Open thread: Capitals at Penguins

By Washington Post Sports Editors

logologo The Washington Capitals (31-19-10) conclude their five-game road trip tonight in Pittsburgh, where a win against the rival Penguins (36-19-5) could go a long way.

If the Capitals can collect two points tonight, they'll move within one of Tampa Bay in the Southeast Division. They would also finish off the trip with a winning record.

Faceoff: 7:30 p.m., CONSOL Energy Center; TV: Versus; Radio: 1500 AM

Update: 7:07 p.m.
Pittsburgh made its first splash of this trade-deadline season, sending defenseman Alex Goligoski to the Dallas Stars in return for winger James Neal and defenseman Matt Niskanen. The Penguins have recalled Brian Strait from Wilkes-Barre to fill the open defense spot that is left as the traded players travel to their new teams.

Based on warm-up here's what the lineup should look like against the Penguins:

Forwards
Ovechkin-Backstrom-Knuble
Laich-Johansson-Semin
Chimera-Perreault-Gordon
King-Steckel-Bradley

Defense
Alzner-Carlson
Schultz-Hannan
Erskine-Sloan

Goal
Neuvirth
Varlamov

Scratches: Mike Green and Matt Hendricks (sick).

Cap the pens!

Caps have got to start showing consistency. Semin can't score a hat trick and then disappear for a month. Ovie has to keep up what he started on the road trip. Laich has also looked better.

My only criticism with the Bufffalo game was that they relly didn't screen Miller enough. If we want to score of Flower we have to tick him off. Get in his space and deflect shots in.

2 wins on the five game road trips saves BB job. A win tonight and one would have to wonder if the Caps are on their way up? A 3-2 road trip would be a big success.

Posted by: festus75 | February 21, 2011 6:27 PM | Report abuse

Neal and Niskanen for Goligoski??? Wow, Shero really pulled a good one off there! He seems like he is really pushing hard for that team. What a steal!

And yet another day passes with no news on the Caps front. I'm thinking we could have really used both Niskanen AND Neal. Will there be anybody left when GMGM decides maybe he should show his team that he wants to make improvements? FRUSTRATING!

Posted by: sca187 | February 21, 2011 6:28 PM | Report abuse

BB is gone at the end of the season if we do anything less than 2 series win and a decent 3rd round showing.

I doubt he gets fired before then though

Posted by: capscoach | February 21, 2011 6:29 PM | Report abuse

How do you not try to beat that deal if your GMGM? Neal would have looked good playing with Ovie. I can't believed GMGM even collects a paycheck. What a joke.

as for the Sabres win? I don't think the Sabres are a great team by any stretch and the way we played them is not the way you win playoff hockey games.

Posted by: cstanton1 | February 21, 2011 5:57 PM | Report abuse

I won't say I think the Sabres are a great team but I think that is the way you have to win in the playoffs. Score the ugly goals, keep the other team from getting lots of good chances and there were not many times where Varly had to make amazing saves. According to the ESPN shot chart 15 of the Sabres 29 shots were from the out side of the faceoff dots on the sides and another 7 were from higher out then the tops of the faceoff circles. That is 21 of 29 shots that were from outside the good scoring areas and only the goal where we provided the screen ourselves were there even screens that were allowed to set up. Really the only bad part of the game was being outshot 11-5 in the third however only three of those shots were from the good scoring areas. Two of those were on that same shift so for the other 19 minutes of the period they only got 1 shot inside the dots and below the tops of the circles. Now this was the Sabres and not the Pens or the Flyers but the way we played was not poor.

Per GM Shero, Martin is out tonight vs. Washington. #Pens

Another player down for tonight.

Posted by: icehammer97 | February 21, 2011 7:02 PM | Report abuse

Dont forget Caps fans, if we win it means nothing because the Penguins are injured, and getting 7 of 8 points against them means nothing.

If we lose, it is the biggest thing since Jesus Christ came back from the dead, and Pittsburgh is far superior to Washington in every way, and photoshops of Caps players will ensue for months...Stay classy Pens fans.

Posted by: SA-Town | February 21, 2011 7:03 PM | Report abuse

King should play but probably won't. But BB would rather have a crew of middle of the road fourth liners who don't really contribute. Yawn.

Good teams can beat playoff teams on the road. We can't. 14-12-3 road record entering tonight's game. 4 losses to Atlanta, 2 to Boston, 1 to NYR, Dallas, Tampa, Phoenix, and San Jose, OTL to Philly. Those are games we need to win but can't because Elmer Fudd likes nok hockey.

Posted by: timKosecki | February 21, 2011 7:03 PM | Report abuse

@sa-town

pretty funny. This game is pretty insignificant in my opinion. However losing to a bunch of AHLers would be pretty brutal for the teams confidence.

Posted by: ThePat | February 21, 2011 7:05 PM | Report abuse

and by insignificant I mean win or lose...the effort they put forth is the only significant thing about tonights game. If they come out and give effort, win or lose I dont really care tonight.

Posted by: StanleyCap | February 21, 2011 6:33 PM | Report abuse

1. It is not like Dallas called all the other teams to ask if they could beat that trade.

2. Until this morning there weren't many who thought Neal was available and no one thought it would cost this little.

3. The only player we have who is close to Goligoski is Carlson and I am fine with keeping him even if it means not getting Neil and Niskanen.

Posted by: icehammer97 | February 21, 2011 7:07 PM | Report abuse

Neil is not what we need. We need a center and/or two way D-man... Poti who isnt going to play in my opinion.

I would be willing to move Neuvirth for a decent center, then pick up a veteran backup.

Posted by: chatton | February 21, 2011 7:58 PM | Report abuse

I just watched a recent Rangers game. They played their butts off and finished about 65 hits in that game. They got official credit for I think 50.

I can't imagine this Caps team even in a critical Stanley Cup Final game ever finishing that quantity of hits. With Hendricks out, they'll probably struggle to get to the 20 hit level tonight. And that's with a renewed Ovechkin who wasnt' contributing in that dept much earlier in the season. What did they have v the Sabres? 10 hits or something? Maybe they finished 15 and got credit for 10. But still, I sure hope they don't think that avoiding contact or not initiating contact is now their secret to success.

The Pens and the AHLers are just simply out working our guys. Beating us to pucks and winning the little battles for the most part.

We thought it would be easy playing against a shorthanded team. But you still have to work if you want positive results.

Pens have character. Caps don't. And its only the Caps fans with blinders on who can't see that. No offence.

If a Caps team was this decimated by injuries, they wouldn't even show up to play.

The Pens have been missing Sid, Kunitz, Malkin, Asham, Cooke on his suspension, and a few others and still play hard. Imagine the Caps missing Backs, Ovy, Hendricks, Bradley (sorry I've run out of character forwards)

Posted by: Doom_and_Gloom | February 21, 2011 8:20 PM | Report abuse

Grit-wise, the Caps team isn't top 15 in hockey. If you don't fix that, sayonara.

And its more than just simply blindly finishing checks that determines that. Some teams like Vancouver don't have high hit totals but they're a scrappy squad that has agitators and have no problem engaging in scrums or crease battles.

This year's Caps team is actually finishing checks at a more prolific level than last year's team. But you can see, they don't have the stomach for grinding it out consistently. They don't like to do it.

Posted by: cstanton1 | February 21, 2011 8:20 PM | Report abuse

@VTDuffman

The team that works harder generally gets the calls. Semin and Chimera were clearly penalties. The Hannan thing was a bad call. But we havent done anything to warrant a call on them yet.

--Total domination by Pitt... reminiscient of the latter half of the playoff series... they're simply skating harder, working harder and getting to pucks first on the forecheck then getting pucks to the point then getting shots through traffic

--Tyler "Hold Your Breath When He Has the Puck in the D-Zone" Sloan

--#8 has to stop getting cute with the puck in the d-zone... turnover waiting to happen

--worth repeating: simply getting outworked... it's clear that Bylsma demands and gets higher work rates and compete levels out of his players... that along with their GM bringing in players that possess those qualities

--it'd be nice if our nearly $10 mil per season scoring wing didn't suck so much on breakaways

--too slow with the decision-making in the d-zone is leading to turnovers and extended periods pinned in our own end

--it'd be nice if we knew how to forecheck and sustain pressure the way that this undermanned Pitt team does it... their top guys are good at it, too... we're still a one-and-done rush team with our top lines and while our lower lines our better at cycling the puck, they could be a lot better at it

This is the same BS Caps fans were whining about in the playoff series.

The Pat nailed it but I'd add that even if the Hannan call was borderline, it stemmed from the very same issue:

The Penguins were simply outskating, outworking and outcompeting the Capitals in that period. You tend to get more calls in your favor when you are the team working harder and dictating play. Most of the calls are the result of us chasing the play and losing battles.

------------------------

absolutely true.

The Pens are light years ahead of us in how they compete on every shift in every game. They can go into Philly one day and slug it out and then go into MSG and leave it all on the ice. That's truly the secret to their success. Their talent is matched by their grit, and in some cases, exceeded by.

But its also helps knowing they have a GM who has the ability to boost their team with the right move at the right time.

This is a team 2 yrs removed from a Cup win and their work ethic is still unmatched by most teams on most nights. And a GM who aggressively rebuilt the D this offseason and finds ways to consistently bring in gritty forwards who can play a regular shift (Cooke, Kunitz, Neal)

Our GM can't even find a 4th line enforcer.

"Everybody is trading players except the Caps. Instead we keep Sloan."

---

The problem is with trading, it takes 2 to tango. And let's be honest, who would want what we're offering?

It's a catch-22 - the only players anyone would want are the players we shouldn't trade, and the players we want to trade no one wants. Seriously, who on this squad would you want right now? There's a reason we want to trade them.

The only players with any trade value that we could afford to give up is one of the goalies, and GMGM doesn't have the marbles to make that trade because he's afraid he'd pick the wrong one.

Posted by: VTDuffman | February 21, 2011 8:30 PM | Report abuse

Looked like DJK asked Engelland to go late in the first, right after his net presence almost caused a goal (ala the Dallas game). Engelland chickened, cstanton, and that's my story and I'm sticking to it :)

Sloan, aside from his blocked shot that sprung Ovi, played awful. And glad to see folks here blasting the ****55 "tower of power" comment...UNBELIEVABLE!

Someone needs to come out w/a vengeance and set a better tone for the 2nd

Posted by: vermontcaps | February 21, 2011 8:30 PM | Report abuse

Sloan was brutal. Two terrible giveaways in the first 5 minutes.

Cstanton: Caps haven't had a consistent third line since Hanlon was coach. Of course, with him, we had three 3rd lines and one 4th line. And the last time we had a good 3rd line was before Kono was traded.

Why won't someone on our team put some lumber on Rupp? That MF is hanging out in our crease like he owns it. Someone on our 3rd line needs to step up!

Oh.

Posted by: tominsocal1 | February 21, 2011 8:32 PM | Report abuse

If you're the Caps, you go into this game with a vengeance from the first shift onwards. You have an opportunity to bury a team decimated by injuries. Yet you skate away from check after potential check in the offensive zone, your forwards like Semin and Perreault make stupid turnovers deep in your own end and don't do anything to try and get the puck back.

The Caps aren't wilting. They're just not showing any desire to bury the Pens. And thats why the first period went the way it did. This team simply does not like to jump on another team. They're content to play a passive game until they feel an urgent need kick in (i.e. when they're down a goal or two)

Posted by: RITdude | February 21, 2011 8:35 PM | Report abuse

Cstanton: Caps haven't had a consistent third line since Hanlon was coach. Of course, with him, we had three 3rd lines and one 4th line. And the last time we had a good 3rd line was before Kono was traded.

-------tom-----

goda** true Tom. That 3rd line of Sutherby centering Brads and Clymer was our best line on most nights.

We also had that great Kono-Halp-Dahlen line. And before that we had Burridge-Halp-Kono for a little while.

And back in the day it was the Plumber line. Although I have since developed quite a disdain for #18.

"This team simply does not like to jump on another team. They're content to play a passive game until they feel an urgent need kick in (i.e. when they're down a goal or two)"

---

To me this is coaching, almost 100%. There's something to be said for intrinsic player motivation of course, but over a period of time when your coach isn't demanding it of you, it will diminish. When a coach expects it every minute, every shift, every period, every game, and *Actually hold players responsible*, it's so evident.

Exhibit A: The last 20 minutes.

A coach, a coach, my kingdom for an actual NHL Coach.

Why won't someone on our team put some lumber on Rupp?
-----------

because we have no one except Erskine who can tangle with him. And King of course but he rarely sees the ice.

Rupp used to actually be a soft player who was counted on to be a scoring forward. When that didnt' pan out, he became a workout warrior, took boxing lessons, and learned how to fight. His career was revitalized by the Devils and Lou L who wanted him to use his size more. Sizemore? as in Tom?

but the Devils basically demanded that Rupp become a bruising forward and thats what he finally did to stick in the nhl.

We are very simply getting outworked. The Penguins want the puck more. They want to work harder. They want to win individual battles.

Pitt's gonna come even harder now. Critical stretch to start the 3rd. Resist and get the next goal.

25 twice used his speed late in the 2nd to chip the puck past 2 Penguins and retrieve it. That's about his only NHL-caliber skills so he should use it more often by doing stuff like that.

Brads was the MVP of that period. 8 was strong offensively. That was a missile he scored on.

Posted by: tmac2yao | February 21, 2011 9:14 PM | Report abuse

so far the Caps have played a very good 20 mins of hockey.

Only bad play in that period was Boyd Gordon failing to clear the puck on the shift following Ovy's goal. For a 'defensive' forward, his instincts on how to jam a puck out are atrocious.

Posted by: cstanton1 | February 21, 2011 9:15 PM | Report abuse

Much better period. Worked a lot harder. MaJo outworks his guy driving to the net and gets tripped leading to the goal.

Ovi's shot was a bullet.

Great hit by Bradley on Cooke. Was completely clean. Bradley has been awesome all game. The little that DJ King has played tonight, I think its been his best game so far as a Cap.

Laich is finishing checks.

Chimera and Semin are no shows tonight.

Michaelek is having a hell of a game for the Pens tonight.

The Caps went from nearly giving up a shorty to nearly breaking the twine, and close to the end of the period too. I'm not so sure they were going through the motions in the 1st period either.

Now, need to come out in the 3rd with same intensity to get the 2 points. I saw the Penguins wilting a bit in that period.

Posted by: Capt_Kirk_in_AZ

yeah right.

My prediction is the Caps have a so-so 3rd pd where they wait for the Pens to tie it up before giving a better effort. This team has no killer instinct. Even following the Ovy goal, the forecheck kinda subsided. You could see an immediate dropoff. They battled furiously to go ahead, and then they relaxed. They had no hits after that goal and they passed up about 6 chances in the last 3 minutes to put a clean hit on a Pens player.

That's not accidental. That's the personality of this team. They came out slow. Felt some urgency and played a strong period. Then they scored a goal and relaxed a bit. I expect their aggressiveness to wane even more in the 3rd.

Posted by: cstanton1 | February 21, 2011 9:21 PM | Report abuse

Posted by: jmurray019 | February 21, 2011 9:21 PM | Report abuse

Ovie is back to his old self-- leading on all fronts. And Neuvy has been incredible. I wish the game was over right now.

You guys have been very negative about this team. All postings were negative last night until we won. I thought we played a full sixty-minute game, were disciplined with regard to penalties, dominated in puck possession and in the end things were our way. I do see the defense picking up, perhaps not as fast as we would like but at a steady pace.

Hey Pierre, or whoever it was, just called us "gritty" during the break. Who would have thought it? But they still have a patronizing tone when speaking about the Caps (unlike when they speak about the Pens).

Will we hold on to our one-goal advantage? Will we score another one? I say Ovie or Backie scores next. I am so nervous I can't stand to watch.

What he does aint' easy. That's why not many NHLers are willing to be that guy. The one who takes it upon himself to get under the skins of the opponents and invite their wrath.

all true. DJ has been a presence in the crease a bit. Chimera and Semin are floaters as usual. Michalek I always thought was the better of the 2 dmen the Pens picked up this offseason. Its very rare to see a Caps player really pound an opposing player. We have 2 guys who fight well, 1 guy who is a gamer in Brads, and a guy who is leading this team in fights who wouldn't crack the top 6 fighters on some teams.

25 with his 3rd solo chip and chase. Didn't get to the puck first but his pressure got him the puck back. He then sent a pass across the goal mouth that nearly turned into an assist.

No stupid mistakes now. Execute cleanly and we should get chances.

The Ducks made two great pickups- Ruutu and reacquiring Beauchemin.

The Caps meanwhile will state that their best trade was the one they never made. And that after lookin around the league they figured that a healthy Tom Poti was better than what was out there.

You think i'm makin this up but..that's exactly what McPhee said about Pothier.

great little play by Ovy where he sneak attacks Cooke in the pile. That's what he needs to do. Give a little shot, then get out. Almost drew the retaliatory penalty.

@zmega

the point you miss about guys like Cooke and TAlbot and Orpik is they help create healthy rivalries between teams because of their style of play.

Edm-Cal for example was less about Gretzky v Lanny McDonald or Joe Mullen than it was Peplinski v Messier or McSorley v Hunter or Gary Roberts v Glenn Anderson

Posted by: Doom_and_Gloom | February 21, 2011 9:54 PM | Report abuse

I's nice that your confident and all Ovechkin but dump the puck in instead of trying to go 3-on-1.

Semin made a real simple and smart play on his last shift. He waited for his linemates to get some speed then made a simple dump in instead of trying to get fancy. The result? We ended up having the puck in Pitt's end for about a min. Just as importantly, Pitt didn't have the puck in our end. That's high hockey IQ, recognizing the game situation and making a decision accordingly. Often times simple is best.

Win or lose, people are starting to recognize that the Caps are at least trying to play smarter hockey.

And they made a point earlier that I've been making going back to last season: Our high offensive output was fool's gold and entirely misleading of our actual skill level. When you work harder and do the right things defensively, you have less energy and aren't in the same position to score as easily. A lot of teams could dramatically increase their scoring if they went run 'n gun like we were doing in the past but it isn't sound hockey and it's bound to get exploited at one point or another.

Defense first. Always.

Hannan may not be the most physical defenseman, but the man knows how to play steady defense. Positionally, he is very sound. He is a great communicator, especially with his 'D' partner, but also with his goalie and forwards. He is making those around him better ... at least certainly in the Caps zone. He will be a huge plus in this year's playoffs.

The energy level wasn't good enough for the first pd and a half but they did well enough in their own zone... good positioning... good goaltending... good sacrifice in front of the net.

Marcus Johansson is one smart kid. He has probably been one of our 2 or 3 most consistent forwards over the last 2 months or so, certainly as far as performing his role is concerned. He's the opposite of a spoiled, well-paid prima donna. He thinks the game well and at the very minimum, brings his work boots and tries to do what he's supposed to. Ocassionally, he even goes above and beyond.

If he keeps this up, I may have to give McPhee and his scouts a bit of credit for that pick. Still not a fan of McPhee but even I'll acknowledge when he gets things right. Too soon to tell for sure with some of the kids but it's nice to see rookies playing with that kind of poise and consistency.

The PP where Ovi scored was a microcosm of the Caps game as a whole. The Caps were looking particular inept there, gave the Pens not one but two shorthanded chances but then the Caps got the puck and, after several passes, Ovi scored and the Caps prevailed.

Posted by: cstanton1 | February 21, 2011 10:19 PM

Exactly. Can't forget the sluggish start and the fact that the Pens were heavily outworking us and tilting the ice. They were forechecking us the way they did to come back in that playoff series. We were on our heels way too much but we maintained the commitment to defense. That is the key. We got lucky tonight that they didn't have their top guns or that early dominance would've surely translated into some goals for them.

Still, loved the positives in this game. Gotta stay the course. This is much more sound hockey than the crap we saw in the past.

And props to Knubes. He may not always deliver on the ice but his value to this team genuinely extends to off the ice. These young guns need a voice like that in the locker room. And Knubes does do a lot of little things on the ice consistently that don't always get noticed. It's not all about scoring.

This was a gritty, ugly, beat-down, old school game. Huge props for the 'new' caps doing all the little things defensively to get the win. This is the Caps now, gritty and D minded - if we can just squeeze another goal or two a game, and get the PP going - we will be very tough in the playoffs. I'm proud of the team tonight. It's taken awhile to accept the new D minded system, but they are sticking with it - so may as well get on board too.

tmac2yao - As much as GMGM has his flaws and typically has a problem with pulling the big trades, I think over the past 5-10 years he has done ridiculously incredible job of drafting.

His young players, both high draft picks and low first and second round picks, have littered this team over the past couple of years and it looks like or the next couple of years to come.

the irony there is, he was Bruce's #1 guy in Hershey for a while. He played winger, he played end to end rushing dman, the whole deal. The Caps scouting staff upon Bruce's recommendation looked at TS as ShaMo's replacement. But he didn't come along well enough for the Caps to jettison Mo 2 yrs ago.

I'm not a Sloan fan per se. But I see things in his game I like. For ex, he's good at being aggressive in the neutral zone. He makes one play every game where he cuts across the middle of the ice and takes out a forward right as the guy passes the puck. He didn't get credit for that hit tonight but it was a very effective aggressive take out.

I think he needs ice time and confidence. He's strong and mobile. I could live with him as our 6th dman.

2) I'm patting myself on the back for two nicknames I created - The Bradley Fighting Vehicle and Maxi Pad Talbot (after he called Ovi a d-bag last summer in interview).

3) Really impressed with MaJo on PK and the pass to Ovi. He will be a #2 center if not next year, 2012-13.

4) I also wondered about Jarko Ruutu being moved for a #6. We could have used him to counteract Matt Cooke. He would have been prefect vs Pens and Flyers.

5) Props to baby Bird (Neuvy). #1 star.

6) Vs announcers drooling over caps effort but we gave up 39 shots. Of course, it WAS like MTL giving uo lots of perimeter shots last April

i keed! good commment cc, i agree. This kind of shutdown defensive hockey can only help this team in the playoffs.

On the practice schedule, the Caps are getting tomorrow off. They will have a 10:30 practice on Wednesday and Thursday. And the usual morning skate on Friday.

tmac - not boasting at all.

There are some flaws on this team and GMGM is the reason behind those flaws. If the flaws are not addressed, he will be the one to blame.

And agreed...alot of good things to take away from this game...hopefully some good things to build on!

He may be overstating it a bit but it also certainly isn't accurate to say he has done a poor job. If that is where you are going then you need to check your facts and don't give me the BS argument about high picks as many a team has blown those "sure thing" picks.

Course it was the Pens, so I expect no less, but it was a fine, fine third period with a lead.

Posted by: Justafan

still....with Crosby, Malkin, Asham, Kunitz etc etc in the lineup, we lose this game. So lets not get ahead of ourselves. The only way to beat their regular lineup when healthy is by playing all 3 periods the way we played the 2nd pd. And even then its a tossup.

Can we do that? Not consistently.

i can concede that we do play a more motivated game when Malkin and Cros are in there. I still think we lose more than we win against that lineup. But yes, lets bask in the glow of a hardfought victory tonight. And also give the Pens a hand for playing hard against a much better team on paper and frankly outplaying us in some aspects.

Most of all, props to Bradley. He really filled the Hendricks void tonight and I sure wish I couldve seen em both in the lineup at the same time tonight. I think Hendricks would've really stirred the pot and really gone hard after Cooke.

didn't we own the Flyers the year we lost to em in the playoffs?

I'll admit. I had NO idea our record v the Pens was that good over the past 15 games. I guess they bring out the best in us. They're good for us. And contrary to what some may think, I love seeing players like Matt Cooke in the lineup against us. It provides a better battle. And this team needs as much battle-testing before the playoffs.

The hate on this thread is pathetic. Just went 3-2 on a 5 Gm roadtrip against 4 playoff teams. That was a carbon copy of how montreal beat u last year. 7-0 wins seem to be the only wins that satisfy most here. Then again the majority usually is silent.

After watching this game, maybe using 10 ahl players and two rookies on defense is the way to go. The pens had more intensity than in any other pens cap game other than the 2009 playoffs. Just didn't have that star player come through. This is not an excuse but to beat the caps we need a Crosby or Malkin to make the likelihood of a win greater. Pens still had the edge in shots, takeaways, hits, favors wins but couldnt get the goal.

Odds Ovi gets to 40 goals?

Posted by: dglelite | February 21, 2011 11:04 PM | Report abuse

POSTGAME THOUGHTS AND TRADE DEADLINE THOUGHTS:

Back on their heels early - the Caps rebounded with a gritty, defensive, shot blocking effort.

OVIE: That was a first class cannon from the point. I still see the steam following the puck after that shot. He's churnin and burnin.

BRADLEY: Thank you for finally doing what I want someone to do to Matt Cooke. Hey Cooke hope you took notes from your ass - that's how you throw a CLEAN AND LEGAL hit. Brads was on a mission tonight.

NEUVIRTH: Rock solid and sucked that puck up tonight. Job well done standing his ground.

TEAM DEFENSE: Sure the Pens rolled in the first but in the third the Caps showed they can win these games even with some close losses. Gritty character effort - who cares if the Pens stars were out. Sure it was a different game - bottomline - they blocked shots at key times.

TRADE DEADLINE: Three days off before the next game. I think if McPhee has any deal that he can make with a phone call now - he'll do it and get someone in here early. However, if he is still working on some things I can see moves happening deadline day but don't be surprised if anything happens tomorrow or Wednesday. That's just a thought - I have no sources or not suggesting anything.

Heinz Field - Check. Consol Energy Center check. Can we have an outside game with the Pens at PNC Park just to pull of the Pittsburgh hat trick????

Great finish to the road trip. 3-2 isn't that bad. Bring it home boys. It's been a two point night.

I'll take a 27 hit effort on the road. So I don't need to see the Caps necessarily outhit the Pens on the statsheet because there's other variables at play.

What I don't like to see is an effin 10 hit effort v the Sabres. But the sting of that lessens a little when they can prove that they can put up 25+ hits in the next game.

I still think, getting Beags back into the lineup will add a little more jam and better cycling effort.

My fear is, in order to help the PP McPhee goes out and gets a powderpuff frail skill player that ends up kicking a good role player out of the lineup. And of course, the much anticipated return of the great #3

Posted by: icehammer97

sorry for not responding to your well thought out post.

There is a difference between positional play and straight-ahead play. For one, the Sabres are not a good forechecking team. So its easier to push them towards the outside and make them a perimeter team.

I just don't consider Buffalo a very strong and hard team to play against. And it would take a much better effort than that to succeed in the playoffs.

10-0-2 with no CUP. Awesome to beat the Pens, but until we win a CUP what does it mean? We're getting there, but until we win a Cup and preferably beat the Pens in a series while doing it, the record means nothing.

Who will remember our 2-year record against them 3,4 5 years from now? I wouldn't. They have playoff successes against us going back 2 decades. When we go from season victories to playoff series victories, I'll be on happy camper.
