Ovechkin: 'I'm okay'

Alex Ovechkin just spoke to reporters between periods and said his foot injury is not serious and that he hopes to be ready for Sunday's game against the Penguins.

"We want to take it easy and make it's going to be okay," Ovechkin said, standing rather comfortably. "Me and [head trainer Greg Smith] tried some things this morning but it didn't work. We decided to see what's going to happen the next couple of days."

Asked if he's going to be able to face the Penguins, he said: "We're going to see. Probably."

Ovechkin was walking without a limp and said he will decide tomorrow morning whether or not to attempt to practice.

"There's no swelling, but it hurts," Ovechkin added. "I've iced it a couple of times and it's going to be okay tomorrow or the day after tomorrow. It happens. You can't play 1,000 games without injury, without something."

As for skating in front of the net during drills on Wednesday, Ovechkin said it's a lesson learned: "I don't know what I was thinking. It was just an accident. It just happens."

Ovechkin joked that he might have been in the lineup if this were a playoff game instead of a regular season meeting with 13th-place Maple Leafs.

"It doesn't matter what [happened]," he said smiling. "If I broke my leg I'm probably going to play in a playoff game."

Erskine showed a little too much grit there. Fortunately in the playoffs that will be legal defense against Ovie.

mauree, imagine that... and people say theo sucks.

Posted by: rachel216 | March 5, 2009 8:26 PM | Report abuse

Okay, I missed the first part of the game, but was there a fight? There seems to be a smear of red on the ice.

Posted by: jmu_capsgirl | March 5, 2009 8:26 PM | Report abuse

this is why i thought we should've tried to get his brother after he didnt make the NHL team in Jersey. If anyone can whip him into NHL shape, it would be his brother.

He failed to report to Lowell (the AHL team), and signed with a KHL team. lol.

no fight, puck off dome.

Posted by: richmondphil | March 5, 2009 8:27 PM | Report abuse

Posted by: jmu_capsgirl | March 5, 2009 8:35 PM | Report abuse

Yeah Theo looks horrible tonight. If he plays like this we won't go far into the playoffs.

Posted by: Davethecapsfan | March 5, 2009 8:35 PM | Report abuse

dawes and upshall making it work, haha.

Posted by: richmondphil | March 5, 2009 8:36 PM | Report abuse

Way to go sending Kronwall to AHL! Now Poti is injured after 7 seconds and Feds plays D.

Posted by: Hazz | March 5, 2009 8:38 PM | Report abuse

Dave,
Did you see Theo take a drink of water? What bad form... no chance he will take us to at least the 2nd round of the playoffs... no chance.

Posted by: jmu_capsgirl | March 5, 2009 8:40 PM | Report abuse

Well, Gerber is playing even better than Theo. Not sayin' anything though.

We need to score, I think the final will be 1-0, hopefully 1-0 us.

LOL @_828

Posted by: Thomas32 | March 5, 2009 8:41 PM | Report abuse

Without Ovechkin this team can't muster a thing on O.

Guarantee that teams will run Ovie in the playoffs much like Dale Hunter did on Turgeon

Posted by: gtydings | March 5, 2009 8:42 PM | Report abuse

This game is way too close to be against a depleted Leafs team.

Posted by: mauree | March 5, 2009 8:42 PM | Report abuse

I agree with Rachel. The final will probably be 1-0. Neither team has any offense to speak of.

Posted by: CapsFan75 | March 5, 2009 8:45 PM | Report abuse

they've had tons of good scoring chances, just no one could bury it.

Posted by: richmondphil | March 5, 2009 8:45 PM | Report abuse

gtydings, I completely agree... Alex is so fragile.

Posted by: _828 | March 5, 2009 8:45 PM | Report abuse

mauree, the leafs have been playing good hockey - 4-0-3 in last 7. My friend (a pens fan) says the leafs are legit... haha, cause they can't beat them! But, it will be alright. We are down 2 players tonight (Poti and Ovechkin) so, players are playing more than usual. Semin, Fehr, and Jurcina score for the Caps in the 3rd!!!

Posted by: _828 | March 5, 2009 8:47 PM | Report abuse

The Leafs are coach-killers. I believe Renney & Therrien got canned the day after a game with them.

Posted by: jmu_capsgirl | March 5, 2009 8:49 PM | Report abuse

leafs aren't that bad. we've had the chances, just no finish or follow up.

Posted by: richmondphil | March 5, 2009 8:49 PM | Report abuse

@jmu

Yep. it's kind of funny.

Posted by: richmondphil | March 5, 2009 8:50 PM | Report abuse

Dunno I think broken sticks have stopped more surefire opportunities than Gerber. He's made good stops but a lot are perimeter stuff nothing sparkling to be sure. Obviously Theo has only had a couple of 8 year olds flinging pucks at him from our blueline for it to be 0-0 still.

If we had dealt for more grit like Philly did we could be losing big too. I'm disappointed.

Posted by: Davethecapsfan | March 5, 2009 8:50 PM | Report abuse

Locker is so pissed. calm down dude.

Posted by: richmondphil | March 5, 2009 8:51 PM | Report abuse

gotta lift the puck guys....

Posted by: richmondphil | March 5, 2009 8:52 PM | Report abuse

Steckel and Fehr with another scoring opportunity. They won't start hitting the back of the net until they increase their grit.

Posted by: Davethecapsfan | March 5, 2009 8:52 PM | Report abuse

Aw!

Posted by: jmu_capsgirl | March 5, 2009 8:52 PM | Report abuse

Steckel's play at the end of the second was horsesh*t

Posted by: gtydings | March 5, 2009 8:52 PM | Report abuse

Steckel only scores against Tampa... I don't get my hopes up for him unless we are playing them.

Posted by: _828 | March 5, 2009 8:53 PM | Report abuse

Dave, You can buy that at Home Depot, right?

ARGH!!!

Posted by: jmu_capsgirl | March 5, 2009 8:53 PM | Report abuse

Posted by: _828 | March 5, 2009 8:55 PM | Report abuse

Posted by: tess2201 | March 5, 2009 8:55 PM | Report abuse

come on semin, what the heck?

Posted by: jogabonito | March 5, 2009 8:55 PM | Report abuse

ugh. a little faking by that guy.

Posted by: rachel216 | March 5, 2009 8:55 PM | Report abuse

Guys should carry little razors like wrestlers used to in order to blade themselves for double minors.

If they had grit they would do it.

Posted by: Davethecapsfan | March 5, 2009 8:55 PM | Report abuse

We're just missing opportunities again. We're getting chances but we can't cash in. Come on Caps!

Posted by: rachel216 | March 5, 2009 8:56 PM | Report abuse

Semin scores so many goals but he commits just as many dumb penalties

Posted by: capsfan5252 | March 5, 2009 8:56 PM | Report abuse

Dave, That thought crossed my mind when he kept grabbing his face.

Posted by: jmu_capsgirl | March 5, 2009 8:56 PM | Report abuse

And they are out: The anti-semin

Posted by: opita1 | March 5, 2009 8:57 PM | Report abuse

Is it just me, or does Brooks pick the most crowded space on the ice and try to skate through it with the puck? He's like, "Oooh, look! Five Leafs! I'll skate through there!"

Posted by: jmu_capsgirl | March 5, 2009 8:58 PM | Report abuse

is that like the anti-christ?

Posted by: richmondphil | March 5, 2009 8:58 PM | Report abuse

Oh, Theo...

Posted by: fnralch | March 5, 2009 8:59 PM | Report abuse

Posted by: rachel216 | March 5, 2009 8:59 PM | Report abuse

Shut up Opita1....im not anti-semin. im just pointing out a fact....how many times are we on power plays and Semin draws a dumb penalty

Posted by: capsfan5252 | March 5, 2009 8:59 PM | Report abuse

lol jmu. he just likes a challenge

Posted by: opita1 | March 5, 2009 9:00 PM | Report abuse

Gerber is old.

Posted by: richmondphil | March 5, 2009 9:00 PM | Report abuse

Wow, Gerber: 30/30. Why do all these average/backup goalies play so well against us?

Posted by: rachel216 | March 5, 2009 9:01 PM | Report abuse

christ would be semin, duh.

Posted by: richmondphil | March 5, 2009 9:01 PM | Report abuse

how many times are we on power plays and Semin draws a dumb penalty?

No as many as your whinning

Posted by: opita1 | March 5, 2009 9:01 PM | Report abuse

In addtion to his penalties, I've never been comfortable with his last name. Semin. But I heard it's Chara's drink of choice

Posted by: gtydings | March 5, 2009 9:01 PM | Report abuse

As much as I love Semin and he is part of my name... I wouldn't be talking too much about other players with Green in yours... ~ just sayin.

Posted by: _828 | March 5, 2009 9:01 PM | Report abuse

Turnover! yuck

Posted by: rachel216 | March 5, 2009 9:02 PM | Report abuse

Nyls cant get his body in front of that?

Posted by: _828 | March 5, 2009 9:02 PM | Report abuse

ugghhh

Posted by: jogabonito | March 5, 2009 9:02 PM | Report abuse

Richmondphil
Then you have answered your question, haven't you?

Posted by: opita1 | March 5, 2009 9:02 PM | Report abuse

Well I could have predicted Nylander would be on the ice when they scored. Need more grit.

Posted by: Davethecapsfan | March 5, 2009 9:02 PM | Report abuse

I'm gonna be so angry if we lose 1-0. Why is Gerber so good today?

Posted by: rachel216 | March 5, 2009 9:03 PM | Report abuse

Im not gonna argue with you Opita because your prolly some fat loser living in your parents basement so enjoy your pathetic life

Tarik - please ask Boudreau point blank why Erskine/Schultz continues to be a defensive pairing.

They are absolutely killing this team and ruining the efforts of the other skaters on the team.

It's painfully obvious and the question needs to be asked.

All right, I'm with jmu - there's still time. Let's go boys.

Posted by: mauree | March 5, 2009 9:12 PM | Report abuse

This team crested a month ago, and as teams get more physical on the playoff run, the Caps fold. This team was built for December, but needed some tough guys for a RUN to the Cup. Too many pussi*s

Posted by: gtydings | March 5, 2009 9:12 PM | Report abuse

Ouch well I have to admit the preparation coming into this game was plain dumb. Ovechkin is understandable but to put Poti on the bench and waste a roster spot when Alzner could've been up and playing tonight - S T U P I D.

Now this team forgets how to score and makes Martin Gerber look like a Vezina trophy winner. This is ridiculous. Boston and Philly losing and NJ idle and this team is pissing away two points. job well done. Not hitting the panic button just yet but each game now is getting closer. Sure it's a slump but don't tell me this whole team just stops scoring. Still some time left.

UP ALONG THE COAST of the Lake Of The Woods in northwestern Ontario lies the port town of Kenora, home of the 1907 Stanley Cup Champion Kenora Thistles.

The Thistles were very much a product of their times. Before there was a united professional league, amateur senior leagues reigned supreme in both popularity and talent. Any town with a few good skaters could form a squad and try their luck against other nearby towns.

Kenora (or Rat Portage as it was known until 1905) was one of just many Canadian midwestern boom towns that, after a hardworking summer season, felt the desire for an off-season past-time. That past-time was ice hockey, played on many of the thousands of frozen lakes that speckled the Canadian winter countryside.

Within a few years, the Thistles had assembled an awesome roster, boasting some of the greatest players of the game. Though their Stanley Cup stewardship was short, only two months, the Kenora Thistles' influence remaines undiminished, indelibly imprinted upon the formative pages of the National Hockey League. To this day their story remains an inextinguishable source of simple, old-time hockey idealism in this modern age of corporate-sponsored marketing, cynicism and greed.

And now, without any further ado, here are your 1907 Stanley Cup Champions, the Kenora Thistles!!!

Posted by: _828 | March 5, 2009 9:18 PM | Report abuse

Gerber does something Jose can't do, single-handily steal a game for his team... NEW team at that. Not good, people... this would be 3 straight losses to teams below us. If we keep playing like this we'll be in eighth place. Is it me or do they just lack the passion they once had? They don't seem enthused the last three games.

Am I the only one who thinks the problem with tonights game has been the line combos? I haven't seen any cohesion among the linemates, not a single team play, it seems as if everyone is doing its own thing.

I think it would be an upgrade to replace Schultz with Jason Doig.

Rachel, There is a reason the Leafs got Gerber off waivers. And its the exact reason he's been so solid tonight. He sucks. Actually, let me rephrase that. Gerber is great at getting a team to the playoffs before choking and getting his job taken away from him. He's got a new team and something to prove to the hockey world.

Posted by: bigschu8 | March 5, 2009 9:30 PM | Report abuse

Why can't Theo give us a game like Gerber gave his team. He faced even tougher shots than Theo and still... I'm sick of goalies outplaying our goalie every night!

Too many pussi*es on this team

Posted by: gtydings | March 5, 2009 9:30 PM | Report abuse

*sigh*

tonight's problems were the usual problems:

1) nobody in front of the net. Makes Gerber look like supergoalie
2) shaky defense, responsible for both goals (not Theo).

Also, somebody has to be held accountable for letting Poti in the line-up.

Posted by: mauree | March 5, 2009 9:31 PM | Report abuse

The sad thing is... had we been winning while Boston has been losing... we would be alright. But, it happens. Again, would rather have this happening now, than in mid April.

Even more stupid to let Pothier try to return to hockey

Posted by: Hazz | March 5, 2009 9:38 PM | Report abuse

another crappy game.

I finally started having confidence in theo in the second half of the season but in the past two games I've changed my mind. He's back to giving up juicy rebounds and flopping on the ice. Its also not helping that the defense are just standing around and not cleaning up the rebounds. Which leads to my next point...

Why in the world is Jeff Schultz in the NHL. Send him down to Hershey and bring up Alzner or Collins asap until Pothier gets into game-playing shape.

And I really think it's sad that the caps power play completely sucks without ovechkin. According to the coaching staff they have a lot of depth. Obviously they're wrong. Ovechkin cant be the only leader out there. Yes he is the best player in the NHL but one player doesn't make a team. The other players need to step up.

My big question tonight is Did Poti really think he was ready? If so, then stuff happens. If he was pretty sure, then he should be "put on LTIR" (benched). You do not help your team if you play 7 seconds and then force a pretty important Center to have to cover your tush. Not to mention to make that kind of decision when your team really needs a win.

What is going on with Flash? Seriously. Ever since he got sick he has not been sick anymore. Is pnuemonia (I know it is spelled wrong) an illness that affects time? Because I am seeing 2007 - 2008 Flash.

Posted by: ILikeLaich | March 5, 2009 9:52 PM | Report abuse

This is not a shot at any new cap fans, but i think its just long-term cap fans have learned to expect nothing, appreciate anything. After years of failure, we have low expectations so when our team HAS THEIR QUICKEST RUN TO 40 WINS EVER, we are going to be happy for them.
As i said, anyone who honestly expected a Cup this year even before the first game was played is an idiot.

you know, maybe we are wrong and we should be mad. who knows. hockey is cool. Its fun and awesome and stuff.

Posted by: richmondphil | March 5, 2009 9:53 PM | Report abuse

This team was due to lose 3 in a row like this at some point. Tonight was a much better game overall than the last 2, that's for sure. Obviously you don't want to drop 3 in a row, but this will end up being GOOD for this team come playoff time. Being humbled is sometimes just what you need to get you hungry again...and the last 3 games and especially tonight are just showing how hungry Semin is. Tonight was a big game for his development as a leader on this team outside of just putting up points.

It's good for a team to go through slumps sometimes.

So we've got Pens after the 4:1 win in Florida. BB has two days to cook something up if Ovi's not coming back...

Posted by: fnralch | March 5, 2009 10:08 PM | Report abuse

The one thing I've grown to respect about bb has been his candor and honesty. That was, until he spun a web of complete CRAP following this latest debacle. Instead of admitting that they played with no desire and passion, he chose to praise Toronto's goalie. Instead of citing his team's continued lack of urgency in their play, hechose to claim they were, "Still in it" until the very end. BULL CRAP!
Sometimes a game's score is not indicitive of the imbalance in play between the two teams. Tonight was such an instance. Despite the score, Toronto's players ALWAYS retrieved the loose pucks, for example. It was obvious ( To me at least ) from the opening face - off, who was hungrier. And, it wasn't Washington.
I don'twant to hear about Ov not playing. Poti either. Recently, they've been losing quite regularly with them IN the line up.
Basically, it all comes down to how bad do you want it. How willing are you to do whatever is necessary to win. How "Hungry" are you. The Caps are not a hungry team. On the contrary. They appear to be very, very COMPLACENT. And, that's George McPhee's fault! I continue this theme tomorrow.

Posted by: Puckguru | March 5, 2009 10:13 PM | Report abuse

It was Schultz's fault on the first goal, wasn't it? What are we gonna do with this guy???

I agree that every team slumps, but I also don't buy the "don't worry; we're fine" argument. We've lost at home to Colorado, Florida, Carolina, and now TO... and tonight's was the only game of the four where we competed.

Jose looked like a fish out of water on the 1st goal. And in the playoffs, that one bad goal and you lose the game.

We also missed a chance to get better yesterday.

Come on guys... you've been doing it all season. Pick it up.

i remember how amazing it was the first year they actually made the playoffs - back when an 80 games season eliminated 5 of the 21 teams. i did not expect them to get the cup this year - but will watch/follow until their last game every season. i can't wait for the day when that last game is a win

Hey everybody! What happened to this dynamic, exciting, inventive, power house of a team we all love? I swear I started watching half-way through the game and I couldn't recognize them. This team looked apathetic, sluggish and clumsy.

Not only did the defense stink, but so did the offense. Their shots were not convincing--sort of like taking them out of a sense of duty. Passes did not connect and the number of turnovers was unbelievable. And I bet Ovie would not have made a difference if he played the way he did last time.

Theo was great in the first half and pretty good the rest of the time.

Rachel

I agree with you however about Gerber doing something for his team that Theo cannot do, which is "steal a game." This is exactly what I thought was missing in the goalie situation.

I hope they did not peak in December as someone said. It will be interesting to see what will re-energize them and put them back on track.

I am only happy for Gerber's sake. Since he was sidelined by Ward when Carolina won the Cup, his career has gone from bad to worst. It would be nice if he had a come back.

i think they like the underdog roll for the playoffs - like last year. this is their push to get the 8th seed and then it's peddle to the medal

Look who scored for the Flames. Jokinen twice and Leopold once. *shakes head*

It's bad enough we have Schultz, he is downright HORRIBLE, but to pair him with Erskine is a recipe for disaster. They are the two slowest guys in the league, they make Jurcina look like he skates as fast as Paul Coffey...At least Erskine, will check and make guys pay a price...I'm tired of seeing Schultz get beat one on one in the corners by guys 8 inches smaller than he is. I can't believe he's in the NHL. Bring back Yvon Labre.

Posted by: topshelf | March 5, 2009 10:29 PM | Report abuse

It was Schultz's fault on the first goal, wasn't it? What are we gonna do with this guy???

Posted by: Andoy | March 5, 2009 10:14 PM

Don't complain too much or you'll incur the wrath of newbie fans like 828 who get all their hockey knowledge from the impressive blogs of idiots like Randinno.

Schultz was awful again. Period. And he has no business being in the lineup. Its the fact that he was a recent #1 McPhee pick that keeps him in here regardless of his play.

And to defend Flash, he at least works his butt off even if he can't finish. Thats more than I can say for half this team. And the excuse Tarik tried to provide that this team was stressed out leading upto the deadline really doesn't gel does it

puck"guru", thanks for stopping by after the three game losing streak. we missed you when the caps were winning 9 of 10, etc. i look forward to your nonsensical, self-important, semi-capitalized, bottom feeding rant tomorrow.

The preview of our game tonight is sort of humorous. Just glad the prediction didn't come true.

Welcome back Crapitals, I missed you

Kwiatkowski, Rohloff, Whitfield, Doig all heroes compared to

Jurcina, Erskine, Fleischman, and Bradley

Schultz doesn't
make the team, he's a disgrace

Posted by: gtydings | March 5, 2009 10:36 PM | Report abuse

cstanton1... the funny thing is - all the complaining you do means absolutely nothing. there is nothing you can do about it. So, I realize that and I support my team. That is the difference.

And the excuse Tarik tried to provide that this team was stressed out leading upto the deadline really doesn't gel does it

That sums it up about you... Mr. Negativity

Never said these guys are the best - I just have to deal with what I got and continue to support them. I can complain all day about them and where does that take me?
Again, I choose to root for these 'young' guys instead of looking like an idiot for criticizing them.

Sure glad we waved the white flag by not signing anyone at the trading deadline...at least we might win a Calder Cup (please sense the sarcasm)

Watch the breakaway when Grabovski goes in clean. It wasn't a goal or Schultz would end up as a -3 tonight but that was a lousy defensive play by Schultz who once again is unable to gather up the puck at the blueline. He fell over and lets the puck squirt through for a clean breakaway.

At least Erskine hits hard, is tough and can fight... I was really looking forward to Nyls having a monster game just to prove that he does belong in this team and is worth all that money. sigh.... I think he was the closest to the leafs guy who scored the first goal...

Posted by: Andoy | March 5, 2009 10:46 PM | Report abuse

I thought they were using Schultz as trade bait: kept playing him, big guy, +17, low salary, looks very good on paper. I don't get why he's getting so many minutes - or any minutes at all. Kronwall, Lepisto, Sloan, Collins, Alzner. All are better imho.

Well... let's hope for a huge win Sunday, that will make my day and wash down this bitterness.

It's really obnoxious to read the comments on here, to wade through the BS to get to the quality things.

Mauree, JMU, 828, and Boo (and there may be others I missed): Thanks for posting quality insight. That's why I read the comments on this blog.

Everyone else: Check the whining at the door. No one wants to hear your negative crap.

That said, great effort by Semin tonight. I'm glad someone on the team showed up to play. Although overall, they looked more energetic than Tuesday night...

Flash must have screwed up 6 scoring chances tonight!

But wow! Did you see how Nylander stepped it up??? Can you believe that guy? I mean he obviously does not want to spend time in the press box, what a pro!!!! My goodness if they had any finish in them he must have set up another 4/5 goals! Of course the Leafs players were not expecting him to set them up, maybe thats why they had a problem with the finish!

ShariLeigh131, Really? I post quality. Hmmmm. I just try to bring some relief from the Debbie Downers. Its starting to be about as easy as skating in mud.

Has anyone been to a game at RBC Center in Raleigh? Thinking about going to see them play the Rags over spring break and was wondering about the experience.

Posted by: jmu_capsgirl | March 5, 2009 11:05 PM | Report abuse

Everyone needs to calm down. The Sharks and Bruins are also in a funk. Its an 82 game season. Much of the caps success is due to the instensity they play with. That intensity masks a lot of the defensive problems, and lets the skilled guys do their thing.

The intensity has been absent the last few games. Its better to hit this skid now. This Sunday, win or loose, they should go back to playing inspired hockey, which will get them back to their winning ways.

My prediction for Sunday- Ovi comes back, lays some big hits, gets everyone pumped up, and the Caps win 4-3 in regulation. Even if they loose though, we should see our familiar caps- skate, hit, shoot, and repeat.

It's as if Nyls doesn't try anymore. I'm tired of people saying this guy earns his paycheck, he's a pro's pro, blah, blah, blah. He is not stepping up at all. Is that so hard to ask? Semin has stepped up the past few games. He's the only guy that showed up tonight. He's the only guy who deserves a day off tomorrow. Everyone else should be skated hard by BB.

Capt_Kirk, *sigh* I've looked! I just can't find anything that matches.
And my folks live an hour(ish) from Raleigh, so its not that much time. And its bonding time with my big bro. What better way to celebrate being siblings than to watch one Staal brother check another Staal brother into the boards--its like our childhood, played out on the ice!

I would rather be having a slump in early March than early April.

I don't think a three game home losing streak isnt all that bad of a thing at this time of the year. I will definetly get everyone a little more focused for the strech run. There is soooo much parity in the league you have to bring yor "A" game every night.
