Ovechkin Reps 'Coach's Corner' (Now With Photos)

Every game night around 5:30, Alex Ovechkin and several teammates kick a soccer ball around outside the dressing room as a way of loosening up. Tonight was no different.

Except Ovechkin wasn't wearing his usual red Caps underwear.

He was wearing a red "Coach's Corner" t-shirt and Hockey Night in Canada boxer shorts -- and a big smile. On the back of the t-shirt, someone had written the word "respect."

So you thought the Ovechkin-Don Cherry feud was over? Not so much.

*groan* I'm gearing up for Ovi showing up on Coaches Corner and taking Cherry in a headlock. Ahh, the days of old school WWF wrestling side shows. Go, Ovi! Go Caps!

someone should make t-shirts like that, kind of like crosby's diving school

Posted by: capsfan8 | March 24, 2009 6:13 PM | Report abuse

This may be really stupid but the "respect" on the back of his shirt... is that Ovie sending a message to Cherry telling him to respect him or is it Ovie reminding himself that he needs to respect Cherry? Confused.

LeftCoast: In response to your query in the previous thread, in the WAS-TOR season series, we have 4 points to Toronto's 2. So worst case scenario is a split in the season series. Any conclusion other than a regulation loss means yet another victorious season series.

Posted by: GregAnnapolis | March 24, 2009 6:18 PM | Report abuse

It's time for the Caps to get revenge for the last Toronto game.

And who did Ovi play soccer with this time? Normally, Semin is part of that group. If he was tonight, it's a good sign that he's back.

this would be a substitution - not an add on... yes you can have bacon instead of veggies - because pigs can grow in the ground (standing in mud and eating slop counts as such)

Posted by: mikebrady1 | March 24, 2009 6:25 PM | Report abuse

Can someone get Cherry a sportcoat made out of Caps jerseys or something? Seriously, I'm not so sure this so much of a feud between OV and Grapes. Cherry actually was fairly reasoned in his critique of OV, focusing on how it looks to the Lightening, rather than his frozen Canadian senses nonsense. OV likes the spotlight Canada gives him, and if he has to take a few light-hearted shots toward Cherry to get more air time, more power to him. Is there an Eastern motors in TO? If so, expect OV to be doing their ads too.

@Lee, Thanks for the contact info. I'm starting a search and that's a brand that's on my short list (you can guess the others). I'll probably give you a shout around tax time.

Posted by: jmu_capsgirl | March 24, 2009 6:33 PM | Report abuse

I don't think wearing a "Coach's Corner t-shirt was a slight on Grapes at all, I think it's just the opposite. Cherry called OV the best player in hockey on his last show and seemed to tone it down and actually said a bunch of nice things about him. OV is wearing the shirt to lighten up the mood and show that he isn't taking any of this seriously and has no hard feelings for Cherry. Am I the only one who sees it this way?

I would not be surprised if words similar to this came out of Don Cherry's mouth:

"Once again I'm left wondering what this guy is doing. Do you know what he's doing? Does he respect our show? Does he want our respect? Hell, is Aretha Franklin a closet Coaches Corner watcher?
I dunno. I think this kid needs to focus on getting his team ready for the playoffs"

Ovi needs to have the flu for the next two games. I think that will eliminate this distraction.

I'm having visions of a 2009-2010 pre-game discussion with BB or GMGM where they talk about how late season distractions led to a poor showing in the first round.

Cherry picker = if they leave you wide open for a breakaway you take it.

I know it's always a bad idea to stretch the D which would give you more room in the neutral zone to advance the puck every other time since they would worry about the home run pass.

Yeah...should never throw deep in the NFL either. Horrible ideas. I agree.

@Kirk

Sarah Palin was notorious for that...I think we all know why.

I was watching the Pens game the other day and Malkin was the high guy forechecking...mysteriously he was the 5th guy back on defense too. I wouldn't have expected that when he was the guy furthest up the ice but I'll be darned that's what happened.

Posted by: Davethecapsfan | March 24, 2009 7:33 PM | Report abuse

Posted by: ralCapsFan | March 24, 2009 7:33 PM | Report abuse

Wow refs have our back tonight...Ovechkin just cleanly shouldered a guy right in his chest into the boards. Usually this is what many fans call "head hunting" when Alex does it. Obviously the chest and head aren't exactly in the same spot, but this normally isn't a concern for certain fans trying to advance their criticism.

Posted by: richmondphil | March 24, 2009 7:42 PM | Report abuse

@phil

There's a difference between calling a clean hit dirty and acknowledging a dirty hit. There is also "intent" to think about. Like the hit Malkin took a lot of heat for recently I thought that was more coincidence than intent. Many hits in the league get scrutinized now that are merely cases of a guy with his head down, ducking his head, or turning at the last moment so at the point of impact it appears to be from behind.

I'd argue Ovechkin will target guys to throw hits, but he intends to be clean and hard about it.

There are times I think he should get called for leaving his feet, there are also a lot of times I thought he left his feet and I'll rewind it and see both guys (him and the guy he hits) lift off the ice after the collision.

Honestly they miss a lot of guys coming off their feet, so as long as they call it even I won't complain either way.

Why wasn't that waived off for incidental goaltender interference? Theo was totally bumped off the post on that goal by the TOR screener.

Please answer (you won't cause you're a loser) this: What exactly is your reason that you come here and cheer against the Caps every night? It's immature but I guess that's what you like to do. I find people like you so wrong. I don't get why you waste your time doing what you do.

thats just par for the course actually. Caps offense is usually overfancy and their D is usually very nice to the other team in front of our net. Thats just caps hockey unfortunately and why they'll learn a rude lesson in the playoffs since they insist on not changing their style.

All credit to Backstrom for still being able to get into the zone with them stacking all 4 on the line, great through pass and you know the rest.

Mad? That is what is known as "amused". How dare he be excited at doing something only Gretzky and Bossy had done. #66 didn't bury that one...2 more goals now I think to pass Super Mario's goal total for first 4 seasons!

Listen to the roar and the numbers of fans jump up for Ovie's goal. Haven't heard much booing either but that would also require them to make noise. If you added the home team's goal horn I think the loudest the building could have been all night would be after Ovie's goal.

SC1907: Why is every post something negative about the Caps????? If you don't like them, don't watch them and stop coming here. If we were sitting around a table, by now you would have been thrown across the room and out the door. You'd be crying in the front yard waiting for your mom to pick you up. That is the worst thing about technology is geeks like you sit in your dark little places and say things you'd never say in person. Why do you like being hated?

About the game: Nice goal by OV, nice pass by Backy. I have to say something to all of you Nyls haters...his line is creating in the offensive zone. They have been the most effective line in the O zone. I have a feeling they're going to be the line that buries the game winner.

Too many people attribute Backstrom's numbers to just playing with Ovie. Back's game is only getting better and better. A couple weeks back I posted his numbers when compared to Marc Savard's and Joe Thorton's this year. Virtually identical.

It's all Richard Peddie's fault.

A lot of the people at Leafs games in the lower sections are refferd to as "suits", while the loud fans sit in the upper section. In past games at the ACC I wanted to yell at the lower level by saying "SELL SELL SELL!" and see if anyone looks up and starts writing it down.

Should have been unsportsmanlike conduct on Gerber. And the hit on Semin in overtime was a penalty that wasn't called too. Unbeleivable officiating lately. Obviously the league officials don't like the Caps.

Having said that, Semin needs to be benched. He is playing really lazy. At the end of regulation he didn't have any ida how much time was left when he could have tried to put the puck on net. Then he makes that terrible lazy pass attempt on a breakaway!

Very uninspired hockey. I thought all teams "got up" for the games in Toronto? I think there is room for some "concern". BB has been pointing this out for weeks and it's not solved. Friday will be interesting. Maybe this schedule being so light for the last 3 weeks or so of the season aren't a good thing after all.

Posted by: pokerface1208 | March 24, 2009 10:01 PM | Report abuse

One point in away game is OK. If it was PO, Caps would win it probably, Toronto did not attack in OT and got their asses saved by a hot and fresh goalie. Caps came back in 30 ticks till the end with an empty net to get one point by scoring 2nd. Overall a good performance by the team. Theodore is pretty good on SO, he saves like 2 out of 3 all the time :)

bro most fans i know weren't excited about getting nyles here in the 1st place so you didn't tell "us" anything. Getting Nyles here was a bonehead move as far as I'm concerned and bringing him back here this season was even a dumber move. They should've taken anything (i.e 5th rounder) this past offseason just to dump him. There is not a single NHL player currently playing who is physically weaker on the ice than Nylander, he doesn't cover his man defensively, and he won't go within 6 feet of the net unless he's getting knocked into it. Hate the guy and again, you didn't clue us into anything most of my friends and I didn't already know.

Posted by: cstanton1 | March 24, 2009 10:11 PM | Report abuse

Yes, StanleyCup1907, I've been trying to ignore you all night. And, for the most part I have refrained from responding, but...... I'd like to see what you'd do against an NHL team, even Toronto, when you're coming back from a viral infection. Not to mention, having some leg injury that was causing you to limp. Which is the case of a certain individual who you are so intent on dumping on and wanting to send to the minors.

Posted by: CapsFan75 | March 24, 2009 10:11 PM | Report abuse

What's not respectful about coming on to a professional teams blog and talking trash to everybody? I mean isn't that the cool thing to do these days? What's not insightful and knowledgable about "The Caps will never win a Cup"? Sheer brilliance if you ask me.

Posted by: pokerface1208 | March 24, 2009 10:12 PM | Report abuse

Just looking at the way we're closing the season out and watching some of the other teams who have stepped it up over the past month I'd say the Caps are probably 6th best out of the 8 current playoff seeds. That's my honest observation. I actually think we can beat the Devils in a series and probably also beat Montreal who is the weakest of the top 8 teams in the East. We'll probably lose to the other 5 teams in a series.

Posted by: cstanton1 | March 24, 2009 10:14 PM | Report abuse

Playing like this,I don't think you'd get much of an argument from anybody. Let's just hope that we can flip that switch once the playoffs start and play to our capabilities instead of very slow uninspired hockey. I'd like to think we'll be fine once the competition heats up.

Posted by: pokerface1208 | March 24, 2009 10:17 PM | Report abuse

Caps have bad record against teams that are not in PO (Toronto) and good record against teams that are in PO.

Too many passengers again..When do they finally scratch Fleischman, 2 goals in 30 games, he's making Bradley look like a sniper, and he's soft as a box of tissues.
Not that it's his fault, but Schult plays 20 minutes, and has 1 hit, no other shots on goal, no blocked shots, nothing....I know Erskine took a penalty at the end, but he at least had 7 hits.

Posted by: topshelf | March 24, 2009 10:25 PM | Report abuse

So Don Cherry is still an issue... is he even relevant. In his second rant about Ovie he talked about how the Caps were winning 5-1 when he did that... uh, Don, it was the first goal of the game.

Also Don, how about pointing out that when Ovie scored he was going into the zone alone against *three* Tampa defenders. He scored on a 1-on-3...sheesh.

At least he admitted that Ovie is the best player in the world today. For him to admit that a player from Europe (especially from Russia) is the best player... wow.
