Tonight's lineup: Caps at Senators

By Katie Carrera

The Capitals are set to try to snap their losing streak at eight games tonight in Ottawa. If they cannot, this skid would match the nine-game slide in 2006-07 as the worst slump since a 13-game losing streak in the 1981-82 season. Washington is 2-3-1 in the second of back-to-back games so far this season but as a few of the Capitals said after the 3-2 loss to the Bruins now is not the time for them to talk about doing better but to just do it.

Based on warm up here's what the lineup should look like:

Forwards
Ovechkin-Backstrom-Fehr
Laich-Perreault-Knuble
Chimera-Johansson-A.Gordon
Hendricks-Steckel-Bradley

Defense
Hannan-Green
Alzner-Carlson
Erskine-Poti

Goal
Neuvirth
Varlamov

Scratches: Jay Beagle and Alexander Semin.

Can't believe they scratched Beagle & King...wow! LOL! Hey, maybe Gonchar can keep show the rest of the Caps his Cup ring from his time with the Pens. Here we go....

Repost:

I was at the game last night, and I've never felt more embarrassed and ashamed to be wearing my Caps jersey. The play of the game, in my opinion, was just 1:30 in when there was a scrum down in our goal. From where I was sitting, looked like Alzner was doing his best to impersonate Johnny E. Just then, Lucic went after Steckel who just stood there meekly.

The fans went nuts, chanting "Looch" and it was clear which team was the alpha dog. Boston clearly fed off the fans reaction, and then they just dominated. After the timeout, I knew Bradley would find McQuaid and they fought in my corner. Damn I like McQuaid, and he just pummeled Brads. Bruins scored again (and they could've had a few more, too) and I thought my vision of "CapRuins" was coming true.

The only saving grace of that period was w/about a minute left, Erskine went after Lucic hard and challenged him to fight at length. All the B's fans sitting next to me acknowledged #4's meanness, and they were disappointed that Lucic didn't oblige. (They remembered #4's tko/breaking Lucic's nose a couple yrs ago. They were hoping Thornton and Erskine would fight later, AND THEY WERE ABSOLUTELY MIFFED WHY DJK WASN'T IN THE LINEUP).

Being in the arena, I can tell you that the game was over after the first. Steckel's cowardice contributed to the B's surge and first 2 goals; Bradley getting pounded did nothing to stop the onslaught. Perhaps Lucic's backing-down from Erskine gave the team a boost and made them feel a little bigger than they know they are.

Despite the B's being outplayed the 2nd and 3rd, I never got a sense that there was any doubt about the outcome of the game, on the ice or in the stands. Alzner's goal had the feeling of window-dressing and just making the last 5 minutes interesting. I guess it felt more like the Bruins lost interest and stopped playing than it did the Caps got pissed and dominated.

On a team w/Neil and Carkner, can we at least give DJK a chance tonight? If not, I hope #4 plays well and the streak continues.

what on earth did King ever do to BB to end up a permanent scratch? didnt gmgm and bb talk about getting him before they got him? sheesh

Posted by: ebolean1 | December 19, 2010 7:28 PM | Report abuse

Hey, lookit, AGordon showed good hustle last night. So did Beagle. If you want King in, take out Steckel.

Posted by: tominsocal1 | December 19, 2010 7:30 PM | Report abuse

Fehr on the top line? What a bad idea.

Posted by: LloydChristmas | December 19, 2010 7:30 PM | Report abuse

beagle and gordon showed hustle last night?? i havent noticed either of them in the three games they played

Posted by: _stevo | December 19, 2010 7:33 PM | Report abuse

If the key to the Caps winning is to have Erskine and DJ King in the lineup (as SOME seem to think), we are in worse shape than I thought.

Posted by: MadCap1 | December 19, 2010 7:34 PM | Report abuse

Has DJK been Nylandered? What is going on with BB? He should have been in last night's lineup.

Posted by: MReilly9 | December 19, 2010 7:36 PM | Report abuse

@tominsocal1

The only problem with that is that you Steckel plays center and King plays wing.

@LloydChristmas

Fehr played great with Ovie and Backstrom in the 3rd period. I think BB is giving him a shot to see if he can repeat that. If he can't repeat the same sort of intensity and play then I could see AGordon being given a shot in the 2nd half of the game at 1st line RW or 2nd line RW.

The absence of Semin hurts.

@vermontcaps

The Boston announcers and analysts, who were all in the building, greatly disagreed with your analysis of the 2nd and 3rd periods. They repeatedly said the Caps were outbattling and outworking the Bruins and that the Bruins were fortunate to escape with a win(with kudos being given to Tim Thomas for good play).

The guys with the big contracts need to earn their money tonight.

Posted by: zmega | December 19, 2010 7:40 PM | Report abuse

Ah, i didn't even notice he was on the first line last night. Whatever works I guess. I like the Ottawa stats that Joe B mentioned. Hopefully that will help too.

fehr working the goalie with his stick

Posted by: Capt_Kirk_in_AZ | December 19, 2010 7:40 PM | Report abuse

Maybe soon, someone will set the lines and keep them that way for a while. These guys have no prayer to develop chemistry with the lines changing all the time.

Yes, I know Semin is out, but the only line ever seemingly kept intact for any length is the 4th, and Steckel needs to man up or sit.

This is so frustrating to watch.

Posted by: sca187 | December 19, 2010 7:41 PM | Report abuse

I like Beagle in the lineup as he shows toughness, which the team needs from more players.

Posted by: MReilly9 | December 19, 2010 7:42 PM | Report abuse

Great to see Fehr on the 1st line. He has already had our best chance. Fehr has been playing well the last few games. One of the only players that has been playing both sides of the ice. GO CAPS

Posted by: Caps4Life1 | December 19, 2010 7:42 PM | Report abuse

WTF is Steckel thinking? Beyond stupid.

Posted by: tominsocal1 | December 19, 2010 7:44 PM | Report abuse

I didn't say it all the way before. Steckel is not playing an NHL game. I would have sat him a LONG time ago. Stupid penalty in the O zone...

Even though Neuvirth didn't do enough with it and had the giveaway, there was plenty of time for us to take space away from Ottawa, particularly in front of the net.

Didn't do it and gave up a shot from close in and Poti provided a screen to boot.

Fail.

sorry- i'm in a foul mood after the ref failed to call interference and then tripping in the sens end early in the period. at least he was consistent and didn't call the holding on the caps that the trailing ref picked up. i am so mad I could spit nails!

Posted by: ebolean1 | December 19, 2010 7:59 PM | Report abuse

Neuvirth has been one of the worst goalies statistically in the league for the December, if not the worse and he gets the start over Varlamov... hilarious.

Caps down 1-0 fast to another crappy team, what a joke. Let the landslide continue.

Wow, this is just horrible hockey.

We can't move the puck out of our own end, we aren't taking space away, esp. in front of the crease, and we can't execute through the neutral zone with any effectiveness.

This team is a complete joke. The fact that the organization refuses to make any changes is literally the definition of insanity. I dont care if bruce is jesus f*cking christ, you fire the man, the team is no longer responding to him, it is that simple.

I have never seen anything so infuriating in my life. What does GM see that the everyone else is missing?

Come on dude. It's pretty obvious that they're not going to come out and say what's wrong. I happen to love Locker and Joe B. has grown on me. They want to see this team win as bad as we do. I think you can see that.

I think we're seeing a combo of many things. The end of the period says nothing is going the Caps way. They need to step up and SHOW that they want it more than the other team. Bottom line. Never give up...

Posted by: sca187 | December 19, 2010 8:16 PM | Report abuse

Bad coaching.. perhaps. Watching 24/7, didn't see or hear any real coaching, just a bunch of semi-motivating gibberish that even the players didn't care for.

How about bad, useless players? Does the coach make his players play like complete and utter failures all over the ice?

At least they can score after time has expired... hey there's some positivity for ya.

Who hired him?

Who stuck with him?

Who built this roster?

Who has been in charge of this rebuild and overseen a single playoff series win by the slimmest of margins over the last 12+ years?

Posted by: tmac2yao | December 19, 2010 8:21 PM | Report abuse

I'm going to start defending BB. It's not him who has "lost" his players, its the players who have given up on him.

The ultimate form of cowardice and disgrace of a professional athlete when one gives up on a teammate/coach.

Not saying BB shouldn't be fired, but he will probably be the sacrifice... because of those sisy, heartless cowards that are doing the playing on the ice.

Posted by: BigGameSid | December 19, 2010 8:22 PM | Report abuse

I wonder if things would have been better if we still had Shoane Morrisson, Jurcina, Brendan Morrison, Belanger, Fleish, Theodore.

Steckel, B. Gordon, Chimera all stink.

Poti - looks like he is sleep walking

Bradley, I'm on the fence with him, but with Hendricks now, he's replaceable.

And Johansson - why is he even still on the team?

I thought Hannan was decent, every time there is a goal against he seems to be out there. Looks like we should have held out for Bieksa.

Oh yeah, I know Steckel is great in the circle and Gordon is good along the boards, Bradley can take a whooping to get his team fired up and Chimera has that great speed. Not playing King at this point to try to inject some life into this team is just stupid. Hopefully, we have seen the last of BB and playing his favorites each night with the same result.

Has Backstrom even been playing in the last few games? The guy is invisible.

Now that we're in the cap era and there is so much parity among teams, more than ever before, the single most important person in a hockey organization is the GM.

Everything the GM does trickles down to the on ice product over time.

People love to compare elite players across the league but even more significant is comparing GMs.

In this version of the NHL, having an elite GM is just as important as having elite players.

good breakdown by Locker on that goal by Chris Kelly. I was pretty happy with the coverage on that goal once they got the puck into our zone. Sometimes a goal like that can't really be prevented. They played it well defensively. The only gripe? Andrew Gordon, my boy, pulled up short inside the blueline when he could've engaged the forward and maybe gotten the puck away.

Any GM could have built a pretty good team with as many 1st round picks as McPhee had over the past decade.

Only a truly great GM could have then built the proper collection of role players and hired the right people to turn that good team into a great team.

btw, terribly casual play by Carlson on the first shift but eventually we get a goal out of it. But Carlson had a bead on the puck and the puck carrier but showed no defensive urgency to get there. If they hadn't flubbed the puck on the crossing pass we wouldnt have gotten the turnover.

god does Poti suck. Refuses to engage anyone on the end boards. Makes me sick to watch him play.

Now lets see if the Caps lay back after they score the go-ahead. That's been their pattern now for a while. Battle back, score the go ahead, relax.

Funny natre, you were pretty quiet to me for several weeks up until the Caps got an actual lead in the game for once... you must be so proud.

Good work by the Caps grunts, about time they showed up for work.

Tom - I'll give you the credit for the turn around. #1 Fehr is on the top line like you've said since the summer. #2 I haven't had Captain in at least a week so that coulda been the problem as well.

Doesn't it seem like this is the 1st time we've had a lead since ohhhhh 19.... 98?

thats about as distinct a kicking motion as you'll ever see

good news is the Caps are finally outplaying a team.

bad news is, its the Senators.

I'd still like to see some checks being finished by the Caps up by a goal. That's how you cement a win and a lead. You run em over when you got em on the run like we do. Lets not go revert to ticktack fancy hockey.

christ pls get Poti off the PK. Misses the easy clear the first time around behind the net, gave it right to a Senator fwd. Made the 2nd clear, which was painfully easy.

Posted by: cstanton1 | December 19, 2010 8:59 PM | Report abuse

poker/cap'n: I'm on record as saying Fehr is our #1 line RW the next ten years and he pots 300 goals in that time.

And that was assuming they put Ovi and Semin on two lines to "spread it around."

BTW, if we could move Poti and Steckel and take on Gonchar's contract (5.5 for two more years) would anyone do it?

Think hard...you could move Ovi back down low on PP.

ERskine just showed the rest of our D exactly how you engage a forward and jar the puck loose for the easy clear

such a simple play to make and Erskine consistently makes it.

Steckel is too slow of foot and hand to play the point on the PK. He can't change direction fat enough, recover fast enough or do enough with the puck quickly enough when it's near him.

No matter how good he is at faceoffs, he becomes a liability if the puck remains in our end.

Posted by: FloridaCapsFan | December 19, 2010 9:05 PM | Report abuse

Over time, I think it'll be revealed that Steckel is even more of a liability on the PK (beyond the faceoff) than he was in the past with our new higher pressure approach. He doesn't have the ability to make up the kind of ground you need to make up playing that style.

Fehr is lookin good for sure, someone else mentioned that. He's just vigilant around that crease tonight. And after runnin over the goalie he went right back to the crease, i half expected a fight to break out right there. He even absorbed a big hit by Foligno who went high on him with an elbow and it didn't faze him.

on a sidenote, i really miss the Ovechkin in his first 2 seasons. You'd get such a consistent hardhitting effort from him on a game by game basis. Now you'll either get 7 hits in a game or none. His physical game has just tanked.

Posted by: cstanton1 | December 19, 2010 9:15 PM | Report abuse

Except that Kovalev has far better puckhandling skills. Ovechkin is somewhere between a skilled grinder and a true top line wing when it comes to his puckhandling abilities.

As far as trying to do too much, which was your point, I agree though.

one things for sure, if the Caps win tonight no way does Mr King find his way back into the lineup anytime soon. Even if we play a team who dresses 3 goons.

Bruce never changes a winning lineup, esp not in a drought like this. Its superstition more than anything else. He could have 12 guys play well and 6 guys play badly, but those 6 guys will be back in the lineup after a win.

Got away with it. 8 with a failed clear on one end than an ill-advised shot at the other. He would've been better off holding onto the puck after that last face-off win until he felt pressure then dumped into the corner or something.

Great individual efforts at various times in this game by guys like Johansson, Knuble, Laich and Fehr.

I hope we keep Hannan around long enough to teach Alzner at least. And MaJo...he is NOT an NHL-ready offensive center but is NHL-ready as defensive center. He can be #3C and he is pretty good there especially if they leave him with Laich and Knuble.

OK, WHERE'S JONATHAN6?

It's been a goal-shaker, losing streak breaker two-point night!

Steckel was a passenger. I guess you should suspect something when he carries a piece of Samsonite luggage on the ice. Chimera was pretty much a passenger, but maybe I'm influenced by the dag-burned penalty. Brads didn't do much.

On D...even Poti was diving in the corner to move the puck near the end.

They really tried tonight. Ovi made some nice set-ups if anyone had paid attention. Backie at least did well on the PK as did Knuble, Laich and MaJo.

If I were coach he-he I'd tell Laich, MaJo and Knuble that they were my third (checking) line the rest of the year and I was going to depend on them. Not cuss at them once ever all year. I would just depend on them.

I also like AG in the line-up and I like Hendricks (oops, he was kind of a passenger tonight).

Somehow Steckel needs to be given a Greyhound ticket along with Sloan. Whatever Steckel can do, AG can do it better.

POSTGAME THOUGHTS:
@tominsocal1 LOLOLOLOLOL - nice work on the french wine tonight. You found the magic and the losing streak ended.

It's easy to say this now but even when Ottawa went up 2-0 I sat there feeling like these guys aren't going to do it again. Not after the way they fought back last night. What a way to respond in the second period and down the stretch. It didn't come easy.

Yes I've dogged Fehr and Laich and I'm not big fans of them but big big big props for their efforts tonight. If only they can get more consistent like that. Maybe this is a start - i don't know. Let's hope so.

GOALTENDING: Agree or disagree all you want but it is not the problem during this losing streak. Never has been. All this talk about a veteran netminder is crap. It's December. Give it another month or two to see where it's at to see if we do need a veteran or not. They've been fighting in there and Neuvy did a solid job the rest of the way tonight. How about giving him some props??

The question remains is that during this losing streak and on a cold Sunday night in Ottawa - did this team turn the corner and will it begin to head in the direction of something special. Alot of hockey left to go but we shall see.

Have a safe flight home guys. Way to end the streak.

It's been a - to quote tominsocal1 - a losing streak breaker two point night.
