Ovechkin Not Practicing

While it's not completely unusual for Alex Ovechkin to take a practice off, it does strike me as a bit odd that he's not out there this morning. All of the other big minute players, like Mike Green, Nicklas Backstrom, Alexander Semin and Brooks Laich, are skating.

A team spokesman said Ovechkin is not hurt. But let's see what Coach Bruce Boudreau has to say afterward.

Hopefully it's nothing to be concerned about.

...........well at least one person is...

Ovechkin is probably trying to stir things up for the series and get into the Penguins heads

Posted by: BigMogilny | April 30, 2009 11:08 AM | Report abuse

Game over man. Might as well quit now.

Posted by: Leeguru | April 30, 2009 11:08 AM | Report abuse

Or maybe that's Tarik trying to stir things up... what did I say?

Posted by: BigMogilny | April 30, 2009 11:09 AM | Report abuse

Hmmm, noticed Ovie was not quite his normal self during game 7. Wondering if he might have hurt himself delivering one of his crushing hits.

practice..we're talking about practice...

2 things...

He may be trying to rest his legs...

It is also known that he has some different training routines then others...so who knows..

I wouldnt worry....

Posted by: SA-Town | April 30, 2009 11:17 AM | Report abuse

to be clear, when asked if ovie was injured, a team spokesman said, "yes, ovie has a broken..." just before he was tasered by GMGM and dragged to the basement of KCI.

Posted by: dcsportsfan1 | April 30, 2009 11:17 AM | Report abuse

Yeah, I'm sure that a team spokesman would come close to acknowledging to a random fan that Ovechkin has an injury.

@dcsportsfan1

playoffs? your talking about playoffs

Posted by: _stevo | April 30, 2009 11:21 AM | Report abuse

Ovie probably drank Russia House dry......

Posted by: RedBirdie | April 30, 2009 11:22 AM | Report abuse

Unless his leg is being amputated, he's playing Saturday. Even if he doesn't practice.

Posted by: oldtimehockey | April 30, 2009 11:23 AM | Report abuse

Crap...hope he didn't get Greenie's flu bug or worse the Swine Crap!

Posted by: lylewimbledon | April 30, 2009 11:23 AM | Report abuse

Ovie has swine flu, and Crosby has a yeast infection.

NBC has just switch from Game 1 coverage to the World Series of 1 on 1 poker with childhood TV sitcom stars.

Posted by: SA-Town | April 30, 2009 11:27 AM | Report abuse

If Semin is out there, then Ovie was not drinking. Instead he is in Pittsburgh watching them practice.

Posted by: RuskiSi | April 30, 2009 11:29 AM | Report abuse

Ovechkin is invincible - no need to worry.

Posted by: ralph4100 | April 30, 2009 11:30 AM | Report abuse

He's probably in Pittsburgh watching the Pens practice.

Posted by: ModestProposal | April 30, 2009 11:33 AM | Report abuse

@BiggJohn: You must be a Pens fan based on your comments in the last thread. Fleury has not been stellar either. The Pens were up 3-1 and he needed his team to bail him out in his 2nd attempt to close out the series. He gave up 3 goals in his first attempt to close the Flyers out, game 5 in Pitts, and 3 in game 6 in Philly. If not for the Biron collapse, and a couple of very nice goals by Pens, he would had to try to win a game 7. If I were a Pens fan I would expected a better performance in games 5 and 6 from my goaltender.

Our youngster on the other hand won 3 MUST win games in a row giving up only 4 goals in those 3 games. If there is a goaltender advantage for Pittsburgh the margin is much smaller with Varly in net than when Theo was there.

It's Thursday, isn't it? And not Friday? I'd be more concerned if this was Friday and not Thursday. Chill out, hockey fiends. I'm sure he'll be on the ice tomorrow practice.

Goo Caps!

Posted by: LeftCoastCapsFan | April 30, 2009 11:35 AM | Report abuse

It seems most of the predictions are going with the Pens and the difference maker being their defense. When I look back at the numbers over the last part of the season, Pitts definitely had the edge defensively. But some things have changed since then. We got Pothier back and we have Varly in net.

My heart is with the Caps and my mind says Game 7 OT. Its anyone's series, no favorite.

I actually found a RT deal from Austin for this weekend that would make the trip not completely impractical.

Anyone have any ticket-hunting advice for Sat's game?

Thanks!

He is getting a new jock because Crosby is heading to D.C. and everyone knows how Cindy fights.

The good thing about Varly and any claims that he is not ready for the next series is this..

-He cant read blogs or papers,
-Doesnt understand sportscenter or the nightly news
-Boudreau doesnt even talk to him
-He knows his job is to "catch pucks" and doesnt give a rats whats going on up ice.
-Avery punched him in the face, and he was like a statue and didnt think twice about anything but the game.
- He was 4 the last time the Pens won the Cup..

SA-Town,

Now that made my day!!! Even chuckled out loud... Go Caps!!!

Posted by: hbcapsfan | April 30, 2009 11:50 AM | Report abuse

Why would we be worried about Varly? Theodore beat the Pens three times this year, and didn't give up more than three non-shootout goals in any game. If Theodore had that kind of success against them, why shouldn't Varly?

Posted by: cassini | April 30, 2009 11:55 AM | Report abuse

@SA-town

Always sonmething good to say, I told my boss today to NOT to talk to me until after the series, and he mumbled something about update AND resume'. mmmmmmmmm...I need to hire Varly as a consultant.

Tarik: Does Nyls still look like the odd man out or do it look like he might get Flash's spot since he's been underwhelming?

Also, please tell me Clarkie looks like he's secured his spot back in the line-up.

probably an upper hangover injury...

Ovechkin's Dad said Alex was working out with his personal trainer:

Ovie is kind of an information junky (blogs, watching practices, learning from peoples moves etc)... I know this is a stretch but isn't it possible he's watching pens footage?

But mainly this smellys like a mindgame. It seems like before every rangers game Ovie said some quote, or pulled some stunt to just keep him in their heads.

Posted by: mrszilla | April 30, 2009 12:08 PM | Report abuse

Having Kapitonov here is awesome. He tunes Ovie really well. Ovie said last year that Kapitonov had really helped him to end a long slump.

Posted by: CodePoetry | April 30, 2009 12:15 PM | Report abuse

Ovechkin's great. But who isn't getting any credit at all, relatively speaking? Mr. Clutch: Alex Semin: 5 goals, 8 points. Why isn't he getting the press he deserves?

Posted by: tw46 | April 30, 2009 12:15 PM | Report abuse

Matt 'Wesley' Bradley is my hero, he changed the momentum in the series.

Posted by: CodePoetry | April 30, 2009 12:18 PM | Report abuse

He's probably just watching the Penguins practice.

". . . just switch from Game 1 coverage to the World Series of 1 on 1 poker . . ."

1 on 1 poker? World Series? Is that instead of the regularly scheduled ice tournament for Stanley's Super Bowl?

Jokes are funnier if you get the names right. Just an FYI.

Posted by: McBride33 | April 30, 2009 12:22 PM | Report abuse

I am thinking it's a mindgame, given Ovie's penchant for them against NYR. Maybe he's injured.....maybe not. Keep 'em guessing.....and wondering. It's killing me though! GO OVIE!! GO CAPS!!!

Posted by: AmyS1 | April 30, 2009 12:27 PM | Report abuse

Kapitonov gave no reason for Ovechkin's seven-game goal drought, but said on a recent visit he found Ovechkin had neglected off-ice exercise to maintain his endurance. Kapitonov got Ovechkin back on the exercise bike, improved Ovechkin's aerobic capacity and then got out of the way.

I'd like to think it's some sort of gamesmanship but, really, what's the point? Are the Penguins going to prepare as if he won't be playing, or won't be playing full speed?

Hopefully it's a rest day and no big deal.

Posted by: Zornado | April 30, 2009 12:31 PM | Report abuse

I think Alex should be caught having lunch with Cherry and Bettman AND Lemieux. Now how's that for mind games? =P
