Ovechkin's Crazy Goal
Okay, for everyone who's not near a television here is Alex Ovechkin's goal from the first period against the Canadiens that tied the game at 1-1. I won't break this down, the play speaks for itself. Could it be "The Goal" part two?

Uh - how was that not holding on feds in the corner? TSN zoomed right in on it. You could CLEARLY see the stick and the hand impeding feds progress - awful.

I'd be lying if I didn't say I used virtually the exact same move in rec hockey a couple of years ago. The difference was that the mook is not an NHL starter and I screwed up my knee slamming it into the ice as I rolled in front of the goal. (See Not Ovie!)

Been sick so was just watching the game chilling. Quick thoughts, Montreal had some real fluky goals tonight made their PP look way better than it is. Don't know why Joe B didn't see Erskine's stick tipped up their 2nd goal over Theo. I think on his best nights Theo stops the 1st and 3rd goals. I'll give him one thing though he is a HUGE improvement over what we've had before when it comes to the shootout.
Ovie's goal was ridiculous, Backie had a strong game. I really though Semin was going to get one tonight, guess he made up for it in the shootout. Flash and Fehr had strong games and Fed just does whatever we need. I think this is a top 2 team when we're able to pull out games like this when the other team is getting all the bounces.
Also I know there probably wasn't anything clear cut but do we EVER get a PP in the 3rd or OT?

Btw reading through the posts first time tonight. Rachel...if there is one thing you can never do with this team is lose faith early in a game. I don't care if we're down 2 with under 3 to play this team can do it. Hell I remember that Minn game we were down 4-0 with something like under 6 min to play and we made it 4-3. The Caps will find a way. Doubt us pregame, NOT during it ;)

I agree with you, that is a problem.
CTCapsPhan,
You know I don't worry so much about the top teams as much as say Florida. I don't know why, statistically it shouldn't happen, but the Caps seem to have a harder time with teams they should beat. It is just a feeling on my part.
Anyway, good win tonight. I am enjoying the ride until it ends.

I hear what you are saying, but I think the Caps have learned how to play a different game in the playoffs and even the Panthers don't concern me. Having said that, nothing is a given either.
Caps fought through a lot tonight to win a game and they seem to keep gaining more and more confidence.
Being a 30 year fan of the team, I have seen many times when they would have lost this type of game. This year just seems to be different.
I will be in section 108 against the Panthers on March 1st and I hope I don't eat my words. :)

Yeah, they could get knocked out.
They could also ride the magic of the VC and the hot sticks of Ovie, Green, Fehr and whoever is next, as well as Jose and maybe even babyface (Neuvirth) and could go deep into the playoffs and even farther than that. The one thing we have learned is to not bet against them.
How can you doubt a team that can score on their butts, for goodness sakes?

I'd give you credit for calling it Puckguru, but it was not for defensive purposes ;). When you're down a goal in the 3rd it's hard not to take advantage of being able in a pinch to throw him out there with Poti or better yet Green to essentially have your pp unit on the ice.

4 through 8 are really bunched up in the east.
here's to hoping carolina can climb a spot and philly falls flat on their faces. briere and crysby can go on double dates when the season ends - although i'm not sure any other couples would want to join them.

My playoff picks in the East:
1. Boston
2. Washington
3. New Jersey/Philly
4. Philly/New Jersey
5. Florida/Montreal
6. Montreal/Florida
7. Buffalo
8. Pittsburgh
I somehow think Montreal will right the ship. I think the Rangers will go down in flames. I really think Carolina will overtake the Rangers as well but I think the Pens have just enough to squeak in as the #8 seed at the wire. Florida is for real and if they get the #5 seed and face off against NJ in the first round I think they could steal it.

That goal was just... Oh my GOD wow! Watching it live, and then half a dozen times on the jumbotron at the Phone Booth? Wow, nothing compares! That was just SICK! The setup, the slide, the finish... nobody can play 'em like Alexander Ovechkin!
And Theodore, in the shootout? Holy Hand Grenade of Antioch, Batman! MY goal, and you can't play here. WHAM! Very well-played! On his good nights, as someone said, he has two of the three goals that got past him, but he is playing WORLDS better than he did before the "meltdown and reformation," so to speak. WORLDS better! NO-WAY, JOSE!
Defensively speaking, Schultz was very solid out there tonight. Positionally sound for the most part, and he was the only one of our blueliners pushing guys out of the crease...
Ovechkin about gave me a heart attack when he stopped a shot with his knee, though... I didn't see it, just saw him limping around after... but dang. That boy needs to wear more padding or something, since he does insist on playing hard with his body.
Semin had some great passes tonight, and a couple of really pretty scoring chances. Backstrom's goal in regulation, and both goals in the shootout were things of beauty. :-)
Today started off really very badly for me - I got RIFed at work, and I'm finding myself on the job market, then I go to the game, and the guys behind me are swearing a blue streak and really getting offensive about it, and then I got a beer sloshed down my back.
But the win - and that GOAL - does wonders for my mood. LET'S GO, CAPS!!! :-)
THAT was some hockey!

Ovechkin made 2.5 special plays in about three seconds. He's a minor deity and that's that.
Backstrom looked like a hardhat finalist to me. He was strong around the puck and his SO goal was slick, simple, killer.
Theodore was Big when they needed it.
Nylander: It's Swedish for 'giveaway'.
Nice to spread out the scoring, play 35 minutes of meh, and get 2 for it.
Semin's getting four points in the next two games.

@ DavetheCapsfan,
Thanks for the backhanded compliment, but you've missed the whole point entirely. What I've been saying all along ( Maybe I didn't make myself clear ) is that Fedorov is their best ALL AROUND DEFENSEMEN. For my $$$ he's just as dangerous offensively as Mike Green. But, from a DEFENSIVE standpoint, he far outshines Green, Poti, or any other Caps' Dman you want to mention. He's a two - way threat.
I'm still firm in my belief that, come playoff time, you'll see him playing defense almost exclusively. I know that's what I'd do. In a heart beat! No question. And, that decision would have absolutely nothing to do with whether or not Michael Nylander was still on the team, or not. --- Although, obviously I pray he is not. Which is something else I've been harping on since we were eliminated by Philly last April. The 2nd half of last season proved conclusively that we are a better team WITHOUT Nylander, than with him. This season has simply RECONFIRMED that fact.

*dies* great game! ovie needs to be bronzed. he's just....wow. =)
could we possibly lay off semin a little, eh? the guy was going all over tonight! i'm honestly surprised he only got called on one infraction. there was more than a little bit of reaching with the ol' stick going on, and not just on his part. you can sense the frustration in semin because he's not doing as well as he'd like to be doing. and making him wait that long to begin the shootout was just plain torture.
someone needs to frisk crosby for a caps voodoo doll, probably wearing a 28 jersey.
or maybe just fix the bleeping ice. if our guys can skate circles around the opposition on this slush, imagine what they could do on a completely-frozen rut-free surface.

We take so many penalties and can't kill them off, we won't go far in the playoffs cause we can't stay out of the box and we can't kill, and it's ALWAYS semin that's in the box when the opponent scores, when will he ever learn? never.

Sadly, it seems Semin's goal in the shootout is enough to quiet you down. What bothers me most is that people are quick to judge Semin, like he intentionally goes out there to make those penalties. He doesn't. So let's not be quick to throw in the towel just because one of OUR players makes a mistake. Geez, people, chill out. Grab a beer. Take a walk or somethin'.

Nylander is also Swedish for "sets up the game-winning goal against Detroit but for some reason this career playmaker is stuck playing on the grinders line all year"
Also means
"one of only three players (Laich and Semin) on the team with more penalties drawn while he's on the ice than the Caps take while he's on the ice"
or
"in the past 4 games in which he plays more than 16 minutes, he has 1 goal, 3 assists, and is a +4, but people seem to think that he is getting little ice time because of his performance"
By the way, it was the shift and subsequent line change by Nylander and Laich that led to OV being able to score that amazing goal in the first.
