Open thread: Capitals at Flyers

By Washington Post Sports Editors

logologo Finding the net early will once again be key for the Washington Capitals (25-14-7) tonight when they visit the Eastern Conference-leading Philadelphia Flyers (29-11-5), who boast scoring threats on three different lines.

Faceoff: 7 p.m., Wells Fargo Center; TV: CSN; Radio: 1500 AM

Update: 6:38 p.m.
The Caps reassigned Andrew Gordon to Hershey this afternoon and he is not on the active roster for tonight's game. Meanwhile, Tyler Sloan was injured during his conditioning stint in Hershey and has been placed on injured reserve.

Based on warm-up here's what the lineup should look like against the Flyers:

Forwards
Ovechkin-Johansson-Laich
Chimera-Backstrom-Knuble
Hendricks-Perreault-B.Gordon
King-Steckel-Beagle

Defense
Schultz-Green
Alzner-Carlson
Erskine-Hannan

Goal
Neuvirth
Varlamov

Scratches: Eric Fehr (shoulder) and Tom Poti (lower body).

5-2 Caps win with a couple of PP goals from Ovie & Backstrom.

Flyers gave their GM a three-year extension. When does GMGM's contract expires?

Stuck at work. Go Caps!!
A win is a win and we need this win.

6-2 Flyers. Caps' D + Goaltending is far too inconsistent, and they probably won't ever win the Cup in this current era.

GO FLYERS

The clock is ticking on bumbling Bruce Boudreau. Nothing like relying on D.J. King to turn your team around. LOL.

This is going to have to be a serious grind game.

That lineup isnt scaring anyone!

@sgm3

All we're asking is that guys play to their talent level, and hustle. Everyone on this site was happy with the effort in "The Classic" and the last Flyers game.

I know when guys are "mailing it in". Don't you ?

They want a fast start, that means we will be down 1-0 within 2 minutes.

On Andrew Gordon, he does have a days issue but it is not tomorrow like that 10 game mark is his next game.

Forechecking clinic by Philly just now... forcing turnovers and creating Grade A scoring chances.

It'd be nice if any of our lines were even slightly above average on the forecheck.

Posted by: LloydChristmas | January 18, 2011 8:11 PM | Report abuse

Skate the puck to center ice, then:

A. dump it in and wait for the Flyers to come again.

B. attempt to carry it in, promptly turn it over, and wait for the Flyers to come again.

This sucks.

Posted by: NickG32 | January 18, 2011 8:12 PM | Report abuse

They said Nuevy didnt look right in warmups, so Varlys in.

Koken was in the pre-game show. Looked ok to me.

Posted by: wtf_e_fehr | January 18, 2011 8:12 PM | Report abuse

@fanzee71 My point is that if he can't even play 5-6 minutes a game he is a waste of a roster space and should be just let go. I know there are a few here who bleed for the guy but his is nothing more then a side show designed to distract from the poor play of the team.

Posted by: icehammer97 | January 18, 2011 8:14 PM | Report abuse

It's embarrassing how much better Holmgren has done with his roster construction than McPhee.

McPhee should be ashamed but you'll just keep hearing him pat himself on his back every chance he gets.

How come their skill guys and checking/energy lines all are better at that than us?

Posted by: tmac2yao | January 18, 2011 8:22 PM | Report abuse

Nothing Varly can do when the defense is standing around watching Giroux take a shot, get a rebound, and score.

This is beyond pathetic. When is someone going to do something other than talk about what's wrong?

Posted by: NickG32 | January 18, 2011 8:22 PM | Report abuse

Laughlin needs to stop characterizing us as a puck possession team.

We're a one-and-done rush team that rarely sustains pressure in the o-zone and spends too much time in our own end.

Posted by: tmac2yao | January 18, 2011 8:24 PM | Report abuse

icehammer, I agree with you. I was just saying the stat you quoted isn't surprising to me.

Some people love guys like DJK because they just love to see the fights. The get off on it. Then there are the others who believe the NHL mythology that states you have to have someone like that in your line up or you'll be too soft to win.

I don't subscribe to either of those. I'm with you. If that's all he's good for, he's a waste who will just force our other forwards into picking up more ice time.

Posted by: fanzee71 | January 18, 2011 8:24 PM | Report abuse

And Schultz is The Suck... should've traded high and his big, slow, soft ass.

Posted by: tmac2yao | January 18, 2011 8:25 PM | Report abuse

This must be the part of the full 60 minutes that they don't play. I trust they'll try real hard to catch up in the last 10 of the third, unless they just give up instead.

It's easy to control the boards when only one team is willing to go to them.

Posted by: jbardzel | January 18, 2011 8:26 PM | Report abuse

OV is clearly a defensive liability. When OV is out there, they have 4 guys playing defense. One legit cup contender versus a chump led pretender. Need a coach who can get this team to play. BigBaby is such a LOSER!!!

Can the Caps clear their zone? The Flyers are cycling at will. TMAC -- u r right, one shot and done. Typically off target, off the glass, and a rush up the other way. Flyers have a rush, miss, but get the rebound and cycle. The Caps have enough talent to play a cycle game, but the top players are not held to a standard by the LOSER BigBaby. Time for a change.

"Laughlin needs to stop characterizing us as a puck possession team.

We're a one-and-done rush team that rarely sustains pressure in the o-zone and spends too much time in our own end."

We USED to be a puck possession team, but not anymore. It seems as though we are playing "hot potato" with the puck. Nobody seems to want the puck, and our guys seem to panic with it. The OV pass - I'm not sure he even saw stone hands Chimmer at the side of the net. I think he just threw it there...

I'm getting very frustrated watching this team this year. I'm not going to be surprised if we don't even make the post season... I REALLY hate to say that, but it's my gut feeling.

It's a crying shame, but nothing seems to have been done to make this team any better from last year. Someone has to be held accountable. Like I've said before, I like BB, but I think his message has been lost on these guys. They need someone to crack the whip and scratch some under-achievers - among other things. Someone needs to hold everyone in this lineup to a higher standard. What's happening lately just isn't going to cut it going forward.

Random thoughts while waiting for something better than MaJo has a great "final stride."

1) The Raiders it says on the screen have hired Hue Jackson. They couldn't afford a vivid color?

2) Mid-80s here today. Too bad I'm sick.

3) Jason "Hands of Stone" Chimera on the 1st line? You get what you pay for.

4) The Caps about 5 mins ago iced the puck to avoid being forechecked. Ugly.

5) The following combos have been announced by BB:

a) Minneapolis will be paired with Des Moines and St. Paul will skate with Iowa City.

a) Moe and Larry will be performing as part of "Laurel and the Two Stooges."

c) Sonny & Cher are being put back together as 3rd pair D even though Sonny has been pretty much a pylon for quite awhile.

can anyone answer why Erskine and Hannon are the pair playing against their top line? Never thought I would agree with the posts about Gabby but I am starting to wonder if he is the issue. Forget the new system it is not working go back to what the team was built for..

A team with this much offensive talent should not be last in the league in first period goals. It should not take this much talent 2-3 periods to start playing. I blame a coach that cannot motivate his players and a captain who also cannot accomplish the same.

Posted by: JIMALLCAPS2 | January 18, 2011 8:39 PM | Report abuse

bb is the best coach in the NHL his system is flawless

Posted by: captainobvious | January 18, 2011 8:40 PM | Report abuse

Posted by: LloydChristmas | January 18, 2011 8:41 PM | Report abuse

Come on gang, let's look at the positives:

We're really good at waving our sticks at opposing players as they fly past us.

We're good at giving up odd-man rushes.

We're good at leaving opposing players alone in front of our net.

We're good at making sure all breakout passes either go directly to the opposing team or no where close to a breaking forward.

And most of all we're really good and not playing a game from start to finish.

So look at the positives, we have so much to look forward to in our future!

That shot of BB on the bench man, he looked LOST!

Posted by: natresgroup | January 18, 2011 8:41 PM | Report abuse

only way Ted does anything about GMGM or BB is if the so called sell outs end and he can't sell the $100 eagle nest seats

Posted by: callejo1 | January 18, 2011 8:42 PM | Report abuse

This Caps team just isn't as talented as the Flyers. I know some won't agree, but the lineups simply aren't comparable. Not sure one or two moves at the trade deadline can really make that much difference in the Caps fortunes. The team, due to injuries and no major offseason additions, just isn't as solid as the last 2 seasons. Add to that the low production of Ovechkin and Backstrom, and this just isn't looking like "the" year.

Posted by: kcbrichmond | January 18, 2011 8:42 PM | Report abuse

...you forgot that we're good at not scoring in 1st, 2nd, and sometimes 3rd periods.

Posted by: LloydChristmas | January 18, 2011 8:43 PM | Report abuse

This team is done. Ted needs to get rid of BB and GMGM with a real coach and GM and have them gut the roster for draft picks and prospects and start the rebuild all over again.

It is clear these guys cannot win so why waster anymore time. There's no point "retooling" because these guys do not have what it takes to ever win anything.

It might take 3 more years of rebuilding, but it will be worth it.

Gut the team now!!!!!!

Posted by: sgm3 | January 18, 2011 8:43 PM | Report abuse

our passing sucks, our intensity sucks, our forechecking sucks, our backchecking sucks. it isnt that the bounces aren't going our way, we are not generating scoring opportunities. they look like they have so much time while we have none.

Posted by: JIMALLCAPS2

This much offensive talent??

Even when Semin is in there, are offensive talent is overrated.

BB's run 'n gun system had more to do with our high scoring output than the skill or depth of talent.

I always remember watching to a Buffalo game last season (not against the Caps) and hearing the announcer talk about how the team sacrifices offense to play better defense.

Boudreau's high-risk/high-reward style of play was fun to watch but it's not the right way to play. It was very much akin to the Phoenix Suns of the NBA in the sense that it was flashy and fun to watch but it wasn't going to take you anywhere in the playoffs.

Defense first is the right philosophy but we don't have the personnel to be effective at it and it also takes a long time to learn to play the right way in all 3 zones. BB's tenure has set this team back and as long as McPhee is making the coaching/personnel decisions, we're going nowhere in the cap era.

This is the most talent one team can legally have in their lineup.

Posted by: LloydChristmas | January 18, 2011 8:51 PM | Report abuse

We need some POISE with the puck. Like I said, hot potato.

I'm laughing at Tom's post.

Defense is good when you have the lead.

One makes their own luck. So SOMETIMES bounces don't go your way, but you have to WORK HARD through the perceived "bad luck".

You must make the goalie make some saves in order to score. Pros shouldn't shoot wide this much.

Rang another off the post. Must be bad luck again.

Stop trying to be pretty and get some shots and bodies to the net!

I am afraid that the folks on here are correct. Flyers are a better team. I do like the trade Holgren for Mcphee. The idea of trading Green is silly though. He has not been the problem. In fact the Caps D has been pretty good this year. We can not score and our top six forwards do not look very good. Although I think MJ is going to be a fine player.

Ovie-Schmovie. Ovie, my favorite player in the whole world, looks just as lost as everyone else on the offense. This is my theory. The new "defense-oriented" system has taken the wind out of the offense's sails. They just have not found a new role and identity in this new system. Either this is a natural transition and they will adapt and become serious Stanley Cup contenders, or the team will continue to run on half of its cylinders, proving that this is NOT the right system for this team. Anyone agrees.

This game serves as a wonderful example of the differences between a professional hockey team and whatever the hell it is that we're doing out there.

They made an interesting reference, a year ago was one of Laviolette's first games as PHI coach. We murdered them. A year went by and we flamed out in the first round while they went to game 6 of the Stanley cup finals.

Literally the only difference between these teams and those that met a year ago is a year for PHI under Laviolette's system. Shoot, that and this PHI team doesn't even have Chris Pronger.

They have more skill, toughness and depth.

I think the game got almost too easy for them and they let up or maybe Laughlin was right and the road fatigue set in.

As soon as they gave up the lead, they turned it up and completely dominated the last several minutes. We were pinned in our end constantly.

Lucky loser point.

I mean that BB doesn't teach a complete game and that we have to unlearn some of the bad habits of his high-risk, high-reward, one-way coaching philosophy. We're trying to learn to play the right way now, which is defense first and doing the right things in all 3 zones, but it's not easy to make that adjustment and becoming a good defensive and offensive team.

Regardless of Hanlon's shortcomings, Boudreau also has his that were being masked by the high-risk/high-reward crap paying off and exciting the fanbase, even though it wasn't a sustainable, playoff-caliber brand of hockey.

Well, we've seen the Canucks and the Flyers and the comparisons with the Caps are not favorable, as Captain Obvious would say. It's not time to write off the season yet, but if there are no signs of life by mid-February then it may be time for the Caps to become trade deadline sellers rather than buyers.

Not sure that that is obvious or correct.

I'd lean toward Philly getting complacent and/or fatigued from the road trip as Laughlin suggested and then deciding to take it up a notch.

You can call it the Caps disappearing but what it may have actually been was Philly reappearing. That may sound like the same thing but my point is that it may have been less the Caps playing worse than Philly just playing better.

Posted by: tmac2yao | January 18, 2011 9:45 PM | Report abuse

This team does just enough to keep BB from getting fired.
I'm not so sure the Caps came alive in the 3rd, as much as the Flyers started coasting. After the tying goal, the Flyers turned it back on and put away the lesser team.
These Caps are frustrating to watch, and may cause alcoholism.

This team is done. Ted needs to get rid of BB and GMGM and replace them with a real coach and real GM. Then have those guys gut this roster of losers for draft picks and prospects and start the rebuild all over again.

It is clear these guys cannot win so why waste anymore time. There's no point "retooling" because these guys do not have what it takes to ever win anything.

It might take 3 more years of rebuilding, but it will be worth it.

The players are partly to blame, no doubt, but I'm a firm believer that that kind of thing is a lot more of a top-down phenomenon than a bottom-up one. It's something that comes with a culture of commitment to winning and playing good hockey.

It starts at the top, IMHO. Also I think you can motivate without yelling. I think that's another part of BB's problem, he doesn't know how to communicate without yelling or cursing. I think the fact that for BB every other word is an F-Bomb is a lot of the reason why the players have tuned him out.

I think that reposting fire BB and GMGM is a waste. Nothing is going to happen to the end of the season. Even though, you guys are tired of BB. I believe Leonsis has a lot of professional respect for BB and wouldn't fire him (if he fires him at all) until the end of the season. It's the least he would do for the coach who has an overall winning record with the team.

I have been saying this since April and it just looks more prescient now: the Caps had to make a coaching change after the MTL series. It sounds crazy to fire a coach after a few decent regular seasons (in a terrible division), but that is what teams that are committed to moving forward do as soon as they realize their current leadership has taken them as far as they can go (Marty Schottenheimer was fired in San Diego after a 14-2 regular season; Michel Therrien was fired in Pittsburgh after taking the Pens to the Stanley Cup Finals).

The Caps will simply never shake the taste of last spring's ultimate choke job until they purge the leadership that watched it happen (and scoffed disdainfully when hockey experts suggested that the style was flawed).

@ VTDuffman

About the yelling thing... did you actually see BB "yell" on 24/7? No, he didn't. It almost seemed like a manufactured speech. No passion. I could be wrong but that's what I saw. Now maybe they need a coach who will go toe to toe with the "stars" and demand that they do what he says or they don't play. They need Mike Keenan. They don't need the Powder Puff Girls... They are NOT COMPETING for what they should feel is rightfully theirs - VICTORY. There is almost no passion in that locker room. They need a leader or two that WILL NOT ACCEPT mediocrity. They have a couple guys like that. The rest of them seem to be happy just to cash a paycheck or "mail it in".

The expectations were high. Now where are they? I keep saying I like BB, but I truly don't think at this stage that he is the guy to get us to the promised land...

Remember, playoff hockey is a whole different ballgame. The Caps aren't proving that they are ready to move on from T-ball IMO.

The way we are going, we really just may not even make the playoffs. That would be ridiculous...

Not much heart. Not much guts. ZERO killer instinct. I'm very disappointed at what I am seeing from this team of talented professionals...

I think it's an important distinction that it was Philly picking it up at the end as opposed to the Caps letting down. One implies that the Caps could have done something about it while the other doesn't. You may have meant that; I wasn't sure my your post and whether anybody agress with that is up to them.

I'm sure the Caps could have performed a little better over the last several minutes - it's not cut and dry all Philly turning it up a notch - but my point is that it was more Philly picking up their game than anything else. And I don't think the Caps can handle that team when they take it to that level. They are simply a tougher and more skilled hockey team than the Caps even when we are at full strength.

As always, to each his own...

some of their blah blah blah attitude about the regular season is totally understandable and totally human nature given that last year's presidents trophy truly meant nothing.

but this is where the coach comes in to play.....getting guys to buy in...TEACHING...creating an environment where guys actually look like they give a crap.

it's ALL on the coach if you ask me.

OK, I read all 200 posts. I don't think anyone is being hypercritical or "two faced". Most of the game analysis is dead on, considering the vast difference between the 2nd and 3rd period efforts.

I'm nominating the Caps medical staff for the Nobel Prize in Medicine, 2011. Amazing work bringing a guy back from near certain death with the makeitupasyougo bug.

maybe BB should tell the players at the start of the game that it's the 3rd period and we're down 2 goals. maybe then we'd start a game flying.

If the Caps are going to continue to play this style, they need better goaltending. A move for Vokoun would make sense then.

POSTGAME THOUGHTS:
This team is no better than a middle of the pack team in the Eastern Conference. They should stop being mentioned with any of the better teams in the East because they aren't. Plain and simple.

Once again :40 seconds of a Philly letdown let's the Caps steal a point thus masking the brutal play this team continues to put on display. It's one thing to change to a more defensive style of system in the middle of the season but it's inexcusable that alot of these top scorers don't show up. Sure Ovie finally got one tonight but how much longer will this go on. The lack of forecheck early on in a game is sickening.

I don't know how long GMGM and Ted Leonsis will continue to watch this go on. Sure there is stil a fair amount of hockey left but this team needs to find a better way of producing.

I'm also done with Boudreau's 50 million line combos. At some point you need consistency - sure all players can be familiar with another but at some point enough is enough and you need the guys to start gelling. Wake up Boudreau.

Not blaming the refs but at least one PP would've been nice tonight not that it would've made a difference with the inept PP.

Hope Neuvy is ok.

A point is stolen.

On to Long Island.

? I'm confused, I only posted a few posts on here and they were on about gutting the Caps from management all the way down to all of the players(I also think this should include getting new scouts, trainers, assistant coachers for all phases of the Caps organization. Including all minor league teams).

I never wrote about any posters or even posted a comment directed to any poster on this thread(excluding when I pointed out that MP went 6-0 on his faceoffs, but I was just pointing out an irrelevant stat).

------------------------------------------------------------------------------

I think the only person calling them that was GMGM himself which is kinda funny... he acts like he came in and saved the franchise when in reality, he and the owner were the ones who created the mess in the first place.

He just got lucky and was able to clean up his own mess. He has yet to show that he can take this team to the next level. And after 12 years I'm not holding my breath.

The Caps need to get rid of anybody on this team that has a leadership role because the way these losers play and their lack of desire and grit spreads like a virus to all other players in the organization.

That starts with GMGM and BB. They also need to hire new scouts who will draft guys with some heart. They also have to remove all the "leaders" on this team. They have never won anything and play with no desire. They have also displayed no ability to lead any other player to play with heart or grit.

The Caps need a new identity. The only way to do this is to get rid of the cancers on the team. That is Semin, Green, Backstrom, Ovie, Poti and Laich. Those so called leaders are horrible leaders and need to be removed.

Then they need to remove all the parts who play like those guys. They are Schulz, Fehr, Chimera, Steckel, BGordon and the fake leader Knuble(what has he ever won? He sat the bench for most of the playoffs when he won in Detroit. There was a reason for that).

Unfortunately I think they then have to get rid of Carlson and Alzner as they seem to have caught the same heartless bug that has infected Green. If the Caps would have gutted the organization two years ago, those guys probably could have been saved.

Basically the Caps need to gut their entire roster with maybe the exception of Hendricks and Bradley.

Then they need to get guys in here who know how to win. Guys like Brooks Orpik and Max Talbot. Then with all those draft picks and prospects they get who actually have heart, they need to teach those players how to play the right way. With grit, heart and desire.

Well. sgm3 is like the tenderfoot in Gunsmoke that went into the Long Branch and took his first shot of goat's blood.

And couldn't stop.

Now he's got a dark, hooded robe and he's leading a band of headless calvarymen.

A strange sight to behold.

Of the Kool-Aid drinkers, only fanohock1 can be said to be pretty much holding out. Capt Kirk and capscoach have inched toward the fence. Have a seat. It's a fine thing when you can appreciate all perspectives. I wish fanohock1 could maybe say something that might be positive and true.

But I'm telling you straight out and this is the truth: Take their cars away and they will start to play as a team.

BTW, the Gunsmoke episode with Festus and the Burt Reynolds character going to Wichita was extremely amusing. I feel better.

Yea, I did say the Caps' goaltending is inconsistent. Meanwhile the Flyers have had much more consistency thus far between the pipes...it's part of the reason why they're at the top of the conference.

In case you missed it, the Caps' inconsistent goaltending & D cost them tonight's game. Better luck next time.

Jeez. Everyone needs to calm down. It's a long season. BB has led this team well over the last few years, from bottom of the heap to a President's Trophy and universally agreed-upon contender status.

It's a long season. It doesn't make much sense to talk about firing coaches based on a stretch of games, or on your perception of the team's response to the coach based on a TV show. (A few minutes of an HBO reality series does not actually tell us anything about how these players interact with the coach.) Yes, we haven't gone far yet in the playoffs under BB (though we haven't given him much time). It takes more than a couple years to win a cup. I realize it's therapeutic to reanalyze a team after every loss, but people: we took the first-place conference team to OT in their building at a time when we've been struggling a whole lot. I would understand the complaining if we were the Devils or the Oilers this year. But it's not going so bad, and at this point in the season, that's as good as anything for predicting a Cup win.

Last year, no one was happy when we dominated in the regular season because that doesn't predict playoff success. This year, now that we're just above average in the regular season (still atop the SE and not, by the way, far from the #1 spot), and playing tighter defensively (despite a few lapses), people want BB's head. If it's more than just fan venting, then I really don't get it.

What are you talking about? Haven't you had enough of these losers? I thought you were heavily in favor of complete change.

If not, you should wake up and get out of your dream world. These losers aren't going anywhere. Time to gut the team and start over.

i can see this team has flaws and believe their skilled players will work their way out of the funk they're in.
also - they still need a physical skilled 2C

Inside the caves, Goat's Blood drinkers waken and sniff the air.

Fresh meat! A new Kool-Aid drinker, BigMogilny has appeared!

They rise, throw on their robes, grunt and groan a bit, then pick up scyle and head out into the cold, dark night.

Like a pack of hungry coyotes in the presence of a lone bunny rabbit; like sharks surrounded a wounded and bleeding sea cow; like...oh, forget it.

You've been warned, BigMogilny. Run now...fast..while you still have a chance.

Oh...I forgot some really good adjectives there...

"Like a pack of emaciated and howling coyotes..." Much better.

Re-write, son, it's never right the first time, even if your name is Fitzgerald.

Capt, I can see you have the jitters so bad your hands are shaking inside the sleeves of your pulled down sweatshirt.

It's very, VERY cold in there. So cold that the trees make frost when they exhale oxygen. So cold the faces of the robers are blue. So cold the goat's blood must be served in pure steel goblets because eveything else cracks.

BTW, maybe it's all my fault. I don't do the rock the red, rock the white thing. I either DVR and watch on delay or watch live but too early for dinner.

And from the bowels of cave city, the hounds of boudreau continue to howl.

1-19-11 has mercifully ended for most of you, so hold a candle for those of us on the frontier who must endure today for three more hours. For it hasn't been, "A Two-Point Night."

Does not drinking for four days count as quitting?

I hope at the next practice the forwards work on their wall game, as bad play there cost us the game. If Chimera keeps that puck in front of him at the blueline, at worst it's offsides and a faceoff. Instead, Carter a break the other way and a rather weak, deflating wrap-around goal before the first beer was spilled.

On the second goal, Laich didn't keep it in along the wall at the blueline when we could've sustained some pressure. Instead the Flyers transitioned, get it low, a poor pass by Johnny E. (pains me to say it, but even I know the law of averages was bound to catch up to him), some lost 1-1 battles, missed assignments, and presto...2-0.

True to Erskine's character, he immediately tried to atone for his gaffe by going hard at Zherdev. Went so hard I thought they were going to drop 'em; maybe Johnny got inspired by Carkner going after Paille a few games ago. This led to words with Shelley before the end of the period, and Erskine let him know he backs down from no man.

The team fed off his attitude, just like they did in Boston when Erskine went hard at Lucic at the end of the first. When he was the Caps player interviewed before the third, I knew we would at least tie it up.

It's disappointing to lose again in overtime. Isn't that when our skill players are supposed to dominate? Anyway, BB's exasperated looks are sooooo old and I think the critical comments of him here are pretty accurate. Bring on the Islanders!!

Oh...wait, what day is it (was it)?

Tuesday is/was the 19th? No, 18th. Sorry.

And it's spelled "sycle." No, "sickle?" As in, "Hammer and Sickle?" I think I mixed it up with a scythe, that's it, but I can't remember anyway what a scythe is. Trust me, I'm way more coherent with a glass or two of wine.

But I'll bet the Swiss since they are so ingenious would be able to combine a sickle and scythe into one thing and call it a Swiss Army Sycle.

I think I know what's wrong with this team...

Knuble, Perreault, Gordon, Gordon, Poti, Hannan, King, Neuvirth, Steckel, Bradley, Leonsis, Mcphee, Bob Woods, Russ Thaler...are not any good.

When all of these guys are together, it prevents guys like Ovechkin and Backstrom from reaching their potential (i.e. winning a championship).

Varly was outstanding, but agreed that Neuvy can't allow that first goal...weak. Not really sure how our D cost us this game, though. Minus that one goal, they allowed 1 in 60 mins against the 2nd-highest, most-balanced scoring team in the league.

This one is on our lack of offense...AGAIN. Who knows what-might-have-been had one (or both) of our posts gone in. Sgm3 traced our scoring woes to starting when Fleischmann was traded. I point to that moment as when BB lost the team due to his caste system. We're both probably right.
