Ovechkin injures foot (updated)

Alex Ovechkin just left practice after taking a slap shot off of his right foot. He went to the bench in obvious pain, removed his skate and then was helped to the dressing room by a trainer.

Update:A team spokesman just told reporters that the injury is not believed to be serious. But judging from Ovechkin's reaction -- he smashed a stick or two on the way to the dressing room -- this bears still watching.

We need Morris and a goalie. Neuvirth as a back up is not gonna cut it. We need a veteran or atleast someone with some kind of experience. I am not happy with going into the 2nd round of the playoffs. We are few pieces away from a Stanley Cup team. I like what Locker said about our team last nite. One or two aquisiitons and we are similar to the Hurricanes team that one it all a few years back.

GMGM to NSA

Posted by: Capt_Kirk_in_AZ | March 4, 2009 12:32 PM | Report abuse

Amongst players who have played in at least 12 games this season, and who have recorded at least 1 point, Alexander Semin is, BY FAR, the most productive player who has played in at least 12 games in the entire NHL.

ESPN keeps track of a stat called PROD. This is the average number of minutes of time on the ice per point scored. So, unless you're at 0:00, the idea here is the less PROD you have, the less time elapses between each point you get, and hence the more productive you are.

Alexander Semin's PROD is at the top of the list and is currently 14:19. That is 8.50% better than the next most productive player Parise, 8.85% better than the third-most productive player Datsyuk, and 10.59% better than the fourth-most productive player and current points leader Malkin. Semin's productivity is 21.30% better than 9th place Ovechkin.

Just for fun, I took a look at the top 50 players in terms of total points at even strength only, and divided their numbers by total time on ice at even strength. Again, the player at the top of the list is Alexander Semin, who has 4.16% more even strength points per even strength minute than second-place Malkin, 14.15% better than third-place Parise, and 26.98% better than 13th-place Ovechkin.

And Semin is +27, which is 8th in the NHL, but if you take the top 25 in +/-, and break it down per game, Semin is #1 on that list too, and, again, no one else is even close. Semin is 6.39% better than 2nd place Duncan Keith and 13.83% better than 3rd place David Krejci in the +/- stat when broken down per game.

Yet Semin will get 0 votes for the Hart Trophy.

Interesting numbers. Of course, you also have to continue to take into account the actual games played. Semin take a hit for missed games - Malkin in AO, not so much.

I say Nylander is a very good possibility of being traded, being healthy scratch for 4 games. And not commenting on the DNT in his contract. I think Georgie boy is trying. Anyone disagree?, we need a Def with a little speed and PK experience. Watching Jeff Schultz skate up and down is like watching hair grow. He is even tragically slow in NHL 2K9.

Posted by: bhound69 | March 4, 2009 12:47 PM | Report abuse

The Flames just became a major contender in the West with Jokinen but they will need to move someone for the Cap. Maybe Accoin? if the Caps can clear some space, could he be someone we could use?

Hockeypope, I saw the goal and the celebration and might be willing to say they were overjoyous to the point the other 2 players actually knocked Federov off balance, so it looked like they scored an OT goal in game 7 of the Stanley Cup Finals. Really, who's going to remember it in a week anyway? We have bigger fish to fry.
