Ovechkin on motivation, Game 1

Alex Ovechkin talked about being the favorite and if the Capitals are a bit more focused considering three of four road teams won to open the playoffs last night. He also discussed if he has more motivation after failing to win the Art Ross and Rocket Richard trophies.

"It's the playoffs, and it doesn't matter what spot you take," Ovechkin said of being on alert after underdogs did so well to open the playoffs. "For us I think doesn't matter what the results [were]. You know, I don't care."

As for playing with a chip on his shoulders after missing out on the overall and goal scoring titles, Ovechkin said he was not concerned about those individual accomplishments.

"I'm not angry about personal stats, personal awards," he said. "I want team awards."

As for tonight's opener, Ovechkin said: "I think Game 1 is most important game in the series. I think I'm going to be a little bit nervous in the first five minutes, so you just play your game, and I think we'll be okay."

Here's what Ovechkin had to say on those topics following the morning skate at KCI:

Have you noticed how FOCUSED the team seems to be going into the Playoffs this year versus last year? Last year we were talking about Mike Green's mohawk and Ovi dying his hair red, etc. Nothing that I know of like that THIS year. One goal. The Cup. Nothing can get in our way. GO CAPS.

I think Ovi is going to explode in the playoffs.

That is worrying for opponents.

Interesting as we approach zero hour for Caps playoffs I don't see all those worthless stats about Pres Cup winners odds, etc.

Its hockey time.

Actually Tarik provided:
"Jose Theodore, as expected, came off first and looked fine while taking shots, despite suffering a "stinger" on his left knee in practice yesterday." That was in the Caps' lines stay the same thread.

Playing nervous is playing to lose, Ovie. Play with smelling salts in your nose. You know what to do to destroy them tonight.

We've never had a chance like this. We've got to do it now. There is no "next year" this time.

Overwhelming force. From the bell. Tonight, we send the West a message : "Whoever you send us, we are going to destroy them."
