Mirrored Visor Not Banned in Russia

Yes, it's another slow news day in Capsland.

I did, however, stumble across this interesting story in the Moscow Times about the challenges and pressures Team Russia faces entering this month's World Championship tournament, which, of course, is being staged on its home turf.

More interesting to me, though, is the picture that accompanies the article. It shows Ovechkin wearing the blue half shield that he wore at the NHL all-star game.

Those who read this blog regularly know I'm obsessed with Ovechkin's mirrored visor. I'm not sure why I'm so obsessed with it, but you've got agree that it does look pretty cool. Which is why I will never understand the NHL's decision to ban its use.

That visor rules. Brodeur needs to shut his trap about it.

Yeah, that visor is wicked. The NHL should concentrate on more important things than what type of visor OV is wearing.

I am expecting nothing but slow news days till the first week of July. Hopefully news coming out of the organization at that point will be exciting enough to make up for all the slow news days during playoffs.

Draft day will be very exciting, both from a Caps perspective and a league wide perspective. Luongo was traded the day before the draft last year I think

breaking news ... I'm told that Ovechkin has ordered a red visor for the WC. No kidding. He also might wear red laces in his skates.

Posted by: Tarik | April 26, 2007 11:42 AM | Report abuse

Yeah, the visor is a perfect example of why the NHL doesn't get it and is mired as a niche sports that really isn't a major sport any longer. That visor is one of the things that made Ovechkin "cool", along with the GOAL. The NHL is trying desperately to market Crosby, who doesn't have much of a personality, while screwing with Ovechkin's marketability by outlawing the visor.

Well, the blue was going to clash with his uniform...

Brodeur complained to the league about OV's visor cause he said he couldn't see OV's eyes, and that made it harder to stop his shots. Well, I thought the new NHL was all about scoring: more goals=more excitement. If that's the case, then they should leave OV alone, and let him wear the visor of his choice.

Tarik Check out the Message Boards. There is a Russian member who posted pics of Ovechkin and he is wearing RED SKATES!! They are sick!!

You don't hear about NFL QB's griping about DB's darkened helmet visors - the NHL needs OV's 'radical' personality to grab hold of the younger fans. He definitely connects better than Crosby with the younger crowd.

You got to admit, Ovie's got a sense of style. Not sure if it's a good sense, but it's definitely there. Too bad the NHL doesn't agree.

if crosby wore one they would be mandated

Speaking of Crosby... did you see Crosby's visor last week during the playoffs? It looked like you could stick a hand through the gap between it and his helmet (surely his equipment manager could get one that fits his lid better).

That said, I think the colored visors should be allowed. Imagine if all the Caps played with a colored visor that matched their new uni's...sweet!

I think Comebackkono3 is talking about this picture: http://img138.imageshack.us/img138/6404/dsc4888tz9.jpg

Only time where you can commend "color coordination" and "hockey" in the same sentence.

looks like a combo of robocop and a nascar. whats with all the advertising. and i thought that the visors werent specifically banned, just suggested that players not wear them.

James, thanks so much for including the photo! It looks like Ovie's getting ready to battle space aliens.

My husband loves hockey, and watching Ovie play has made me a fan, too. He's 2 cool 4 words.

pjob - That's because tinted visors are illegal in the NFL unless you have a medical waiver.

Posted by: tallbear | April 26, 2007 1:58 PM | Report abuse

Wow, that is a really nice set of colors of Ovy in that pic. The red skates with the camaflage patteren looks awesome.

I think a lineup where everyone had a tinted visor would look kind of cool, though not being able to see a player's eyes could definately make for some major changes in gameply...

Ovechkin could very well be the only NHL'er with the balls to step out on the ice looking like that.

The tape job around his legs are a trip.
Look for him to star in his own show...

They should design a colored sheild for the lower half of Crosby's helmet so we don't have to see him whine every 5 minutes.

Posted by: obxpalma | April 26, 2007 5:26 PM | Report abuse

I love the skates, very hip. Ovechkin looks like Master Chief from Halo. Which is about right. Wow, that would be cool, if you could replace Master Chief with Ovechkin and change the aliens into penguins (the team, not the animals; that would screw kids up).

Having seen other Ovie outfits, I think the guy is color blind though. i hope so.

Is OV auditioning for a revised role of Red Power Ranger?? Or maybe this is what the Red Power Ranger would look like on skates!

Posted by: pjob | April 27, 2007 1:36 PM | Report abuse

Those red skates will be awesome next year. I'm so pumped for red away jerseys its not even funny
