Ovechkin records hat trick in Caps' win

Whether you made it to Verizon Center or not, aren't you glad this game didn't get postponed?

I heard people afterward calling today's 5-4 overtime win the best regular-season game in Capitals history. Because I haven't seen each and every last one of them, I can't say whether it was or wasn't. But it's got to be in the conversation.

Check out my gamer here, then come on back for a few notes and quotes:

*The win was the Caps' 14th in a row, which is tied for the third longest in NHL history (with the 1929-30 Bruins). It also was their 11th straight at home, which set a franchise record.

*When the Caps went down 2-0 on a pair of goals by Sidney Crosby, who else had flashbacks of Game 7 last May? Come on, be honest.

"I think it's the weather," Ovechkin said of the slow start. "The [late-arriving] crowd was getting in during the first period. You could see the crowd pushing us in the third period and we just keep going, keep going. It's pretty sick."

*Ovechkin's hat trick was the Capitals' first of the season, his first since Feb. 15, 2009 in Florida, and helped him take the lead in goals with 42 and extended his lead in points with 86. He also got the hard hat for the second time this season.

"He finds a way," Boudreau said. "When he's in the zone, he's in the zone and it doesn't matter. When you start hitting him, and he starts getting his adrenaline going, all he needs to do is touch the puck as he did on his third goal. It was 'boom' and it was in the net."

*The officiating left both teams frustrated. The Caps were angry about the phantom slashing call assessed to Jeff Schultz (Matt Cooke's stick broke on its own) late in regulation. And the Pens were upset about Brooks Orpik's high stick on Alexander Semin in OT.

"The one ref was five feet from the play and didn't make the call and the ref who was outside the blue line makes the call with four minutes to go in the game," Coach Bruce Boudreau said. "I know they're human, but that one was a tough one to swallow."

Orpik was steamed, too.

"He sells it all the time," the Pens D-man said of Semin. "The kid's a baby. He does it all game long. I've got zero respect for the kid. If it was a penalty, it was a penalty. I don't know. But the kid does that all game long. It's tough to lose on that."

*Jose Theodore's 31-save effort got lost in Ovechkin's hat trick and the winning streak. But I thought he was outstanding, especially in the third period, when he stopped all 11 shots he faced to close the door. His biggest save came at 11:38 of the third when he snatched a rocket off the stick of Alex Goligoski out of midair.

"Theodore played great," Boudreau said. "The sign of a good goalie to me is when you're tied at the end or up one goal, it's someone who can preserve that one-goal lead and give you an opportunity to win it, and he did."

Theodore added: "We didn't let down. I felt pretty good. There's one thing about me, I'm a fighter. Tonight, I just said I'm going to keep fighting until [my teammates] came through."

*Mike Knuble said his decision to fight Craig Adams in the first period was part sticking up for a teammate and part trying to fire up the bench. Adams who pushed Ovechkin headfirst into the boards from behind.

"I saw [Ovechkin] there and thought maybe you've got to wake yourself up one way or another, get yourself into the game," Knuble said. "Sometimes you have to get in the fray a little bit."

That's it from here. Geno wrote a sidebar on all the travel issues facing the teams and fans today, which you can read here. The Caps are not scheduled to practice tomorrow.

Sooooo glad I made it to the game. The roads were terrible, and it was a huge pain to get there, but so worth it.

I love it every time we go home happy and send the Pens and their worthless fans home miserable.

orpik's mug needs to be placed in each urinal at VC

Posted by: theCamMike | February 7, 2010 6:03 PM | Report abuse

@wowkanut

That is the honest to God truth -- on Orpik.

Memo to Caps: they should post Orpik's comments in the locker room. As if they need more motivation against the Pens.

Sasha says, "Don't call me baby" and pots the game winning goal in the next game or the playoffs.

@TwoBuckChuck

Too bad I couldn't go. Only SUV's could get out of our subdivision. While our driveway was shoveled, we probably would have gotten stuck.

Posted by: CapsFan75 | February 7, 2010 6:04 PM | Report abuse

Wow...That's some serious belly-aching from Orpik. Sounds like a PeeWee player crying to his Mom on the way home from the rink. Somebody get this whiner a Happy Meal.

Posted by: CheckingLine | February 7, 2010 6:04 PM | Report abuse

It dont get no better, regular season than this. It's just tremendous sport, theater and this team just looks maore agressive, more mature. Knuble is huge as was the Chimera aquisition. Alex takes that C to heart. He has the heart of a lion. Theo also stands tall.

Posted by: ridgely1 | February 7, 2010 6:07 PM | Report abuse

Yeah Orpik, you lost because of the penalty in overtime. It had nothing to do with squandering a 4-1 lead in regulation.

Posted by: SlugGirl69 | February 7, 2010 6:12 PM | Report abuse

it looked like they had the playoff refs out there today ..did they come on the bus with the Pens that NBC couldnt stop talking about how incredible the pens were playing after such a long and hard trip on a bus

Posted by: heathdog1119 | February 7, 2010 6:15 PM | Report abuse

Wow! Has Orpick been taking crying lessons from Sid? That high stick was the most obvious call of the game! And they got a huge Phantom call on Schultz! So they have NOTHING to whine about.

Posted by: capscoach | February 7, 2010 6:15 PM | Report abuse

What an awesome game! Thankfully I made it there and back safe(and even gave a lift to some fellow fans) The officiating was unbelievable, it's tough to beat both the other team and the refs! OV made it all worthwhile. Thanks team, it was a wonderful Bday present for my daughter. Thanks too, Tariq for keeping us current on what was happening with the game!

Posted by: hockeymom5 | February 7, 2010 6:16 PM | Report abuse

Can someone who watched on TV say what happened on the Semin call? It's rare to see a high stick that the victim doesn't try and sell, so what is it that Orpik's crying about?

Ovi got a beautiful punch to Orpik's face earlier in the game -- nice a clean.

Posted by: Sonyask | February 7, 2010 6:16 PM | Report abuse

". . . nice & clean"

Posted by: Sonyask | February 7, 2010 6:17 PM | Report abuse

If Orpik didn't think he did it why did he go over to Semin and appear to apologize? afterwards?

Posted by: hockeymom5 | February 7, 2010 6:21 PM | Report abuse

The officiating was pretty poor, and both teams were dinged by it. I don't think he (they) would be crying if they'd gotten a goal off of Shultz's "slashing"...they got away with interference and an elbow on Theo, they got away with a LOT, as they always do. Screw Orpik.

Well, at least from the far end of the ice, it looked like somebody on the Pens faked getting hit with a high stick and Semin ended up in the box. So quit cryin' Orpik.

Posted by: cainoo7x | February 7, 2010 6:27 PM | Report abuse

Wow, how classy ORPRICK.

Calling another athlete a baby. How funny that he would call someone else a baby yet he's the one crying about the penalty and how he's got no respect for Semin. Well whoever made Brooks Orprick the authority of everything? Who gives a crap if Orprick has respect for Semin? It's like he thinks his opinion matters. It doesn't. Don't be complaining about that penalty when your team just got a gift call from the referees. MORON. Semin sure as heck has accomplished more in his career than this PUNK will ever. And people wonder why the Pens are so hated... everyone on that team has something to whine about. How about you not let a team come back from down 4-1 then maybe you won't be complaining about that OT penalty. It's your own fault! But like every Penguin, it's always someone else's fault.

Posted by: rachel216 | February 7, 2010 6:28 PM | Report abuse

If orpik didn't know if it was or wasn't a high stick, what's he b1itching about? If it was a highstick then I suppose semin wasn't embellishing. Since you don't know, shut your trap you cheap shot artist.

Posted by: dcsportsfan1 | February 7, 2010 6:31 PM | Report abuse

it's kinda funny to hear Orpik calling Semin a kid even though he's only 4 years older than him... LOL

Posted by: joek443 | February 7, 2010 6:32 PM | Report abuse

Look, Orbit Gum is just pissed that his Hens failed to protect a 3 goal lead.

Posted by: MyPostIDisAfake | February 7, 2010 6:34 PM | Report abuse

@SlugGirl69, Rachel216, cainoo7x, and others,

Embellishment my eye. How would YOU like to be hit in the face with a stick as you did with Semin? How would you?

As far as I'm concerned, today was payback time for Orpik. This is the same guy who slashed Semin in the thumb during the playoffs. AND also slashed him in the face during the playoffs (with Semin needing stitches). About time he gets caught for his little shenanigans.

Posted by: CapsFan75 | February 7, 2010 6:34 PM | Report abuse

If anyone had a right to complain about a wrong call on them it is SCHULTZ and that's it!! Stupid OrpRick.

Posted by: rachel216 | February 7, 2010 6:34 PM | Report abuse

Apparently for Orbit Gum, in order for it to be a high sticking call, you need to actually impale a guy in the eye socket.

Last time I checked, the Caps didn't whine and b*tch that last Hens PP, which was a blatant non-penalty.

Posted by: MyPostIDisAfake | February 7, 2010 6:37 PM | Report abuse

@MyPostIDisAfake

That's a great name for Orpik, Orbit Gum.

It's the Pens own fault for squandering a 4-1 lead.

Posted by: CapsFan75 | February 7, 2010 6:38 PM | Report abuse

Semin got Gonchar with a high stick as he undressed him in the corner. It was a legit call...but really bad luck. Refs were awful both ways -- but I have to say the Penwhines were treated better than were the Caps. The slash on Schultz was the worst call I have seen in almost 30 years. The ref at center ice made the call. Absurd. But the no call on the Ovechkin board, the call that put us down two men early in the game, the Backstrom misconduct, it was absolutely absurd. I really don't ever want to play the penwhines again because for whatever reason they get more then their fair share of calls. I'd understand if it was against a lesser team, but the lack of respect given to the Capitals is just absolutely absurd. And don't get me wrong - the Caps have taken advantage of bad officiating in their favor this year. It's just ridiculous that the Pens always seem to be the benefactors of uneven officiating.

Posted by: DisgustedinArlington | February 7, 2010 6:40 PM | Report abuse

I'm not surprised that the Pens are complaining after this game, I AM surprised that Orpik was the one doing it. Thought for sure Crosby would have put in his two cents about too many hats on the ice. Orpik needs to take responsibility for his own actions; if Semin is a baby Orpik is too for complaining to mommy. What an idiot.

@ShariLeigh131

Orpik is a complaining hypocrite. He's the guy who keeps complaining that Ovi is dirty and look who's talking.

Plus, he pushed Ovi into the boards on at least one occasion today and was NOT called for a penalty.

Hey Orpik, what comes around, goes around.

@Tarik: you should make sure to give Knuble props for his Gordie Howe Hat Trick.

orchick is a p#ssy. The pinz are p#ssies. The pinz fans & the entire city of pittsturd are p#ssies.

After all the checks from behind, slashing & whining in that game that wasn't called - well their bus needs to crash...into the insane asylum.

Theo was awesome in the game to hold up until the cavalry came.
Is there any nitwits out their who thinks OV isn't the world 's best player?

PS - worst call of the season, the phantom stick break slash on Schultz. But hey the scoreboard pittsturd...scoreboard.

does he know what an idiot he sounds like! buwahhahahaaa.

Posted by: Rocc00 | February 7, 2010 7:25 PM | Report abuse

By the way, if that's how Orprick feels about Semin, then how does he feel about his own teammate Sidney Crosby? The biggest baby of them all. lol. The whole Pens team is a bunch of losers. Why don't they just own up and admit they let the lead slip away? Hmmm... who should they blame? Themselves for letting a three goal lead slip away or blame the refs' call in OT? Of course it's the refs' call.

Posted by: rachel216 | February 7, 2010 7:26 PM | Report abuse

Not only does orchick sound like an idiot - he is an idiot: does he not know the rules? It's exactly his lack of control of his stick that the NHL started cracking on several years ago.

That call gets called 99 out of 100 time witness Semin on Gonchar earlier orchick!

Ordick
Oprick

So far, the Super Bowl is boring compared to the Caps game. zzzzzz....

Posted by: rachel216 | February 7, 2010 8:03 PM | Report abuse

Anyone notice this from Hershey?

"Despite a flat first period, the BEARS rallied from a three-goal deficit to defeat the visiting Wilkes-Barre/Scranton Penguins 5-4 Sunday night. Mathieu Perreault led the HERSHEY offense, notching a hat trick and an assist on the game-winning goal to stretch the team's winning streak to 17 consecutive home games and 10 games overall."

Weird, but great, parallel.

Posted by: ladysuz | February 7, 2010 8:10 PM | Report abuse

yeah the halftime show is more exciting even though Pete Townsend should really call it quits... Roger Daltrey still can sing tho

Posted by: joek443 | February 7, 2010 8:11 PM | Report abuse

rachel216 I don't disagree the Knuble caused the puck to go in by poking Flurey I just don't think he actually touched the puck I still think it just his the backside of Flurey similar to the goal he gave up to Detroit in the finals two years ago. Either way the Caps win so it doesn't matter.

Orpik is a baby how about all the times Crosby does the exact same thing when players don't even touch him. Anyone remember the game againt the Habs a few years ago where he went down on the opening faceoff like he had been speared the refs threw the Habs player out of the game and the replay showed Crosby wasn't even touched? Where was Orpik saying he had no respect for Sid then.

AlexVA Ovechkin didn't get a Gordie Howe hat trick that is a goal, assist, and a fight. He never got a fighting major so he just had a regular hat trick.

Posted by: icehammer97 | February 7, 2010 8:12 PM | Report abuse

The Kid? Screw Orpik. Who cares if he has respect for Semin. He is only slightly less worthless than the idiot Tebow whose mothers inane bs we must suffer through. Lets Go Capitals

I hate that Tebow commercial. I think my life would be perfectly OK if Tebow didn't exist! If the Redskins draft that dude, I swear I'll will find a new team...

From all accounts it seems like Varly was rusty, but that's expected. I'm happy to hear he came out out of the game okay... hopefully he is very close to returning.

ladysuz: What's really weird about the parallel is some of us were calling Perreault "Mini Me" when he was up with the Caps.

Didn't SC and Hershey both win Cups last year (Kelly and Calder)?

Now THAT would be a natural hat trick to take all three Cups.

don't think Tebow will make it to the NFL, based on what he's done at the combines, he's worse than what most people thought as a QB... he'll probably become a motivational speaker, making 6 figures/appearance.

Posted by: joek443 | February 7, 2010 8:33 PM | Report abuse

1. How can the Penguins complain about the officiating when they got most of the breaks?
2. On TV the hit on Semin appeared to be a high stick to the nose.
3. If Semin can barely speak English and rarely tries to speak, how does he cry the whole game? If its in Russian what does it matter, the officials don't know what he's saying....

I don't know if that's THE greatest regular season game the Capitals have ever played but that was a heck of a good hockey game. I probably would be saying that even if the Caps hadn't won, but the OT goal just makes it even better.

I think it is interesting that the post gazette has a guy do a blog about the game and had this to say about the call in OT.

2:34: Ugh. Orpik is called for high sticking Semin. The call is legit. Guerin appears to give Semin some grief for perhaps embellishing it. Adams, Staal and Gonchar.

He also commented on how bad the call on Shultz was. I do read this guys comments because he is about the least bias Pens writer I have found and I can read his stuff and talk to people here in Pittsburgh about hockey without having to suffer through watching all of a Pens game.

for anyone who is interested the link is http://community.post-gazette.com/blogs/emptynetters/default.aspx for today's game.

If anyone wants to watch again, I just noticed the NHL Network is showing at like 4 am and then again sometime during late morning or early afternoon on Monday. I am recording because I want to watch again tomorrow night. Also, the time slot for the rebroadcasts is two hours, so you will get less commercials and probably little or no intermissions. Check your programming because one of the Canadian games this week (can't remember which) also gets a NHLNet rebroadcast the next day.

This should be NHL Net schedule for the next week. Caps-Pitt are on 4 am and then 2 pm, both Monday. Caps-Habs Tuesday game is also rebroadcast on Wed.

Usually these rebroadcasts are from TSN. I am guessing TSN showed the game in Canada, so it will be GREAT to re-watch and have the benfit of different announcers to see if Emrick et al gave us "slanted" coverage.

So, set your recorders. After all, what else is there to do tomorrow night but watch again when you get home from work? Or just stay up and watch at 4 am! Watch it a million times!!!

A two part question -

1. What are the odds Adams gets any "supplementary" discipline from the league for his hit on Ovi? (Maybe "supplementary" is the wrong term, since there was no penalty called during the game.)

2. What would the league have done if the same play occurred but with a Cap pushing Crosby head first into the boards?

For anybody who is interested, the NHL network is replaying Caps v Pens game 2 from last year's playoff right now.

Nice football game today. But not even close to the hockey game.

They are replaying one of the Caps-Pens playoff games now on NHL network.

You know, with this win streak up to 14, the Caps might be as high as 4th in this week's TSN Power Rankings. How exciting.

The others on this thread have pointed out just about everything I would like to say about the no-talent, stick-fouling, cheap-shotting, "shutdown-defenseman"-who-gives-up-three-goals-and-an-assist-to-ovie, whiny little bi*** Brooks Orpik. The only thing I'd like to add is: thank goodness we traded your sorry ass off our team.

Posted by: christiansonm | February 7, 2010 10:45 PM | Report abuse

Orpik was never on this team.

Confusing him with Cooke? We didn't trade him, he signed with them. Confused with Johnson? He signed as a free agent. Confused with Gonchar? He was traded to Boston. Confused with Bourque? He was re-picked up on waivers by us. Confused by Sykora? Sykora doesn't play for the Pens anymore, and it's a different Petr Sykora than the Petr Sykora who played with us.

Don't know who else you could be confused with.

Posted by: richmondphil | February 7, 2010 10:49 PM | Report abuse

Both Orpik and Backes are US Olympians aren't they?

What a disgrace.

I'll root for the US, because I'm an American, but some cats in this group won't get individual support.

Watched the end of that replay of game 2 on NHL network. Seeing the attack by Kunitz on Varlamov again I still don't know why that guy wasn't banned from the sport.

Hey Orpik, eat s*** and die! Whiner! Loser! You're the PERFECT Penguin.

Posted by: CAP-lanta | February 7, 2010 11:16 PM | Report abuse

I'm wondering if Captain Crybaby complained to the refs about all the hats on the ice after OV's HT, like he did in the playoffs... Loser!

Posted by: CAP-lanta | February 7, 2010 11:39 PM | Report abuse

How can something as meaningless as a silly game on skates make me so happy? Orpik and Guerin can eat a bag of [sausages].

Posted by: kevbnyc | February 7, 2010 11:47 PM | Report abuse

Orpik complains that they shouldn't have ended the game that way? The Penguins had six power plays (including a 5v3 for one minute) to the Capitals four power plays.
Maybe he shouldn't have high sticked Semin which the replays conclusively proved he did. What if the Penguins had scored on the phantom slashing penalty on Schultz which the replays conclusively proved didn't happen and was trashed by the NBC guys. Would Orpik be approaching the refs because it wasn't a just result in that scenario. Semin is a crybaby? He is a teammate of Crosby and Malkin who lead the league in whining. Oprik is a moron.

Posted by: croftonpost | February 7, 2010 11:50 PM | Report abuse

The call for the high stick on Semin was much more of a penalty then the one called on us (Schultz) at the 16 minute mark for slashing! Even Schultz's stick was long enough to touch Cooke. I've never seen such a phantom call in my life!

Posted by: pokerface1208 | February 7, 2010 11:54 PM | Report abuse

I think the best thing each Caps fan can do for the Pis*burgh Penguins is to find the stinkiest, moldiest, not fit for even a dog piece of cheese and send it to that team in SE PA to go along with thier whine and whine and whine.

Posted by: critter69 | February 7, 2010 11:58 PM | Report abuse

Forget the reffing. It is what it is although that call on Schultz was ..... well unexplainable. Had we lost the game there that would've been a tough defeat to take.

I think the Pens carried the play through most of the 1st and 2nd periods and got the benefit of most of the calls. Our team is good enough to where we don't need that kind of benefit to cash in.

Our PK has got to get better though. We are in the bottom 1/3 of the league in PK. And that's while facing 4 other teams in our division who aren't even in the playoffs. What's gonna happen when we're facing better teams in the playoffs with much better PP's? I guarantee you the Rangers will NOT score 4 PP goals in 1 game in the playoffs. They'd be doing good to do that in a playoff series!

@writered21

With Backes and Orpik, I'm less motivated to root for the US in hockey than I normally wood.

I'm ready to be called a communist and root for Team Russia. (Then again, I like the Russian cast of characters better this year)

Posted by: CapsFan75 | February 7, 2010 11:59 PM | Report abuse

Orpik has nothing to complain about. His stick caught Semin full across the face - it was just as much a penalty as the highsticking that was called on Semin. And, like usual, the Pens were allowed to get away with penalty after penalty. Orpik is apparently learning from Crosby about how to be the biggest whiner around.

Posted by: timmyv38 | February 7, 2010 11:59 PM | Report abuse

On Orpik. He is the pot who is calling the kettle black.

He is a whiner by complaining.

He is also a dirty player who dared to call Ovi a dirty player.

Posted by: CapsFan75 | February 8, 2010 12:02 AM | Report abuse

pokerface1208 didn't we just go 5 for 6 against the Stanley Cup champions on the PK? Only once since January 18th have the Caps let in more then one power play goal in a game. One thing that is the problem is our PK on the road. At home our PK is actually 4th best at 87.5% but on the road it is 72.6% where only Toronto is worse. The good thing is in the playoffs unless something big happens over the last few months of the season we will have home ice in every series so we will have more home games with our great PK then our road PK.

Posted by: icehammer97 | February 8, 2010 12:11 AM | Report abuse

icehammer - so you're happy with our PK? You feel confident winning a Cup with this PK unit? Killing penalties like we do?

Orpik and Crosby should really go shopping for baby pacifiers together.

but then again, he is probably just fussy because he isn't even a FRACTION of the player that Semin is.

And he succeeds...

Chimera had an awesome goal just last game!

I think, in general, he's been doing great since the trade, and obviously the team is too. He's been more productive than he was in Columbus, and doesn't seem to be making many errors that cause opposition goals or anything. He's willing and able to fight when necessary. He's not a hall-of-famer, and he doesn't have a lot of moves or anything, but he seems fully capable of being a third-liner on a championship team to me.

POSTGAME THOUGHTS:
WHO DAT? WHO DAT? WHO DAT SAY GONNA BEAT DEM CAPS??????

What an exhilarating comeback. This team just never dies. They keep finding a way and the streak lives on.

Kudos to Theodore for standing tall for his team.

Ovechkin - the Great 8 continues to do what he does. There are no words. You can't stop him - even when you cheap shot him.

Brooks Ortoepick is the baby in all of this. Go look at the replays jackass. You made contact and it was crystal clear. The only baby here is you whining about your team losing. Go whine about losing a 4-1 lead than an obvious penalty in overtime.

Resilient group of players that wear the Caps jersey. Oh what a feeling.

An off day for the defense in the beginning but a nice job tightening up down the stretch.

Wow 14 in a row. It's an attempt for 15 in Montreal on Wednesday night.

Again I say - WHO DAT? WHO DAT? WHO DAT SAY GONNA BEAT DEM CAPS?

It's been a two point night.

ICE BREAKERS GOAL SHAKERS.

pokerface1208 At home yes. Like I said we are 4th best at home. What the team and BB needs to do is figure out who we are that good at home and do it one the road. Since we are so successful at home I don't believe that we need to add someone I think we just need to get better on the road. There is no reason why we can not be successful with who we have.

Of the top 16 teams in the NHL, I picked 16 because that is how many make the playoffs, only 9 are currently in the playoffs. So just over half of the teams would make the playoffs. Last year Pittsburgh was only 8th in PK and Detroit came one goal away from winning the Cup and they were 25th in the NHL on the PK. I don't think a teams PK matters as much as some make it seem like it does. I am fine with our team now. We have the best record in the NHL and in this 14 game streak we have beatten the Cup champs once, the runners up once, and since xmas eve has beaten every Eastern Conference playoff team at least once. It is hard not to be happy with a team like that.

Posted by: icehammer97 | February 8, 2010 1:05 AM | Report abuse

I've been absent from here during the whole streak. Got busy at the start of it and then slightly superstitious because I figured I'll keep off until we lose, but I just can't stay quiet anymore. What an insane run this has been! I thought it couldn't get better than our game vs. the Rangers, but today's game was absolutely sick and had the intensity of a game 7 in the playoffs. NBC must've been pleased. You gotta admit that these teams as well as Ovie and Crosby deliver every time. I can't remember a really hyped event in any other sport where the 2 superstars consistently deliver gems and the teams really put on a show. As a Caps fan it was obviously even more exciting for me as we were able to come back from 4-1 down to preserve our winning streak in spectacular fashion.

I do also have to mention the officiating though. It was absolutely atrocious. I tend to do my best and not whine about the refs, but I would've whined had we lost because pretty much every call went against us. The most ridiculous were the following. Non-call on Adams pushing Ovie head first into the boards. Yes, I know he didn't hit him hard, but IMO it was still a dirty play and deserved at least a 2 min penalty. I was incensed when Pittsburgh ended up with a power play as a result of the subsequent fight between Knuble and Adams (which stupid NBC did not show at all for some reason!). Then the ridiculous call that put us down 2 men. I still have no idea what happened because once again NBC didn't bother to show even one replay. From what I saw Crosby received a good hit by Steckel which Guerin didn't like and went after him. Somehow Poti ended up in the box. Lastly, the most unbelievable call was with 4 min left in a tied game when the ref who was far away from the play called a slashing penalty on Schultz just because a Pens player's stick broke! That was just insane! Schultz didn't do anything on that play! I don't understand how a ref who's at center ice can call that when the other ref who was right there didn't. At least they should communicate with each other before making such a ridiculous call that couldn't easily cost us the game.

So yeah kudos to the Caps and Ovie for overcoming a 3 goal deficit and terrible one sided officiating to pull this one off. The Pens really can't possibly complain about the officiating in this game. They got every possible call and non-call (there were more that I didn't mention) until the OT and Orpik's high stick on Semin had to be called because it was blatant. Especially since Semin got called for high sticking Gonchar earlier when he was just trying to stick handle around him.

Lastly, teams should learn not to really piss off Ovie. The Pens went after him tonight and he killed them, both on the scoreboard and physically.

A quote from Pothier "His enthusiasm and his energy has not only wore off on other people in this locker room, but the whole culture of the team. We got two feet of snow and this place is still packed."

Obviously Syd the Kid's (did Orpick give him the nickname?) personality has also become pervasive in penland based on how whiney the whole team and all the fans have become.

My neighbors helped me dig out when they saw how frantic I was. Roads were scary, but it was a fantastic game. All the talk about the Pen's travel problems but no one really mentions that the Caps probably had to dig their ways out. It may have affected them some. I know my arms were hurting

Orpick proved what a prick he really was to me last year when in warmups before a playoff game he smashed his stick against the glass in front of a kid (and I'm talking eight or nine years old) who was waving a Caps sign to scare him. I thought it was a classless move
