Ovechkin Nets No. 50
Alex Ovechkin netted No. 50 during a four-on-four in the first period tonight to become the first Capital to score 50 goals three times and only the second active player to have accomplished the feat (Teemu Selanne is the other).
After ripping a shot past Mike McKenna, Ovechkin dropped his stick then bent over it and attempted to pick it up. But each time he reached down he pretended that the stick was too hot to touch.
The Lightning fans didn't appreciate the gesture and booed Ovechkin. Can't wait to see what Don Cherry will have to say about it on Coach's Corner on Saturday night.

far as im concerned i'll take laing over gordon in the lineup, he makes the steckel line so much better becauase all 3 players on that line play the same way. Gordon is quick but he stinks along the boards, he doesn't like to forecheck the way the laing-steck-brads line does

if brash was playing that entire 4th line would be on the bench right now in a 1 goal game in the 3rd, Bruce has a lot of faith in Laing to put him out there in this situation and it paid off with a PP

I gotta give our D credit tonight...for some reason they've made some great poke checks on St. Louis and Vinny that most nights seems like the opposing forwards would just blow by them for odd man breaks. Workmanlike 3rd period by us (coincidence the shot blocking machine is one of the catalysts?) nice to see after having some bad breaks for it to be 2-2 after 2 periods.
Posted by: Davethecapsfan | March 19, 2009 9:52 PM | Report abuse

Sigh didn't look too good. Don't let it be something serious.

Looks like a dislocation, which is better than a separation. But both are terrible

I'm flying to Tampa & killing Stamkos myself.

What happened to Green? Is it bad?
Posted by: WVPhil | March 19, 2009 10:03 PM
Stamkos pulled him down by his shoulder.
sumo slam.
Posted by: richmondphil | March 19, 2009 10:04 PM | Report abuse
Definitely "upper body?"
Posted by: WVPhil | March 19, 2009 10:05 PM | Report abuse
Solid win, kinda null and void if Green is hurt serious. Laing was a stud (just like last year) Varly 3-0 in 3 starts.
Posted by: Davethecapsfan | March 19, 2009 10:05 PM | Report abuse
Yay win! Congrats to Varly and Ovie and everyone... please let Greenie be okay (stupid stamkos)

Magic number down to 7 points for Southeast crown.

Varlamov with 26 saves.
Looked really good. first goal was on a PP and the second was a st louis shot from the doorstep.
Posted by: richmondphil | March 19, 2009 10:06 PM | Report abuse
definite left arm/shoulder/elbow...i think elbow because he pulled his arm as he fell and when green rolled over, he grabbed his elbow right away...could be taking pressure off shoulder but only time will tell.....definitely looks like he will be out a few games....if just precautionary.
Posted by: CapsSkins | March 19, 2009 10:07 PM | Report abuse
we only need to look at the ATL game to see how much green can influence our lineup. not good.
Posted by: richmondphil | March 19, 2009 10:08 PM | Report abuse
Sucks. While he doesn't help us too much on the defensive end, he does make up for it on the other end.
Posted by: WVPhil | March 19, 2009 10:08 PM | Report abuse
jmu_capsgirl: I'll come with you. How dare he do that to Green, that was so unnecessary, and playoffs start soon! AHHH! PLEASE let it be just a stinger.
Posted by: rachel216 | March 19, 2009 10:09 PM | Report abuse
I broke a wrist in a very similar fall where the guy landed on part of my arm. I hope it's not serious.

Green has been good defensively...don't let a few giveaways taking some risks cloud the overall picture of how he plays in our zone.

This game looked so much like the Detroit game in many ways. Similar juggling of lines.
Unfortunately, the F Street Bombers (and Semin) kept having bad luck.

That's it - I'm taking my bubble wrap down to Tampa and wrappin' the boys up. No more injuries!
Greenie, pleease be ok. We need you!
Laing was sick, as was Varly. Way to let OV look like a goof celebrating by himself, Greenie and Nickie. That was classic.

I hear that it was an elbow from some one downthere it looks like he might be out for carolina. but maybe not depending on how bad it is

Fudge
Posted by: gtydings | March 19, 2009 10:11 PM | Report abuse
He should sit out either way, if not just for precautions. we dont want him going down before the playoffs.
Posted by: richmondphil | March 19, 2009 10:12 PM | Report abuse
Grr! Don't like Green being injured. Our defense is a disaster w/o him. I would have loved to have him against Carolina this Saturday. Green's injury has me worried.

Dave,
Not gonna argue with you, but lets just say that I disagree.
Posted by: WVPhil | March 19, 2009 10:13 PM | Report abuse
Green, please be okay. Cherry, s*ck it! Unless you've had 50 goal seasons yourself, shut it.
Hey Ovi! If fans were allowed to, we'd be celebrating just as mad crazy as you. Do what you do best - score goals!
Great game, Caps!
Oh, and great job, Nylander, for the goal!

Varlamov is ALWAYS so attentive in net. He has his glove up and he is just ready to pounce.
Love him.

Bad news from the lockeroom
Posted by: gtydings | March 19, 2009 10:16 PM | Report abuse
at this point does anyone care what don cherry has to say about it?
Posted by: _stevo | March 19, 2009 10:17 PM | Report abuse
varlamov/neuvy battles will be awesome in the next couple years. i really hope we can hold onto both of them...at least for a little while!
Posted by: CapsSkins | March 19, 2009 10:19 PM | Report abuse
Jose should never, ever play again for the Caps. Ever.
Posted by: gtydings | March 19, 2009 10:20 PM | Report abuse
You mean the Jose that pitched a shutout 2 nights ago. Yeah, okay.
For those who want Alzner back, you may get him now with Greener.
Posted by: CTCapsPhan | March 19, 2009 10:23 PM | Report abuse
awwww c'mon give the guy some credit...
as a huuuuuuuge johnny fan, i was about as anti-jose as they come. until a month or so ago.
obviously he is not an elite goaltender anymore. but he is great, and he is better than neuvy and varly, who so clearly still need time to develop.
also, as to ovi's goal celebration-
my only thought as to why it was occurring was "i bet ovi's thinking 'take THAT, don cherry!'"

Jim Carey won his first 4 starts for the Caps. just saying GTY...
Posted by: WVPhil | March 19, 2009 10:25 PM | Report abuse
Jim Carey was the best goalie in the NHL, for one year. If Varly can replicate that this year, fantastic
Posted by: gtydings | March 19, 2009 10:27 PM | Report abuse
Come on, tell me Ovie wasn't sticking it to Don Cherry with that celebration.
Posted by: farmgirl19C | March 19, 2009 10:32 PM | Report abuse
Ovie doesn't need to be the NHL's version of Chad Johnson...he's getting 100m, act like you've been there, or are going to be. F- Ovie's celebrations
