First. Hah!

Thanks, I've got to get there.

Anyone know if CSN has local broadcast rights to these Versus games?

Posted by: Dinger | April 6, 2008 11:22 PM | Report abuse

What's the word on Shultz?

Posted by: DC FURY | April 6, 2008 11:29 PM | Report abuse

sweet, they play game 4 on my birthday; too bad it's in philly.

I'm also wondering with Dinger if CSN will be broadcasting as well

Posted by: Justini | April 6, 2008 11:30 PM | Report abuse

I'm not sure, but if not I would assume that Joe B would be calling almost all of the Caps games on Versus...he usually handles almost all of the East coast games and he's based in Washington, it just makes sense.

Posted by: Captain Cliche | April 6, 2008 11:30 PM | Report abuse

nice to finally see all the nation TV interest

Posted by: hockeyjoe | April 6, 2008 11:31 PM | Report abuse

Tarik, thanks. I have to say. I really appreciate how quickly you get info out to the public. More and more I am making your blog my first stop for Caps info because of it. Thanks, no doubt, it takes a lot of work to keep on top of this stuff.

CSN has coverage of every game except those slated for NBC.

Posted by: No. 1 Caps Fan Of All-Time | April 6, 2008 11:32 PM | Report abuse

omg friday? thats a too long for me to wait, I have to get through a whole week before Im there AHHH

Posted by: Andrew | April 6, 2008 11:34 PM | Report abuse

About ComCast showing games: Their schedule has a Wizards game on Friday night, college baseball on during all the other games. Unless they bump them, you'll have to catch it on Versus or elsewhere.

Posted by: jmu_capsgirl | April 6, 2008 11:35 PM | Report abuse

If Comcast does in fact broadcast the games, will Joe B. be calling them, or does he have an obligation to Versus?

Posted by: Concerned about Joe B. | April 6, 2008 11:38 PM | Report abuse

Hopefully waiting until Friday will allow Schultz and Morrisson to get back into the lineup.

I won't hold my breath on Morrisson..

Posted by: Oneal | April 6, 2008 11:44 PM | Report abuse

@ Andrew,
I know its not Caps hockey, but our boy Joe Finley and the Fighting Sioux play Thursday @ 6pm on ESPN2.

Let's go Caps!!

Posted by: jmu_capsgirl | April 6, 2008 11:47 PM | Report abuse

CSN could always bump the Wizards (or Caps, I guess) to CSN+ if there's a conflict. The main reason I'm curious about CSN's broadcast rights is to see if the games will be available in HD -- at least the ones at home. For us non-Comcast folks out there, Versus-HD is a rare bird.

Considering the fact that CSN operates in Philly as well as DC, seems to me that if they're broadcasting, there is no reason why all of the games shouldn't be carried in HD.

Posted by: Dinger | April 6, 2008 11:47 PM | Report abuse

Cool to see that our series is the league's marquee matchup - all the games on national TV. I do hope Joe B. gets the call on Versus.

Posted by: katzistan | April 7, 2008 12:14 AM | Report abuse

Maybe I'm missing something, but it appears as if our series is the only one in the first round that will have every game televised nationally in the US!

Posted by: ranndino | April 7, 2008 12:17 AM | Report abuse

Cox customers...if you didn't notice, CSN HD was added to the HD channel lineup (734) on Friday. I saw Sat night's game in HD on Cox.

Posted by: Bubba | April 7, 2008 12:24 AM | Report abuse

Wings/Preds series is also on Vs and NBC. My guess is that they don't expect the series to go to game 7, so they haven't committed to a network.

let's go Caps!

Posted by: jmu_capsgirl | April 7, 2008 12:25 AM | Report abuse

i certainly hope to hear joey b's sweet sweet voice calling these games...just wouldnt be the same without him

Posted by: love | April 7, 2008 12:49 AM | Report abuse

Hope they broadcast them on CSN, RCN doesn't carry Versus unless you have the digital cable package.

Posted by: Mike | April 7, 2008 12:52 AM | Report abuse

Im catching up and reading all the posts about the upcoming series and I think that everyone here needs to get a grip:

1st these two teams were 2-2 in the regular season. In the caps victories, they almost gave it up at the end.

2nd Flyers have won 7 of their last 9 games. Biron has had the hot hand for them. He is a good goalie and you can tell when he is on his game, he isnt giving much in the way of rebounds..and he hasnt let up a goal in the last 2 games.

3rd Flyers have what, like 7 20 goal scorers on their team. They have depth through the lineup. They will obviously key on OV and if they keep him in check, it might be a long series for the caps.

4th Special teams...Flyers PP 2nd in the league, PK is up there too. They get so many short handed chances, it isnt even funny.

Im not saying who is going to win the series, but I see it going the full 7 games. Yeah, caps are playing great but that can only be kept up for so long. With a young team, all it takes is 1 or 2 mistakes and bam....philly is in their head.

Finally, lets get rid of this holier than thow attitude we have going on here. Ive been to many a game up at the Wachovia Center, sitting all over the arena and have never had any real problem. Yeah, some good natured ribbing and taunting but you give it right back and make it interesting and fun. Nothing worse than what I have seen go on down in the Booth.

Also, ive seen my share of ugly fat drunk men and women low life people in DC at the games and outside the games, so trying to get into a pissing match about the appearance of Philly people is pointless. We talk about class, well Caps fans, you start to show how classless you really are when you make posts attacking peoples appearance and wealth.

Just stay grounded and know that in the playoffs, everything is out the window...

Its gonna be fun

Posted by: JamesD | April 7, 2008 1:31 AM | Report abuse

@ JamesD

But attacking people's appearance and wealth is what DC is all about!

All kidding aside, I think you're right about this series going 7. Definitely won't be any shorter than 6 games, IMO. I think we're really going to regret not getting Ottawa in the first round.

Posted by: Dinger | April 7, 2008 1:57 AM | Report abuse

23rd!----Anyway, I saw the Saturday game also on Cox 734 in HD and it was fantabulous------GO CAPS!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Posted by: Cox HD | April 7, 2008 3:00 AM | Report abuse

I hope it is true that CSN will have the games and that the CSN program schedule is able to change. I want to see the games in HD. I don't get Versus or CSN+ in HD.

Posted by: sitruc | April 7, 2008 3:09 AM | Report abuse

Well, if anyone is in AZ for the playoffs, I could use the company. It's going to be an interesting series, and I even know a Flyers fan out here. Good times to be had by all!

Nice! I know a lot of people were hoping for a Thursday start, but this gives our boys an extra day to get ready...and weekend games make it easier to celebrate.

Can't wait! Let's Go Caps!!!

Were going to be glued to the series over on this side of the pond too!

Ovechkin is a real draw & there's a lot of excitement as the caps were at one time as far as odds go a generous 125/1 (yes i'm on it,the end of season surge attracted a lot of new fans to the sport & NBC,Verses etc will all be covered by NASN (North Atlantic Sports Channel.

Come on the CAPS!!!

When hypothetically would Game 5 tixs go on sale??? After there's a loss by either team?

Posted by: Anonymous | April 7, 2008 7:23 AM | Report abuse

Husband and I got tickets to playoff game. Could only find tickets in 400's. Wishful thinking is that all of the tickets were grabbed by Caps fans. Have sinking feeling blocks were bought to re-sell (ala Hannah Montana tickets). Please tell me AOL was big buyer and tickets will be donated to local hockey clubs, used for Student Rush promotions, etc.

This will be a tough series, but a good one for our young guys to cut their playoff teeth. Just think how much experience they will have to bring to the second round. In all seriousness, given where we were on Halloween, any playoff game is icing on the cake to this wonderful season. I am going to just enjoy it.

Posted by: Kim | April 7, 2008 7:26 AM | Report abuse

@ Kim - There are tons of tickets at inflated prices on DC and Philly Craigslist and I'm sure on TicketExchange and StubHub as well. Plenty of enterprising folks out there. I'm sure there is no chance of any student rush, etc. tickets for the playoffs and probably no or few donated tickets either. The playoffs are an entirely different animal from the regular season.

As an aside, how cool is it that our entire series is being broadcast nationally! Props to NBC, Versus, etc for realizing which player would be the biggest draw.

Posted by: Jill | April 7, 2008 7:35 AM | Report abuse

Good news about games 1 and 2 - Philly did not know they were playing us until late yesterday, and by then only 400 level seats were available, so hopefully not a lot of Philly fans got in (unless they are paying brokers top dollar). I think we'll be in good shape for the red out games 1 and 2 - we just need to make sure to scoop 'em up for games 5 and 7 (if it goes that far). GO CAPS!!!

Posted by: Boo! | April 7, 2008 7:38 AM | Report abuse

Does anyone know what the 'all you can eat' tickets are in Philly? That's the only thing that I can find available ...

As jmu_capsgirl mentioned, the Wings/Preds series will also be all nationally televised in the US. BUT our series is the only one to be all nationally televised in the US AND Canada!

On another note, as someone who has Vs. and CSN in HD (along with NBC, of course), I am set for hockey Nirvana starting Wednesday. At least two HD playoff games a day!

Watching NHL on the Fly - interesting comments from Dave Reid:

- Did not matter who Washington played, as long as they got in

- Most interesting team to watch this season = Washington

- Most interesting player to watch this season = Ovie

- Ovie will bring it to another level in the playoffs

- Even though it will be a very physical series, and Philly will be really tough, Alex will lead his team and score

Notes from Sat Night:

1. Laich skated under his own power out to the "shirts off our backs" presentation. He looked a bit hobbled, but he needed no assistance to get on the ice and move around. Very good sign.

2. I commented to my buddy Sat night "Who's that Giant standing next to Nylander" during abovementioned promotion. Was Schultz. I had no idea he missed part of the game (though, I should have...I did notice the dpairings were inconsistent)

3. ShMo was not in a sling or anything, and appeared to be able to remove his jersey without trouble/assistance. That is VERY good news for him, and I'm hopeful we could see him back soon.

Watched the Philly/PITT game yesterday. Man PITT should be investigated for collusion. They have been the best team in the league all season and completely packed it in yesterday with home ice on the line... You could CLEARLY tell they wanted the SENS.

Comcast here in DC carried Philly/NJD Friday and PHI/PITT yesterday. I watched both and it gave me so much more appreciation for JoeB and Locker. We have quite the tandem compared to those whining crybabies that do the Philly broadcast. It was the most unprofessionally announced broadcasts I have ever heard. Keith Jones is worthless as a color commentator.

FYI, at no point this season was any game aired both on Comcast and Versus. If Versus carries it, you will see Wizards/BS Regional stuff on CSN. The only channels that have legal rights to air the games alongside Versus are local broadcast networks (NBC, FOX, ABC, CBS, News8, UPN, WB).

So this scheduling's the worst timing as I have a trip to attend a conference in Miami this weekend and will miss both of the games. If anyone needs a single ticket to Game 1 + 2 (Sec100 RowG - 5 rows back from center ice, behind Caps bench), let me know as I have one possible person in line for them but haven't sold them (email: bugula [at]

And on that note - if anyone knows of a bar in Miami that is hockey friendly (if such a thing exists), please let me know.

I have Nats tickets for Fri night. Does anyone know a good spot at the park to watch the Caps as well? Maybe that lounge out in Left Center?

I will be at the game Sunday though!!

Posted by: Cap Man | April 7, 2008 9:22 AM | Report abuse

I can't watch without Locker broadcasting. Period. I remember when the Caps went to the Cup round 10 years ago, we were stuck with the national coverage and it was all about the Red Wings. Luckily, Craig was broadcasting on the radio with that Caps radio guy (his name escapes me now). Any idea if this will be broadcast in FM? I have no problem turning down the sound on the TV to tune into REAL Caps coverage. I can't stand to hear these Johnny-come-lately's riding Ovie's jock.

Darn those Pens! Pens sandbag for Sens and we got Broad Street Bullies.

From Philadelphia Inquirer: "Did Pens sandbag for Sens?"

No Sidney Crosby, not much effort. The Penguins paid the Flyers a huge compliment yesterday. They made it embarrassingly clear that they preferred to face the Senators in the first round of the playoffs. After skating through the motions of a 2-0 loss to Philadelphia, the Pens will indeed face the Sens.

Posted by: King Huet | April 7, 2008 9:28 AM | Report abuse

Man this national coverage is saving me. I have to go to Georgia during games 4 and 5, but shouldn't have trouble finding a bar with NBC or VS.

Posted by: Sombrero Guy | April 7, 2008 9:28 AM | Report abuse

@ Deadkings - you must be kidding about Locker, right? I mean, usually you hear the opposite (that people just tolerate him). He would be an embarrassment to Washington were he on a national broadcast. Imagine viewers around the US and Canada tuning in, only to hear him talking about his "glory days" in the NHL, what he had for lunch, etc. It pains me just to think about it. He is a decent color guy when he focuses on the game -- unfortunately, he cannot manage to do so for an entire broadcast.

Posted by: Jill | April 7, 2008 9:38 AM | Report abuse

- Can't wait - We have nothing to loose, and everything to gain, we aren't even supposed to have made the playoffs, I like being the underdog in this series even though we are the third seed!!!
***side-note - I called Pinehurst this morning and they are booked for a Candy Cane showing! Hahahahahahahahahahahaha - still can't get over it - Fourrrrrr - Staaaaaaaal!!!!!
@JSchon - are you still thinking FEDS won't come back and play for Washington or have you found a way to squeeze him in for me - he is the best darn 38 year old I have ever seen play the game!!! Wow as if I wasn't impressed enough before Saturday!!!

Friday can't come soon enough. 116 O and lets blow the roof off the dump!

It is great though that we don't have to play until Friday. Good break for the boys to heal and they deserve it. I don't care about layoffs, its the playoffs and if you can't prepare to compete for the Stanley Cup, you should work for the government!

Posted by: caphcky | April 7, 2008 9:43 AM | Report abuse

Jill, no one said anything about bringing Locker in for national coverage. I'm lamenting the fact that they're taking our decent local coverage away for some lame national coverage which will amount to game snippets sandwiched between Crysbaby updates and endless commercials. And since you mentioned it, Locker's got a lot more NHL goals than Mike Emrick, so what's your point? Mike Emrick's voice reminds me of fingernails on a chalkboard.

Posted by: DeadKings08 | April 7, 2008 9:44 AM | Report abuse

Trade Tom Poti greenie, and we have room for Fedorov.

Posted by: JSchon | April 7, 2008 9:45 AM | Report abuse

I managed to find a hockey friendly bar in Austin TX and Boulder CO on my recent trip. I think you should be fine since the games are on national networks. I had to call 35 bars in Austin and managed to find 3 that had NHL center ice, but it should be a lot easier for you. As long as a bar is willing to put the game on.

I would suggest getting there about 20 minutes before game time to stake a claim.

Count me in among those who enjoy Laughlin. His voice takes some getting used to, and is the first complaint among my friends who I am attempting to turn into fans, but he knows his stuff and provides personality without being a blind "homer".

@ DeadKings08 - I am with you. I love Locker!! I think he does a fantastic job. He is entertaining, but also knows the game. When he first started announcing the game (many many years ago) his voice threw me a bit, but now its just not the same without him. I love our coverage here - I watch a ton of other games courtesy of center ice and its just no the same. Though San Jose has some good ones too...

ANybody know what the deal is with Briere? He's a minus 22! He must have less hockey sense than Semin!!!!

Posted by: dave | April 7, 2008 9:55 AM | Report abuse

Couple things-

1- I just scored tickets to the game on friday and am so f'ing jacked for that, it'll be my first live Caps game this year!

2- Am I the only one who will be rooting hard for the sandbagging to come back and bite the Pens right in the a$$? As much as I would like the Caps to take them out in the next round, I would find it extremely amusing if Ottawa pulled the upset.

With Steckel in the line-up

scratches: Fehr, Laing

I have no idea how you incorporate Clark at this point. If he can play, I can't imagine BB not letting the "C" play.

scratches: Fehr, Flash, Laing
Thats the only line-up that makes sense. Clark better be 100% before he gets in a game. He's gonna get smacked around in the crease vs PHI.

Posted by: JSchon | April 7, 2008 10:03 AM | Report abuse

@Jschon -

With Clark and Steckle, i would do this

I don't see any reason to disrupt the chemistry of our first line. I would also want to consider keeping Cooke on the second line and starting Clark on the third, but that would mean Clark or Laich would get bumped to the left.

Nah, you don't mess up the chemistry on the first line. Clark probably starts out on the 3rd line to get his skating legs back.

Posted by: GJ | April 7, 2008 10:10 AM | Report abuse

For all of those who want this person or that person in the line up..realize one of the reason for the 7 game run was the lines did not change at all during that time. After months of no one knowing who they were playing with from game to game the line now have been together for the last month. That can not be overlooked. For me no line up changes as long as the streak continues...

Posted by: Jordan2 | April 7, 2008 10:11 AM | Report abuse

I agree... Locker is entertaining while still trying to be unbiased. I feel he roots for the caps but calls it how he see's it. Also I think he's great in tandem with Joe B as a Dragnet type combo...

Not to mention the Locker Broadcast drinking game!!!11

Posted by: MetalCap | April 7, 2008 10:11 AM | Report abuse

I didn't say anything about Laughlin's voice, or the number of goals he scored. I said he cannot manage to stay focused on the task at hand and constantly meanders to talking about other stuff. When he focuses, he is quite good. I just wish he could be more consistent with his focus.

I had Center Ice last season because I was living in California and wanted to be able to watch the Caps. For nearly every game, I had both team's feeds available and I consistently chose the Washington feed. I appreciated the taste of "home." However I can't imagine going so far as I say that I cannot watch a Caps game without Locker. That is a big statement.

Posted by: Jill | April 7, 2008 10:12 AM | Report abuse

OV and Clark being together isnt anything new. They were line mate last year, Clark registered 30 goals. Clark was in the crease putting in OV's rebounds. Minimal diffence IMO.

Kozlov and Semin, played great together the few times they've been paired up as wingers. Putting Clark there is a huge risk. Semin and Clark have not played together except on PP situations.

Again, all this contingent on Clark being 100% healthy.

Is there a roadtrip in your future?

Anyone else joining our boys in Philly?!?

Posted by: Boo! | April 7, 2008 10:28 AM | Report abuse

I personally think Clark should come back when he's healthy on the 3rd line. Maybe the 2nd line (if he's REALLY healthy). Don't mess with success with the top line; its working. Cooke is doing well on the 2nd line but he and Clark play the same game, so they are inter-changeable.

And HEEL SCHULTZ and MO. HEEL BOYS. Sleep in on of those chambers that allows your body to heel faster. We need you both, or at least 1 of you ASAP.

Posted by: Go Skins Go | April 7, 2008 10:35 AM | Report abuse

Man, I love Locker, I think he's great. I don't attend too many games in person (Fri-Sun only) so I end up watching 60+ games on TV. Joe B. and Locker are entertaining and fun to watch.

It gets old and boring if all they do is talk technical about hockey for 3 hours all game every game. Locker is in my home 3 nights a week and I rather enjoy his commentary on all kinds of stuff, and especially the old-time hockey stuff.

The two of them are a great pair. I regularly have out of town guests, and they always comment on how good our local broadcast team is.

By contrast, the NBC team is horrid. We should make up an NBC broadcast "hat trick"

1. Blatantly not knowing who is on the ice
2. Getting hockey rules wrong
3. Flip-flopping about which player or team is "dominating" the game.

Boudreau shouldn't mess with lines 1 and 2 at all. The top line goes without saying, and that second line has been fantastic ever since Semin found chemistry with Fedorov, and Cookie adds a lot of physical energy with an appreciable amount of offensive upside.

Game 1 should have all lines the same as Saturday, and if it looks like Flash or Fehr are overwhelmed physically, then it might be time to squeeze Clark back in there somehow.

Posted by: HolyOlie | April 7, 2008 10:47 AM | Report abuse

Pittsburgh always finds a way to screw us, whether it be coming back from a 3-1 deficit in a playoff series, or losing to the Flyers yesterday so that we have to face the Flyers rather than the Sens, and probably have a large contingent of their obnoxious fans in our building. I couldn't believe the lines to get into the arena that had formed by 5:30 yesterday, so hopefully those same people formed lines around the building leading up to the box office after the game.

Where's the best place to score tickets at this point? I didn't think I'd be able to go, but of course now that I know I can go, they're sold out and all the brokers are asking tons of money. I'm not made of money, I'm just a diehard Caps fan who wants to see them in the playoffs!!!

I used to hate Locker. When I was a kid, I'd watch games with my finger on the mute button so that I wouldn't have to hear that incredibly annoying voice and those horrible puns. I came around though, and now I just can't imagine Caps hockey without him. He's smart and likable, if a bit irritating in general.

And Joe B is one of the best play-by-play guys in the NHL. They make a great tandem, and it took my parents getting Center Ice and me having to listen to some of the awful commentary that other teams' fans are treated to for me to figure it out.

IF we get really desperate with d injuries, Fedorov might play d.

He played d under Bowman and finished last season in Columbus playing d because of the Columbus d injuries. Larry Murphy as HD.NET commentator said that his first d partner in Detroit was... Fedorov!

Now who will center the seond line then?

RE: Clark/Kozy and lines...

Ovie/Backs/Kozy line has been the best all year, because it's got Ovie on it. However, the stretch where Kozy was centering line 2, line 2 was the best one we had. Best offseason addition this year has been Viktor. He's an amazing talent and can completely DOMINATE a game when he puts his mind to it.

Also, notice how much Semin's production increased when they stuck Cooke on his line. That guy is AMAZGIN, and more than Feds, I want to see Cooke back here next year.

Fehr is a RFA at the end of the year. I say we tender him but let some other team take him if they want, opening room for Cooke.

Yeah, I had to get past his voice 15 years or so ago when he first started broadcasting. I watch almost every game of every season (good and bad) and I honestly don't know where you're coming from with the "meandering" comment. His color commentary is always spot-on, he knows the players on both sides inside and out and is always fair in calling it like he sees it. The point is that he has become the Sonny Jurgensen (if you will) of the Caps. He has become an local institution. I'm not saying that I won't watch the game without him but I'll go to great lengths to find him on the radio if he does indeed do that. Not to mention, he's done a lot to promote youth hockey in the area. I've even bumped into him at a game years ago and I must confess that we were sporting the same mullet at the time. I'll always remember him telling me, "Hey man, nice hair!". Well, the mullet is there anymore for either of us but I still think he's a great guy.

@FFS Enough,

Your really ready to completely give up on Fehr already? The guy missed a season and half because of injury and is just getting back to where he was before. He's only 22 years old. He has tons of talent, and there is no way they just "let some other team take him if they want."

You won't be alone, there are several of us Caps fans making the trip to Philly for both games. You won't miss us - we WILL be decked out in Caps gear! Like I mentioned in previous posts, I've gone during the regular season and haven't run into jerks... talking smack in fun, but nothing physical where I was worried of being punched, etc. Hopefully we can FILL their arena! Hi Tariik--

Nice spread on Ovie's sensational season on the back page of the sports section today. But the photo on the bottom ("The 60-Goal Club") identified as "Bossy" looks like a hockey face but sure ain't the Mike Bossy I remember. Might want to get it corrected (if the sports editors can be bothered to correct a hockey mistake).

I know it's been a while, but I thought I remembered that they sold tickets by Playoff Game #, and then you used them whenever that game # came up (i.e. "Game 3" ticket could be first round game 5 or secodn round game 1). So, how come game 5 tix aren't on sale yet?

@ DeadKings - I don't think I used the term "meandering" but that term could reasonably apply. As I said, when he focuses on the game, I think he does a good job. But if you watch the games as you say you do, I know you have heard him talking about what he had for lunch, his spa treatments, wardrobe choices, etc. during play. I don't think it has been nearly as bad this season as it has been in past seasons. But I nonetheless find it very distracting. If he'd stick to discussing the game, I'd be fine with him. I just don't want or need to hear about all that other crap when I'm trying to watch a Caps game!

It's not so much that I'm ready to give up on Fehr. I'm looking at it more from the standpoint of, what can we get for him, and who can play in his place.

I like him a lot. I like him more than Flash. But this team's got Gritty-crash-the-crease guys. If we do intend to resign someone like Cooke or Feds, somebody has to go.

Looking at our Forward/Center FA's for next year, we have:

When you start building lines from what we already have signed for next year. Lines 1-2 are set. You have to believe that Laich will be resigned, leaving only the wing slot on line 3 open. Checking line is only missing 1 wing. Assuming they would carry an extra FWD and have a nice scratch rotation, who are the 3 guys from above that you resign (assuming Laich is resigned). We also have Chris Bourque waiting for his chance, and he really impressed the few games he got into this year.

You need someone on the checking line. that's Laing, Bradley or Cooke. You also need a tough-crease crasher for the 3rd line... That's Cooke or Fehr. If you want Feds back, that bumps Laich to 3rd line wing and requires only 1 checking winger. that's Bradley or Cooke.

There are a lot of tough decisions for GMGM to make this offseason, and saying goodbye to anyone from Hershey will be tough. But it has to be done for this team to get better. The one thing Fehr has going for him is he's

Guys, don't worry so much about the Flyers. I'm not saying it'll be a cakewalk by any stretch, and I'm not making predictions, but the reason the season series was 2-2 is that we played all 4 games before mid-February. This is not the same Capitals team that played in those games, this is the Capitals team that's accumulated one of the best records in the league over the last 3 months and has been playing playoff hockey for weeks. You can relax a little bit. Not a lot, but a bit.

Pittsburgh sat superstar centre Sidney Crosby and lackadaisically lost 2-0 to Philadelphia.

The result paves the way for the second straight Sens-Pens first-round playoff matchup.

"I think that's real good for us," Ottawa coach and GM Bryan Murray said of facing a skillful lineup that also features Evgeni Malkin, Marian Hossa, Sergei Gonchar and Petr Sykora -- rather than a physical group like the Anaheim Ducks, who bounced the Senators in the Stanley Cup final last June.

Let me preface by saying its just my opinion. And now back to this Pens thing; if any American team had done what Pittsburgh did and lay flat in a game that determined 1st and 2nd place, the Canadian media (notably TSN) would foam at the mouth. But because its their precious Sidney they wash over it. Its an aside. THEY TOOK A DIVE. I think its disgusting. I can see them resting a few key players (they only sat Crosby) if the game didn't matter and they were in anyway. But they were playing to determine 1st place in the conference. Thats a goddamn trophy. And it seems the opinion that they purposely folded is almost unanimous. Has anyone seen an article anywhere suggesting collusion or heard a commentator speaking ill of the Pens for it rather than casually mentioning it? I hope its taped up in Ottawa's dressing room. I hope they are as insulted as I think they should be. Yeah, i'd of liked the Caps to play the Sens but I wouldn't want to tank for it. Thats not how I play. From now on, when I'm teaching my children about tanking, I'll explain it as "a Pittsburgh way to play" and something beneath us.

The Pens find new ways to make me hate em.

Posted by: oo7 | April 7, 2008 11:50 AM | Report abuse

@FFS Enough,

I hear what your saying. I may have just misinterpreted what you said as just putting Fehr on waivers and losing him for nothing. I agree that it is starting to become difficult to find places in the lineup for all the players that are worthy of a spot. I mean, if Steckel and Clark are ready to go, how do you take anyone out of the lineup at this point when they've been on such a roll? It should be another interesting offseason for GMGM, that's for sure. He should have some extra pieces to work with and attempt to improve the club using the trade route if he so chooses. Does he tender a contract for Eminger? I feel like he's played pretty well when he's been given a chance, but tendering a guy $1 million to sit on the bench for 60 games just doesnt seem like a smart move, especially with Alzner, Lepisto and others possibly ready to step up next season.

Watched the Pens/Flyers game, and either the Pens mailed it in or they should be very concerned come playoff time. At first I thought the Flyers were really undisciplined taking all of those penalties. Then realized it was stragegy. Their best scoring chances came on all of those shorthanded attempts.

I am hoping that they will not be too dirty the first few games. They have to know that the NHL will be watching (especially with all of the national coverage).

I am a huge lifelong Caps and Skins fan. Does anyone else who fits this description find the variation in quotient of fun level, quality of people interested and overall general fan experience disturbingly different between these two Washington organizations? I typically find myself disgusted with any and anything that goes on with the Redskins these days (ESPECIALLY the people who attend the games and the stadium itself), while attending a Caps game and chatting with you guys always seems to bring a smile to my face (and I swear it's not just because we're having such a great run this year) - I just think that, as a real Redskins fan as well, I find the disconnect rather amazing.

Dont worry about the calls. The Flyers were put on warning early in the year for their dirty play. The same will hold true going into the playoffs. Refs will be briefed and look for all possibly scenario's going on.

They will look at Cooke's hit...they will make sure that Ovie doesnt leave his feet on hits...Only the best ref the playoffs..If Philly is dirty, then we will make them pay on the power play.

It is just there is not a single player on this Caps team that I do not like or would not want to sit down and have a beer/shot with (okay, I guess it would have to be a soda with Nicky).

Posted by: Kim | April 7, 2008 12:23 PM | Report abuse

When you tender RFA's you are doing 2 things. 1. Establishing which "level" you value the player at. The tender determines what kind of draft compensation you get if someone else takes them.
2. You are trying to get the player as cheap as possible, without making them so cheap another team swoops in and takes him for a late-rounder.

Tendering Emminger is a good idea. If he remains a cap he could be a good, serviceable 7th D man, or jump to 6th spot is Morrisonn doesn't get resigned. If we tender Emmy 1M (plus manditory tender bonus) and someone else wants him, we let him go and get a 1st or 2nd round pick in return.

Potvin is a damned moron. Unless Boston beats MON, Caps and Pens would meet in 2nd round of playoffs, not Eastern conference finals. As it stands, without upsets, MON would get NJD, Pens would get Caps in 2nd round.

Alright, I have to say something, may be important to some and may irritate others(more likely this case). I don't like the Pens anymore than anyone else on this blog, but I do have to respect them giving Crybaby more time to heal for the playoff push I also understand that the Pens need us to eliminate the more difficult teams for them, because it's obvious that they can't take care of their own business, but honestly I don't think they threw the game and even if they did, it may have been the best situation for them. Just an observation! I honestly think they are not as good of a team as the Flyers are playing right now(which makes me a bit nervous considering our recent injuries) - I can't believe I'm even stating this, but I think it is reasonable to say the Flyers are a better team then the Pens right now(at least according to the game I watched this weekend)! Now that I have just open myself up for a bunch of criticism what does everyone else think???

I watched the game yesterday. It looked like BOTH teams phoned it in. As much bad blood between these two teams, I expected a lot more. The scuttlebutt around the league is that nobody wanted to play the Caps, so Philly didn't want to win. And Between Philly and Ott, the Pens would probably prefer Ott, since ALfredson is out. Let the Caps take care of Philly.

Posted by: Leeguru | April 7, 2008 12:32 PM | Report abuse

I watched both Pitt/Philly games this past week 1/2. Pitt gave absolutely NO effort on Sunday. In the NFL, teams rest players before a playoff push WHEN THEY HAVE NOTHING TO PLAY FOR. The PENS could have secured home ice for the entire playoffs, and chose instead to put ZERO effort during the game. The Flyers had 5 scoring chances on Penguins powerplays during the 1st and 2nd period. That sounds like Caps PP to me... not Penguins...even with Crosby out.

What the Pens did yesterday is called collusion and is against the rules. While tough to prove, it should be addressed... but it won't. NHL will just look at it and say "Oh, Crosby wasn't in, they couldn't beat Philly..."

Posted by: FFS Enough | April 7, 2008 12:32 PM | Report abuse

@ Greenie - I think pretty much everyone who watched the game thought the Pens tanked, including -- I have heard --Pens fans. And there is absolutely nothing respectable about doing that when the conference is on the line.

Posted by: Jill | April 7, 2008 12:32 PM | Report abuse

Who cares if the Pens tanked it? I would rather play Ottawa 1st round too.

Here is all that matters when you talk to Pens fans.

Pens vs. the World. No one wants them to win except themselves.

Caps = America's team

Nothing more to be said...NBC has validated the above statement.

Posted by: SA-Town | April 7, 2008 12:36 PM | Report abuse

Didnt look like the Flyers phoned anything in yesterday. It was a cautiously played game.

As for the penalties, did anyone actually look at some of the calls against philly? It was typical "we need the Pens to succeed" attitude that has taken over the NHL. On at least 3 of the Philly penalties, there should have been 1 call on both teams. But instead the Pens are on a PP.

Why is everyone so scared of Philly playing dirty anyway? Because of what happened earlier in the year? Has anything happened recently? If anything, Philly should be worrying about Cooke..he hasnt shown much respect for other players out there.

Posted by: JamesD | April 7, 2008 12:39 PM | Report abuse

Maybe it was just me, but I didn't see a total tank because I thought Philly was better, actually the Pens looked like they had no legs, but your right it's hard to prove it! I just know from watching the CAPS for so many years, that you can actually have a horrible game as they did against Chicago just a few weeks ago. We were not the same team on that day and there was no tanking, but everyone looked dead (I think Montreal deserved to win the East). Then we got rejuvenated some how???? All I see is a team exhausted from and 82 game schedule - and what it boils down to is I'm just glad no one wants to play us, it makes me feel like we have a group of guys that scares every team right now!!!!

If Philly didnt want to play the Caps and wanted to lose, then how come Biron made some of the saves he made?

If what you say is true then he could have made less of an attempt.

A friend of mine was at the game yesterday and said that during the 2nd intermission they interviewed Mike Richards and the question was asked.."Would you rather play the Pens of the Caps?"

He said something to the effect of just wanting to continue playing the way they have been playing and they would much rather have the 6 seed than the 8 seed and no matter who they play its going to be a good series.

Posted by: Tommmy | April 7, 2008 12:44 PM | Report abuse

No way we will ever know for sure, but both teams looked liked they did lay off a bit in that game. I mean how many turnovers or weak passes do the Pens normally have. And how many open nets does a team with like 7 guys scoring more than 20 goals miss?

I am not necessarily saying anyone lost or did not play as well deliberately. I just do not think either team would do that. My personal opinion is they both just took it easy, did not press, and really played this game to just get it over with rather than worrying too much about the outcome.

My point was more, if that was not them taking it easy, then both teams have issues going into the playoffs.

Posted by: Kim | April 7, 2008 12:45 PM | Report abuse

Did anyone see the Pens/Flyers game from earlier this week? Crosby was absolutely abused in that game. He was getting hit high after the whistle, roughed up, etc, and amazingly he wasn't getting a ton of protection (in my eyes) from the refs or from his teammates.

I think everyone realizes the best bet to beating the Caps is stopping Ovechkin. The question is will the Flyers try to goad him into taking bad penalties, try to knock him out of the game with a cheap shot, or simply try to shut him down with their best defensive pairing.

Personally, I expect this to be a pretty close series, and for the Caps to win they are going to need scoring from the blue line and from places other than the top line. I think Ovechkin is going to have a huge series, but with the Caps defense looking a bit suspect with the injuries, there could be some high scoring (for the playoffs, at least) games.

I dont think anyone is saying that the Flyers are scared of the Caps. They are a low seed...You take what you get.

Caps dont care either...just glad to be in..

Usually all 8 teams are pretty good. It just happened that Ottawa slipped in...It's really no big deal. Ottawa will come out gunning on Pitt...They just wont have the skill to win in the end. I see that series going 6.

In fact Ottawa knows that they need to get Malkin and Crosby off their game..It will be very physical in Pitt/Ott. Maybe more then our series.

I agree with you. I hoped the Pens would win yesterday's game because I thought the Flyers would have a better chance at eliminating the Penguins in Round 1 than the Senators. I guess the Penguins thought so too! You could call it strategic but it doesn't say much for their integrity.

It was too funny. The adds were for Flyers' fans to buy tickets but they were showing the Caps in the old black jerseys. It was clearly Ovie and Semin celebrating goals. Even my daughter caught that they were showing the old Caps black jerseys and not Flyers players in their black jerseys.

I wish we were playing the Penguins right now. 1st round...Smack em in the mouth right out of the box.

I don't see how a 1-0 game into the final minute of regulation could be considered a tank. The Pens looked like a team that wanted only to get out of the game healthy

Anyone who watches Pens/Flyers games know how rough/intense they get, yesterday was no where close. I somewhat understand why they did not play Crosby, I'm just glad our top $ players (OV) are not quite as frail as Crosby and can be available for important games like when the conference title is on the line. We know we can count on OV!!

Did anyone else catch how many times the Pens announcers kept saying that Philly looked like they were trying to win badly because they would rather face the Caps than the Pens? I couldnt believe that! Philly plays the Pens hard in the playoffs and usually wins, not to mention I dont think the pens have won agains philly at home this year. Pretty much anyone you play in the playoffs are going to be tough - I don't for a second believe that Philly desperately wanted to play the Caps. Not sure what those guys were smoking??

Not sure if this has been posted or not ..[keeping up with the comments here takes some work] so if not, shut your office door, think of Friday and listen

This whole tank/didn't tank argument is useless in my mind.

Honestly who cares . . .here is a list of things we should all agree on:

1. Flyers will not tank when they play us
2. Sens will play tough against Pens
3. Nobody is guaranteed a victory in the first round no matter how absurd the match up looks (refer to NCAA tournament)
4. A lot of us who have been fans for years may forget that it is a new season
5. The last month has only somewhat prepared us for the playoffs, Fererov will make sure they know what's coming
6. In an ideal world we would keep this entire team intact for next season
7. Everybody is injured this time of year. We are no better or worse off then the Flyers
8. The Caps can play both ways . .rough and tough or finesse
9. I don't know if hockey fans are better then Skins fans or not BUT IN A FIGHT I WOULD TAKE LEONSIS OVER SNYDER any day baby
10. Let's not lose sight of the fact that Ted wore Red (that Rhymes), what other owner has ever done that before!!!
11. I wasn't surprised Ted wore Red . . .but non-followers are.
12. Its awesome that this town has caught Red Fever. For us long time suffers let's embrace them so that they come to more games. That way we can stop complaining about the other teams fans.

@Greenie- not sure where you'll be in Georgia, but a bunch of us had success in getting the hockey on at Hooters last year during the playoffs (on Versus). Got sound and everything (and non-Thrasher game at that!).

As to the Penguins...they wanted Ottawa and now they've got 'em. Nothing like motivating a team by pretty much saying "yeah, we want to play this team".

Define "tank." I dont' believe that the Penguins organization or players went intot he game thinking "we need to lose this game." But I do beleive that, as an organization, the thought process was, "yeah, #1 seed woudl be nice, but hey, playing Ottawa vice Philly might be nice too, so there's no need to treat this game seriously." From coaching on down to level of player effort, I don't think they treated it any differently than they woudl have if there had been zero playoff implications, vice having home ice on the line.

I'm not in Georgia?? and I get Versus(via satellite)so I'm good on the playoff games-BTW I'm in SC (Myrtle Beach)!

surprised to see nothing from Ron C and his genius prognostication...

I like the Caps in 6. We are faster on the wings, and have a decided advantage in goal, though Biron has played well recently. The Caps will handle Philly's physical play, and if they decide to get dirty and give us tons of PP opportunities, well, the Caps might sweep. Key for us is to play disciplined hockey (ya listenin', Erskine??), play our system and we'll be fine.

Looking forward to seeing OV destroy Briere in game 1 (if Briere plays) or later in the series; I believe there's a current account payable out there.

Why would Boston need to beat Montreal for the Caps to face Pitt in the finals?

Pitt, Montreal, Caps, Rangers / NJ win, then 2rd round is Pitt v NJ/NYR and Mon vs Was.

Finals would be Pitt / Wash.

I'm working under the premise that they reseat based on season rankings (Caps in 3rd) and not by points (Caps in 6th). Is this right?

@Rich C,

I agree that the Caps should honor Ron Webber. Even now, he still doesn't miss a game. A true hockey scholar even though he came into the job with little hockey knowledge in the beginning. The nicest guy who is always willing to share his thoughts about the game that has become a passion for him.

Montreal is 1 seed, Pitt is 2. So Montreal would play NJ/NYR, not Pitt. That's why Boston would have to beat Montreal.

Couple things now that I have my head straight...

1. The mohawk with the beard should be the way these caps go....Love to see 37 yr old Feddy sporting the hawk.

2. Not sure if people remember this but even with Alfredson and Fisher out, Ottawa is a dangerous team in the playoffs. Every player on that team has oodles of playoff experience. They have been there, done that. They have always had goaltending problems but always seem to come together during playoff time. Look for that series not to go the way you think.

3. Filly can get physical all they want. This is OV's stage, this is what a player of his caliber is built for. Can you shut him down for 4 out of 7 games? I think history will show you that you can't. And let us all remember Montreal, the more you play physical, the more he plays physical and the better he plays (4 goals, tons of big hits and a missing tooth: The Ovechkin hat trick). I am really looking forward to seeing him take the playoffs by storm.

4. Filly has only seen Huet once this year, way back on Nov. 1st. Montreal won 5-2 It takes a while to figure out a goalie and one game 5 months ago when he played for a different team isn't enough. It has to make them nervous that all the game film the will be watching will be of him playing like a man possessed. I mean really, half the goals against him came of the LEGS AND STICKS OF CAPITALS.

My bad.. i was being an ar-tard and thought that Pitt was in first.. even though I knew they tanked it last night. My brain is obviously not in it today.

"there is no such thing as a stupid question, just stupid people talking"...

New poll:

What time will be the first mention of Crosby during the Caps-Flyers game Sunday on NBC?

Posted by: Joe B | April 7, 2008 2:06 PM | Report abuse

@Joe B.

Before the game, in the pre-game broadcast, while explaining how these 2 teams ended up meeting each other.

Within the first 2 minutes.
