Ovechkin's New Toy

Alex Ovechkin's collection of sweet rides just got even sweeter.

Surrounded by a small crowd of fans and teammates outside KCI this morning was Ovechkin's newest toy: a brand-new, 200-mph Mercedes SL65 AMG Black Series. Its price tag is about $250,000, and only 350 are expected to be produced worldwide.

Ovechkin now owns three AMGs (one of which is modded), a Porsche Cayenne GTS and a souped-up BMW M6 (it's in Russia).

Mike "Lambo-Greenie" Green's got a Lamborghini and Sergei Fedorov's got a Maserati and a Ferrari. But Ovechkin's collection of hot sports cars is unmatched around here, and the SL65 tops the list. You could put this thing on a NASCAR track and it would win any race, hands down.

It also makes the Caps' parking lot arguably the best in the NHL (I'm thinking it also might rival the Wizards').

Any bumper stickers on that car??

Was it Schultz that had a beat up old truck or was that someone else?

Posted by: koalatek | March 27, 2009 1:06 PM | Report abuse

I'd much rather have a 360 Modena.

Posted by: richmondphil | March 27, 2009 1:07 PM | Report abuse

AMG Black, not SLR Black, my bad, either way, I called it! :)

Pics?

Posted by: cupcrzy | March 27, 2009 1:07 PM | Report abuse

You know - as cool as that is, these guys have to know that they're not going to be playing forever and that their careers will end far earlier than ours will. If they don't get jobs coaching or what have you, what will they do? And how long will it take them to find other work? What will keep them in money in the meantime? Maybe they ought to be putting some of this aside for a rainy day.

I know, I'm the little stormcloud. But ... think about it.

That car is crap.

Ovie should metro to games.

@Kittypawz:

All true, but given the amount of money that Ovechkin makes, he can probably afford to buy these cars AND save a little as well.

Cayenne GTS? Isn't the Turbo S the fastest? And the X5/X6 ///M is being unveiled in April.

Posted by: saintex | March 27, 2009 1:13 PM | Report abuse

kitty,
ovie's salary from the caps is like $10M/year for the next 13 years. a $250K car is less than 3% of his one year salary. thats like someone making $100K per year spending $3K on a car. that doesnt take into consideration his endorsement money (hair cuttery pays BIG). i think ovie will be ok, especially since he doesnt have to split it with an agent.

Posted by: dcsportsfan1 | March 27, 2009 1:15 PM | Report abuse

this is the kind of stuff that i find annoying. i mean there is obviously nothing important to blog about this time of year. but, i suppose when you are young and loaded you don't see better things to do with your money. who cares!!

Posted by: doughless | March 27, 2009 1:15 PM | Report abuse

It would be interesting to hear what cars all the players drive since we're on topic. I know Brash has a Lambo too... Brads has a Saturn, and Johnny has a Jag.

Posted by: rh71 | March 27, 2009 1:15 PM | Report abuse

btw, where's our resident BMW salesman to clue on in on how much that M6 might have cost ovie?

Posted by: dcsportsfan1 | March 27, 2009 1:16 PM | Report abuse

Here's hoping Ovi's new car provides some incentive for him to score a few goals tonight. Otherwise, I hear a wonk-wonk-wonk for him buying a pretty nifty car today and not getting us a few goals. *crosses fingers* Over 3 goal game tonight, I hope. No OT please or SO.

SL65 , not S65

Posted by: Bagher | March 27, 2009 1:21 PM | Report abuse

Shoot, if you play at the league minimum, you're making $475 or $485 K.

I don't think any player who doesn't gamble all of their money away is going to worry too much about post career finances.

COLUMBUS, Ohio -- Police say a passionate hockey fan made physical threats against the Columbus Blue Jackets in a series of phone calls to the team's arena during a game.

Columbus Police Sgt. Rick Weiner says 52-year-old Peter Stenzel was arrested Thursday and charged with inducing panic for threatening physical harm against the team during its win over the Calgary Flames.

Weiner says police traced the phone calls to Stenzel's Columbus home, where they found him wearing a Flames T-shirt. Police would not say if specific players were targeted or what the threats entailed.

Stenzel was being held at the Franklin County Jail pending a Saturday court hearing.

Blue Jackets spokesman Todd Sharrock says the team will not comment on security matters.

yeah my guess is ovie can afford to basically buy whatever he wants.

regarding schultz's car...i can see him as one of the dorks who rides a bike with rearview mirrors on it and signals when he is turning

Posted by: _stevo | March 27, 2009 1:29 PM | Report abuse

your high ticket prices hard at work. I'm with SA on this one - it would be nice to see more blog posts on charity work and donations rather than car collections. I'd rather hear that Ovie is driving a dirty, messed up Subaru Outback to practice after a morning at the lake or something than hear that he pays someone to keep six cars clean.

I like the Kenny Dryden approach - develop skills while you're playing so that you can fall back on something should your marketability in the front office or coaching staff flounder. That's not a pick on Ovie, that's a pick on all of the players.

And let's see work with DC nonprofits!

Did I get that right Lee?

Kitty,
You got to be joking right? He's making well over $10m a year once you figure in endoresments and you're worried if he'll be able to pay the heating bills when he's 50? Come on. If you were his age/making his money would you cycle to practice?

Part of the great thing about a blog is the insight into things about the players on and off the ice...I really enjoy the funny info on DC Sports Blog and I always appreciate glimpses into the lives of my favorite players from Tarik!

The Caps are pretty smart with their money. No outrageous bar tabs or crazy bling! Ovie's M6 is white with red leather interior, it was in VA for a little while. I guess he got rid of the Range Rover, right? Semin drives an AMG too...Brash has a Lambo and a tricked out Escalade with ornate rims. Anyone know what Nicky drives?

c'mon guys. ovie is GUARNATEED to make $120M over the next 13 years. he can afford some nice cars and people to look after them. i dont think he needs to get a law degree in case the whole hockey think doesn't work out. ken dryden probably made less than $500K his whole career. he had to find other things to do.

if you dont like athletes making tons of dough, don't but tickets, hats, jerseys, etc.

ovie does tons of charity work, particularly w/ childrens hospital and community events.

I actually work for the company that handles the marketing and event planning for BMW NA and the M6 (depending on what mods OV has done) starts at about 100 large. It has 500 hp and it's an absolute beast.

I think the 8/9 million a year for the next 13 years, that Ovie will make, will be enough for him to not worry about a college education or obtaining a trade. Especially if he retires in Russia or somewhere else where money goes much further.

Posted by: ejohnsto | March 27, 2009 1:43 PM | Report abuse

you guys are crazy.

the most expensive car in the world would only be about 1/6th of the money he makes in one year just by playing hockey. Plus the millions for endorsements. he has nothing to worry about, unless he starts gambling or something.

Speaking of Leeguru, I thought he hooked you up with a shot at a camera Tarik. That would have been handy to show off Ovi's new toy no? Anything "Black Series" is an amazing machine no doubt, AMG and Mercedes know their stuff.

Ovie never has to worry about making money. If somebody handed you 6 mil after taxes, you could live a comfortable life at 100,000$/year for the next 60 years. Money is an abstract thought to professional athletes

I try not to judge, because it doesn't hurt anyone, but I don't care too much about material things. I like nice stuff and nice food butmodt things aren't worth the price asked. Cars, or anything that immediately lose value (obviously not cars of such limited production as Pvies of course) are fools games to me. Just brainwash. Then I see the commercials with kids dying around the world, Africa, genocide, war, and I'm glad suddenly that I don't care about all that meaningless, material crap ( or celebrity gossip, fads, etc). Life needs more perspective, not more distractions. Just a thought I had while perusing the news. Sorry to be a downer. I'm pretty sure those AIG &%£€s are hooked on "stuff".

I totally agree with this statement, and that is why I, a former Caps season-ticket holder, have been to fewer than five games in both D.C. and Philly since the 1994 lockout. (I lived in D.C. until five years ago.)

At some point, a car can cost so much that the idea that it is for transportation is flat out ridiculous. The people who defend Ovechkin are letting their hockey sense run riot over their common sense.

Even sports heroes can be stupid.

"Who here honestly thinks Ovie *won't* be in hockey when he retires? He won't need to find anything else."

I would die of laughter if Ovi ended up replacing Cherry on "Coaches Corner". *snicker*

I loathe people who choose to judge others based on how they spend their money. Ovi can do whatever the eff he wants because guess what? It's his money. The minute you hand over the cash/the credit card/mail out the check for those season tickets or that game ticket, you lose whatever control you had on your money and have no real say in how that money is spent. As it's been repeatedly stated, if you don't want Ovi or the guys to be able to afford a frivolous purchase like another car, then don't buy a ticket. Don't pay for cable to watch the game. Don't buy a jersey ro another souvenir item. Simple enough.

In the meantime, *yawn* Ovi buys a new car. Big whoop. I'm surprised we're spending time with this mindnumbing late-breaking "news" item. Wear your seatbelt please, Ovi! =)

For a sobering look at how millionaire athletes go broke--and quite often, too--read this from last week's SI:

http://vault.sportsillustrated.cnn.com/vault/article/magazine/MAG1153364/index.htm

Hockey players are notably absent from this story, but it is unbelievable how clueless many athletes are about their own finances.

Posted by: slipstream1 | March 27, 2009 4:43 PM | Report abuse

Tarik! The last thing that you need to be writing about is the cars that these guys own. God knows that hockey has had a horrible history of high-speed wrecks or wrecks where passengers or other drivers have been killed. My biggest fear is that one of these kids is going to wrap one of these ridiculous cars around a pole at 2 am and be paralyzed or killed. Then you will be writing a different kind of story.

Posted by: MKadyman | March 27, 2009 4:47 PM | Report abuse

Posted by: washingtonpost31 | March 27, 2009 4:53 PM | Report abuse

Yes. What about the children? In this case, the children are 21 to 25 and will do whatever they want, regardless of who writes about it.

Tarik, thanks for writing about something that many of us would secretly love to be able to do, dare I say more than play in the NHL (It's certainly more attainable, anyway).

Posted by: ChaosRogue | March 27, 2009 4:56 PM | Report abuse

Yes 31 I do remember that and more than a few more. There are a few in graveyards and a guy in a wheelchair. There is no reason in the world why a 23 year old needs to own a car that will go 200 mph.

Please spare me the lecture that Ovechkin is going to obey the speed limit. He doesn't.
