Ovechkin Nets No. 50

Alex Ovechkin netted No. 50 during a four-on-four in the first period tonight to become the first Capital to score 50 goals three times and only the second active player to have accomplished the feat (Teemu Selanne is the other).

After ripping a shot past Mike McKenna, Ovechkin dropped his stick then bent over it and attempted to pick it up. But each time he reached down he pretended that the stick was too hot to touch.

The Lightning fans didn't appreciate the gesture and booed Ovechkin. Can't wait to see what Don Cherry will have to say about it on Coach's Corner on Saturday night.

Posted by: Sonyask | March 19, 2009 8:43 PM | Report abuse

Posted by: goskins1982 | March 19, 2009 8:46 PM | Report abuse

Ovi's celebration was juvenile -- and worse, premeditated.

Posted by: miseaujeu | March 19, 2009 8:46 PM | Report abuse

nope.

come on feds, that would be butter for you 15 years ago!

Posted by: richmondphil | March 19, 2009 8:46 PM | Report abuse

what position do you play rachel?? ;P

Posted by: ludeman95 | March 19, 2009 8:32 PM

I play goalie :0 hehe. jk.

Was it in, was it in?!

Come on, it's a goal!!

Posted by: rachel216 | March 19, 2009 8:48 PM | Report abuse

I think it was in, unless I am blind.

Posted by: rachel216 | March 19, 2009 8:49 PM | Report abuse

I like having video reviewer in house and in Toronto is a good system. Much better than in the NFL, where the referee has to overturn his own call.

phil, did you agree abt Poti or were you sarcastic?

puck did cross the line I though.

Get off your knees ref, your blowing the game!

Posted by: ludeman95 | March 19, 2009 8:10 PM

Posted by: ludeman95 | March 19, 2009 8:53 PM | Report abuse

What about Poti?

Posted by: richmondphil | March 19, 2009 8:54 PM | Report abuse

How could the puck have not gone in?

Posted by: MReilly9 | March 19, 2009 8:54 PM | Report abuse

being pushed vs pushing

Posted by: mauree | March 19, 2009 8:55 PM | Report abuse

Oh yeah, my comment was directed at yours, and dave's indirectly.

Poti should have been the one doing the pushing there.

Posted by: richmondphil | March 19, 2009 8:56 PM | Report abuse

thx mauree for the heads up :)

Posted by: cstanton1 | March 19, 2009 8:57 PM | Report abuse

malone wants to beat the snot out of poti for some reason, he wants him bad

Posted by: cstanton1 | March 19, 2009 8:58 PM | Report abuse

cs

he thought Poti was holding on the puck, but it was stuck on his glove.

Posted by: mauree | March 19, 2009 9:00 PM | Report abuse

laing looks so good. setup stecks monster.

Posted by: richmondphil | March 19, 2009 9:01 PM | Report abuse

that was a trip on Ovi, how can you call the push to Poti and not call that one.

Posted by: mauree | March 19, 2009 9:03 PM | Report abuse

And Laing does not like opposing teams taking shots at our guys, the first one to stick up for someone.

Posted by: ludeman95 | March 19, 2009 9:03 PM | Report abuse

wow refs staring right at ovie and misses the blatant trip!

Posted by: rachel216 | March 19, 2009 9:03 PM | Report abuse

far as im concerned i'll take laing over gordon in the lineup, he makes the steckel line so much better becauase all 3 players on that line play the same way. Gordon is quick but he stinks along the boards, he doesn't like to forecheck the way the laing-steck-brads line does

Posted by: cstanton1 | March 19, 2009 9:04 PM | Report abuse

Good to see some more agression on that last PK. Seemed to be missing earlier

Posted by: Sonyask | March 19, 2009 9:04 PM | Report abuse

Feds didn't realize he had more time. Unfortunate.

Posted by: Davethecapsfan | March 19, 2009 9:07 PM | Report abuse

Laing's great -- true grit -- but cheez, it's hist first game of the season. a little early for verdict.

Dang! score

Posted by: Sonyask | March 19, 2009 9:07 PM | Report abuse

No reason for 4 guys to drop back in front of Varly there and all of them not have a clue when it comes to clearing it out.

Posted by: Davethecapsfan | March 19, 2009 9:08 PM | Report abuse

varly is having rebound control issues.

Posted by: rachel216 | March 19, 2009 9:08 PM | Report abuse

you got to give it to St. Louis, he was a little ball of fire that shift.

Posted by: mauree | March 19, 2009 9:08 PM | Report abuse

you can blame that goal on Mike Green pussing out on engaging Ryan Malone, he let Malone just push him out of the way for the puck.

Posted by: cstanton1 | March 19, 2009 9:08 PM | Report abuse

How did St Lois score?

Posted by: fnralch | March 19, 2009 9:09 PM | Report abuse

and im not talking about the country.

Posted by: richmondphil | March 19, 2009 9:09 PM | Report abuse

Posted by: ludeman95 | March 19, 2009 9:09 PM | Report abuse

can we have a PP?

Posted by: rachel216 | March 19, 2009 9:10 PM | Report abuse

Dang! score

Posted by: Sonyask | March 19, 2009 9:07 PM

not at all, this is the way he plays EVERY game and if he's going to play his first game this year the way he's played every previous nhl game i got no prblem cashing in the verdict

Posted by: cstanton1 | March 19, 2009 9:11 PM | Report abuse

I hope Fed's misses in the 2nd don't come back to haunt us.

Posted by: rachel216 | March 19, 2009 9:11 PM | Report abuse

Posted by: Davethecapsfan | March 19, 2009 9:12 PM | Report abuse

juice, push the guy WHILE he's screening Varly, not AFTER. Shees he was all alone till after the whistle.

Posted by: mauree | March 19, 2009 9:13 PM | Report abuse

bradley just dumped someone at the boards.

Posted by: richmondphil | March 19, 2009 9:10 PM

Posted by: cstanton1 | March 19, 2009 9:13 PM | Report abuse

@WVPhil

I noticed that. It's gotten bad. I remember in 2002, USA was pretty good.

I was talking about the NCAA game... unless of course you were joking and i just missed the /sarcasm. :)

Posted by: WVPhil | March 19, 2009 9:16 PM | Report abuse

ah, so it is ridley then. but ovechkin is very, very close to passing that.

Posted by: richmondphil | March 19, 2009 9:17 PM | Report abuse

richmondphil, I wasn't even born when he started playing for the Caps & I was eight when he left. I get a free pass. At least I'm trying to expand my knowledge.

Vinny's stick must be flat. no curve at all.

how the hell does he get his backhands off like that?

Posted by: ludeman95 | March 19, 2009 9:23 PM | Report abuse

Semin claims not to know English, but he at least knows how to say, "Who, me?"

Ovie's preplanned stick on the ice shtick was comparable to those lame NFL TD celebrations. Ovie, that was beneath you. Go back to showing your normal celebrations.

Posted by: rw-c | March 19, 2009 9:23 PM | Report abuse

Semin should pass Ridley next year too.

Posted by: richmondphil | March 19, 2009 9:23 PM | Report abuse

ah, nevermind. I read that as not including this season, but it does.

Semin should get that in two years.

Posted by: richmondphil | March 19, 2009 9:24 PM | Report abuse

@rw-c: wrote: Semin claims not to know English, but he at least knows how to say, "Who, me?

I think Semin also said something (with 4 letters) before the "who me!"

Posted by: dezlboy1 | March 19, 2009 9:24 PM | Report abuse

LAK just tied in BOS, going to OT.

Posted by: mauree | March 19, 2009 9:26 PM | Report abuse

Funny how everything was all laid back but a few...interesting...calls and this is a 2-2 game up for grabs. I hope BB reminds them whatever the score maybe should be, it's not and they need to play a good 3rd here to lock up 2 points.

Posted by: Davethecapsfan | March 19, 2009 9:28 PM | Report abuse

ludeman95, Sorry!!!
richmondphil, huh? That would require Semin scoring 115 goals. Think he can do that in two seasons?

Posted by: jmu_capsgirl | March 19, 2009 9:28 PM | Report abuse

Come on kings!

Posted by: ludeman95 | March 19, 2009 9:29 PM | Report abuse

Kings win in OT what a comeback

Posted by: Davethecapsfan | March 19, 2009 9:30 PM | Report abuse

naw, but he should be a 40+/40 guy.

so 3 seasons?

Posted by: richmondphil | March 19, 2009 9:30 PM | Report abuse

Semin has 103 goals total no?

Posted by: mauree | March 19, 2009 9:32 PM | Report abuse

The kings win!

Posted by: mauree | March 19, 2009 9:32 PM | Report abuse

Sweet

yes, 103.

so 3 seasons. :)

i love Varlamov.

Posted by: richmondphil | March 19, 2009 9:33 PM | Report abuse

Yeah, three seasons sounds good. So, 2011-12 barring a major run. Although, I guess you could add several since he'll pot a bunch in the playoffs we'll be making! Maybe 2010-11 will be right.

All right boys, don't relax, score one more if possible to bring it home.

Posted by: mauree | March 19, 2009 9:35 PM | Report abuse

green is good but the forwards made that one real easy for him, they drew all the defenders to them and gave him a great pass while screening the goalie

Posted by: cstanton1 | March 19, 2009 9:35 PM | Report abuse

i love Varlamov.

Posted by: richmondphil

Same. He's gonna be an AWESOME goalie for us. He's having a great game, just gotta work on the rebound control a little and otherwise his game is great, I love how he comes out so far to challenge. :) Go Varly! Yay Boston gets 1 point only, thanks LA!

Posted by: rachel216 | March 19, 2009 9:36 PM | Report abuse

ferocious fore check.

Posted by: richmondphil | March 19, 2009 9:36 PM | Report abuse

Kozlov going to the net finally someone there to pick up the rebounds from Ovie's heavy shots. Great pass from behind the goal too.

Posted by: Davethecapsfan | March 19, 2009 9:36 PM | Report abuse

nylander should watch fedorov play sometime

Posted by: cstanton1 | March 19, 2009 9:37 PM | Report abuse

Posted by: goskins1982 | March 19, 2009 9:38 PM | Report abuse

Why do we refuse to shoot high on breakaways? It would be a lock.

finish, finish, finish.

Posted by: richmondphil | March 19, 2009 9:39 PM | Report abuse

Posted by: ralCapsFan | March 19, 2009 9:40 PM | Report abuse

Laing draws a penalty. The guy just plays with so much heart

Posted by: Davethecapsfan | March 19, 2009 9:40 PM | Report abuse

we heart Laing

Posted by: mauree | March 19, 2009 9:40 PM | Report abuse

and thats what a good forecheck will do, draw a penalty!
if brash was playing that entire 4th line would be on the bench right now in a 1 goal game in the 3rd, Bruce has a lot of faith in Laing to put him out there in this situation and it paid off with a PP

Posted by: cstanton1 | March 19, 2009 9:41 PM | Report abuse

It's Ovi's turn

Posted by: Sonyask | March 19, 2009 9:42 PM | Report abuse

I will admit the more I see of "no Brash" I have to say our 4th line can be so much more effective without him most of the time.

Posted by: Davethecapsfan | March 19, 2009 9:42 PM | Report abuse

Kozlov once again making a great pass. Wow Nylander went to the net and took a shot look what he found?

Posted by: richmondphil | March 19, 2009 9:44 PM | Report abuse

3 points for Ovie...let's pour it on I want him to equal Malkin's 5. Wish he had stashed that breakaway...

Posted by: Davethecapsfan | March 19, 2009 9:44 PM | Report abuse

i have yet to see the caps play with this much vigor after taking a 2 goal lead in any game and its the Laing line leading the way, they're forechecking like the caps are down by 2

Posted by: cstanton1 | March 19, 2009 9:45 PM | Report abuse

Kozlov has been playing well since he came back from that injury. Really is a guy we miss when he's out...great play-making tonight.

Posted by: rachel216 | March 19, 2009 9:46 PM | Report abuse

Yeah Nylander!

I thought the D missed the block on the pass but on replay looked like he raised his stick on purpose cause he was afraid he'd tip it in.

wouldve been a goal without the hook.

Posted by: richmondphil | March 19, 2009 9:47 PM | Report abuse

Posted by: Davethecapsfan | March 19, 2009 9:47 PM | Report abuse

Good job Sasha

Posted by: Sonyask | March 19, 2009 9:47 PM | Report abuse

Posted by: goskins1982 | March 19, 2009 9:48 PM | Report abuse

Well deserved by that line.

Posted by: mauree | March 19, 2009 9:52 PM | Report abuse

I gotta give our D credit tonight...for some reason they've made some great poke checks on St. Louis and Vinny that most nights seems like the opposing forwards would just blow by them for odd man breaks. Workmanlike 3rd period by us (coincidence the shot blocking machine is one of the catalysts?) nice to see after having some bad breaks for it to be 2-2 after 2 periods.

Posted by: Davethecapsfan | March 19, 2009 9:52 PM | Report abuse

the ideal lineup would have brash and gordo on the bench with laing and a healthy chris clark back in. That would make us much stronger in the playoffs. Too bad about CC's wrist injury.

Posted by: cstanton1 | March 19, 2009 9:53 PM | Report abuse

Poti made a great stick lift on vinny as well.

Posted by: CapsSkins | March 19, 2009 9:54 PM | Report abuse

my mistake...i meant 7-1 considering fehr's did cross the line!

Posted by: CapsSkins | March 19, 2009 9:54 PM | Report abuse

Varlamov is so quick. he just needs to work on how to control that quickness.

Posted by: richmondphil | March 19, 2009 9:55 PM | Report abuse

Posted by: CapsFan75 | March 19, 2009 9:56 PM | Report abuse

Don't forget we've muffed a couple breakaways again tonight and Semin forced a penalty to negate yet another "I turned everyone including the goalie into a pylon" goals.

Posted by: Davethecapsfan | March 19, 2009 9:56 PM | Report abuse

Posted by: WVPhil | March 19, 2009 10:03 PM | Report abuse

ouch not the shoulder

Posted by: mauree | March 19, 2009 10:04 PM | Report abuse

Stamkos is a wrestler.

Posted by: richmondphil | March 19, 2009 10:04 PM | Report abuse

i think they are wrong...i think he hyperextended his elbow...i hope to god not!!!

Posted by: CapsSkins | March 19, 2009 10:04 PM | Report abuse

Sigh didn't look too good. Don't let it be something serious.

Posted by: Davethecapsfan | March 19, 2009 10:04 PM | Report abuse

Looks like a dislocation, which is better than a separation. But both are terrible

Posted by: gtydings | March 19, 2009 10:04 PM | Report abuse

I'm flying to Tampa & killing Stamkos myself.

What happened to Green? Is it bad?

Posted by: WVPhil | March 19, 2009 10:03 PM

Stamkos pulled him down by his shoulder.

sumo slam.

Posted by: richmondphil | March 19, 2009 10:04 PM | Report abuse

Definitely "upper body?"

Posted by: WVPhil | March 19, 2009 10:05 PM | Report abuse

Solid win, kinda null and void if Green is hurt serious. Laing was a stud (just like last year) Varly 3-0 in 3 starts.

Posted by: Davethecapsfan | March 19, 2009 10:05 PM | Report abuse

Yay win! Congrats to Varly and Ovie and everyone... please let Greenie be okay (stupid stamkos)

Posted by: rachel216 | March 19, 2009 10:06 PM | Report abuse

Magic number down to 7 points for Southeast crown.

Posted by: Davethecapsfan | March 19, 2009 10:06 PM | Report abuse

Varlamov with 26 saves.

Looked really good. first goal was on a PP and the second was a st louis shot from the doorstep.

Posted by: richmondphil | March 19, 2009 10:06 PM | Report abuse

definite left arm/shoulder/elbow...i think elbow because he pulled his arm as he fell and when green rolled over, he grabbed his elbow right away...could be taking pressure off shoulder but only time will tell.....definitely looks like he will be out a few games....if just precautionary.

Posted by: CapsSkins | March 19, 2009 10:07 PM | Report abuse

we only need to look at the ATL game to see how much green can influence our lineup. not good.

Posted by: richmondphil | March 19, 2009 10:08 PM | Report abuse

Sucks. While he doesn't help us too much on the defensive end, he does make up for it on the other end.

Posted by: WVPhil | March 19, 2009 10:08 PM | Report abuse

jmu_capsgirl: I'll come with you. How dare he do that to Green, that was so unnecessary, and playoffs start soon! AHHH! PLEASE let it be just a stinger.

Posted by: rachel216 | March 19, 2009 10:09 PM | Report abuse

I broke a wrist in a very similar fall where the guy landed on part of my arm. I hope it's not serious.

Posted by: tmac2yao | March 19, 2009 10:09 PM | Report abuse

Green has been good defensively...don't let a few giveaways taking some risks cloud the overall picture of how he plays in our zone.

Posted by: Davethecapsfan | March 19, 2009 10:10 PM | Report abuse

This game looked so much like the Detroit game in many ways. Similar juggling of lines.

Unfortunately, the F Street Bombers (and Semin) kept having bad luck.

Posted by: CapsFan75 | March 19, 2009 10:10 PM | Report abuse

That's it - I'm taking my bubble wrap down to Tampa and wrappin' the boys up. No more injuries!

Greenie, pleease be ok. We need you!

Laing was sick, as was Varly. Way to let OV look like a goof celebrating by himself, Greenie and Nickie. That was classic.

I hear that it was an elbow from some one downthere it looks like he might be out for carolina. but maybe not depending on how bad it is

Posted by: HockeyFarmer | March 19, 2009 10:10 PM | Report abuse

Fudge

Posted by: gtydings | March 19, 2009 10:11 PM | Report abuse

He should sit out either way, if not just for precautions. we dont want him going down before the playoffs.

Posted by: richmondphil | March 19, 2009 10:12 PM | Report abuse

Grr! Don't like Green being injured. Our defense is a disaster w/o him. I would have loved to have him against Carolina this Saturday. Green's injury has me worried.

Posted by: CapsFan75 | March 19, 2009 10:12 PM | Report abuse

Dave,
Not gonna argue with you, but lets just say that I disagree.

Posted by: WVPhil | March 19, 2009 10:13 PM | Report abuse

Green, please be okay. Cherry, s*ck it! Unless you've had 50 goal seasons yourself, shut it.

Hey Ovi! If fans were allowed to, we'd be celebrating just as mad crazy as you. Do what you do best - score goals!

Great game, Caps!

Oh, and great job, Nylander, for the goal!

Varlamov is ALWAYS so attentive in net. He has his glove up and he is just ready to pounce.

Love him.

Bad news from the lockeroom

Posted by: gtydings | March 19, 2009 10:16 PM | Report abuse

at this point does anyone care what don cherry has to say about it?

Posted by: _stevo | March 19, 2009 10:17 PM | Report abuse

varlamov/neuvy battles will be awesome in the next couple years. i really hope we can hold onto both of them...at least for a little while!

Posted by: CapsSkins | March 19, 2009 10:19 PM | Report abuse

Jose should never, ever play again for the Caps. Ever.

Posted by: gtydings | March 19, 2009 10:20 PM | Report abuse

You mean the Jose that pitched a shutout 2 nights ago. Yeah, okay.

For those who want Alzner back, you may get him now with Greener.

Posted by: CTCapsPhan | March 19, 2009 10:23 PM | Report abuse

awwww c'mon give the guy some credit...
as a huuuuuuuge johnny fan, i was about as anti-jose as they come. until a month or so ago.
obviously he is not an elite goaltender anymore. but he is great, and he is better than neuvy and varly, who so clearly still need time to develop.

also, as to ovi's goal celebration-
my only thought as to why it was occurring was "i bet ovi's thinking 'take THAT, don cherry!'"

Posted by: jess4caps | March 19, 2009 10:24 PM | Report abuse

Jim Carey won his first 4 starts for the Caps. just saying GTY...

Posted by: WVPhil | March 19, 2009 10:25 PM | Report abuse

Jim Carey was the best goalie in the NHL, for one year. If Varly can replicate that this year, fantastic

Posted by: gtydings | March 19, 2009 10:27 PM | Report abuse

Come on, tell me Ovie wasn't sticking it to Don Cherry with that celebration.

Posted by: farmgirl19C | March 19, 2009 10:32 PM | Report abuse

Ovie doesn't need to be the NHL's version of Chad Johnson...he's getting 100m, act like you've been there, or are going to be. F- Ovie's celebrations

Posted by: gtydings | March 19, 2009 10:39 PM | Report abuse

How does anybody know "bad news from the locker room"? There is "no news from the locker room".
