Photos: Caps practice for Game 4 at Bell Centre

(Toni L. Sandys/The Washington Post)

Today's practice was all about the struggling power play, but it looks like the Caps managed to have some fun, too. Check out some photos from The Post's Toni Sandys right here.

Also, here's Tarik's story on the power play and the uninvited Canadiens guest whose presence made Coach Bruce Boudreau shut down practice early. Remind anyone of an amusing incident from last year's Rangers series?

There's a very large difference between an opposing player watching a practice and an opposing head coach watching a practice.

While the rules do not forbid it, there is clearly a different connotation.

"You look at the goals that are being scored in the playoffs, it's goals that are coming from the points or the sides and guys are in front and there's a rebound and they score," said Green, the power-play quarterback. "It's not the pretty passes and goals anymore, it's the gritty ones."

I would not give up on Semin though. We have Ovi-Backie-Semin and that is way better than Dino-Ridley-Hunter from an offensive standpoint. We just need Semin to give what he can. Semin doesn't need to be the "man," just a very nice complimentary piece of the puzzle.

but not better than Courtnall-Dale-Dino. That was some great balance.

good thing BB gets to choose who is in net - because i thought it should have been theo for game 3

Posted by: cstanton1 | April 20, 2010 8:08 PM

I disagree. Courtnall was only w/Caps two years, his best two years btw. I will give you Courtnall 88-90 was as good as Semin 08-10. But there's no way on God's white ice sheet that Dino and Hunter of those two years equal Ovi and Backstrom. Dino, as much as I loved him (we named our cat Dino), could match Ovi for goals and grit but not in power. And Hunter, as tough as he was, couldn't hold a candle to Backstrom even now, much less when Backstrom matures.

I'm on record as saying Caps would have 2-3 banners in the rafters (as in Cup banners) had Abe only let Poile match for Scott Stevens. Still, the firepower now on the Caps, especially when you normalize for higher offensive game back then, is a degree better than the late 80s early 90s Caps. The "now" Caps are best offense in the NHL - by far. The "then" Caps were in top 10 offense, defense, PP and PK - a jack of all trades but master of none.

Ovi is "Master," and therein cstanton1 lies the difference.

what the hell ? What a save on Gagne..

Posted by: richmondphil | April 20, 2010 8:44 PM | Report abuse

No.. that's not a crazy idea. BB already said they plan to use both goalies. Lots of fans wanted Theo to get a chance to play at home in game 5 if we won both in Montreal. I just don't think you sit Varly if he plays well tomorrow.

Posted by: rachel216 | April 20, 2010 8:45 PM | Report abuse

I realize Crosby is having a super game but...Darren Elliot and the play by play guy can't go more than a minute without exuding the virtues of his play. Lay off it just a bit boys will ya?

Posted by: ralCapsFan | April 20, 2010 8:50 PM | Report abuse

Everyone try to find a replay of Marty's save.

Mind-blowing.

Posted by: richmondphil | April 20, 2010 8:51 PM | Report abuse

NO coach in his right mind would switch the goalie after going up in the series 3 games to one winning 3 straight games, that's NEVER gonna happen.

could you imagine what kinda criticizm he would receive if his team lost Game 5??

Posted by: joek443 | April 20, 2010 8:51 PM | Report abuse

Let me elaborate - Dino Ciccarelli at his best could match Alex Ovechkin (goal scoring wise) at his "average." From memory, Dino topped out at 52??? goals and Ovi has bested that at least twice.

I can't see how you can think Dino and Hunter could match Ovi and Backstrom as Courtnall at best simply matches Semin. And goals per game was higher then. Reason Caps were so competitive back then was above-average offense with better than above-average defense that was held back by usually not quite as great goaltending.

Once Langway started to drop off and by then they had let Stevens walk, the chance at the Cup sank into the sunset.

Posted by: tominfl1 | April 20, 2010 8:54 PM | Report abuse

They gotta play the NJ/Flyers game on Versus.. this Pens/Sens game is pretty much over and the Sens are playing shinny hockey. 5 goals by PIT in the 2nd??? I'd rather watch the Devils/Flyers series.

Listening to the game on the Ottawa station- the "officiating" is letting the Pens get away with murder in the Sens' barn- you can cut the disgust in the building with a knife. Just because we're paranoid doesn't mean no one's out to get us...

If BB was serious about going with both Theo + Varly then I fully expect him to put Theo in Game 4 if we have the series at 3-1.

Do I agree with it? No, of course not. Theo is off contract next season and we'll be going with Varly + Neuvirth/Holtby so I would totally stick with Varlamov. He has shown that he's capable of being #1 it's more a question of staying healthy and the defense not letting him down. BB is trying to cover all the angles and sticking with Varly killing all of Theo's confidence will not help him if, for whatever reason, Theo has to come in for relief.

Posted by: floms | April 20, 2010 9:57 PM | Report abuse

@ tominfl1

I agree that your figures are in line with league averages, but I don't think this team will be able to afford it. With Ovi getting $9.5 million, Backstrom between $6-8 million and Green between $6-7 million, I don't think this team will be able to pay everyone market value. Even if they trade Semin's $6 million, they will probably get a defenseman or center between the $4-6 million range. With Varly due for a raise in a year or two, I think guys like Fehr, Flash, and Laich are going to have to take significant paycuts to stay.

Posted by: FloridaCapsFan | April 20, 2010 10:15 PM | Report abuse

i think that BB learned last year that he doesn't have a goalie that has the stamina to play every game (physically or mentally) in the playoffs. i believe varly ran out of gas at the end of the pens series last year. i do see BB using theo again and if the caps can come back to DC with a 3-1 lead - that just might be the situation to use him. the whole season was goalie by commitee - i don't see a goalie change every other game but i also don't see riding either one exclusively

Posted by: Capt_Kirk_in_AZ | April 20, 2010 10:24 PM | Report abuse

@ Capt_Kirk_in_AZ

you ARE completely NUTS if you think BB or any other coach will rotate goalies in the playoffs with his team up 3 games to one

you name me ONE coach who has ever done that playoffs, just one...

Varly was just a rookie last year and BB stuck with him all the way to the end. this year he's much more established than he was last year and he had two months off during the season during which he had a chance to work on his strength and conditioning.

Coaching is also about covering your butt... if he switched back to Theo in Game 5 after Varly won 3 straight games and they lost, he would be crucified for the decision from everyone in the hockey world.

Yeah, but the problem with them being a year away is that the core they have now isn't going to be the same as next. They are way above the salary cap with the roster they put out now once Toew's and Kane's extensions go into effect.

Byuf, Versteeg, Sharp. Maybe some d-men, but someone's going to be traded. That trade for Kim Johnson was a prudent move by their GM.

I think it's more the latter. At least that is how I interpret it. Their bottom teams are really strong, while the East bottom teams..well, not so much.

Posted by: joek443 | April 20, 2010 11:59 PM | Report abuse

First of all in the 80's the Caps needed to sign Stevens, a goaltender and a legit #1 Center.
The Stevens need is obvious. Poile also never should have given in to all the Murphy wus, wus hecklers.

Langway, Stevens, Murphy, Hatcher, transitioning to Johannson, Stevens, Murphy, Hatcher, Gonchar would have been unbeatable.

Gustafsson was a good two way center - a poor man's Foresberg, but not a scoring #1. By the time we got Dale he was in his last two years of being a #1. Once Bobby Carpenter faded the Cap's never filled that #1 Center hole.

The Mason, Jennings, Peters(ancient), Beaupre atrocities in goal have lead us to our current conviction that we are always going to give up the soft overtime goal.

Finally Broudeau doesn't care about playing it safe. He will do whatever he thinks will get the Caps the Cup. Pulling Theo last year was ridiculed and if he rotates goalies this year that will also be ridiculed. His whole system is basically ridiculed, so what does he care about a critique of his goalie selection?

Posted by: sailchef1 | April 21, 2010 12:00 AM | Report abuse

Yeah, but even the Avs are a very strong team.

Posted by: richmondphil | April 21, 2010 12:01 AM | Report abuse

Chicago may be a year away... a year they may not have - they are already over the cap for the next year with only like 16 players under contract.

Hossa may be a terrific player, but his contract could be what stops this Hawks team from staying together next year. They'll probably have to dump Versteeg and/or Sharp and/or Buf for picks/prospects just to get enough cap room to fill up the roster.

he pulled Theo after they LOST last year... a few people on here think Theo will get in even if they win with Varly tomorrow night and go up 3 games to 1.

something like that would be debatable ONLY on here... to the outside world, it is NOT because if there ever were a no-brainer coaching decision in playoff hockey, that would be it... which is sticking with the winning goalie.
