Osala Recalled; Fleischmann Hurting (Update)

Oskar Osala is on the ice for the morning skate, but Tomas Fleischmann is not out there. I'm not sure what's wrong with Fleischmann, but I've noticed him limping with ice taped around one leg after the past few games. He's also had ice on his shoulder.

The lines are impossible to discern because the forwards are all in white and the 'D' are wearing black. And they're not skating in threes.

Keith Aucoin and Bryan Helmer are also not here. There's no word from the team, but I'm assuming that means they have been sent down.

Update:Sergei Fedorov (sprained ankle), Alexander Semin (upper torso strain), Mike Green (bruised shoulder) and Tom Poti (groin) are all skating; Eric Fehr (shoulder) is not.

Based on what I've been able to gather, I'm guessing that Fleischmann, Fedorov, Semin, Green and Poti are questionable. Fehr is out.

I'll have more after the skate.

If this is to make up for Aucoin/Giroux getting sent down, then I'm slightly happy, otherwise, yeesh.

Not encouraging news regarding Semin coming back tonight.

Interesting....we keep changing our recalls...Well everyone who wanted to see Osala...heres the chance

Exciting.

Isn't it true there's a 0% chance of any of our injured coming back if they're not even mentioned for the morning skate? :(

Yeesh.

Wow! It's getting to the point that I'm almost afraid to check Tarik's posts in the mornings because the news just never gets any better.

Posted by: tess2201 | December 10, 2008 10:18 AM | Report abuse

So obviously it's tough to know what's going on, but if Helmer and Lepisto have been sent down then that means someone is expected to be healthy enough to come back (in addition to Sloan), right?

Up front, if Osala is up to replace Fleischmann (?) and Aucoin is being sent down, then someone else is expected to return, hopefully?

The fact that (potentially) 2 hurt guys are coming back is good news.

Posted by: Jeff_ | December 10, 2008 10:21 AM | Report abuse

And who is out there instead... Green, Poti, Fehr, Semin, Sloan all accounted for?

Posted by: oldtimehockey | December 10, 2008 10:21 AM | Report abuse

I tried to speculate what the lines would be... But I have no frigging idea...

Posted by: JSchon | December 10, 2008 10:22 AM | Report abuse

I liked what I saw of Osala in the summer. Now with some AHL seasoning where he is lighting the lamp regularly, it will be nice to see how he has come along. I just hate that it appears to be at the expense of another injury.

Any way that Gartner can play a couple games on the wing before his number is retired?

Posted by: Section117 | December 10, 2008 10:27 AM | Report abuse

This has to mean Sloan is in. Plus either Green or Poti....Also without Fehr this has to mean Semin is back because Hershey is leaving this morning for San Antonio Correct?

Posted by: Jgray85 | December 10, 2008 10:33 AM | Report abuse

Jschonn:

I guess Green & Poti must be ready to go, unless we plan to have Fedorov play defense?

As for forwards.. Fedorov/Semin? Fleischmann?

I think it's safe to say we'll see at least one or two faces back tonight.

Posted by: Semvechkin | December 10, 2008 10:33 AM | Report abuse

err, yeah, Sloan & Green will be playing, no Poti is my guess.

Completely forgot about Sloan.

Also Tarik said yesterday Clark is getting his Cast off today so possibly he will return to the lineup soon as well

Fedorov, Schutlz and Erskine are out
Which leaves us...

Green, Sloan or Poti on D
Semin and Fehr on O

I hope this Frankenstein team made out of spare parts can pull together a win over Boston. A win over such a hot team will go a long way to building up confidence. Osala is a beast in front of the net in the AHL. I hope he proves to be the same in the NHL because the Caps need to screen Thomas. Same goes for Laich, esp. w/o Fehr.

Thanks for the link, capsgirl. I get Versus here, so maybe it will be on tonight...but looks like CSN has it locally. I will wear my Caps hat proudly here in Phoenix.

Osala - Nice...looking forward to seeing him play. All these injuries are aweful, but we get to see all the kids from Hershey play which is fun for me- especially if we stay in first place!

Posted by: lylewimbledon | December 10, 2008 10:44 AM | Report abuse

Sounds like we might see Green, Sloan, and Semin back tonight. I wouldn't expect a ton from Semin or Green without any game time in weeks but it'll be nice to have them getting rounded into playing shape. With the Bruins in town we should have a huge, loud crowd a the 'booth tonight. This would be the biggest win of the season so far.

@_stevo - bad hang-nail? I assume you mean broken finger that required surgery to repair? My guess would be 6-8 weeks, based on my own finger surgery of some years back. I was in a cast for 6.

Posted by: irockthered | December 10, 2008 11:01 AM | Report abuse

Anyone know Osala's nickname?

My guess is Ozzie.

The guy who's really earning his dough in the Caps organization is the one (forget name) who reports to McPhee as "capologist." That's the job I would have gone for had I ever gotten into hockey. Probably pays even more than the rocket factory.

The question that has to be asked is where is Quintin Laing? Its not that I am a huge Laing fan, but he made some contributions last year on this level, and now the entire Bears team has been to Washington and Laing hasn't even been mentioned. Isn't that strange?

Posted by: CapsGuy | December 10, 2008 11:02 AM | Report abuse

Isn't Laing on waivers since this summer?

Posted by: lylewimbledon | December 10, 2008 11:08 AM | Report abuse

@CapsGuy

Not really strange that Laing hasn't been called up. Look at the injured players, Laing couldn't really replace any of them. If the guys getting hurt were the fourth line energy guys that is when you MIGHT see Laing, but not for Semin, Fehr, Flash, Fedorov type players who are expected to contribute offensively.

Posted by: freakinandpeakin | December 10, 2008 11:08 AM | Report abuse

@ Caps Guy

It's been mentioned that Laing has not been called up because if he gets sent back to Hershey he has to pass through waivers and the team doesn't want to risk losing him.

Posted by: Roose | December 10, 2008 11:09 AM | Report abuse

tominfl1, its Don Fishman, the capologist (assistant GM & director of legal affairs). I had the chance to listen to him speak just prior to the rash of injuries, and he was talking about how you HAVE to be prepared to make call ups and so forth. Real interesting, apparently he really loves this stuff. I can't find the article on him, though.

Laing has to clear waivers (he cleared at the start of the season to go to Hearshy). The Cpas are probably trying to avoid the risk of someone else snatching him up. Or, its simply that his "match" hasn't been hurt. Bourque tears it up, too, but we only saw him briefly.

@irockthered

I have broken my fingers maybe 10 times in my life. None of them took 6-8 weeks to heal and yes i did play hockey too with them being broken

Posted by: _stevo | December 10, 2008 11:11 AM | Report abuse

Capsguy,

Oh now ya did it! You just jinxed Laich into getting hurt so GMGM calls up Laing.

Brooksie thanks you.

;o)

Posted by: BernieWolfeFan | December 10, 2008 11:12 AM | Report abuse

@stevo

I dont think it was a normal break. I had heard that a brace was put on to hold the finger together.

It was one of those breaks where you would of cringed to look at the finger.

Posted by: SA-Town | December 10, 2008 11:13 AM | Report abuse

Anyone think it's possible that the Morning Skate Roster is simply here to mess up the Bruins? Isn't Julien one of those hawk-like guys who analyzes line-ups and plays people based on the other team? Or am I thinking of someone else?

If that's the case, though, then well-played, Bruce, well-played.

FWIW, that's exactly what I would do for every game of the season. I'd want my opposition so confused as to who's up and who's down and whatnot.

Obviously, only when your team's situation as is strange as the Caps', i mean.

a) Unless there's been a setback, it's 4-6 from earlier TeB posts.

Re: Laing,

Even aside from Laing's ability to replace someone like Flash or Fehr or Semin (as compared to say Bradley or Godron), I think he still needs to clear re-entry waivers, so the idea of an "emergency call-up" doesn't work because of the lag (I think its 24 hours, but can't remember). Moreover, if he was claimed off waivers, that would also hurt the Bears, since all their players are already up here.

Posted by: oldtimehockey | December 10, 2008 11:16 AM | Report abuse

Shultz cant even play Xbox which is driving him nuts.

Posted by: SA-Town | December 10, 2008 11:18 AM | Report abuse

stevo, healing time from a break depends of the location and severity. Given that a screw was inserted and the estimatied healing time is still 4-6 weeks, I'd say its a pretty nasty injury.

always taking things to seriously again i see, but the "want a cookie" joke was a nice throwback to the early 90's

as for the caps, i may have missed it or they may have not annouced it yet, but is jose or johnson starting tonight?

Posted by: _stevo | December 10, 2008 11:23 AM | Report abuse

IIRC it's Johnson.

Posted by: Section117 | December 10, 2008 11:29 AM | Report abuse

tominfl,
I've heard guys at Hershey call him Oz or Os. Although you could go with O^2, Big O, Double O, and of course, as you said, Ozzie or Ossie.
Laing would have to clear waivers, possibly both ways.
vkova, not a problem! I just don't recommend attempting to watch two or three games at once on there, your internet will protest, as I found out last night. :D
The one night this week I can't watch hockey and my favorite Bear is here. Figures. I also raise my glass to a repeat of cooling down the Bruins with a ten-spot.

Posted by: jmu_capsgirl | December 10, 2008 11:38 AM | Report abuse

jmu_capsgirl: The only problem with calling him "Ozzie" (a great nickname), is it is very close to "Kozzie," if that's what they call Kozlov. (Not as bad as once I played volleyball and 5 of 6 on my side were "Tom.")

RedBirdie: Thanks for info. I'd love a job as "capologist" since all I do is numbers, numbers, numbers, millions and billions, all day long. Starting perf, learning curve, support %, ad nauseum.
