecessary "guilty as charged" comment, are you that bored? nothing you say ever has any meaning, youre like a parrot that just repeats things but doesnt know what its saying.
according to your name youre supposed to be a caps fan. that doesnt mean crap on the team, players and management until its convenient for you to cheer for them when they are consistantly successful(in the near future). From what we have been told, the lineup for next year will potentially and hopefully look something like this:

ovechkin (fa/drury/briere/gomez) fa/zubie?
semin backstrom fehr/fleischmann
pettinger gordon clark
brashear sutherby laich

fa/trade mo
pothier jurcina
shultz green/eminger

if george and ted dont do everything in their power this summer to get the lineup as close as possible to this then you have reason to be upset.
if you have a problem with how i think, and how i assume management thinks the team will look next year then youre just an idiot, and you should look for a new team.

Cody,
Why would the Blue Jackets hire Hartley? They already have Hitchcock as their coach.

Bob Johnson,
Why do you have to be such a drama queen? I'm not going to defend caphcky. But come on, stay if you want, go if you must but don't act like a martyr because you don't like a stupid comment.

The bottom line is that Semin didn't show up when he was supposed to. I admire the Russian coach for not pampering these prima donnas.

Jay,
Its clearly more than 'a stupid comment'. Its every day the same tired 3rd grade mentality and comments.

He's not a Caps fan. The website for his 'blog' is all New England teams.

I guess he's waiting to be semi-blocked from this site like the Caps message board.

If only daddy loved and hugged him every so often.

I don't think Morrison is going anywhere.

This whole Semin thing really isn't a big deal until it directly affects him showing up for the Caps...

Posted by: Graham | April 19, 2007 5:15 PM | Report abuse

i highly doubt Semin is a prima dona, this is an unfortunate situation for everyone. but like graham said, this is not a big deal untill it affects him showing up with the caps(which we have alrady seen what happens). lets stop bickering and now focus on rooting against the devils and sabers, right?

Posted by: timbers | April 19, 2007 5:24 PM | Report abuse

If ovechkin came late, do u think he would of been cut or it would of been kept quiet?

Has everyone forgotten this exchange from a La Canfora chat in 2005 about Semin missing a Caps charter flight?

Tarik -- Perhaps you should take JLC up on his offer to discuss what happened and let us know how the Capitals reacted.

*****

"Washington, D.C.: Forget the Skins, what about the Caps? Will the Semin/Army issues be worked out? Will they sign another veteran defenseman or two?

Jason La Canfora: Great to have the Caps back, but I worry about them. They are going to really struggle, I fear. If I'm a Caps fan now, I have to focus on individuals and hope that out of their legion of young players a few show they can really play in this league.

This Semin thing could get ugly. He has never seemed that fond of being here, has had his share of issues with teammates and coaches and this might be a ploy for him to stay in Russia, where he is most comfortable.

The Caps really need his talent, but he has already proven to be a headache.

ask me about the time I tried to help get him on a plane to Pittsburgh at BWI after he missed the charter sometime."

Posted by: McLean, VA | April 19, 2007 5:28 PM | Report abuse

Slappy,
Its a feed the troll kind of thing, y'know? If everyone ignored caphcky he'd only be talking to himself and eventually get bored and leave. But a proclamation extra drama style that one will never come back is silly. That's all I was trying to say. Anyhoo...

McLean,
I'm sure Jason will talk about trying to help Semin get a flight to Pittsburgh but there's a lot more to the story surrounding that incident than is really known. Jason's story is just kinda funny really, nothing really that damning (and kinda ridiculous-like funny). I don't think the Caps had any reaction to Jason's story because the incident took place well after Semin had already missed the charter and he was already in trouble. If you want to ask him yourself shoot him an email at lacanforaj@washpost.com. He'll answer you. (By the way, I say this because I know Jason well and we've chatted about all of it- while drinking of course).

Slappy, slappy, slappy.....I think it would be a good bet to say I've been to AT LEAST TWICE as many Caps games as you have. Think what you want....I've been a Caps fan over 15 years.

Again you've proven my statement..."Caps fans bashing Caps fans for being Caps fans".

Posted by: caphcky | April 20, 2007 7:55 AM | Report abuse

oh slappy, i think caphcky really got you with that one. been to more than twice as many game as you. that surely is the gold standard for being a fan. so all of you who have only followed the team for say 5 years, really can't be bigger fans than caphcky since he's been to WAY more games than you..

as i always say, "Caps fans bashing people who claim to be Cap fans for posting useless, negative, non-fact based comments on Cap blogs"

Not to detract from the troll feeding, but did anyone else enjoy watching Ottawa send the Pens off to an early summer last night?

hey caphcky, there's an old adage that seems to apply to you perfectly. something about having 1 year of experience 15 times, rather than 15 years of experience. haven't learned much, have you?

Posted by: On Ice | April 20, 2007 4:58 PM | Report abuse

I think that it is wrong to punish that hard because Semin didn`t do that on purpuse. That`s what I think. What do you feel if you are unable to see your parents after a long NHL-season? Semin did what he had to do. He is a guy who respects his family and also his country and the Caps. But you know, things are not so well in the Russian team anyway...
