Ottawa or Philadelphia?

The Caps' first-round opponent will be determined this afternoon in Philadelphia. If the Flyers beat the Pens at Wachovia Center, they'll earn the sixth seed and a matchup with the Southeast Division Caps (still sounds weird) later this week. If the Pens win, the Caps will host Ottawa (the team they beat four times in the regular season).

So what are you going to be doing around 3 p.m.? I know what I'll be watching.

We'll know dates and times of the games tonight. Based on the Wizards' schedule it's looking like Thursday or Friday and Sunday for Games 1 and 2.

Tarik, Has Emminger played well enough to stay with the team next year and/or play regularly? Or is that question mute because he is basically blacklisted - and won't be with the team no matter what.

Posted by: Dezlboy | April 6, 2008 11:13 AM | Report abuse

er, make that moot? of course, the team has been MUTE per Emminger ;-)

Posted by: Dezlboy | April 6, 2008 11:14 AM | Report abuse

That's a tough one. Steve only played in 20 regular season games. He's obviously (at least to me) capable of more than that.

I've got the feeling another team is going to figure that out.

Tarik, what's the latest on Morrison and Schultz? Thanks

Posted by: mjk | April 6, 2008 11:18 AM | Report abuse

I want Ottawa. So as much as it pains me to say it, Go Pens! (just for the afternoon)

Posted by: Anonymous | April 6, 2008 11:23 AM | Report abuse

That's a cool move by Comcast to put the Philly-Pittsburgh game on here.

I had to give them some props even after the Atlanta debacle a few weeks ago..

Posted by: Oneal | April 6, 2008 11:26 AM | Report abuse

Another reason to prefer Ottawa is that it means the Pens are the no. 1 seed, meaning that the Caps can't play them until the Eastern Conference Finals, as opposed to in Round 2 if we get Philly in round 1. I think?

Posted by: Anonymous | April 6, 2008 11:26 AM | Report abuse

What do you think about NHL on the Fly saying that the Caps would be better off against Philly than Ottawa? Given our sweep, and everything happening on Ottawa, are you as surprised to hear them say that as I am?

I don't care who we play. At this point, i think we can beat anybody in the league. These past few months have been an amazing time to be a Caps fan. Don't stop believing.

Posted by: Sombrero Guy | April 6, 2008 11:29 AM | Report abuse

We match up better with Ottawa if Big Mo and Schultzie are ailing and either Boomer or Lepisto are needed. Philly's size will give these guys trouble. If it's Philly we need size on the blueline and should get Finley signed and Alzner signed too when he's done with the Hitmen. I think amateurs can be signed and added to the playoff roster after the deadline.

Posted by: Harry | April 6, 2008 11:38 AM | Report abuse

I think you just have to worry about running into a hot goaltender in the playoffs. To me Gerber has been playing a lot better than Biron recently, but who knows?

Posted by: chris | April 6, 2008 11:42 AM | Report abuse

I hate the Flyers more than the Dallas Cowboys. I want Ottawa, Philly scares me.

Posted by: Pete Peeters | April 6, 2008 11:44 AM | Report abuse

Will Mo's injury lead to surgery? Is he out for the majority of the playoffs, ie rounds 1 and 2? What was the injury to Schultz? If I was going to call the Caps 'thin' at any position it would be D so those two losses could be significant. THey have both played very well, especially Schultz who for quite some time was the whipping boy around here and in hershey.

I am so excited! Bring on the Sens!!

Posted by: oo7 | April 6, 2008 11:46 AM | Report abuse

I'm going to try to get an update on Schultz and Morrisonn today. We'll see what the team has to say. But I'm willing to bet it won't be much, if anything at all.

As for the matchup, the Caps are in the Sens' heads a bit after sweeping them. Also, Ovechkin owns Ottawa, the Sens are banged up, they backed into the playoffs and they've got goaltending issues. So the Caps' best chance of advancing, in my opinion, would be through Ottawa. Though I think the Caps would hold their own against Philly, too.

I've got run out for a bit. I'll be back during before the Flyers-Pens game.

Posted by: Tarik | April 6, 2008 11:47 AM | Report abuse

Would much prefer the Sens as the 6th seed. Uninspired play for the last two months, shaky goaltending, an injured captain, overall free-fall. Besides, the Flyers are tough and scary...they have been playing good hockey for the past three weeks!

Posted by: Jon | April 6, 2008 11:47 AM | Report abuse

While Philly would be a cool throwback to the old days, and likely to really respark the rivalry ... I'd much rather see the Caps play Ottawa.

Ottawa has the tie-breaker over Philly

Posted by: Jon | April 6, 2008 12:17 PM | Report abuse

From a general interest point of view, Ottawa would be interesting if for no other reason than the ex cap coach Brian Murray now coaches there. He was the first coach to take the caps to playoffs..

Posted by: Rich C | April 6, 2008 12:21 PM | Report abuse

If Philly get a point for an OTL, Senators hold the tiebreaker bc of more wins.

I like what someone said earlier. I want Ottawa bc I think we can take care of business against them. Also, with Pitt being the #1 seed, we would not see them until the Conference Finals as long as Montreal takes care of Boston which they will. Montreal is 8-0 against Boston. Also, I think that Pitt/Philly series would be some sort of series. Tough, hard hitting and absolutely fantastic.

Philly/Pitt: Pitt in 6
Mon/Bos: Mon in 4
Was/Ott: Wash in 5
NYR/NJ: NJ in a boring 6

Pitt/NJ: Pitt in 5
Mon/Was: Wash in 6

Pitt/Wash: We will see

Anyone else?

Posted by: Puck #94 | April 6, 2008 12:31 PM | Report abuse

Does anyone else agree that the Caps need to improve their power play? Their passing to the point man for a quick one-time shot seem erratic; at times so sloppy it is giving the opposition plenty of short-hand opportunities to score. It is also making it easier to defend, as the opponent does not need to come out and defend it.

It has been an incredible run by the Caps. Won't the following be nice?
Prince of Wales - Capitals
Art Ross - Ovechkin
Calder - Backstrom
Conn Smythe - Ovechkin
Selke - Green
Hart - Ovechkin
Jack Adams - BB
Lester B. Pearson - Ovechkin
Maurice Richards - Ovechkin
And of course the Stanley Cup - CAPS

Congratulations to the whole organization for a job well done.

Hope to see you at the phone booth this week. I don't spend too much time on the blogs but I have yet to notice anyone putting into perspective what the Caps accomplished.

Pre BB-
6-14-1 13 points on pace for 50 points over 82 games.

With BB:
37-17-7 81 points which is a pace for 108 points over 82 games [tied with San Jose before its last game].

This turnaround is truly incomprehensible to rival the second best total in hockey. Then consider that we have the top scorer in goals and points, second best rookie scorer [and one of the most imaginative players out there], and one of the best goalies and maybe the best goaltending tandem.

Bottomline, the playoffs are great this year and it could well be a deep run. Next season could be even more exciting if GMGM can continue his run on good drafts and acquisitions.

Hopefully, Joe B will take BB to his tailor for some clothes.

I agree that I would rather see the Sens. Someone posted on the previous blog about the Philly fans coming to the VC. I do not want to see any opponents fans there. Less likely if the Sens.

Also, someone else wrote that the VC crowd was more quiet especially at the beginning when it was more tense. That is precisely when we need the fans to be their loudest to boost the team. Let's learn from that and become more vocal from the beginning. Let's boost the team since they have spent the last few months boosting us.

Selke is for forwards. Green could win the Norris. He won't because he's not Lindstom. A nomination/finalist nod would be a big win though. (also not super likely, but possible.)

And, you forgot Quintin "healthy scratch" Liang for the Masterson. (If you're going to dream, dream completely.)

I'm still pinching myself this morning. Division Champions!!!
I started following these guys on TV right before Thanksgiving and it wasn't a pretty sight at first. Made it to my first game right before Christmas (which we lost to Huet and the Habs, but I was hooked.) The energy these guys bring to the game under Bruce is unbelievable. I cringe now when I watch other teams play because I find them boring and slow.
I believe in this Caps team, their coaching staff, the management. I may not be able to get to VC for the playoffs, but I will be right here, screaming my head off for every game. Don't stop believing, indeed.

Let's go Caps!!!!

First Round - PHI (old Patrick Division)
Second Round - PIT (REVENGE)
Third Round - MTL (The Huet seria)
CUP - Detroit (REMATCH)

Would be fun!!

Even though I want Backstrom to win the Calder, It's easy to have all those points when you play with the leagie MVP (c:

There are 3 other Rookies that have just as good if not better shot to win:
1. Carey Price - MTL
2. Patrick Kane - CHI
3. Jonathon Towes - CHI

Even if he didn't win it, if he's nominated, that wold be a great feat seeing this years class of rookies is PHENOMINAL!!!

Speaking of the Sens, has anyone ever seen a fanbase more resigned to defeat than they are? Based on the postings most Sens fans make on the TSN message boards, it sounds like a lot of them would rather see us steamroll them in the first round (if we play them) just because the Caps deserve it more. A bit weird to see them waving the white flag so soon. Anyone else notice this?

I want the Sens in Round 1!!!

Got an e-mail today from the Caps that contained this important message:

Washington Capitals playoff tickets for round 1, home games 1 and 2, are now on sale. Caps fans are encouraged to purchase tickets early before the opponent is determined late Sunday and the opposing team's fans begin to purchase. It is vital to the team that the building be filled with Caps fans. The Caps will continue the Rock the Red theme throughout the playoffs, asking fans to wear red to the games and cheer on the Caps like never before.

Caps fans, if you are able, please buy your playoff tix NOW!!! The last thing we need is a bunch of Flyers fans (or to a lesser degree, Sens fans) invading our building!

Posted by: mauree | April 6, 2008 4:28 PM | Report abuse

Hi. I'm an old Canadian hockey guy who played at a high level but never the NHL. (not good enough!) I have been a huge Caps fan since OVIE came on board.(he is multi-dimensional, but will have to cut back a little on the physical side of the game in the next few years)

I'd just like to post a few thoughts again. Not that that makes me an expert, yet perhaps I have just a little insight into how hockey works....just a tiny bit.

Here's why I feel good real good about this club. Word out in the league is that NO ONE in the Eastern Conference wants to play the Caps for all the reasons we already know and have seen during the last 2 months ! Trust me on this one- it comes from good sources....

I also just saw some interviews on TSN, and the Ottawa guys look like deer caught in the headlights at the mention of the Caps! Body language suggested fear!

Now to move forward, of course Huet will have to stand on his head and Ovie and friends will have to score goals.

But here are the real keys that should make everyone feel good and comfortable.

1) Bruce Boudreau: He has won championships at every level he has coached and will NOT be out-coached. In 17 seasons behind the bench, he has seen it all! In the last 6 years, his worst win percentage was .562 ! Amazing numbers! The guy just knows how to win and you can't teach that !

2) Fedorov: Beyond Fedorov the hockey player, he has "been there-done that" and won an MVP and a Stanley Cup. So when the young guys get a little excited in some new situation not experienced before, he will know how to calm things down. He will also be able to counsel not only the young Russians, but the team as a whole. The guy is comitted and having fun again. Watch for him to carry the team and have a great playoff run. He looks like 28 and not 38 !

Defence may be a bit of an Achilles heal, but even with the lack of a few "D" studds, that should get them into round 2. After that, the Caps would be the definate underdogs because of that.

I'd bet McPhee and staff would look after that this summer with the UFA's. Some great "D" available like Brian Campbell and a few others. Who would not want to come to Washington now? They will be a Cup contender for at least the next 5 years and more...

You heard it here first: Look for AT LEAST 2 series! Trust and believe and feel good!

You local Washington fans are going to be spoiled for a long time, as will I. Enjoy it. Ovechkin comes around once in a generation at best!

I'm out of the loop on the Emminger saga. I know that he doesn't get ice time and that he requested a trade, but is there more to the story?

Posted by: Jen | April 6, 2008 4:51 PM | Report abuse

......long winded Ron continues only because I am so excited about this team today, and the next several years to come!

In all honesty, I really don't care if we play Ottawa or Philly.

Ottawa is in deep trouble as Alfredson, their Captain and leader is out indefinately. You don't replace 40 goals, 89 points and a plus 26.

Also out is gritty tough Mike Fisher who had 23 goals and Kris Kelly.

Their goaltending is suspect and their dressing room chemistry is a mess.( once again, believe me on this one!)

As for Philly, we'll demolish them with team speed and Biron the goalie is average at best and always gives big rebounds.

You can't hit what you can't catch!

Fighting is almost non-existent in the playoffs, and teams cannot take useless penalties as there is no tomorrow. If we play Philly, you'll see a different team as power plays now count big time! And look at the Caps power play NOW! Total fear into the opponents!

Their best player Simon Gagne is out with a concussion and Daniel Briere hurt his knee the other night, so he can't be 100%

Anyway, like I said, I really don't care who we play, we will win that first round !

One thing to note about philly is that they had the 2nd best power play efficiency in the Eastern conference behind only Montreal, and the 2nd best "penalty-killing" percentage in the Conference, while the Caps were middle of the road in both categories..(perhaps skewed since the arrival of Fedorov and Huet..)

I should have posted this a long time ago,
yet it's NEVER too late for a deserved compliment.

Tarik: You have been a delight to read all year! As stated above, I am a hockey junkie, and review most Canadian newspapers and several US publications concerning hockey.

Your online updates are very unique and so very welcome, and you never talk down to your audience, as so many self proessed Canadian "experts" feel the need to do!

You also have a great "feel" for the game.

Knowing it must be tough to get "space" in the Washington Post for a hockey team, where perhaps the sport occupies 4th place at best, you have done a wonderful and marvelous job.

I wish some Canadian "know-it-all" counterparts would adopt your style of update and manner of "talking" with the people who read your columns, and way your present your thoughts.

In closing, BRAVO to you Tarik! Keep up the great work!

Ron from Canada

(And NO, I am not related to tarik, and I do not know Tarik nor have I ever met him- just an opinion from far away!

Looks like we will be playing Philly.

The Pens are tanking it, 14 shots halfway through the 3rd. Appears the Pens would rather play Ottawa than the Flyers.

For the Flyers, they win and play the Caps, lose and play the Pens -- a tough draw either way, but by moving up to 6 over 8 they gain at least the hope of home-ice at some point.

Posted by: Sem-antics | April 6, 2008 5:13 PM | Report abuse

Yes, I agree that goal was huge, but he didn't even mean to do that. He flubbed the shot and ended up getting the puck back and getting the goal. I still say caps need to put laing in there instead of him.

What's with Pitt? I figured this would be a game they can win, even with Cindy out. I haven't really watched them this season, but its like they're not even trying.

Are they playing so that we can play Philly in the first round and they don't have to? Or so that we can actually have a challenge in the first round (although not completely discounting OTT) and lessen their chances of playing us in future rounds?

Useless birds...

Let's go Caps!!

We should probably buy tix in Philly to invade their building. Even if they lose, we can sell them

Posted by: CT Caps Fan | April 6, 2008 5:18 PM | Report abuse

Go on Flyers site. You can get Club seats there. $250 a pop

Posted by: CT Caps Fan | April 6, 2008 5:21 PM | Report abuse

The Pens are WORTHLESS. This team obviously cares nothing for 1st. THey want the Sens. THey are mailing it in. Personally, I don't want the Flyers. THey are a hot hot team ans we all know what kind of problem that creates. DOn;t get me wrong, I'm thrilled to be in and its good no matter what, but the Sens matchup is best for a 2nd round appearance. Stupid Pens.

I'd be with you CT, except I can't even afford upper level tickets to our playoff games, let alone Club level tickets in Philly.

Malkin taking over Cindy's title as diving team captain??

Hi mauree: Please know I enjoyed and repected your posts from the other thread.

Philly would be tough. I believe we would win, but how many injuries would we have to deal with after those almost alleged and prophetic illegal muggings and assaults to come?

That's why we have Brashear.

Posted by: Ron C. | April 6, 2008 5:27 PM | Report abuse

@CT Caps Fan

What's this "we" stuff? You're not even buying tickets to the Verizon Center games.

Posted by: keef | April 6, 2008 5:27 PM | Report abuse

Only single upper level seats left for both games when I tried to purchase.

If you own tickets and can't go, do not sell to anyone you do not know!!!!

Posted by: CT Caps Fan | April 6, 2008 5:28 PM | Report abuse

@ keef

How do you know what the hell I am doing?

Posted by: CT Caps Fan | April 6, 2008 5:28 PM | Report abuse

Man it looked like the Pens didn't give a crap at all. Bring on Filthy.

Posted by: Sombrero Guy | April 6, 2008 5:29 PM | Report abuse

Rangers & Devils playing a meaningless overtime. I guess it's about momentum at this point going into their playoff games.

Was anyone watching? Did the Rangers pull their goalie to try to win in regulation (and get home ice)?

Posted by: Raber | April 6, 2008 5:30 PM | Report abuse

Pittsburgh TANKED that game because they're sissies and they want to play Ottawa in the first round, just like Boston tanked last night because they don't want to play the Caps.

Now it's Caps-Flyers, Montreal-Boston, Pittsburgh-Ottawa and Devils-Rangers.

Posted by: Oneal | April 6, 2008 5:31 PM | Report abuse

It's no brainer for the Pens: the Senators, one of the worse team in the NHL after January, and w/o Alfredson nonetheless, or the Flyers.

I hope the refs will keep the Flyers honest - only in that case we have a chance. I don't agree with Ron, Biron is playing above average.

Posted by: mauree | April 6, 2008 5:32 PM | Report abuse

Well, Philly it is.

Doesn't matter who we got really - bring em on!

Posted by: Dave UK Caps Fan | April 6, 2008 5:32 PM | Report abuse

Well, it's Philly. The Pens didn't want to win the game. Looks to me like they threw it so they could play Ottawa.

This is going to be a very physical game. I hope our D-men are up to it!

Posted by: Greg S. | April 6, 2008 5:32 PM | Report abuse

we will beat philly - they can't handle the caps the way they are playing right now...

Posted by: 7734yeah | April 6, 2008 5:33 PM | Report abuse

Well, are you? :)

Posted by: keef | April 6, 2008 5:34 PM | Report abuse

One more VERY Important Point.

Malkin held without a point so, as of now Ovie owns both the Ross and the Richard!!

May as well make it a hat-trick and throw the Hart in as well!

Posted by: Dave UK Caps Fan | April 6, 2008 5:34 PM | Report abuse

Pens totally did not want to play the Fryers, worst piece of crap game I've seen all year. Biggest problem is all the drunken abnoxious Filthy Fans in the VC. Those a-holes are already cashing their welfare checks to buy tickets. They will bring their fat, ugly women and leave their children on the streets of their ugly city.

Posted by: Bob | April 6, 2008 5:36 PM | Report abuse

Huh ... not what I expected. Oh well, really does not matter - we're gonna win, regardless! :-D Tempted to travel, but a little concerned about the possibility of receiving an upper body injury from rabid Flyers fans ...

Posted by: Boo! | April 6, 2008 5:36 PM | Report abuse

Did anyone else get their tickets using FirstDibz? I have two for Games 1 and 2 but -- surprise! -- have to go out of town. They're non-transferrable tickets, so I can't have anyone other than myself pick them up on gameday.

Has anyone ever tried to pick up someone else's tickets at Will-Call (a friend, perhaps) with that other person's government-issued ID in-hand? Will the oh-so-kind VC Ticket Matrons care if the person holding my actual ID isn't actually me?

Posted by: Dinger | April 6, 2008 5:36 PM | Report abuse

plus, the flyers are about as bad as the maple leafs in taking dumbass penalites. we should CAPitalize on that...

Posted by: 7734yeah | April 6, 2008 5:37 PM | Report abuse

Biron has a 2.64 gaa before todays game, tied for 24th. I wouldn't call that above average.

Can't wait for game one.

Posted by: Steve R | April 6, 2008 5:42 PM | Report abuse

Flyers are the 2nd hottest eastern team, after the Caps. Biron has been as good as Huet. Lets face the facts and not lie to ourselves. Leave that to the Habs fans who think Guy should be coach of the year and the Pitt fans that think Cindy and Ugly are better than Ovechkin.
Caps have a tough series ahead of them. Its gonna be fun to watch, fun to cheer and fun to disappoint the city of Philadelphia.

I will be coming down for Game #2 (assuming it is Sunday), right before I board a plane for a family trip to Orlando. While there, I have purchased an online subscription to Center Ice so I can watch all games while away from my television. I wish I could be there for Game #1, but I am flying back from LA on business that day (assuming it is Thursday).

When we make it to Round #2, I will be coming down to all end of the week home games (I do have to pay the bills)

Let's go Caps!

Posted by: CT Caps Fan | April 6, 2008 5:49 PM | Report abuse

As much as I hate the Flyers, I will give them a bit of respect because at least they didn't tank the game like the Sissy-Penguins and the Sissy-Bruins.

That being said, the Caps are simply better than the Flyers, so bring 'em on.

Caps in 6.

@ by 007;

Get over the "hot" Flyers thingy! Please!

They have been .500 since March- nothing more! Their last games have been against disinterested teams who already knew their fate and rested veterans!

Biron as good as Huet. Gimmee a break!

Here are the true NHL stats!

Let's look at the stats for goalies who have played at least half the team's games.

As for Biron, he ranks 14th in the NHL concerning save percentage, and 24th concerning "Goals against average."

Now if we look at Huet, he ranks 5th in the NHL for save percentage and 10th for Goals against.

I'll take Huet any day of the week because success starts in the net!

Posted by: Ron C. | April 6, 2008 5:56 PM | Report abuse

I must say, if that is the best game the stinking flyers can put up with the Pens going through the motions, we should be abl to beat them.

Posted by: Bob | April 6, 2008 5:57 PM | Report abuse

@ Ron C.

Chill out. They're hot, thats what I'm saying. Their goalie is hot, the team is playing well and they have kept the pace, otherwise we would have passed them. Biron has been as good as Huet has FOR HIS TEAM. Thats whats important. I know the stats and I know what I've seen. Those guys can play and have done so down the stretch. They will be harder than the Sens. You don't give away the series without a game having been played.

Well, here it is for anybody who digs brackets.

Teams and rankings should be right. Have fun making predictions and following the playoffs!

Let's go Caps!

Posted by: Anonymous | April 6, 2008 6:30 PM | Report abuse

Unfortunately for the bracket-poster, the NHL re-seeds after the first round.

So if the Caps win, there is no possible way they could play Montreal in the 2nd round.

There are possible scenerios where they could play any of the other six teams in the 2nd round, though.

Posted by: Oneal | April 6, 2008 7:18 PM | Report abuse

and I thought maple Leaf fans were dumb... this is about the most mindless garbage ive ever read. I'm a flyers fan in philly and I will tell you first hand caps fans if you think this is going to be a cake walk you are dead wrong... we have 7 20+ goal scores... we have 3 number 1 lines and as far as team speed we are just as quick as the captials believe me. Not to mention Huet has about as much playoff expierence as Biron. This will be a tough series for both teams... but defence wins in the playoffs and from what i hear your teams pretty banged up... remember that
