Pennsylvania State Police Investigating Threat to Ovechkin (Updated)

Earlier this week, a death threat was made against Alex Ovechkin on the Pittsburgh Penguins' team Web site message boards, I'm told. When the Caps were made aware of the threat, they contacted the proper authorities, including the Pittsburgh Police Dept., state police and NHL security.

The Caps just released the following statement: "We became aware of an inappropriate comment on a message board and referred it to appropriate authorities. We appreciate their diligence and have every confidence in our club's safety."

According to Pittsburgh's Channel 11 News, which reported the threat earlier this afternoon, local police are investigating it. The network's Web site also had this statement from the Penguins: "We were notified of the message and immediately turned over all information to the authorities."

I'm going to make a call to the police dept. right now. So stay tuned.

Update: Channel 11 just updated their Web site with this:

Police told Channel 11's Marc Willis that a 17-year-old in Chambersburg, Pa., posted the threat on an NHL Web site on Wednesday. Chambersburg is located about three hours east of Pittsburgh.

I'm still trying to get a hold of someone at the state police.

Holy tamales! It boggles the mind, the level of classless that Pens fans will stoop to... I got so disgusted the last time I read comments in a Pens blog that I have not been back since, but this takes the cake for gall.

I hope they find the esso-bee and arrest him and all his buddies and throw the book at them all.

This is yet another reason why logging IP addresses is important on blogs, and why I think this one should go to a better system than the one it has. Yes, there are proxy servers out there, but they are mostly known, and the firewall this blog hopefully sits behind, if set up properly, can block any user coming from a known proxy server.

There was a thread about this on the Caps message boards a couple of days ago.
http://boards.washingtoncaps.com/index.php?s=&showtopic=86758&view=findpost&p=1971812

It would seem the Pens board post in question has been removed. If memory serves, basically the post said something along the lines of "I'm killing Ovechkin, I don't care if I go to jail."

Possibly just idle message board posturing. But you never know.

Posted by: CapsChick | May 7, 2009 5:08 PM | Report abuse

The sad thing is, this would have had to have been a “credible” threat. People say things on message boards all the time. Including threats, sexual innuendo, all kinds of other inappropriate things. Bottom line is, a quote from a “blog” would never be forwarded law enforcement unless in was credible. Meaning this Pittsburgh a$$-hole probably specifically mention some type of plan. Whether he/she was joking or not, we will probably never know. Pretty disgusting and sad. For a fan of GAME to even joke about something like that is pathetic. I’m starting to feel bad for Pitt fans. Oh well.

Posted by: cj658 | May 7, 2009 5:08 PM | Report abuse

I know some very nice people in Pittsburgh and as we all know it only takes one crazy to do something stupid. I am sure the Pens fans as a whole would not be accepting of this type of behavior. They would love Ovy as we do if he were on their team. It is somewhat a compliment to have opposing teams' fans hate you if you are a player. Making dealth threats is taking it way too far.

But I read this at Ticketmaster.com
"The event is only open to Washington Capitals Season Ticket Holders located in the Washington, DC metropolitan area. Sales to this event will be restricted to residents of the local market. Residency will be based on credit card billing address. Orders by residents outside of this area"

If you Google search "Ovie getting his ass kicked" you will generate zero results. It just doesn't happen.

Ovie invented black. In fact, he invented the entire spectrum of visible light. Except pink. Cindy Crysby invented pink.

Ovie doesn't bowl strikes, he just knocks down one pin and the other nine faint.

There are no weapons of mass destruction in Iraq, Ovechkin lives in Oklahoma.

Ovechkin played Russian Roulette with a fully loaded gun and won.

He was clearly angry but I can totally see that as a joke, saying "I'm killing Ovechkin I'll go to jail I don't care anymore." rachel216: Unfortunately for this guy, even an obviously fake death threat is pretty much on the same level as joking about bombs in an airport -- you just don't do it. He's almost positively not going to be doing any jail time, but this will absolutely derail his May and June. There'll be a court-ordered psychological evaluation, I'm sure. They'll find that it was an empty statement made in anger, and that'll be the end of that. But it's still going to cost a LOT more than the few seconds it took to type, perhaps both in time and money.

rachel: it's understandable that it was just a joke. but there is no way of knowing that for sure. I mean for all you know there could be some seriously disturbed person on the other side of the screen writing that. which probably isn't the case here but still, say if anything were to happen, and that post had been made, NHL officials and penguins organization could be held liable for not taking appropriate actions.

and honestly, I get really into these games too and I get mad but i would NEVER post a comment like that, no matter how angry I get.

Posted by: rachel216 | May 7, 2009 5:48 PM

I understand what you mean Rachel, but with all the recent (and not so recent but surely ongoing) gun shootings and what not in this world, a statement like that (whatever its intentions are) on a public forum should never be taken too lightly. That is just the way of the world these days.

I mean, most likely it was just that, a joke, or an empty threat, but sometimes if you are going to talk the talk, whether you walk the walk or not, you are still going to have to deal with the consequences.

Anyways, all this sideshow aside, I really feel we will see a much better effort from our boys tomorrow. Its so strange how our loss reflected both Bruins loss as well as the Bears loss last night. Sometimes a loss is just what it takes to help right the wrongs and come out strong.

Go Caps!

@The_Stanley_Caps:
The Bears so far this postseason are playing exactly the way that I remember they played back in 05-06 when they won the Calder Cup. And then the Caps are playing that same game, only kicked up a few notches in speed and skill.
From what I've read and know, part of the reason that the Bears and Caps have almost identical games is that BB and Bob Woods coached together, and they run on the same system. And wow, how that system has worked.
I personally hope that if the Caps need to call up one or two people, it'll be Mink and/or Aucoin. They seem to be the best choice. If they want to call up another rookie though, Mathieu Perrault, however small he is, is REALLY good.

Posted by: 4RBears | May 7, 2009 6:29 PM | Report abuse

Back to the game, please. Tough luck for Nylander. A spot opens in the line-up, and they call up a kid to take his spot. I didn't think he lookeed that bad last night. He wasn't especially memorable either way, but I can't think of an example where he completely screwed the pooch on something.

Would LOVE Mink and/or Aucoin, really liked them during this season. It seems funny to say they would have fresh legs since they too are in the playoffs but so far with Sloan it seems to be true. Think he's been great so far, meshes right in with the team but his skill level stands out.

LarryDavid- I like knowing when death threats are made against my team. Just my style. But good luck getting that info, see you when you get the pulitzer.

I kind of agree, I mean he took a bad penalty but I didn't think he played that much worse than the rest of our team last night. Unfortunately for Nyls everyone is ready to send him off, so unless he scored the gwg he was going to be pulled...Not sure if ALL the Nyls hating is justified but I haven't seen him really prove himself in a very long time whereas our AHL kids have.

Posted by: mrszilla | May 7, 2009 6:41 PM | Report abuse

Larry David. You call that a question. The moves made sense when they were made. Looking back, I ask you did we have an idea Varlamov would be so ready this quick or that Nylander would be so ineffective this year after being rather strong with Rangers?

Tarik, thanks for the INFO which it is.

Posted by: rbluesw | May 7, 2009 6:43 PM | Report abuse

On a Bears/Caps note...
I was just talking with my mother on the subject of both games last night, and it's odd what we realized, and some of the feelings that I had felt during my time of listening to the bears game while watching a muted caps game: the games played out VERY similarly to each other! Goals scored at approximately the same time in each game, both for and against, the goals against seemed more or less not the goaltender's fault, and they both lost the game in OT pretty deep into the 20 minutes.
So I repeat my mantra for the day: "They are MIRRORS, I tell you, MIRRORS!"

@madmax521

Agree with you. I think Boudreau will get the boys fired up for tomorrow. I didn't expect a series sweep. My realistic hope (and expectation) was a split in P-burgh. So, tomorrow should be that.

And, then finish it at home on Saturday. (I know it will be hard for Varlamov to do back to back games.)

....The "moves" were both acts of desperation.

This report is childish.....

So I guess the fact that Versus had a little update about it, ESPN has an article about it, CBC has an article about it and the fact that it's made news in places other than pittsburgh and DC, makes it "childish".

Childish is acting like TEB is the ONLY one reporting on this.
Gotta love the obvious fact that you dwell on the past, as evidenced by your posts.

You folks have to understand, larrydavid is an armchair GM, who thinks he can run things better than McPhee. Amazing how no team is beating down the door to his parent's basement to hire him.

I think Varly will be fine in back to backs. He's 21, just. I used to get so drunk I thought she was pretty, stay up until 5, get up at 6, go to work, put in a great effort, get off, and party all night again.

And I made minimum wage.

All I want for Mother's Day is Caps wins on Friday and Saturday. (If both don't happen, I'll settle for two wins for ANY two games out of the next 4, the sooner the better.)

I don't care about the diamond ring or the diamond necklace or even getting flowers. I'm tied up on Sunday at the O's game so dinner may be hard to get anyhow.

Re: Tomorrow's game

And I agree I think Bruce will help turn it up tomorrow. For those watching game 2 on tv we all heard Bruce say after the first period- "we are playing like idiots, taking stupid penalties, I'm not happy." (not word-for-word but pretty close) In the 2nd and 3rd the boys were tight and played really well. He clearly gave them a talking to, and I think he will/has again.

LET'S GO CAPS! WE BELIEVE!

As far as or AHL forwards, the only one that proved he was NHL ready is Aucoin. Giroux did not produce even though he was put on the 2nd line. He score 1 goal. He created chances, 3 breakaways if memory serves, and he bagged none of them. Osala never really got too much of a shot but didnt look good IMO. I think Bourque's chances have dried up. If the Caps see no use for him and can get a 3rd round pick or so I'd jump at it.

Will watch on TV Friday while my daughter's off at her HS prom. Will go to Caps game on Saturday. And to the Orioles game on Sunday.) Plus, my sister's in town and I'll meet her for lunch on Sat. afternoon.

I agree that Aucoin seemed ready for NHL prime time. He did well when on a line with Semin and even got on the 1st power play unit in one game.

Those of you who wonder if Theo might be in goal in a back-to-back game must NOT be serious. With every game being critical to whether or not we win the series, do you really think that BB would replace the most successful player, other than Ovie, to take a chance with a highly unreliable goalie?

Posted by: caraveli | May 7, 2009 10:08 PM | Report abuse

Even though our results are the opposite of what they were against the Rangers, we are not playing exactly like them.

Game 1 was one where we had very few shots but they counted. (That one looked a lot like Game 7 vs the Rangers, with a similar result.)

Game 2, we started poorly but were tied after 1. We had more energy 2nd period but still gave up a goal. Third period, overall, was good, even if sloppy at the end.

Game 3, we looked bad and were lucky to go to OT, with an unfortunate loss.

Plus, we won the games at home and lost Game 3 on the road. (The Rags won away and lost Game 3 at home.)

Posted by: CapsFan75 | May 7, 2009 10:10 PM | Report abuse

About our past failures against the Penguins. These are not your father's Capitals. Or your father's Penguins. This is the next generation. During those failures, most of our current Caps were children, even for the most recent one.

Posted by: CapsFan75 | May 7, 2009 10:14 PM | Report abuse

This whole situation is a little over the top in my opinion. I know they take every little thing seriously but I mean...come on. Like BB said welcome to the circus...

Having a day to dwell on it, there isn't much we can do about the officiating. I still think it was pretty bad but it is what it is. Even if it's more to what I think it should of been we got outplayed to the point we'd still be relying on Varlamov to steal that game for us. We'll do our lobbying through the media and to the league just like they did before Game 3. Even though some of the penalties were very weak calls, we can be smarter to not retaliate at all and avoid the situation even coming up where they could make a weak call.

After 5 straight wins you had to figure we were going to have a flat game at some point. Big game tomorrow get the win and we can come home with a chance to end the series.

I hope you're right Capsfan75! All I can say is I hope you're right. There were many times during our 7 playoff series against these Pens where we thought the same thing and twice we were up 2-0 only to lose the next 4. If these aren't our daddy's Capitals then they'll win game 4!

Posted by: pokerface1208 | May 7, 2009 10:29 PM | Report abuse

@pokerface1208

We didn't have Ovi or Semin (or anyone like them in those days.)

I recall getting so disgusted with the Caps losing a playoff series in 1986 that I started calling them "The Lower Cases" as in opposite of Capitals.

I've lived through every heartbreaking playoff series. Granted, for most of the ones in the late 1980's and early 1990's, I was preoccupied with my babies and work so I wasn't as into sports in general. Now, several of the Caps are the age of my first daughter.

Posted by: CapsFan75 | May 7, 2009 10:36 PM | Report abuse

@Davethecapsfan

Agree with you. We were due for a stinker after 5 wins in a row.

My memory may be faint but I recall that many of our heartbreaking overtime losses were at home, not away, unlike yesterday's game.

Actually Aucoin would go perfect between Brads and Laich and a killer checking line and maybe he can get Laich going. The question is what happens if Feds is out and who pivots OV and Koz.

Posted by: RichC3 | May 7, 2009 10:46 PM | Report abuse

Yeah, these Caps and Pens are not from my 20's. The 1991-92 Caps lost to the Pens that went on to win the Stanley Cup. In 1995-96 the Caps had Peter Bondra with 52 goals, and from there only one other guy with over 20 which was Steve Konowalchuk with 23, our 3rd highest goal scorer was Keith Jones with 18. That's when we played Caps hockey. You know, played tight defense and hoped Bondra would score from a feed from Pivonka.

These Pens are good, but not nearly as good as the 1995-96 squad. That was the year Lemieux had 69 goals and Jagr had 62. They had 6 guys with over 20 goals.

History only matters when you compare core players to core players. Not sure why everyone feels the wheels have come off the cart. The boys reeled 5 wins in a row and lost in OT. Yeah, they got outplayed, but they played a team that knew there season was over if they didn't win yesterday. Some posters have said the Caps should have approached the game the same way. I'm sure they tried but FEAR is an unbelievable adrenal rush. The Pens played with FEAR. Keep the faith.

@fanohock1

Great post on the Caps history! My own memory has gotten faint in that department. In 1991, I had just had a baby so guess what I was preoccupied with. I do recall the playoff series where Dale Hunter got suspended.

I remember in the late 1980's (or was it the early 1990's) when a Star Trek writer wrote a novel where most of the members of the security squad were named after members of the Penguins at the time. (Lemieux, Barrasso, Jagr, Tocchet, Trottier; etc.) I was reading about it and recognized the names from the NHL. Then, showed the page to my husband and asked him about the names I didn't know. Sure enough, he recalled them as the Penguins. (The two authors of the novel came from near Pittsburgh.)

Posted by: CapsFan75 | May 7, 2009 11:11 PM | Report abuse

@fanohock1

Yes, given the past history of the Caps, most Caps fans know that the team has been victimized by Murphy's Law so many times. (And, of course, Murphy became a superstar when the Caps got rid of him.)

But, the Boston Red Sox were the same way. They seemed to keep finding new ways to get victimized by the hated New York Yankees. So finally karma was on their side in 2005. The Red Sox came back and won a playoff series after being down 3 games to none against guess who. The New York Yankees. They were the first baseball team to come back from such a deficit. Ever. (I was always so paranoid that the first team it would happen to one of my teams but, no, it happened to the hated Yankees.) So, if the Red Sox, one of the most jinxed teams in baseball history can break the jinx, so can the Capitals.

@4RBears

I hope your predictions for both the Caps and the Bears are on the money. Both in 5 games. (The Gold Coin at the Corner helps the Bears and later gets called up for the Caps.)

Yes, Keith Aucoin, who's last name means "At the Corner" in French. But, then Au is the Chemical symbol for Gold and combined with "coin".

Another French note. The French word for silver is argent, with the word for money being l'argent, or literally, The Silver. (Obviously, guess what metal is used to make money.)

Oh and guess what folks, I decided to go check out pensblog for the 1st time ever (probably last now too). Just to let you know, we are a bunch of whiners because we reported a death threat to the police and GMGM went public with complaints about the referee's! Lets put this in perspective, so if we're whiners b/c we reported a death threat to the police, what would the Pens be had one been placed on Sid? Call me crazy but I think they would have done a little more than call the police. As far as us complaining about refs, is anything GMGM said wrong or incorrect? So I guess stating facts is complaining. I couldn't believe the slashing call against Varly when he gets crosschecked in the head by Kunitz with no call. Yeah I know we shouldn't talk about those things though.

@ 92801

Credit to you for realizing which team is the best even though you live on the other side of the country. However, this Chambersburg guy lives closer to the best team than he does to any other, and still chooses to root for Pittsburgh. Not analogous. He has no excuse not to realize the superiority of the Caps. ;)

Also, I am not hoping for a Caps/Ducks final, although I understand why you are. If the Caps make the final, I like any other matchup, even Detroit, better than Ana. The Ducks are like the Rangers with more offense.

On penalties. And, of course, no penalty was called on Orpik (or should I call him Oprick or Orprick) when he cross checked Semin in Game 1 of this series and Semin had to get stitches. (Semin was back and got two assists in that game, even if he didn't score a goal himself.)

The Caps had beaten the Ducks in their only meeting this year. However, it was a phyrric (?) victory. That was the game where Mike Green got hit by Pronger and was out for several games afterwards. (And we were sans Semin and Green and went into a tail spin on the "road trip from hell")

On Pronger, he's got a perfect fit last name. Can you just imagine the "prong" sound as he makes a hit (including the unfortunate one on Green)? Green didn't think it was deliberate. (No whiner he)

Wings/Ducks tied 2-2 atm, if Wings pull it out tonight they'll regain home ice advantage in the series even with that gift from the refs to the Ducks at the end of Game 3. Don't count the defending champs out of the West just yet.

Don't worry, I'm not counting the defending champion Red Wings out yet. It's my office mate who is.

I would probably root for the Red Wings in the Stanley Cup if they play either Pitt or Carolina (and would have done so against Philthy, NJ, or any NY team). There are quite a few teams I hate in the Eastern Conference. Pitt, Philthy, NJ, and the NY teams that have been responsible for much heartbreak in the Caps history and Carolina, the current division rival.

Posted by: CapsFan75 | May 8, 2009 12:08 AM | Report abuse

Interesting stats going into tonight's games...

Caps have 3 of the top 6 point producers (Ovechkin, Semin, Backstrom). We did play 7 games in Round 1 so that helps.

Ovechkin is tied for the lead in goals with 8 (Crosby), 3rd in points with 13, tied for 2nd in +/- at 7, and 2nd in hits with 39. (must be the god of cherry picking to rack up all these stats doing only one thing)

Backstrom is 2nd in assists with 10.

Varlamov is 1st in GAA with a 1.64. He's 2nd in save % with a .942. Obviously he's also tied for the lead in wins with 6 (Hiller is still playing atm also with 6).

@peteywheatstraw - The big problem is that there have been too many 17-year-olds who make death threats, and carry them out... they usually commit suicide when they're done, but that doesn't negate the damage they do on their way to hell.

I'm glad the authorities have taken this as seriously as they have, and that the kid's laptop has been confiscated. If he's a psycho, they'll get him help and/or lock him up; if he's not, hopefully this will scare him enough to keep him from doing something this incredibly STUPID again!
