Poll: Least-Favorite Penguin?

Washington's Alex Ovechkin and Pittsburgh's Sidney Crosby may be the NHL's dream matchup, but this Eastern Conference semifinal series has been downright nasty at times. So we ask:

Hey I was the first voter - the results: 100% Crosby!

Posted by: yosemite_sam | May 13, 2009 9:47 AM | Report abuse

Is there really any question?

Posted by: NFeKPo | May 13, 2009 9:47 AM | Report abuse

Dunno, I can't stand Crosby, but Orprick is an arse! My vote went to Crosby as I really can't stand him.

Posted by: hbcapsfan | May 13, 2009 9:48 AM | Report abuse

I voted for Crosby, even though the misspelled his first name. Isn't the same as my daughter's little friend, Cindy? They are both small and cute, stick out their lower lips when they pout, and act like they are all grown up.

Posted by: crooks_c | May 13, 2009 9:50 AM | Report abuse

Where is Kasparaitis? He is my most hated Pen.

Posted by: WhyGo | May 13, 2009 9:51 AM | Report abuse

Crosby has earned a lot of respect from me lately. His game is great and he plays hard. Now, if he kept his mouth shut and didn't cheap shot players off of the face-off, I might have actually liked him.

He seems like he's trying too hard to be the perfect player and living up to expectations.

Posted by: Joran | May 13, 2009 9:52 AM | Report abuse

Crosby is annoying with his whining, and he's a powerful player to have to play against... but that's just it. He's a great player. I can't be angry at him just because he's a really good center.

Voted for Orpik because it seems like he's a bit of a dirty player.

Posted by: nowanna1 | May 13, 2009 9:56 AM | Report abuse

agree with couple of the post above. I have respect for Cindy's game and I think he's toned down the whining a bit in recent years.

Orpik on the other had is just a straight up DB.

Posted by: Moose33 | May 13, 2009 9:59 AM | Report abuse

Orpik. There a big abyss between disliking Crosby because he plays for the rival and Orpik. Orpik is just a bastard.

Posted by: saintex | May 13, 2009 9:59 AM | Report abuse

Posted by: _stevo | May 13, 2009 9:59 AM | Report abuse

Posted by: _stevo | May 13, 2009 10:01 AM | Report abuse

seriously...how was Kunitz left off this poll?

C'mon Apples!!!!

I still want to cross check him on the neck and then explain to the officer that I was trying to "make room"

Posted by: SkinsFanInNYC | May 13, 2009 10:02 AM | Report abuse

Orprick is the consumate Dooshbag. But I voted for Crysby just because.

But I have to agree, Crysby's got game. He's a fanstastic player, and perhaps he's cleaned up his whining a bit - but not much. There's a reason he was voted by the players by a landslide as the whiniest player in the league.

It's amazing how the Pens fans come in here and say how Ovechkin is overrated. I doubt you'll hear many Caps fans say Crysby is overrated. He's not - it's just two differnt styles of game. Me, I'd rather have Ovechkin because he's just more exciting and fun to watch. And if I had to chose, I'd take Malkin over Crysby although Cindy's performace in this series is making me rethink that.

Here's the other stupid thing about Penguins' fans - had McPhee picked Geno first, is there really any question that Lemieux or whoever the Pens's GM is would not have picked Ovechkin? And had the Pens picked Ovie, I wonder which would be the more popular black and gold jersey - 87 or 8.

I'm just saying . . .

Good call about Kunitz. Feel free to make him a write-in.

Posted by: Lindsay Applebaum | May 13, 2009 10:07 AM | Report abuse

Historically, it's hard to dislike a Pen more than I do Ulfie Samuelsson.

Posted by: jburksva | May 13, 2009 10:08 AM | Report abuse

this is out of place here - but is Brash going be in the line-up tonight?

Posted by: jonmclaren | May 13, 2009 10:08 AM | Report abuse

voted for Orpik, but I think Matt Bradley's got him covered. On one of the goals in Pittsburgh, Bradley blew up Orpik in the corner, then Orpik tried to take revenge in front of the Pens net, and Bradley sent him into the net butt first. Then the puck followed Orpik into the net for a Caps goal. Needless to say, Orpik was not pleased. It was beautiful.

Posted by: perspective6 | May 13, 2009 10:08 AM | Report abuse

How much fun is this series

Posted by: RichC3 | May 13, 2009 10:10 AM | Report abuse

Actually Brads blew up Letang in the corner, and then Orpik in front of the net was more Orpik's fault because he was tryint to get revenge. Probably one of our borderline interference calls we got away with in the corner because Letang didn't have the puck. Considering the disaparity in calls I'll take it.

So, O'Halloran and McCreary with the orange armbands tonight.

What do you think?

Posted by: _Mark | May 13, 2009 10:16 AM | Report abuse

The McCreary choice does NOT make me happy...but then again, at this point, any ref selection is a pile of suck.

Posted by: CapsKH | May 13, 2009 10:19 AM | Report abuse

kunitz would have been my first choice, too; but I'm happy with my orpik pick.

Posted by: uncatim | May 13, 2009 10:19 AM | Report abuse

O'Halloran and McCleary tonight. Just got the game notes.

Posted by: saintex | May 13, 2009 10:22 AM | Report abuse

McCreary is the guy who screwed tried to screw the Caps out of winning game 6 against the Rags with BS 3rd period penalties. How do you know this? I thought that was closely guarded right up till faceoff.

As for poll, I voted Orpik for reasons already noted above so I won't rehash them. I wish it was an all-time poll. Jagr no doubt, in that case. He didn't just screw the Caps as a Pen, he screwed the Caps as a Cap.

Nah, not 10pm. The wild celebration will be later cause we're gonna have to sweat another overtime. How about 10:26?

Posted by: JS26121820 | May 13, 2009 10:28 AM | Report abuse

Definitely Orpik. But Kunitz would have been a good selection as well. He's played brutal this series and the cross-check to Varlamov didn't help his cause. I think Crosby's played hard all series with surprisingly little complaining, at least as the series has gone on. But he did sort of stop after they started winning games so maybe it's not surprising. On the ice he's been great.

Posted by: joeshred | May 13, 2009 10:37 AM | Report abuse

I get tired of Crosby's arms going up every time there's a whistle, so much that actually I think I'm desensitized to it and I've actually been seeing him play. Therefore Orpik is the worst.

Kunitz is not important enough to rate.

I think Sidney is, absolutely, a fabulous player with zero understanding of media relations, a reverse idiot-savant. Having said that, here's hoping Brash puts him - legally - completely on his butski tonight.

I really dislike Crosby but I already knew that before going into the series. I voted for Orpik but Kunitz is right up there with him!

Gonchar looked to be skating fine...I think he is just scared...hopefully he plays tonight and coughs up the puck for a winner for us this time.

Posted by: lylewimbledon | May 13, 2009 10:52 AM | Report abuse

Crosby is a hell of a player, but a childish whiner; tolerable. Orpik and Kunitz have purposely tried to injure Semin and Varly; intolerable. I vote for either/both of those losers.
As for seeing Brashear... unfortunately, I don't think we'll see him for game 7. If he is, I'll be happy as he is one of my favorite Caps. Hope he's back in the line-up for the next series. Both Bruins and Canes have fighters on their teams. He is/will be a much needed presence.

Posted by: capsfan01 | May 13, 2009 10:52 AM | Report abuse

See, you gotta distinguish between Pens you hate cause they gave us the dagger too much (Mario) and Pens you hate because they're just objectionable people (Jagoff, Kasper, Ulf).

Orpik and Kunitz are squarely in the latter. Malkin (so far, anyway) is in the former. Cindy walks both lines.

IMO Brash is too slow for this opponent...when he is always chasing he seems to take stupid penalties...I would sit him out. I think Beagle has done the same thing they call for Brash...just lose his claming influence and leadership, but Clark sits on the bench the whole game so he can cheerlead from there.

Hey, wait a minute there! You have to specify what part of PA. There's Philly (sucks!) and Pittsburgh (sucks!) and then there are those of us in CENTRAL PA who are Bears fans AND Caps fans. Please don't lump us in with the other ends of the state. We don't like those people either. I mean Gov Rendell is from Philly and you should hear the flack he gets from the people around here.

My Favorite quote from yesterday!

Capitol Hill: Why do the Penguins get their fans to wear all white then have the team wear black jerseys? It looked like the Caps were the team playing at home last night!

Dan Steinberg: Apparently it's a remnant of old times. Same reason Pens fans wear mustaches and mullets.

I object less to the color than to the corporate nature of the thing, sponsored shirts given out at the gate. I mean, people in Pittsburgh don't own enough white shirts to get that thing done without a freebie? You can't show much originality in your wardrobe when everyone's wearing the exact same shirt.

I agree on all your points except for one. I don't consider Sid a "great" player. Sid is a cherry-picker who hangs around the net waiting to be spoon-fed pucks so he can knock them in and get all the glory, while his team does all the work.

Anyway, I voted for Orpik because he's becoming as much of a whiner as Sid in this series.

It's one thing to like the Caps, it's another thing to make a comment like this. You either know nothing about hockey or you blink everytime the Pens have the puck. I'm a Caps fan and can tell you that the cherry picker is actually Ovie but nothing wrong with that. BB's system is based on throwing the puck to the blue line where Ovie is waiting. Very rarely will you see Ovie backcheck intensely.

I would take Ovie over Crosby if I was to pick but that doesn't prevent me from admiring Crosby's game.

From previous:

I have 1 request from Caps fans. 1 little inky dinky request that I'm hoping you can help with. For those of you going to the game, congrats you will be witness to one of the most prolific games in history I'm sure. For those of you that aren't going to the game BUT are going to be in the chat room tonight, can we please not get suicidal IF we go down a goal or God forbid 2? It's really hard to take. SOME of you (and you know who you are) are just over the top! While I believe you probably have some underlying personal issues can you please keep the we suck, we're done, caps can't do crap right, green sucks, where's ov, varly sucks, what the hell Mo, what is BB thinking, put Theo in, nice clear Poti, why isn't Brash in, where's Alzner, has Semin played yet, I think Greens hurt, Fedorov looks slow, Beagle is overmatched, Brads looks drunk, Backy's gotta bury that, why is Kozzie skating in mud, Varly's glove has a hole it in, Pothier looks blind in 1 eye and I don't think he can see out of the other, the trainer looks like he's spreading swine flu to Stecks, Juice looks like he's using one of Mike Greens bad sticks, I can't stand that Pens fan in row 1 behind BB, I think Slapshot should be on the PP, Theo's hat is dirty, BB should throw a water bottle at the refs, the blue line should be in the box for tripping Flash, what was that Laich, GMGM is horrible, same ole Caps and most of all, I KNEW IT comments to yourself? If you're watching the game with somebody, say it to them but not on the board. If you're watching the game alone yell at your pet (they're always understanding and will love you no matter what, even if the Caps lose). If you don't have any of the above then just yell it at the Tv (it will still work even if the Caps lose and it won't turn off by itself if you yell at it too much). Plus nobody will know you're yelling at nothing. It's kinda like the tree falling in the forest with nobody around, did it make a sound? Thank you all for your cooperation. I truly appreciate it. All of you who are hyper negative have caused at least 40% of my drunkenness during games! Oh and last but not least, if anybody comes on to the chat and asks what the score it, I think my head's gonna explode so it won't matter if the Caps win or not. Remember folks this is Game 7. Both teams are fighting for their lives so it's probably not going to be an easy 3-0 or 4-0 coast through game 7. It will be a hard fought 1 goal game that comes down to the last 5 minutes or OT. POSITIVE THOUGHTS BREED POSITIVE RESULTS!!!!!!!!

I don't think playing Brash is a smart move. He hasn't played in a while and inserting him into a game 7 might not be the best idea.

Also, we've all seen the penalties that are called on him, some legit and some based on reputation. I don't think we can afford to take one more pemalty than we already will take even if I would love for Brash to lay out multiple Pens.

Cindy Crosby is the A-Rod of hockey, but not as phony as A-Fraud.

I knew Malkin's name wouldn't get that many votes, because he's actually a quiet bully on the ice who plays hard....

All-time for me is Shawn McEachern... and Jagr of course.

Between McCreary and Orpik, Semin is guaranteed at least two penalties and two non-calls against just for being on the ice.

The only thing to have made me believe there was more of a conspiracy around the assignment of the Refs/Linesmen would have been if both the Devorsky's were assigned in addition to McCreary.

There was a special "shout out" in the Game Notes today reminding Caps fans not to throw things on the ice. But I tell you what my good friends, I am going to ask my husband and stepson to toss me (and anybody else who's willing) up and over the glass in the direction of the Refs if there is a potentially game impacting calls this evening.

Or should I say "When..."?

CAPS CAN DO IT!!

Matt Cooke should be listed.

My least favorite Pen was always Ken Wregget, dude was a career backup except when he played the Caps in the playoffs, then he morphed into Ken Dryden.

Would be interesting to make a comparison b/w current Pens and Mario, Jagr, Ulf, etc...

This would be a more interesting survey without Crosby. Everyone votes for Crosby. Without him, the votes might spli.t For me its Orpik and then Cooke and then Gonchar.

Is this current or all time? Kasparaitis hasnt played for the Penguins since 2002. I picked Crosby just based on the fact he whines nonstop and of course the best player they have. Cooke is a solid player and we should have resigned him to provide some grit along our lines.

To whoever brought up the Ovechkin/Malkin draft. I thank the heavens McPhee picked Ovechkin over Malkin (at least to date). Not that Malkin is a bad player; but you are correct. The Penguins would have snatched Ovechkin in a heartbeat. You give them Crosby and his skating/playmaking ability with Ovechkin and his shooting/hitting and holy cow. One of the issues the Penguins have right now is Malkin and Crosby are similar in many ways. Neither score a ton of goals (although I bet Crosby will in time) and both rake up a ton of secondary assists.

The_Spear:

Good call on Wregget... I remember Barrasso getting hurt at the old Caps Center, paving the way for Wregget to enter and not give up a goal all night long... Poor Olie had about 50 saves and took the loss that night.

is it even a contest? orpik by a mile. sure there are things to hate about crosby but the top two reasons would be 1) he is a penguin 2) he is very skilled.

orpik is dirty. and watch who he picks on...it is always guys who he knows won't drop the gloves with him like semin and backstrom. but then again, Orpik is the exact kind of guy the caps could really use...
