Open thread: USA-Canada gold medal game

Canada goalie Roberto Luongo and USA goalie Ryan Miller will each need to be solid in net with gold at stake. ( Scott Gardner/AP)

A rivalry is renewed as the undefeated U.S. men take on the hometown Canadians (NBC, 3:15 p.m.) with Olympic gold on the line. Will the Americans pull off another stunner? (Get your pep talk here.)

Update: We're goin' to overtime, thanks to Zach Parise's goal with 25 seconds remaining.

Update 2: It's over. Sidney Crosby was the hero in overtime to give Canada its victory on home soil.

Otherwise, why Cherry in the US?

Let's roll boys!

Posted by: KireDCU | February 28, 2010 3:19 PM | Report abuse

Waiting for the game to start with all the commercials is like waiting for the super bowl to start.....I looked on Craiglist yesterday the cheaper ticket I could find was $3000 for a nose bleed.

Remember Lake Placid boys!

Posted by: Terptwin | February 28, 2010 3:20 PM | Report abuse

McCreary is officiating. Expect some awful calls.

Posted by: ccCapsfan | February 28, 2010 3:20 PM | Report abuse

Shot blocking by Canada is annoying the CRAP out of me!

Posted by: wtf_e_fehr | February 28, 2010 3:26 PM | Report abuse

Can I just get some SOG's?

I think Luongo will cave!

Posted by: wtf_e_fehr | February 28, 2010 3:31 PM | Report abuse

can we win some faceoffs pls?

Posted by: cbs75 | February 28, 2010 3:33 PM | Report abuse

US has made some very weak and very dangerous clearing attempts.

Posted by: wtf_e_fehr | February 28, 2010 3:39 PM | Report abuse

damnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnn!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Posted by: cbs75 | February 28, 2010 3:40 PM | Report abuse

It would be only fitting for Patrick Kane to get the next goal. Come on States. Let's tie this thing up!

Posted by: Terptwin | February 28, 2010 3:40 PM | Report abuse

Bears beat baby pens.. in shootout... varly was in net

Posted by: samb99 | February 28, 2010 3:40 PM | Report abuse

why'd it have to be Toews??!

Posted by: rachel216 | February 28, 2010 3:41 PM | Report abuse

FYI
The Bears just won 2-1 in a shootout at Wilkes-Barre. Varly #1 star.

Posted by: tess2201 | February 28, 2010 3:41 PM | Report abuse

Yay Varly!

Come on USA.

Posted by: rachel216 | February 28, 2010 3:42 PM | Report abuse

Of course Canada gets the first PP. McCreary is Canadian!

Posted by: rachel216 | February 28, 2010 3:43 PM | Report abuse

A weak call on the US, a bunch of no-calls for Canada...this US team could be the Caps.

Posted by: cbs75 | February 28, 2010 3:45 PM | Report abuse

It's good to see Varly was sharp in another conditioning stint for Hershey.

Posted by: Terptwin | February 28, 2010 3:50 PM | Report abuse

KEEP FIGHTING BOYS!!!

Posted by: wtf_e_fehr | February 28, 2010 3:52 PM | Report abuse

We need to set up on offense much better

Posted by: KireDCU | February 28, 2010 3:55 PM | Report abuse

McCreary has proven over the years that he is the go to guy when you want to strongly influence the outcome of a game.

Posted by: ccCapsfan | February 28, 2010 3:56 PM | Report abuse

Maybe the Olympic game can go like the Hershey game did. Hershey was originally down 1-0 during the first period. Then tied it up in Period 2. And won in a shootout.

One can only hope for a comeback victory.

Posted by: CapsFan75 | February 28, 2010 3:57 PM | Report abuse

Pretty awful play by Erik Johnson ending up in a goal.

Posted by: ccCapsfan | February 28, 2010 3:58 PM | Report abuse

I feel like I'm watching this on CBC rather than NBC... could these commentators get any more pro-Canadian?????

Posted by: Vermonters | February 28, 2010 4:03 PM | Report abuse

noticed Crosby is no longer wearing an 'A'...interesting, gold medal game, and Crosby is stripped of the 'A'...did it go to Morrow?

Posted by: twogirlsdad | February 28, 2010 4:06 PM | Report abuse

@vermonters: they are all Americans. Emrick just likes to make it sound exciting.

Posted by: ccCapsfan | February 28, 2010 4:11 PM | Report abuse

Finally, a US PP.

Posted by: MReilly9 | February 28, 2010 4:14 PM | Report abuse

finally PP us

Posted by: wtf_e_fehr | February 28, 2010 4:14 PM | Report abuse

Oh stop already with the comments about McCreary. "Gee, we only lost because of McCreary". Wonder what you'll say if the US wins. I don't like hockey, even though I'm Canadian, but have to admit that this game is on my TV right now. I just hope we can add even more gold medals to our total. The US is in the lead for the medal count, but not in golds. So, bite me.

Posted by: gorton | February 28, 2010 4:14 PM | Report abuse

Good call. Team USA goes on the PP. It's our turn now!

Posted by: Terptwin | February 28, 2010 4:14 PM | Report abuse

noticed Crosby is no longer wearing an 'A'...interesting, gold medal game, and Crosby is stripped of the 'A'...did it go to Morrow?
Posted by: twogirlsdad | February 28, 2010

There were three alternate captains from the beginning and the extra "A" has rotated between Crosby, Iginla, and Pronger.

Posted by: Dalliquippa | February 28, 2010 4:15 PM | Report abuse

@gorton

If you don't like hockey why are you even on this open thread?

Posted by: MReilly9 | February 28, 2010 4:16 PM | Report abuse

The Canadians are doing a good job of forcing us wide on offense, thereby limiting our second chances.

Posted by: Terptwin | February 28, 2010 4:17 PM | Report abuse

USA looks like they're playing scared. Rushing their passes and playing very sloppy.

Posted by: tess2201 | February 28, 2010 4:17 PM | Report abuse

@ccCapsfan I think the crowd is doing a good enough job with that. We could use a little love every once in a while.

Posted by: Vermonters | February 28, 2010 4:17 PM | Report abuse

MReilly9 - It's the Olympics! I even watch the luge, even though I think they're crazy people doing it. Oh look, we just got another goal

Posted by: gorton | February 28, 2010 4:21 PM | Report abuse

We're not out of this one. We need to play our game: forecheck, crash the net, and make good on rebounds.

Posted by: Terptwin | February 28, 2010 4:21 PM | Report abuse

Great opportunity by Jack Johnson. That's exactly what we need to be doing...getting in Luongo's face.

oh wow we caught a break! oh well! come on USA, luongo looks shaky.

Posted by: rachel216 | February 28, 2010 4:30 PM | Report abuse

Patrick Kane is a pretty great player.

Posted by: ccCapsfan | February 28, 2010 4:31 PM | Report abuse

This is crazy but I am beginning to like Brooks Orpik as a player.

Posted by: MReilly9 | February 28, 2010 4:33 PM | Report abuse

Oh no, the US has finally got a goal. My neighbours, students on hockey scholarships, are sobbing in their beers.

Posted by: wtf_e_fehr | February 28, 2010 4:38 PM | Report abuse

@Mreilly9: I've been thinking the same thing. Maybe we can get a group discount on therapy. :^)

Posted by: ccCapsfan | February 28, 2010 4:41 PM | Report abuse

... too many turnovers by USA. It really scares me.

gorton: you're not a hockey fan, why did you choose to come to a Capitals blog????

Posted by: rachel216 | February 28, 2010 4:43 PM | Report abuse

exactly. just keep peppering luongo with shots. he's looking shaky just playing the puck.

Posted by: rachel216 | February 28, 2010 4:45 PM | Report abuse

Any predictions on GMGM's moves over the next few days? (I know that that is actually impossible to predict what he will do.)

Posted by: MReilly9 | February 28, 2010 4:49 PM | Report abuse

What I want to know is why the US didn't go with the white uniforms and make the Canadians wear their losing red?

Posted by: ccCapsfan | February 28, 2010 4:50 PM | Report abuse

Go USA! Go Boys! You CAN & WILL WIN GOLD. Do it, boys! Nothing can beat the USA spirit. You are golden boys!

Posted by: Post-ing | February 28, 2010 4:51 PM | Report abuse

Agreed ccCapsfan. After all, we are the "home" team today. If it had been up to me, I would've had the team wear those replica 1980 jerseys again.

The same idea if it goes to the shootout.

This could be epic.

Why did it have to be Crosby! Pens fans will never let this go!

Posted by: capscoach | February 28, 2010 5:59 PM | Report abuse

Yep, what can you say. I still like OV better, but blah blah Crosby has a Cup and a Gold Medal. We'll never hear the end of this. What stage is acceptance?

Posted by: LloydChristmas | February 28, 2010 5:59 PM | Report abuse

Help. How can I handle seeing Crosby's face plastered on the screen and read all the stupid comparisons between him and Ovie (Stanley Cup & Olympic Gold vs. no trophies)? Maybe this will fuel all our Russians to retaliate.

Posted by: caraveli | February 28, 2010 5:59 PM | Report abuse

One good thing to come out of this, now that Canada has won gold - you really think that NHL will not go to Socchi!

Posted by: ruskyfan1 | February 28, 2010 5:59 PM | Report abuse

We REALLY need a Cup now!

Posted by: capscoach | February 28, 2010 6:00 PM | Report abuse

That was one of the best games I've seen in decades. Very reminiscent of some of the great Stanley Cup series of the late '70s. Too bad for our boys, but they have absolutely no reason to hang their heads tonight. USA, USA, USA!

Posted by: Terptwin | February 28, 2010 6:00 PM | Report abuse

That had to hurt. Personally, I was leaning toward an American win, because history doesn't favour Canada in OT situations. I'm glad we won, but I have to say that was one hell of a fight by an outstanding team. Great job, USA.

Posted by: marknesop | February 28, 2010 6:01 PM | Report abuse

I want to say this to the Pens fans that are about to come: Congrats! Your golden boy showed up in the biggest moment ever. PLEASE do not come on here and start taunting us and saying how Crosby is better than Ovechkin. I'm also sorry I said he was invisible the whole game but that's what makes great players great, they could be invisible and then all of a sudden, come up huge.

Let's just all be happy that we got to take in such an amazing game. This is why hockey is an amazing sport.

Just please show some class. That is all I have to say. (Because I know there will be Pens fans coming.)

Posted by: rachel216 | February 28, 2010 6:01 PM | Report abuse

Crosby's face is very disturbing. He bears a resemblance to Mr. Ed...

Posted by: randysbailin | February 28, 2010 6:02 PM | Report abuse

UNBELIEVEABLE

Posted by: wtf_e_fehr | February 28, 2010 6:02 PM | Report abuse

My advice Caps fans is to say congratulations to the Pits and leave it at that.

Posted by: FloridaCapsFan | February 28, 2010 6:02 PM | Report abuse

We will never hear the end of it. Crosby was barely visible all Olympics, but gets the game winner for gold. Lucky SOB. If you thought things were bad when Pitt won the Cup, it will just get worse from here. Gawd I hate him.

Posted by: cbs75 | February 28, 2010 6:02 PM | Report abuse

Worse case scenario came true. If there was any hope of the media's Crosby lovefest stalling out, it ended with that goal. He will continue to be NBC's darling. Hate to say it, but the Caps have to win the Cup to get the respect they deserve.

Posted by: kcbrichmond | February 28, 2010 6:04 PM | Report abuse

Funny though because Orpik from the Pens was playing for America, so either way, the Pens get the W. But yeah, their golden boy finally, finally, finally, showed up after being a nonfactor for 9 periods.

Congrats Pens fans...I guess?

Posted by: LloydChristmas | February 28, 2010 6:05 PM | Report abuse

The USA has nothing to be ashamed of. Going in, they didn't figure to medal. Sweden and Russia went down in flames.

Posted by: randysbailin | February 28, 2010 6:05 PM | Report abuse

When Crosby was in the corner with the puck skating around, I was thinking to myself, he better not score, he better not score, and then he scored. UGH. Awful feeling. More pressure on Ovie now, no doubt about it. It just HADDDDDDDDD to be Crosby. Why, hockey gods, do you do this to us??

I almost wish Parise just didn't score to take it into OT, it just never crossed my mind of the horror of seeing Crosby score the winner. (Just to poke a little fun, did anyone see him jump after he scored? lol)

Posted by: rachel216 | February 28, 2010 6:06 PM | Report abuse

@ rachel216

Well said!

Caps fans...this is not the time to say anything bad against Crosby! Lets face it...he came through today and how h played earlie in the seris is really not relevant. We may hate him and of course we think Ovechkin is better...but todays is Crosby's day and he deserves it

Posted by: capscoach | February 28, 2010 6:06 PM | Report abuse

Somebody tell Eddie O to Just Shut Up!

Posted by: tess2201 | February 28, 2010 6:06 PM | Report abuse

I still think too much is made of both Crosby AND Ovie in the sense of supremacy. This is a team game after all and we just witnessed a great one. Hats off to both teams! Now, let's get back to NHL business and may the CAPS kick some PENGUIN butt!

Posted by: gonchpup | February 28, 2010 6:06 PM | Report abuse

Ugliest nose on earth.

Posted by: Rocc00 | February 28, 2010 6:08 PM | Report abuse

A lot of pressure on Ovechkin now. Crosby's got the Cup and the gold medal in which he did literally win the gold for Crosby. Like capscoach said, we seriously MUST win the Cup now.

That was such a good game, I just wish someone else scored the winner. Oh well, giving my props to Crosby. Yes, I just did that.

I agree samb99. GMGM needs to do a little tinkering and if he is successful - this could be the Cap's year.

I just read Crosby's lips. He was complaining about the officiating...

The first lines and defense matched up very well, but the Canadian team depth won out when Ralfalski playing more than half the game missed his check allowing the winning goal. Miller will get MVP, without him it would not have been close. Parise long in tooth may not be back the next time, but heroes that outplay the opposition Rafalski and Kesler will. I look forward to the next quest for the gold.

Why are all the players holding a bushel of broccoli?

believe that the next 3 days are the most critical days for the franchise. GMGM and Ted your move.

It is certainly one of the most important trade deadlines in team history. Backstrom in his last season of making chump change relative to his talent. Go all in, George and Ted. The conservative approach is great but there are times when you have to throw all your chips in, or most of them. I can't see any reason why this shouldn't be one of those times for the Caps.

I'm looking forward to the pictures from the post game, post locker room celebration of Crosby and his buddies smoking cigars and drinking Champagne on the ice.

Attention all Crapital fans you need to address Sidney Crosby as MISTER Sidney Crosby, not Cindy. This man has won a Stanley Cup AND a Gold Medal, show him some respect you neophytes! LETS GO PENS!!! LETS GO PENS!!!

I don't like the posts knocking Crosby, when Kesler was his shadow whom outplayed everyone he was up against. P.S. he was not on ice for the Crosby goal.

It would take a Pittsburgh fan to celebrate a winning goal against THEIR OWN COUNTRY. Talk about classless losers...

Another reason to hate Sydney Crosby.

Thank you... well said

Sydney Crosby did not win that game for Pittsburgh...he did not win for the Pens fans. He as playing for his country. He was playing as a member of one of the most stacked teams in Olympic history. Had Ovie scored for Russia to win the Gold against the U.S. it would have been VERY bittersweet, but ultimately I would be just as upset (ok...maybe not quite). But to red-blooded American cheering Crosby's goal I have three words "go to Canada."

The Russians, with or without Ovie, were a weaker, older team. And hockey, being a team sport goes well beyond one player. The Caps are good not because they have OV...but they are better with him. The Pens are better with Crosby. It sickens me how fans, as well as the league and media make it a man v. man rivalry.

That was a hell of a game...kudos to both teams.

it's not how you start, but how you finish...

O CANADA

O Canada! Our home and native land
True patriot love in all thy sons command.
With glowing hearts we see thee rise
The true north, strong and free
From far and wide, O Canada
We stand on guard for thee.
God keep our land glorious and free
O Canada! We stand on guard for thee
O Canada! We stand on guard for thee.

O Canada! Terre de nos aieux
Ton front est ceint de fleurons glorieux!
Car ton bras sait porter l'épée
Il sait porter la croix!
Ton histoire est une épopée
Des plus brilliants exploix.
Et ta valeur, de foi trempée
Protégera nos foyers et nos droits
Protégera nos foyers et nos droits.

It is time to see what Ovie and the Caps are really made of after this. Hope they learn that nothing is given, especially when it involves the NHL (Canadian influenced) and Crosby. Congrats to Team Canada (The obviously more talented team) to finally come through in the end against the surprising hard working USA team. What else is there to say, the end result will always get the last word. Just remember that, Capitals! All the hype and accolades are for naught without the end result!

Great game! Sorry US lost, glad we won. As former DC resident, hoping to see Caps take it this year - you guys deserve it. Ovechkin is a great player - probably the best in the NHL. Makes me think of Messier in his prime (I grew up in Edmonton). Today was a big win for North American hockey, no matter what your country.

You said it Rachel: "it just never crossed my mind of the horror of seeing Crosby score the winner."

And let's not get carried away here. Crosby did not win that game. He was incredibly lucky that one of the few goals he scored happened to be the gold medal winner. He did not carry this team to victory by being a dominant player. I do NOT feel humbled by Cindy's talent. I am really unhappy by the anticipation of the media frenzy and the unfortunate comparisons between Cindy's good luck and Ovie's bad luck.

And I absolutely did not think that Canada was the superior team here. They had several weak games while the US played strong, consistent games.

The only thing I can say is the goal tending factor. Don't you think that, in the end, when strong teams battle it out between them, the goal tender who outlasts his rival is the difference maker? When Brodeur faltered, we won. Not that Miller was not outstanding. Luongo was just a little better in this game. Any thoughts?
